Product Description

High levels of child malnutrition in developing countries contributeto mortality and have long-term consequences for children’scognitive development and earnings as adults. Recent impact evaluationsshow that many different interventions have had an impact onchildren’s anthropometric outcomes (height, weight, and birthweight), but there is no simple answer to the question “Whatworks?” to address the problem. Similar interventions have widelydifferent results in different settings, owing to differences in localcontext, the causes and severity of malnutrition, and the capacity forprogram implementation.

Impact evaluations of programs supported by the Bank, which aregenerally large-scale, complex inter-ventions in low-capacity settings, show equally variable results. The findings confirm that it should notbe assumed that an intervention found effective in a randomized medicalsetting will have the same effects when implemented under fieldconditions. There are many robust experimental and quasi-experimentalmethods for assessing impact under difficult circumstances often foundin field settings.

The relevance and impact of nutrition impact evaluations could beenhanced by collecting data on service delivery, demand-side behavioraloutcomes, and implementation processes to better understand the causalchain and what part of the chain is weak, in parallel with impactevaluations. It is also important to understand better the distributionof impacts, particularly among the poor, and to document better thecosts and effectiveness of interventions.

High levels of child malnutrition in developing countries arecontributing to mortality and present long-term consequences for thesurvivors. An estimated 178 million children under age 5 in developingcountries are stunted (low height for age) and 55 million are wasted(low weight for height). Malnutrition makes children more susceptibleto illness and strongly affects child mortality. Beyond the mortalityrisk in the short run, the developmental delays caused byundernutrition affect children’s cognitive outcomes andproductive potential as adults. Micronutrientdeficiencies—vitamin A, iron, zinc, iodine, for example—arealso common and have significant consequences. Progress in reducingmalnutrition has been slow: More than half of countries are not ontrack to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of halving the shareof children who are malnou-rished (low weight for age) by 2015. Thefood price and financial crises are making achievement of this goaleven more elusive.

The World Bank has recently taken steps to ex-pand its support fornutrition in response to the underlying need and the increased urgencydue to the crises.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book woke me up!
This book woke me up regarding pharmaceutical drugs and their real purpose....to make money for the big pharma corporations.I have purchased several copies and have given them to friends to read and pass on to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Are looking for a Truthful perspective of the medical community.
I have read many books about the medical community nationally as a whole and also within the urban setting. Dr. Scott Whitaker's book has encompassed wonderful insight as a health care professional, as well as, pertinent information being a patient of these services. There are chapters detailing the ins & outs of the food, pharmacutical and medical industry. These unknown agendas and subject matters are not discussed or provided to the patient when meeting with a health care professional. This book is a treasure for me and I thank Dr. Scott Whitaker for sharing his professional assessment of truths happening right now in the medical practice. Thanks.

2-0 out of 5 stars Has some good points
This book makes good points however I found it very basic.I have studied the subject for years though. It could be good for someone just getting into these areas. I was hoping for more indepth information. SW

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This is an amazing book that will tell you the truth about western medicine and their desire for money and power rather than saving lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flat Out Awesome!!
This might be the best book on the medical and dental scam out there. My father was killed in the hospital when they gave him the wrong medicine. A dentist nearly destroyed my teeth. I am convinced it's safer to avoid these people unless it's a severe emergency like a car accident. Every other page the authors drop one bomb after another and they all check out with facts to back them out. The only other book in the same building with this book is Never Be Sick Again By Raymond Francis. ... Read more

One in twelve people worldwide is malnourished, including 160 million children under the age of five. Every year, about 15 million children die of hunger. Product Description
A HEALTHY YOU: Tame Africa s Child Malnutrition describes the links that connect weaning diarrhea, lactose intolerance, protein malnutrition and the dietary staple of maize. The author observes that the malnutrition has created an infant feeding dilemma across the African nation, evidenced by the importation of pooled breast milk into the continent to feed very ill infants. To address this problem, she highlights the significance of micronutrients in the diet and offers tips on good weaning and healing diets. Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of understanding modern food technologies, including processed foods and environmental degradation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic book
I bought this small book, A Healthy You, more out of curiosity than out of conviction. I found that it was worth every penny, and more. The book is so packed with information that when you start reading it, it stops seeming small. Although its focus is Africa, the book is useful to anybody (or anybody with a child) who has ever struggled with eating difficulties. The book explains in plain language the link between protein malnutrition and lack of vitamins and minerals.

I found the weaning chapter quite interesting too. The weaning difficulties as explained in the book make one realize that protein malnutrition common in Africa is not just due to lack of food; rather, it is the wrong diet that they feed on (corn or maize). I did not know that diseases like pellagra are still common. Here in the US, we enjoy corn-on-the-cob without giving it a second thought because we have so much other food. But then there are corn products likecorn starch and corn syrup which are common in processed foods. This book has made me start looking at baby foods more critically.

There is a segment that deals with feeding very ill people, including AIDS patients. Then there is the weaning chapter. Both are useful. The author is obviously a strong advocate for breast feeding, but she also describes exceptional situations, for example when mothers pass their malnutrition to their babies through breast milk. The book has illustrations which are quite insightful. Overall, it is a good book for mothers, and anybody who looks after the sick, or wants to understand their food-related problems. I will definitely be getting copies for my friends who have young children. ... Read more

Product Description
***This book was awarded the "Prescrire" prize***

This manual gives small hospitals in developing countries expert advice on the management of young children suffering from serious infections or severe malnutrition. Addressed to doctors and senior nurses, the manual aims to provide all the practical and technical guidance needed to facilitate quick decisions and life-saving interventions. Although outpatient care is included, the manual concentrates on the inpatient management of diseases known to be the major killers of children in the developing world. Conditions covered range from pneumonia, diarrhea, and severe malnutrition to malaria, meningitis, and measles.

The core of the manual provides detailed treatment instructions for individual clinical conditions, specifying the standard course and duration of treatment. Separate chapters cover the management of over twenty diseases in children presenting with cough or difficult breathing, diarrhea, and fever. Additional chapters cover the management of common problems in young infants, of children suffering from severe malnutrition, and of children with HIV/AIDS. The remaining chapters provide detailed guidelines for supportive care, propose a system for the regular monitoring of patients, and offer advice on when and how to discharge the child from hospital.

Further practical assistance is provided in five appendices, which offer an illustrated guide to the performance of practical procedures, list of recommended dosages and regimen for some 57 drugs, give formulas and recipes for treating severely malnourished children, and provides tables and charts for assessing nutritional status and recovery. Advice on play therapy and the construction of simple toys is also included. The manual is part of a series of tools that support the WHO Integrated Management of Childhood Illness initiative.
