Product Description
A large proportion of migraine sufferers find diet is a key factor for their migraine problems. Identifying and eliminating "trigger" foods proves very helpful. This book identifies prime suspects and explains how they work by using an exclusion diet specific to migraine. It then suggests a plan for substituting ingredients in the diet, coping with cravings, eating out and eating at other people's houses, including assertiveness skills to help sufferers avoid eating trigger foods out of politeness. The book looks at combining the migraine diet with weight loss diets and exercise regimes, as well as helping children to cope with diet restrictions. It suggests ways of eating a balanced diet to improve general health and well-being. It emphasizes the need to consult a doctor before embarking on any form of self-help nutritional therapy. ... Meet America's newest little hero, Migraine Boy--Charlie Brown's bi-polar second cousin, an existentially aware Richie Rich. Spawned in the pages of alternative 'zines and giveaway newspapers, Migraine Boy got his big break when R.E.M. chose cartoonist Fiering to do the art for the cover of Monster. Since then, the strip has started to gain nationwide recognition and now appears in Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, and the Village Voice, among others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the best headache you'll ever have
This comic strip was brought to my attention via REM's "Monster", many years ago. That horrible excuse for a CD was good for at least one thing!

The evil twin of Charlie Brown, Migraine Boynever gets a break, but that doesn't stop him from taking his frustrationsout on all the neighborhood kids who bug him. These strips have varyingstyles of humor - alternately twisted, violent, morbid, one-liner, anddeadpan. The art looks like it was drawn by someone actually sufferingfrom a migraine: very frantic scribbling, wavy lines... all the better toconvey the special atmosphere of this strip.Give it a try! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and Informative
After years of suffering and going from one doctor to another I finally obtained the needed guidance from this book. Through its pages you are offered much information and the possibility of finding the proper avenue to health. Not all headaches are the same or stem from the same cause, therefore a cautionary but educated approach is the best route to take, and the authors with their experts (including a Naturopathic Physician)do so admirably. If one's objective is to rid or at least ameliorate their condition I strongly recommend the information compiled in this book. ... Read more

It goes through the four phases of a migraine. It's exactly what happens to me except for the aura.

Product Description
Cluster headaches(also called cluster migraines or Horton's syndrome) are similar to migraines but are much more severe. Attacks arrive in clusters lasting weeks to months, with months or years between headache cycles. Common medications are ineffective at providing relief, and the pain is so excruciating that many victims have committed suicide. Unlike other headaches, one cannot simply "take a couple of aspirin" and continue with everyday events. Cluster headaches affect one out of every 400 adults, yet many victims suffer alone. Their symptoms were either misdiagnosed, or they are unaware of current treatment modalities. But help is now available for the thousands of men and women who are afflicted with this debilitating ailment. This concise manual on cluster headaches is furnished to encourage and support cluster headache victims, their families, and the doctors who are trying to help them. It contains more than 200 profiles of cluster headache sufferers, along with candid excerpts by medical doctors and their patients. More importantly, it clarifies symptoms, elaborates on factors likely to provoke the condition, and provides the most up-to-date, cutting-edge therapies for treating and relieving the pain. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars cluster headaches by seymour diamond, md
quote:"treatment.relief for ....."This should never again be offered on Amazon (you are too far above this type of lit.)
It consists of an intro, a few paragraphs (only a few sentences each) to describe a headache...the rest of the entire content of this so called "help book", consists of list upon list of what other people have said about or how they described their headaches. When he says"from the personal experiences of " who were these people? "provided to encourage.."he needs a ghost writer, people with headaches who buy a book penned by a "MD", you want their opinion, not what so and so says about
their heads. They look for the book that will give encouragement in the form of offering viable, scientificly
researched data that will help them, not just give you the sense...move over, there are plenty of others out there with headaches and read what they say.
Sorry, but it was, for an avid reader of above average intelligence, a VERY dissapointing book. I am sure the author must have much to say that could help the buyer and sufferer, it is well hidden within the book, if so.Not that he/she should give up, but please find a competent assistant, and write your own views.Thank you for giving me a chance to review one of Amazons books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Still waiting for answers.
This book touts "Treatment and Relief for Cluster, Cluster Migraine, and Recurring Eye-Stab Pain," but gives little clinical information.Instead, this book offers a few paragraphs of medical observation, followedby dozens of statements made by unidentified sufferers; covering symptoms, triggers, treatment and relief (which Cluster Headache sufferers know isstill impossible).I've been waiting years for conclusive information onthis excruciating condition.Reading page after page of complaints similarto my own nearly triggered another cluster headache!"Threestars" because I finally saw my crazy symptoms in print and know I'mnot alone.Buy this book for emotional support, or to educate others aboutthe condition.Don't buy it to be wowed by recent medical insight andadvances. ... Product Description
For the first time, a migraine sufferer presents-with the close guidance of a renowned medical specialist-a comprehensive, sympathetic, up-to-date, and understandable survey of this painful and life-disrupting disorder and the measures you can take to break its iron grip.

In Managing Your Migraine, Susan Burks, a longtime victim of the illness, speaks to all those who have not yet achieved adequate personal control and are dissatisfied with their current medical treatment. Tailoring her book to your individual needs through the use of self-surveys and questionnaires, she detailslifestyle strategies for avoiding migraine and shows how to develop new skills for its control. She fully explains the role of dietary triggers in migraine attacks and outlines the three levels of dietary restriction appropriate for different types of sufferers. She also answers your questions about the effect of female hormones on migraine, the relationship between migraine and depression, and the potential dangers from nonheadache medications, noxious odors, and chemicals.

When as a last resort drug remedies are needed, the author discusses in detail the cost/benefit ratio of popular medications and explains how to avoid misusing them. Addressing both over-the-counter and prescription medications, the book identifies the most effective medicines, concentrating on those with the lowest potential for unpleasant and/or dangerous side effects, and gives migraine sufferers practical tips for fine-tuning their dosages.

Managing Your Migraine speaks to your needs as a migraine sufferer. It confirms that you suffer from a genuine physical illness and that others share your frustration, disappointments, and anger. 4-0 out of 5 stars migraine information with explanations!
In my experience, the best book about migraines (although now a bit old).Mostly, I have found all migraine books to provide the same information - what foods to avoid, what are common triggers, etc. This one, written bysomeone who has had extensive personal experience with migraines, givesmuch the same information but also provides background and possibleexplanations for why the things she has found, work for her.For myself, knowing the "why" is at least as important for knowing the"what."

It was also encouraging to read her own experiences. Often, I get frustrated with the books written by doctors, who haveexperience with patients, but don't actually experience the intolerableagony of migraine.Reading a book by someone who has gone through it allhelps. Her review of the medical literature was important as a start formy own attempts to understand what is going on in my head when it feelslike it is about to explode. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not Now--I Have A Headache
There are headaches and then there are migraine headaches. The differenceis an emotionally and physically inbalance of toleration. In this easy toread informative book, Dr. Elkind has put together in Q and A form some ofthe more recent solutions for migraine sufferers.

Interestingly, migraines can be genetic. I have a very good friend who has kept track ofher medical history and found that on her maternal side, migraines runrampant. She has also found that one of her triggers to such pain isbologna--the food. I have witnessed her using ice packs, darkened rooms,medications--anything to stop the excrutiating pain which sometimes goes onfor days. I must admit though, I have also noticed her using her migrainesas a way to defer from work or any unwanted activity. Leading me tobelieve, as mentioned in the book, migraines can almost be emotionallycontagious.

I liked the way this book is arranged and can be used oftenby sufferers or those around migraine patients. It is helpful and fairlycomplete. There are some newer meds on the pharmacutical market now. But,all in all a good additon to medical collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Manuscript for Migraine Consult
Overall, this book effectively provides information about migraine as if the author and the reader are in a consult session. The book is organized into simple question and answer format and the answers are in details with very understandable language. The book is especially helpful for those who want to get background information beforehand of a consult with an expert.

As a frequent headache sufferer myself, I found this book very helpful and interesting. Dr. Fontebasso, the author of the book herself is a general physician whose expertise lies in migraine and headache, and she manages to directly answer many possible questions which could be raised by migraine or headache sufferers. This book is easy to read and understand with the overall amicable tone from the author. The author tries to connect to its readers as if the reading is a consult with a physician and guides the reader to the next level of consult as the reading continues. The explanations are in much details and many figures assist in understanding of complex scientific information since not many of the readers would have scientific backgrounds. Some of the information is constantly repeated and I believe that it is because the author wants to emphasize the fact as if she is talking to her real patient.

The book is organized into 16 chapters. The information tend to flow from a chapter to next, however I would divide the whole context into four parts. In the first section, the author provides introductory information about migraine and headaches. From the basic definition of migraine to ways discern other conditions from migraine. After reading the first six chapters, one should have a good idea of whether certain condition is a migraine or not. The author successfully "nags" the readers what to look for before jumping into a conclusion and diagnosing her/himself.In the second part of the book, the author suggests some treatment options. Interestingly, the author provides many alternative therapies outside of conventional medicine such as acupuncture and homeopathy, despite the fact that she is a physician herself. She tries to offer objective views on such options for the readers. The author not only covers information on the acute treatments but also some of preventative treatment to stop the symptoms from occurring in the future. In the third section, migraines in specific population like children and women. From the diagnosis to why and how they are special and different from others are answered in this section. Finally, in the last section includes the appendices. The appendix actually is very helpful, providing glossary and index to help the readers navigate for information more effectively.

The author chose a very simple Q&A format for the book. All of the chapters are organized into a format a brief background information is given and the rest of the details are covered under specific questions which can be raised by real life patients. Then the answers are provided in friendly tone for in a straightforward manner. Many answers start off with YES or NO and supplemented with detailed explanations. Acquiring information is extremely easy and the series of questions naturally takes you to answer what you may have in mind next. I found the information flow very well that the rich experience of the author with real patients shines in these aspects.

There is one chapter which seems to be a bit off-track from the rest of the book. It is chapter 10 and it talks about what the doctors and nurses need to know about migraine. One might find it somewhat odd that author included this section, but she explains in her introduction that by doing this she can allow the readers to understand what health care professionals looking for therefore understanding which aspect of their condition is important to consider. Also this is to benefit health care professionals to empathize with headache sufferers more effectively. This section is formatted also in Q&A style. The questions are addressed as if the physicians are asking their patients. Then the author provides explanations of why the physicians do/should ask such questions.I found this section very interesting since I had wondered about some of these questions which seemed irrelevant to my situation before reading this book.

In addition, I found the appendices very beneficial. The appendices include glossary, index and list of headache related institutions. I thought it was very considerable of the author to include such information to make the readers' life easier. It provides contact information on organizations for various types of treatment options, and related institutions of any covered topics. However, unfortunately for those outside of UK, the author is from UK and the organizations provided are only the ones located in UK.

In introduction, she writes, "You need to understand what your headache is, know the best way to treat it, be involved in all areas of decision-making and, above all, take control so that you can feel in control and finally be in control." The book takes you through this process. It helps you to get an idea of what you are dealing with and possible treatment options you have. The author also engages with the readers and gives caring advices.

After finishing reading this book, I felt as if I had gone through a consult session with my physician. The author did not neglect to include some interesting facts to help its readers to keep interest in the book. So, even though the book contains a lot of information, following through was easy and smooth. She also emphasizes and recommends to get help from experts after reading the book to resolve their problems.

I highly recommend this book for those who are seeking information on suspected migraine symptoms. Especially before consulting a doctor, it will help them to know what to ask and expect from the consult. Also after a session, one can dwell on the information about migraine. The book is very effective in answering specific questions because it provides glossary and index with simple Q & A format. For those who need quick look-up for their specific questions about migraine at times, you will find this book very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful source of help for migraine sufferers.
My daughter and sister both suffer terribly from migraines. They were both instructed by their doctors to write down everything about their migraines in order to find the migraine triggers. That's no easy task. With the help of this wonderful journal/planner, my daughter has actually been able to track everything concerning her migraines, including their onset, duration, her diet, environmental factors, etc. She's identified two new migraine triggers and since the latest studies show that preventative medicines won't work unless you identify your triggers, this is significant progress so we're hopeful that this will lead to better treatment results. My daughter is already improving and having less frequent migraines since she identified the first trigger. It's a beautiful book and since it serves as a daily planner, it's very convenient to use. This journal/planner is great and worth every red cent. I highly recommend this to anyone who suffers from migraine headaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and So Useful!
I just bought this gorgeous journal/planner for my daughter and it is absolutely beautiful! More important it is such a wonderful tool for the migraine patient. Now my daughter can keep track of all of the important information that she has been asked to track by her physician. Her physician thinks the planner is ideal for migraine patients because having a daily planner that also allows the migraine patient to document their symptoms, headaches, auras, what they were doing, eating, etc. is so convenient. He agreed with the author that documenting this information is critical to forming a correct diagnosis, preventing headaches and to prescribing the most beneficial medication to the migraine patient. Her physician told us that he is going to purchase one to show patients and recommend that they go out and purchase one. He was just as impressed with this journal/planner as we were! ... Read more

Product Description
Migraine is a painful neurological condition, of which the most common symptom is an intense and disabling episodic headache. Migraine headaches are usually characterised by severe pain on one or both sides of the head. Absent serious head injuries, stroke, and tumours, the recurring severity of the pain indicates a vascular headache rather than a tension headache.Migraines are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea. Migraine is three times more common in women than in men. Some individuals can predict the onset of a migraine because it is preceded by an 'aura', visual disturbances that appear as flashing lights, zig-zag lines or a temporary loss of vision. People with migraine tend to have recurring attacks triggered by a lack of food or sleep, exposure to light, or hormonal irregularities (only in women). Anxiety, stress, or relaxation after stress can also be triggers. ... Read more
