Author is only an "expert" in ignorance.I burned my copy.
I destroyed my copy so that no one would ever read it and assume it had validity.This guy knows little about lyme and doesn't stay current.I hope people read these reviews before they waste their money.My copy was given to me, but it will never attempt to mis-inform anyone else.I agree with other reviewers, if you could rate a book zero, that is what this book would have gotten.

Detrimental to those in need of treatment! Take caution.
I contracted chronic Lyme disease a year ago and was not diagnosed for ten months. During that time I got worse and worse and not one doctor helped me. In fact they were rude and didn't listen. The over all feeling in the medical community is one of disbelief and hostility. This book is the epitome of those feelings. Reading this book made me feel the same way I did listening to a doctor tell me that the positive test was not significant. This book does nothing more than berate those that are already sick and frightened. It makes you feel as though you are the one with the problem. The disease is all in your head. Also I think I should add that the author of this book was appointed to the Lyme Advisory community for California and then was promptly removed because the people that had Lyme Disease were so angry with his attitude towards them. Beware of this book. It will do nothing other than make you feel bad about a disease that is not your fault. Which leads me to the age old question, Which is worse the cure or the disease? When there are books like this on the market perpetuating the horrible attitude towards truly sick people it is neither. Until this opinion is dispelled, there is no disease and there will be no cure despite how sick you really are.

Information is not helpful; controversy is not explained
This book will only confuse you if you are looking for real answers to the Lyme disease controversy or help for an undiagnosed illness.Barbour does not give you enough information to make informed decisions regarding treatment or diagnosis of an actual entrenched and untreated case of Lyme disease.Your money will be better spent buying books by Denise Lang, Karen Forschner, or Polly Murray.

Alan G. Barbour is no friend to the Lyme patient. I suffer from chronic Lyme disease and was terribly disappointed and angered by this book. There was a pervasive, underlying thread which downplayed the number of Lyme cases, the severity of the disease, and the complexity of the disease.Barbour's disregard for the plight of Lyme patients is demonstrated in his inexcusable lack of treatment guidelines besides a cookbook reliance on a short term antibiotic therapy which has been clinically proven wrong for many patients.Many, many people are suffering with Lyme disease and cannot get proper treatment. If you buy this book, you will be, in my opinion, adding to this suffering.You will also be less informed when you have finished this book than before you began.Please don't add credibility to Barbour as a Lyme disease expert by buying this book.

A comprehensive, objective and informative treatise
Barbour (Prof. of Medicicine & Microbiology at U, Texas, and specialist on the topic) provides a sympathetic, wide-ranging look at Lyme disease and related topics that reveals not only the difficulties in fully understanding the disease, but (in the process) the difficulties in diagnosis that medicine faces in many areas of diagnosis and treatment.The book is very clearly written and interesting to both layperson and medic.The lack of references is unfortunate, but as a leading expert, Barbour may be considered a primary source.If you want to be told you have Lyme disease, you may be disappointed.If you want to understand why that diagnosis might be problematical, and what the various sources of difficulty are, you will be more than satisfied.In the end, you will also be in a position to participate in a process of participatory diagnosis and treatment between patient and medic with a great deal more certainty, based on real knowledge. ... SUMMARY
A body of evidence (ref 3 and 4)suggests that the causative agent of Lyme disease, B. burgdorfen, can cross the placenta and infect the fetus. There are also several reports that suggest that this may be associated with a poor fetal outcome. However, the majority of studies have not been able to identify B. burgdorferi as a direct cause of spontaneous abortions, congenital anomalies, or neurologic sequelae in infants.

It is essential to realize that in the pregnant woman Lyme disease is a clinical diagnosis regardless of her serologic status. Because the precise risk to the fetus from an infected pregnant female is not yet clear, it is important to be aggressive in the diagnosis and management of Lyme disease. This is important not only for the fetus, but also for the mother. The mother is certainly at risk for serious and potentially debilitating manifestations of Lyme disease including arthritis, carditis, and neurologic problems.

In conclusion, Lyme disease in pregnancy is a clinical diagnosis irrespective of serologic status.

The diagnosis must be made promptly, and treatment must be instituted in the interest of maternal, in addition to fetal, welfare. ... Read more

very handy guide
Definitely a different book. I have just recently been diagnosed with lime disease andI found this bookextremely helpful with learning about my disease.

Does not reflect real life patient experiences.
This book does have lots of sources of information about Lyme Disease, but little practical information for the patient about the disease. It gives lots of medical and governmental citations. It also gives lots of "vocabulary builders" that are helpful when trying to read technical medical research articles. The book, however, is very generic. It seems there are many books like this one for other illnesses. It has no feel for the patient's experience, it does not even hint at the very real controversies that surround this illness.

The back cover of the book says it best: it is not written from a layperson's/ patients point of view nor is it written from a clinical/ provider prospective, it is a "soucebook" of "official" and "peer-reviewed" medical literature. I would add the word "selective" to the previous statement. Also, place heavy emphasis on the word "Sourcebook", it tells you about where to go for information. Don't expect to get something this book is not.It is "A Reference Manual for Self-Directed Patient Research". ... Read more

Not what I expected!
"Research on Lyme Disease", Peter van Nitch, ed. turned out to be an expensive mistake ($39 for this thin, 130 page, book). There is not a lot of patient-useful information here. Of the five original articles (none are reviews), two are about dogs; one is an epidemiological prevention strategy paper; one covers diagnostic tests and epidemiology specific to Slovakia; and the fifth concludes that there is no, or little, interaction between a Lyme spirochaete and another infectious agent (HGE). ... Great Neurology. Poor Psychiatry. Conservative Camp
This book is exceptional at showing the severe effects of the Lyme spirochete on the brain. While it is old, it has good use for clinicians in both Lyme camps. The book's weakness is a complete lack of appreciation for the subtle, common and serious psychological, psychiatric and information processing problems caused by Lyme. In other words, if Lyme can cause a stoke it certianly can cause sadness. If it can do serious damage, it can do subtle damage. Unfortunately, some neurologists like the author do not appear able to see these types of deficits, which newer research and experience has shown are present. Further, the book relies on dubious labs using limited strains and test protiens. Having said all this, I am logging on to buy my THIRD copy! Which shows that physicians who want better labs and complete and full antibiotic treatment, do read the other side and are willing to glean pearls. I hope Dr. Riek will join Dr. Fallon at Columbia and write an update.

One of the best books on this subject ever written
Unfortunately this book was published in 1991, which makes certain aspects of the textdated. I have not found any revision. Some of the more recent serology and other testing was not known at that time. As an example MRI has been significantly improved since 1991.
In spite of it's 1991 publicationdate thisis a carefully composed and well documented monograph of the NeurologicImplications of this terrible disease. The author is a well respected Neurologist.Excellent References for each chapter.
At the time it was written the controversry surrounding Lyme Disease was not so combative and political as it is today.
Keeping that in mind this book isa wonderful resource for any physician treating Lyme patients.
The discussion includes Pathogenesis, Pathology, Clinical Features
and an excellent documentation of the unquestioned fact of Neurological Lyme Disease (Neuroborreliosis). There are treatment recommendations that are still useful today and a sample of helpful color plates. There is a valuable discussion of Seronegative Lyme Disease andof Magnetic Resonance Images. Keep in mind that this book is only 130 pages. But not a word is wasted and it is unfortunate that a revision and expanded edition has not been published. Anyone treating these patients should have this book in addition to other appropriate texts. I have an interest in this subject and readers with similar concerns are invited to share information with me.
