Best Info on Lymphedema
If I were the magic book fairy, I would put this book in the hands of every breast cancer survivor.As a recent breast cancer surviver (my lumpectomy and sentinel node surgery was in Jan 2010, followed by radiation), I found this book offered me the most complete and detailed information I sought.In fact, I had checked this book out of the hospital cancer center library and was so impressed, I purchased a copy from Amazon.It addressed all of my questions and concerns, from symptoms through treatment(s), including a complete illustrated explanation of lymphatic self-massage.I had learned the technique from my physical therapist, and this serves as an extremely handy reference for refreshing my knowledge.Further, the book is enhanced by the personal stories of several cancer survivors' experience with their own lymphedema.

How about 10 stars!!
This is by far the most informative and encouraging book I have read on this subject.

My wife and I found lots of great help in this book.Detailed enough for our academic minds.Honest enough to be helpful in a difficult time.And staightforward enough to be understandable.We showed it to our therapist who liked it enough to include it in her list of resources for others with lymphedema.We highly recommend it.

Finding Help
I found this book very informative and comforting.It not only tells about lymphedema, about why it starts and what can be done about it, but the book has the stories of other women with lymphedema and shows what they are doing for their condition.It helped make me aware that I am not the only person to have had problems after I was treated for breast cancer.Since my therapy for lymphedema I have used this book to maintain my arm's shape. I think the book is a wonderful guide.It was a real relief for me to find this book.

Book Helps Person in Small Town
I have had lymphedema for several years.I live outside a very small town which does not have a person who knows how to treat lymphedema.I found this book on Amazon.com and it gave me information that helped find atherpist in another city.

I must travel nearly two hundred miles to reachmy therapist, but with her help and with the information in this book, theswelling has gone down and my arm is almost back to normal.In anothercouple of weeks I should not need to see the therapist any longer.Becauseof the detailed information in this book, and because of the therapist'sinstructions I know how to bandage my arm, what kind of sleeve to wear onit, exercises I should and should not do, even what kind of breathing helpsmy arm not swell.

Book of Gloom and Doom
When I was first diagnosed, I immediately bought this book.
After scouring through the pages, I just felt overwhelmed, depressed and really despondant.
It proved to be somewhat informative (which can also be achieved on-line), but extremely depressing as most "stories" were about the down-sides of this disease and not really concluded in any way.
Yes, LE is not curable and there ARE downsides, but my success with my treatments have led me to a very positive place in the management of my care.
I have not picked up this book since the last day that I read it other than to look at the diagrams of the lymphatic system.

Better without it
It had very little new info in it--You can get as much on the websites--well written, but not worth it.

It gives a point of view
Lymphedema is something that crept up on me unawares, after many tests my vascular doctor diagnosed me with primary lymphedema. I got some PT, which consisted of being pumped by a Compression Pump, once, a foot massage, and help in garment fitting. I think the most important thing is the garment, Though the mayo clinic, is saying that using Horse chestnuts is as good as wearing compression hose, which I have been doing for a good while.
Got to check into those horse chestnuts!!! It took me awhile to find a comfortable set of comp stockings, but I think that they are helpful, as also keeping your body clean, My leg measurements are down an inch since I started wearing them.
Bad things about lymphedema, weight gain, pain and itching in your legs. Gotta moisturize that skin!!!!! Eucerin Calming cream is da best. This book, I read too late, I had heard all of this before, at a website called Lymph-notes, ran by Ann, one of the authors. The book says that you should not use compression pumps for lymphedema. I can see why, my pump has moved the Lymph fluid up into my groin and abdomen.
There is no cure for Primary or secondary lymphedema. This book gives some symplistic info about Lymphedema, but I was disappointed, I had read most of it on her website.

As a certified lymphatic therapist, I was extremely impressed with this book. I highly recommend to patients first diagnosed with lymphedema, as well as to therapists. The most important step when first diagnosed is to understand what lymphedema is, how to prevent making it worse, and what will actually make it better. This book is a comprehensive overview of lymphedema and related diseases. It is very easy to read and comprehend even for lay people. The book explains the causes of the diseases and provides very explicit guidelines for how to manage the given disease. For instance, it has a section with pictures explaining how to perform the special lymph massage that drains the lymphatic veins of their fluid. Another useful feature of this book is that it explains the difference between conditions that are very often confused with lymphedema, even by medical doctors, such as lipedema. It also covers venous disease of the blood flow which is a common complication of for instance lipedema. I would especially recommend this book to individuals who suffer from lymphedema or related conditions in order for them to learn more about exactly what is happening in their body and what the best treatment would be.

Lymphedema Management
This book is a great review of classes I have taken in Manual Lymph Drainage and a wonderful addition of information.Lymph Drainage is so important in our personal health care.

Zuther's "Lymphedema Management" certainly is the most comprehensive guide for practioners! The book covers all aspects of lymphedema management in a clear, concise and logical fashion. Coping with Lymphedema is a good and thorough book dealing with a tough condition and doesn't get much airplay in the media. The book is laid out well so you can find more quickly find the answers to your questions. I recommend it.

This book gives you a great overview of what Lymphedema is and it gives you great advice from those who have Lymphedema and how they coped with it.Some doctors do not recognize the condition at first butonce you know what you have, get this book.It will prepare you for what your options are as far as treatment and maintenance once you get it under control.It explains how you will never get rid of the condition but it is controllable.It answers so many questions that you think of after you are told that you have Lymphedema.

LYMPHE-WHAT?

Primary (hereditary) Lymphedema (1-in-6000)...may involve blocked/oversized/underdeveloped lymph vessels. More common secondary Lymphedema results from disease/other trauma.

Grade1: Lymphedema often begins with pitting edema - tissues swell due to excess fluid. Small indentations form when pressing with a finger.

Grade2: Lymphedema is chronic, and elevation may no longer help. The skin no longer pits, but hardens as fibrous tissue develops. Thick, coarse skin may ulcerate, and bacteria may enter and bring on extremely painful cellulitis, a soft-tissue skin infection.

PREVENTING LYMPHEDEMA BY PREVENTING CANCER:
Numerous books teach cancer prevention, and Mary Kerney Levenstein's Everyday Cancer Risks and How to Avoid Them aptly and broadly does this. (The name, Mary Kerney, or the ISBN, 0895295059, works well in an Amazon search.) Also, impediment to lymph flow by bras is argued as a possible causation for breast cancer in, Dressed to Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras.

PREVENTING OF LYMPHEDEMA OR ITS WORSENING:
-get needed Lymphedema treatment
-prevent all skin penetrations/constrictions involving affected limb/area
-during radiation therapy: examine area, use ointment, avoid chlorinated pools, hot tubs/showers
-during chemotherapy: wear pink wristband on affected limb, get IV/mediport installed in unaffected area.
-during hormone therapy: low-salt, low-protein diet; avoid overheating; avoid water retention.

CONVENTIONAL TREATMENTS:
-Staple of medical practice in Europe 100+ years, but recent in U.S.
-Treatment goal: open secondary lymphatic vessels to drain affected limb into normally functioning tributaries.
-Manual lymph drainage, MLD: specialized, sequenced, slow-rhythm, gentle massage pressure that moves lymph fluid.
-Complete/complex decongestive physiotherapy, CDP, may be best (MLD plus scrupulous skin cleansing, plus compression bandages and garments, plus exercise). Nine advantages listed.
---Self bandaging skill necessary due to exercising and airplanes.
---If pregnant, coordinate obstetrician, vascular specialist and Lymphedema therapy expert.
---a compression garment is paramount for reducing swelling and keeping it reduced. Never wear on untreated, swollen limb
---diuretics: Some experts say detrimental. May help if edema plus Lymphedema.
-Pump, newer: peristaltic gradient compression system more closely mimics natural lymph pumping.
---avoid pump if: primary Lymphedema; blood vessel disease; severe arteriosclerosis; massive edema from congestive heart failure; deformity of limb; metastatic cancer in the limb; dermatitis; gangrene; recent skin grafts; deep venous thrombosis; cellulitis(especially).
---should not be used at home
---removes fluid, not protein,...which can become fibrotic and impede lymph flow.
---complications in 30-55% with leg Lymphedema
-Steroids: powerful drugs that can depress immune system, cause water retention and cause mental depression. Occasionally used for inflammation or for enlarged lymph nodes or for tumor obstruction of lymph flow.
-Benzopyrones, in clinical trials in Australia, France, India and China, have improved Lymphedema without compression garments. Minor side effects, but excessive dosage caused liver damage and possibly death. Many US physicians skeptical. National Lymphedema Network and others strongly advise against Benzopyrones. Not FDA approved, but available at 2000 compounding pharmacies stateside.
-Surgery, for the most part, is considered as a last resort - limited success and high risk of complications.
-Injections of a patient's own white blood cells, in one study, rapidly reduced swelling...
-Accessing improved European treatments requires special effort.
-Pain management strategies: monitoring, refitting compression garment, exercise routine, getting help with skin problems, accessing mind-body techniques, discuss with doctor and Lymphedema therapist.

CRITICAL RESEARCH:
The lymph node that receives dye injected around a cancerous tumor drains that tumor and is the "sentinel" and only lymph node requiring removal and examination.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS:
Alternative medicine, with an interest in ancient healing practices, focuses on the mind-body connection and on health rather than illness. An alternative remedy may work even if the medical establishment disagrees. (So far the AMA has remained silent on Lymphedma and its treatments.) Alternative (as complementary) medicine enhances the immune system and one's feelings of well-being, both compromised in Lymphedema. Psychoneuroimmunology, guided imagery, hypnotherapy, acupuncture, biofeedback, herbal medicine, homeopathy and meditation are explained.

Is alternative therapy for you? Read a lot; learn practitioner's qualifications; speak with experienced others; monitor progress; report problems; trust your instincts - replace therapist if necessary. For almost all serious cases, using both medical and alternative treatments, along with comprehensive Lymphedema treatment, symptoms lessened, unwanted body fluid decreased, infections decreased, and a relatively normal life returned.

GETTING TREATMENT:
-Choosing Practitioners: Four pages of specific questions for the doctor and Lymphedema therapist
-Choosing Treatment Facility: A good facility is described.

INSURANCE:
Nine strategies, including using attorney, elected state representatives and state insurance committee.

-family: explain your needs and limitations, and maintain self-compassion; explain to children.
-sexuality: coping skills
-friends: be open, accept help.
-job: illegal to be fired because of ill health - use your union

1. These 1000 words cannot replace the authors' 100,000 words - do read the book.
2. The 2005 Living Well With Lymphedema by Ehrlich et al is also excellent - neither can replace the other.

The best of a mighty thin field...
First, anyone who is looking for books on lymphedema will find out fast that books on lymphedema are kind of like treatments for the the disorder: mighty few and far between.Of all the available books, this one is the best of a thin, thin crop.There are chapters on the origins of lymphedema, symptoms, the (few) treatments, diet and exercise, coping and other life issues.And while they are very informative, as other reviewers have pointed out, the authors do focus heavily on upper limb lymphedema.Readers with lower limb lymphedema get tossed a bone of info targeted to their needs every now and then, but the primary emphasis of this book is on lymphedema as the result of breast cancer treatment. Still, readers with lower limb lymphedema can take most of the info in this book and apply it to their own situation.This book is better than nothing, which is pretty much what will be available should this book go out of print.It's a pity that a disorder that affects so many people is virtually ignored by the medical and publishing communities. ... The Right Book For Me

I had to review this book because so many other reviews have helped me in the past. I always read all the reviews of whatever I am thinking of ordering from Amazon.

VOICES OF LYMPHEDEMA is the book I needed. There seems to be so much bad information out there even from our doctors......This was a breath of fresh air even if it is about a serious condition.

I needed to hear from those with Lymphedema. This book was truly helpful and easy to read. It gets to the point from people who have been where I find myself now after a Bi-lateral mastectomy.

Thank you to the authors and all who contributed and all who contributed their reviews before me. Also, thank you Amazon for this opportunity.

Great Info on Lymphedema
As a certified lymphatic therapist, I thought this book gave a detailed explanation of lymphedema, best practice, and how to live a healthy life while managing lymphedema. The format is notes, letters, and even poetry written by patients sharing their personal story, as well as therapists, and doctors. Very informative, excellent tips, easy reading. This is not a textbook. Lots of good websites, as well as information on insurance and appealing a denial. It has a lot of typos, which should have been edited before publication. However,I definitely learned a lot of great tips from this book- I have more than 10 pages folded, as I know I will return to this book as a reference! I recommend this book to all my patients, and to anyone diagnosed with lymphedema looking for accurate information and to be able to feel a connection with others who have been through the same thing and are successfully living and managing their lymphedema.

a little known disease explained by this book
after reading this book, i know more about the disease. it appears that the book primarily focuses on the disease as a byproduct of cancer/cancer therapy, with a multitude of cancer support organizations. i would have liked it to explain in greater detail the other ways of getting this disease; i.e. inheriting or trauma to the limb!

Useful, practical, easy to understand
This is a useful book that provides a lot of information not found on the internet. The advice is very practical, the information accurate and helpful, and the book is easy to read and understand. The author is very honest and neutral about the effects and trials of lympedema. I must note that a patient should see a certified physical therapist for treatment, relying on the book alone is a bad idea. The training and reduction a therapist offers is invaluable. However, the book is a good supplement, allows for refreshing the memory, and is a good reference. It's also useful for close family members, like my husband, so they can understand what is wrong and the regimens required to treat lymphedema. The writing is easily accessible, even a little simplistic. Sometimes the optimism of the author was slightly annoying. That said, the optimism might help someone who is, understandably, feeling depressed or scared about their condition. I will be keeping the book on my shelf for periodic refreshers and I highly recommend it to people with lymphedema or their close family members. I think therapists should keep a stock of these on hand, so patients can simply buy them right then and there, at the first appointment.

"Lymphedema (lim-pha-deema ) is a chronic disease with no true cure at this time. According to www.lymphnotes.com, around seven million people out of the three hundred plus million in the United States have lymphedema (2010 census). And yet so many doctors and patients are clueless about lymphedema. Case and point: In the course of a month earlier this year, I’ve seen two female patients who have developed lymphedema after they boarded an airplane without wearing compression sleeves. Both patients had breast cancer, cancer treatments, and had axillary lymph nodes removed (lymph nodes in the armpits). If their doctors had told them to wear arm compression sleeves on the same side where the axillary lymph nodes were taken out, the patients would not have developed lymphedema in their arms. Planes have low cabin pressure and with less pressure pushing on our skin, edema develops, specifically lymphedema in people at high risk for developing lymphedema."
