Abstract: Alcohol use disorders are a significant problem among women in the United States. The epidemiologic factors, physiologic effects, psychosocial and medical consequences, and detection and management of these disorders in women differ from those in men. Primary care physicians are in a unique position to identify, educate, and counsel women with alcohol problems and to refer them for treatment. In this article, Drs Cyr and McGarry discuss the consequences of drinking in women and outline ways in which physicians can guide them to the help they need. Cyr MG, McGarry KA. Product Description
This volume is a new edition of a reference first published in 1976 that has served as an international standard for diagnosis of hepatobiliary diseases. Thoroughly revised to reflect recent developments in diagnostic technology, medical therapy, and transplant surgery, this new edition provides current, internationally accepted nomenclature and diagnostic and prognostic criteria. The book represents the consensus of more than 100 of the world's leading authorities in information science, adult and pediatric hepatology, liver transplant surgery, vascular and biliary surgery, radiology, pathology, infectious diseases, immunology, and genetics. Each disease is characterized as to definition; clinical, laboratory, radiologic, morphologic, and etiologic criteria for diagnosis; and prognosis. Of special importance is the emphasis placed on new techniques for determining the influence of various therapeutic modalities on prognosis. Where appropriate, the book delineates prognostic criteria to assist clinicians in proper timing of liver transplantation. ... Read more

Product Description

In several liver diseases, the underlying cause cannot always be eliminated, i.e. the progression of liver disease cannot be prevented. This is particularly true for non-responders to the treatment of chronic hepatitis C (HCV). It is relevant for more than 40% of patients with HCV genotype 1 and up to 20% of patients with genotype 2 or 3. Several approaches are now underway to prevent or ameliorate mechanisms of disease progression. In Asia, and particularly in Japan, Glycyrrhizine-SNMC has been widely used for this purpose. At present, SNMC is under clinical evaluation in Europe.

This book, the proceedings of the Falk Workshop on `Prevention of Progression in Chronic Liver Disease -- An Update on SNMC (Stronger Neo-Minophagen C)? (Part IV of the XII Falk Liver Week, in honour of Hans Popper?s 100th birthday) held in Freiburg, Germany, on 22 October 2003, is devoted to the understanding of basic mechanisms of fibrogenesis, the state of the art of non-invasive markers of disease progression that may substitute liver biopsy in the future, and of other predictive parameters indicating disease progression, in particular the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. All these problems are particularly relevant for chronic hepatitis C. A better characterization of so-called non-responders for the treatments available is crucial for the development of new strategies preventing or postponing disease progression. Such strategies should influence fibrogenesis and, thus, cirrhosis formation as well as the development of life threatening complications of liver cirrhosis, including hepatocellular carcinoma. In this volume, the available information on SNMC as an approach to prevent progression of chronic liver disease is discussed by several internationally renowned authors who report on the mechanisms of liver fibrogenesis and fibrolysis, on non-invasive markers of disease progression, and on hepatocellular carcinoma as one of the major complications of liver cirrhosis nowadays. Finally, experts from Japan report on their knowledge and experience concerning the drug SNMC/Glycyrrhizine in the prevention of cirrhosis and HCC, and first study results from Europe are presented.

Product Description
Although cell turnover in normal adult liver is extremely low, hepatic tissue is notorious for its almost infinite capacity toregenerate in cases of viral, toxic or traumatic damage.Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most frequent malignanciesworldwide and causes more than a million deaths per year. Themechanisms governing normal proliferation and malignant transformationof liver cells are of utmost interest for the understanding ofregeneration and hepatocarcinogenesis and for the development of newtherapeutic strategies. Therefore, the International Falk Workshop held in Halle, Germany, onJanuary 29--30 1998, focused on the issues of normal andmalignant liver cell growth. Knowledge in this area of research hasexpanded rapidly during recent years. This book of proceedingssummarizes the latest advances both in basic science and clinicalresearch. Stimulating discussion set the basis for the development ofnew strategies in diagnosis and treatment of hepatocellular carcinomaand for the manipulation of regeneration in cases of acute or chronicloss of functional liver tissue. ... Product Description
The hepatocyte adapts its metabolic and excretory function tochanges in nutrient supply, xenobiotics, cytokines and hormones, whichprovides a basis for the role of the liver in the maintenance of thebody's homeostasis. Such adaptations of hepatocellular function to theenvironment require not only structures for recognition of signalmolecules and for the sensing of environmental alterations, but alsomachineries which transfer this information to intracellular effectorsites. Considerable progress has been made during recent years withrespect to the understanding of membrane-associated receptor systemsand the molecular mechanisms by which signals are transduced fromthese receptors to the effector sites inside the cell, i.e. thenucleus and other organelles, the cytoskeleton and various enzymes. Acomplex signal transduction network involving a coordinated action ofa variety of protein kinase and phosphatase cascades has beenidentified. Such signalling events are not only important for theunderstanding of the physiological regulation of liver cell function, but also provide new pathophysiological and therapeutic aspects. This book, the proceedings of a Falk Workshop on `Signalling in theLiver' (Part IV of the Liver Week Freiburg 1997) held in Freiburg,Germany, October 6, brings together an international forum of expertsin both basic science and clinical applications. ... Product Description
This book, the proceedings of Falk Symposium 100, `Gut and theLiver', held in Freiburg, Germany, 29--31 May 1997,comprehensively reviews the physiological and pathophysiologicalinteractions between the intestine and the liver as well as betweenintestinal and hepatic diseases. Apart from the basic aspects of theintestinal microflora and the immune system of the gut, gastrointestinal permeability and translocation as well as thecontribution of the intestine and the intestinal bacteria to themetabolism of bile acids, amino acids and drugs are discussed. Inaddition, experimental as well as clinical data demonstrating thesignificance of gut-derived bacterial toxins for the development ofliver diseases and the effect of liver diseases on gastrointestinalfunctions are discussed. The major aim of this book, therefore, is tohighlight the interactions between gut and liver at the molecularlevel as well as in clinical disease. ... Read more
