The investigative historian at work
In "Il disperso di Marburg" we find ourselves caught up in the investigations of Nuto Revelli in to the disappearance of a 'good German' soldier during the German occupation of Italy in 1943-45.Initially, unused to the diary/journal format of the book we can find ourselves slightly disinterested. However, this is quickly overcome as we get caught up in Revelli's own investigations. An expert in his field, that of investigative historian, he gathers oral testimony, searches Italian and German military records, overturns every stone in an effort to get to the root of the mystery. Gripping as the investigation proceeds, "il disperso di Marburg" also provides excellent insight into attitudes of Italians to Germans both during the German occupation of Italy, and also post war.Overall, a gripping and informative text which is also thoroughly enjoyable! ...
