Description:
An epidemiological and environmental study in the Biancavilla area (Sicily, Italy) was recently prompted by an impressively high incidence of malignant pleural mesothelioma. Epidemiology suggested an environmental contamination by amphibole fibres rather than risks related to a specific occupational activity. The aim of this study is to describe the diffusion of fibrous amphiboles in the area and identify their source. Fibrous amphiboles were found in the products from the local quarries, which had been used for years to build houses. After sampling all around Biancavilla, three sites were detected and they were characterized by an abundant presence of mineral fibres. Fibrous amphiboles were also recovered from building materials (mortar and plasters) and airborne particulates sampled in urban sites with high dust emissions due mainly to unpaved roads. Moreover, amphibole fibres were detected in the lung tissue of a woman who died of pleural mesothelioma. The results of this study suggest that the amphibole fibre diffusion in the Biancavilla environment lasted for many years and had been maximum during the sixties and the seventies with the uncontrolled development of the local building industry. Today, the environmental situation results to be changed following both the closing of the stone quarries and the urbanization works after 2001, above all the asphalting of dusty roads. Anyway sporadic mesothelioma cases have still to be expected in the next years. ... Read more

Product Description
This practical book has two main goals. The first is to showthat thoracoscopic techniques are simple, require onlyshort-termhospitalization, use only basic equipment, andare within the capability of not only surgeons, but otherspecialists as well. The second is to emphasizethe excitingaspects of this endoscopic procedure with its wide varietyof findings in the pleura, the diaphragm, the lung, and themediastinum. Under direct vision a general diagnosis is madewithin seconds and confirmed by microscopy within hours.Forty endoscopic pictures show the main pattern of pleuraldiseases; one hundred drawings, schemes, and X-raysdemonstrate all the technical aspects. In addition, indications and outcome of pleural effusions, pleurodesis in chroniceffusions, spontaneous pneumothorax, thoracoscopic lung biopsy, empyema, andlaser coagulation inthe pleural cavity are described. This new approachdemonstrates that thoracoscopy is less invasive and saferthan thoracotomy. Physicians who have carefully studiedthis practical guide tohelp them master the techniqueshould be able to perform thoacoscopy withoutdifficultiesor complications. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Airborne fibers have long been recognized as a major health hazard in certain industries and exposure to fibers in the general environment may also cause adverse effects such as cancer, in particular, mesothelioma. Asbestos is the best-known fiber carcinogen and, in the construction industry, is being widely replaced by substitute materials. Yet to perform properly, these materials must physically resemble asbestos. Does this mean that they too are hazardous? In this volume, invited experts in cell and tumor biology review the processes of cell division and the influence of fibers upon them. The biology of tumors and other diseases of the lung is discussed in some detail and in several papers the molecular basis of malignant transformation in mesothelioma cells is considered. These contributions combine to give the book a unique, scientific slant on an important environmental issue. It will interest research scientists investigating carcinogenesis and the biology of cell division, thoracic physicians, public health specialists, and those concerned with environmental control policy. ... Product Description
The known commercial uses of new mineral-fibre substitutes and non-asbestiform synthetics presents a potentially great health risk because most materials have not been tested for pathogenicity - "Fiber Toxicology" was written to help prevent a repeat of the asbestos dilemma. It examines the lessons learned from the toxicological study of asbestos and provides a framework for new toxicological studies on non-asbestos fibers. This book also introduces new state-of-the-art concepts and methods for evaluating the toxicology of various fibre-types on different pulmonary systems. It covers topics from the molecular biology to cell biology (in vitro) and from intraperitoneal to inhalation models. It also examines some of the most important controversies in fibre toxicology: "in vitro" versus "in vivo" and alternative methods of exposure (intraperitoneal) to physiological methods (inhalation). Finally, the proactive angle of this text is further enhanced with a chapter on carbon fibre toxicology - the only available lucid discussion of this emerging field. ... Read more

Product Description
"DEAR SIR,--It is now about five months since you expressed to me a wish that I might be induced to imbody, in a few pages, my views on the peculiar interest I attached--as you had been informed by a common friend--to the most popular German novel of the age, Gustav Freytag''s _Soll und Haben_. I confess I was at first startled by your proposal. It is true that, although I have not the honor of knowing the author personally, his book inspired me with uncommon interest when I read it soon after its appearance in 1855, and I did not hesitate to recommend translation into English, as I had, in London, recommended that of the Life of Perthes, since so successfully translated and edited under your auspices. 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, practical, and an interesting read!
I happen to know something about mesothelioma, the incurable form of lung cancer that is the subject of Ruda's book. I have a very good friend who worked for Johns-Mansville which was the leading producer of asbestos, which causes the disease.Ruda offers a unique way of living with hiscancer: he leaves it alone, and has persuaded it to leave him alone! Soundscrazy, but obviously, it has worked for him, and I see no reason why itcan't work for anybody. The book fascinated me for its unique point ofview, its reader-friendly style, and most of all, the inspiring way ithelps, advises, and encourages. ...
