5-0 out of 5 stars Answers questions you didn't even know you had
The only reason you would be reading this book is if you have lymphoma or know someone who does. You're not in need of platitudes or sympathy, you need answers. This book gives you the answers in clear, everyday speak in a good order.Excellent help.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you think you have lymphoma read this one!
This is an excellent book for anyone who thinks they have, or has been diagnosed with, lymphoma. It's easy to read and understand, not too medical. Just enough medical technical jargon to help you understand the various types of lymphoma, the stages, and the possible treatment options.
It's especially good for family, friends, and caregivers.
I bought one when my wife was diagnosed and bought another as a gift when her brother in law was also diagnosed, each with a different type of lymphoma.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Book to Get You Started
100 Q&A books tend to answer, well, 100 questions.Haing read the book I believe it is a good introduction to lymphoma from a new patient, family member, or loved one.Information is written very clearly and you do not have to wade through ten chapters to find a specific nuggent of information.

The format does have the limitation that each subject mentioned is not explored in-depth compared to some of the other books in the same class. While very good for an introduction, if a patient is down into treatment or trying to decide on a specific treatment among choices, you'll want to look at another text.

But if one of my "family & friends" wanted to learn just a bit more after hearing I was diagnosed (if diagnosed today) I'd recommend this book. For my caregiver, I'd steer them towards more complete texts like Living with Lymphoma or maybe even the more medically oriented books Hodgkin's Disease or The Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas both by Mauch et al. ... Product Description

When neurobiologist Elizabeth M. Adler was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, she learned everything she could about the disease, both to cope with the emotional stress of being diagnosed and to make sure she made the best possible decisions for her treatment. In Living with Lymphoma, she combines her knowledge of lymphoma -- both scientific and personal -- with the desire to help other patients come to grips with this complex, and often baffling, disease.

Adler thoroughly explains the disease, describing the many different kinds of Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the wide range of symptoms, and the various treatment options available. Convinced that understanding lymphoma's biological basis will help patients make better treatment decisions, Adler explains basic cell biology and how the immune system functions. Readers will gain sufficient background to understand and evaluate medical literature, and to ask their physicians questions specific to their own needs.

In the introduction, Dr. Michael R. Bishop of the National Institutes of Health provides a physician's perspective on the delicate nature of doctor-patient relationships in the context of a life-threatening disease -- especially the importance of patient education and open communication in making decisions about treatment options and quality of life.

Drawing on her scientific expertise and personal journey -- as well as her empathy, passion, and humor -- Adler has created a valuable guide for people with lymphoma and the people caring for them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good help mixed in with overkill
First of all, this book is a good help for people going through everything involved with lymphoma.Unfortunately the author was, in parts, writing to professionals who already know as much if not more of the disease than she does. This is not a book to read, but a reference - a good one - for what to expect at certain stages of the disease and how it may be handled. Reading it cover to cover is nearly impossible, there is just too much information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
Suddenly I wanted to learn a lot when my partner was diagnosed with lymphoma. This book truly helped and is my bible. Not too simple and not too difficult, it helped us make some informed decisions and to understand what was happening in the confusing world of chemo and beyond.Since the author faced this disease herself, it's very reassuring to hear her story because she is so open about all her fears and hopes.I wish her well and thank her for a wonderful, science-based, practical book that helped us sort things out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning about Lymphoma
It has been over a year since I bought this book for a family with a person with Lymphoma. It was packed full of info, but as I recall, the print size was a little small for me.I'd just advise you to look at a page online, if small print might be a problem for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars best of all the books
Dr. Adler's book is the best, by far, of all the popular books on lymphoma. It's informative and easy-to-read. If there is a term you don't understand, you can easily find the term explained with a simple Internet search. I am a lymphoma survivor since 2001. I gave away most of the other books on the topic--they were mostly diaries. Although interesting, the others don't match Dr. Adler's in content that helps one fighting lymphoma.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm not a Dr or a Scientist
I was hoping for a book that would give us more practicial information-as the title of the book, "Living with Lymphoma" implies I found most of it very difficult to understand and hard to read. In short the book is too technical for our needs. We just wanted to know, "What does this mean for us,' and " How can we best deal with the my husband's diagnosis of Lymphoma"? I was looking for something practically helpful and encouraging. If that's what you are looking forward this is not the book for you. However, if you'd like to know about T Cells, B Cells and how the cells connect, etc in a very technical manner, this might be the book for you.

One big flaw is that the author, who was diagnosed with cancer again does not talk about the value of a solid support system. In these past weeks since my husband's diagnosis I don't know what we would have done withoutthose who have gathered around us to support and pray for us,which helps us to be and to stay positive. If you are looking at this book because of a recent diagnosis I pray as you read this review God's presence and comfort will lead you to Him. Find a book that gives you hope you don't have to dig for in a way that comforts you and gives you practical advice about what to do and how to do it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The current Gold Standard
Riding on the success of the landmark book Hodgkin's Disease, Mauch et al. compile the current standard reference in Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas (NHL).With articles by experts from around the world in their fields, this book is a valuable reference in all aspects of lymphoma diagnosis, treatment, and late effects. As NHL is actually many different forms of cancer, section 4 on different subtypes is especially good as few lymphoma resources get into that level of detail.

Lymphomas classically manifest themselves in the lymph nodes but can also present in other bodily tissues or systems; the organ where exactly they present may make a very great difference to the strategy that should be adopted for their management. This topic has only recently been consistently addressed as an issue on its own, apart from the rest of the lymphomas, and this text is the first to apply modern systems of classification, diagnosis and management. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I am very happy with this book, although probably the only people who would want to read it are medical students or really autodidactic victims of Hodgkin's.It is very thorough, has good charts and illustrations, and is packed with statistical data. The book itself seems to be good quality; I expect it should hold up well.A family member was recently diagnosed and this book is giving me information and answers that I do not expect to get anywhere else. The discussion of long term life expectancy was very frank and complete.I would not recommend this book for the average lay person; it requires a pretty good foundation of medical knowledge.

I did not pay full price, but bought from one of the third party sellers, although I see today more are available at even less. The amount of information contained here is certainly worth well over $200, so if you get it for the bargain prices, you are getting a very good deal. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!
Do not buy this book.It is written in a cold, uncaring manner, completely inappropriate for anyone touched by the disease.Sure it contains facts, but nothing else.It gives a depressing, negative portrayal of the disease. You'd be better off reading nothing at all.On the other hand, "Living With Lymphoma: A Patient's Guide" is the best resource out there. It is truly a must-have.Sorry I wasted my money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Helpful
I bought this book hoping to learn more about a disease I was diagnosed with, but it was written from a medical doctors point of view and was not very good reading for someone who wanted and needed hope than than something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For The Newly Diagnosed
When I was diagnosed with NH Lymphoma in October 2005, I promptly bought this book. What a lifesaver! This book covers everything a newly diagnosed patient could want. From initial diagnosis, this book takes the patient through all of the different kinds of Non Hodgkins Lymphomas. It tells the patient in detail the kinds of tests that your doctor will most likely order and even give you information on how painful the tests will be. Then it goes into detail on all of the different types of chemotherapy you might undergo as well as radiation therapy, surgeries and biopsies. It takes a tremendous amount of the fear away that a patient has. When I started chemotherapy, the book was right there at my side answering every question that I had. If I had a strange reaction, I reached for the book and sure enough, there was an explanation.

Remember, forewarned is forearmed! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is touched by Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma whether it is a patient or a caregiver.

5-0 out of 5 stars For every NHL Patient and Caregiver
This book can be recommended to anyone whose life has been changed forever by a diagnosis of NHL. If one is filled with trepidation, not wanting to read the cold, hard facts, he/she can be reassured that reading thisparticular book will only help one understand and cope with the disease, not scare them to death.

Had it been available when I was firstdiagnosed, I would have found in one place all the information it took meover two years to gather on my own. It sits by my computer, as necessary asmy dictionary for reference. Thank you, Lorraine Johnston, for writingthis!

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic!
This is a wonderful, must-have book for any NHL patient. It reads like almost like novel, giving accurate, easy to understand information.I especially like the quotes and antecdotes from the patients themselves;people who have been through it, who "get it"...in their ownwords.A fantastic resource. ... Product Description

This book describes unusual cases of cutaneous lymphomas and is of special interest for clinicians and pathologists dealing with the vexing subject of cutaneous lymphoma. In addition to the case description, it gives the clinical, histological, and in most cases also the phenotypical features and the results of molecular techniques. A commentary puts the observations into the context of cutaneous lymphomas. Related papers are cited. The book will be especially helpful in cases which do not fit into the normal spectrum of cutaneous lymphomas. Rare entities of cutaneous lymphomas are demonstrated with high-quality pictures (4-color) and a concise text in an appealing format throughout the book.

The new WHO/EORTC-Classification of Cutaneous lymphomas includes more than 30 entities of Cutaneous T-cell and Cutaneous B-cell lymphomas.
