Product Description
Lymphedema is a leading cause of long term disability and there is no known cure. However, the scientific literature has shown that medical treatments in the form of simple rehabilitation and hygiene techniques are effective in managing the condition. Unfortunately, resources are not affordable or available in resource-poor communities to provide clinic-based management, so many people go untreated.Fortunately, Community-based rehabilitation approaches provide an alternative to clinic-based services and the potential for people with lymphedema to live full and productive lives. In more recent times, a movement has developed to help people with disabilities become active participants in the society by encouraging communities to recognize the rights of people with disabilities and to provide community-based supports.Today, over 120 million people have lymphedema. The importance of implementing strategies that use proven techniques and involve the community shouldbe taken seriously, as it holds the potential to have a positive impact on the lives of millions of people and on the communities in which they live. ... Product Description
Abstract: Lymph nodes are part of the body's special circulatory system for moving and processing an important fluid called lymph. This clear fluid, which carries disease-fighting white blood cells throughout the body, is filtered by the lymph nodes and then drained into the bloodstream. Lymph also contains proteins and salts removed from the tissues. When lymph nodes are removed as part of cancer treatment or are injured or blocked, fluid can build up in the tissues--usually in an arm or leg. This buildup, and the swelling that results, is called lymphedema. This condition is physically and emotionally distressing. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated,Inaccurate and Expensive
It is short--about one and one third pages. Definitely a rip-off considering the excellent information available free from the internet. The article is dated January 1, 2002, but references three articles from 1996-7. Two of the references deal with vascular diseases of the lower limb and the third with filariasis--none with lymphedema.

The short section on "treatment" is an absolute disaster, and really puts into a nutshell why the lymphedema patient cannot get decent treatment from physicians like Dr. Polsdorfer who write of conditions outside their field of knowledge. This doctor cites physical activity, compression stockings, "devices that actively squeeze fluid out of tissues." and diuretics, the last two which are contraindicated for lymphedema. No mention of the protocols which have been used effectively in Europe and Australia for 50 years and have been recommended by knowledgeable specialty groups--complete decongestive therapy. No mention of short-stretch bandaging, non-elastic garments or manual lymph drainage.

Product Description
This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of documents on the subject of the lymphatic system, a network of tissues and organs. It is made up mainly of lymph vessels, lymph nodes and lymph. Lymph vessels, which are different from blood vessels, carry fluid called lymph throughout the body. Lymph contains white blood cells that defend against germs. Throughout the vessels are lymph nodes. Along with the spleen, these nodes are where white blood cells fight infection. The bone marrow and thymus produce the cells in lymph. The lymphatic system clears away infection and keeps body fluids in balance. If it's not working properly, fluid builds in tissues and causes swelling, called lymphedema. Other lymphatic system problems can include infections, blockage, and cancer. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust. The phosphate may occur as inorganic orthophosphate particles or be part of an organic molecule (organophosphate). Bringing phosphate in any form into the cell and when needed transporting phosphate out of the cell is a necessary activity of phosphate homeostasis for that cell. Due to its high reactivity, phosphorus is never found as a free element in nature. Phosphates are found pervasively in biology. Excerpt:Budd-Chiari syndrome In medicine (gastroenterology and hepatology ), Budd-Chiari syndrome is the clinical picture caused by occlusion of the hepatic veins . It presents with the classical triad of abdominal pain, ascites and hepatomegaly. Examples of occlusion include thrombosis of hepatic veins. The syndrome can be fulminant, acute, chronic, or asymptomatic. It occurs in 1 out of 100,000 individuals and is more common in females. Some 10-20 % also have obstruction of the portal vein. Signs and symptoms The acute syndrome presents with rapidly progressive: severe upper abdominal pain , jaundice , hepatomegaly (enlarged liver ), ascites , elevated liver enzymes , and eventual encephalopathy . The fulminant syndrome presents early with encephalopathy and ascites. Severe hepatic necrosis and lactic acidosis may be present as well. Caudate lobe hypertrophy is often present. The majority of patients have a slower-onset form of Budd-Chiari syndrome. This can be painless. A system of venous collaterals may form around the occlusion which may be seen on imaging as a "spider's web." Patients may progress to cirrhosis and show the signs of liver failure. An asymptomatic form may be totally silent and discovered only incidentally. It is generally not concerning. Causes Often, the patient is known to have a tendency towards thrombosis , although Budd-Chiari syndrome can also be the first symptom of such a tendency. Examples of genetic tendencie... ...
