1-0 out of 5 stars poor delivery
I was very disappointed with the delivery of this book. I ordered the book from one site through Amazon, and they canceled my order a week later FOR NO REASON. I then ordered it from another site through Amazon and while it was within the stated delivery time, it was at the very end of the raneg of dates given. As if the person didn't care about their customer. I will be careful ordering through the sites other than Amazon from now on.

A complete patient guide for borderline personality disorder. Few psychological problems carry the negative connotation accompanying borderline personality disorder (BPD). The most common element of BPD is an exquisite sensitivity to life events that may manifest in periodic loss of control. This loss of control may lead to actions that can be damaging to oneself and others. The authors have written this volume to help people with BPD take control of this disorder. Filled with practical strategies and the research and theory behind them, this book provides patients with the necessary tools for working with this innovative program. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource
This workbook is a great resource because it requires the borderline reader to internally work through the various issues associated with borderline personality disorder. The workbook addresses all of the main borderline characteristics used to define a borderline patient. However, if you have already spent a lot of time in therapy, as I have, it will not tell you anything you haven't already learned. At the same time, if your insurance won't cover the visits to therapists, etc., this is an EXCELLENT resource because it addresses all the things we addressed in group therapy.

1-0 out of 5 stars no self-help book
However much this book might appeal to you, the schedules in the book are not to be done on one's own, which i found quite frustrating. the book reminds me of 'how to reinvent your life' byYoung. Anyway if you want a self-help book, for as much as bpd can be self-managed, i suggest "the angry heart".

1-0 out of 5 stars Totally disappointing.
The authors divide this workbook into chapters relating to each specific DSM diagnostic criterion for BPD. This is commendable and initially appealing and inviting. However, upon further examination, there is no substance to the preparatory reading material in any of the chapters. There is nothing unique in this workbook relating to specific issues of BPD. The very few cognitive distortions that are explained and dealt with are nothing that can't already be found in any of the available workbooks that deal with general issues of depression and anxiety. Moreover, my biggest contention with this volume is that the worksheets in each chapter are EXACTLY identical! There is absolutely no spontenaity or creativity on the part of the authors. Borderlines, who are especially prone to becoming bored easily, would find this workbook uninteresting, cumbersome, and tedious to work with. ... Read more

Product Description
We know that the likelihood of developing many physical diseases, such as diabetes, is determined by genes. But can abnormalities in specific genes also play a part in the development of mental disorders? And, if so, can these genes actually be identified and their discovery put to use in prevention and treatment?

In Mood Genes, leading psychiatrist and biological researcher Samuel Barondes answers these questions in a way that renders a complex subject both exciting and understandable.Focusing on manic depressive illness, which affects about one percent of the population and has long been known to run in families, Barondes describes the fascinating hunt for genes--called mood genes--that influence the inherited vulnerability to severe mood disorders. He builds the compelling story of this hunt on the histories of two families riddled with manic-depression, explaining what it means to have an inherited predisposition to a severe mood disorder, how to find the mood genes that are responsible, and what will happen as mood genes are found.

Not long ago, saying that a behavioral tendency was genetic was generally taken to mean that it was unchangeable. Now we know that finding genes that influence particular behavioral variations may not just be used to foretell our destinies--but also to forestall them.Amazon.com Review
It's official. Our tendencies to be happy or sad come in partfrom our genes. Samuel H. Barondes is a neurobiologist andpsychiatrist at the University of California, San Francisco, and hisdirect involvement with the subject lends friendly authority to thebook. Examining manic depression as a case study, Barondes shows howthis strange condition--thought to have been instrumental in the upsand downs of Dickens, van Gogh, and Newton, among others--isdefinitely heritable. Although the specific gene or genes associatedwith the disorder haven't been identified, Barondes's account of thesearch is fascinating. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very interesting book
I am a graduate student studying neurobiology who is very intersted in human behavioral genetics for my postdoc training, especially neuropsychiatric disoders (schizophrenia, bipolar disoder, major depression, and etc). Recent molecular genetics techniques start finding many promising susceptible genes for many diseases of complex genetic traits. The book does not have a lot of sophiscated intellectual content that some might want from it, but if you read it, you will get some idea about how human genetists apporach and what's going on in this research field in part without looking for original scientific articles.

Actually, one of the people who were mentioned in the book, Dr. Nelson Freimer (neuropsychiatric institute in UCLA, he moved from Standford where He had worked with the author) is one who narrowed down to the 331kb region via human linkage analysis of bipolar mood disorder in the Costa Rican population (PNAS 2001 98(20):11485-90).

Just FYI, one gene (mutation or polymorphism, whichever you name it) has been recently reported (by Whitehead/MIT genome research SNP group) to be involved in bipolar disorder via association study (Val66Met of Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factor; Mol. Psychiatry 7 : 579-593, 2002) and NIMH group just published a functional MRI paper examining the difference in the brain activity of people who do have BDNF gene of either Val66 or Met66 (Cell 112(2):257-69, 2003).
Since about 14 chromosomal loci have been reported to be linked to bipolar disorders, I have no doubt that more fascinating data will show up in near future.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another piece of eugenic fantasy
Despite the fact that no gene has ever been identified as a cause of Bipolar Disorder (or any other mental illness), the myth continues that this is a genetic disorder. Instead, you get a series of poorly designed gene linkage studies that are never successfully repeated, although printed as fact in large national newpapers after newsconferences by overexuberant, tenure-seeking scientists.Show me the money (or the gene)! The idea that we are genetic robots is a myth created by scientists who want to believe that human nature, including great art can be reduced to genes. The notion is absurd and, in my opinion, dangerous.I don't have to go too far back in history to support my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanksgiving day- cover to cover.Outstanding
Absolutely one of the most fascinating books I've ever read.Entirely honest.Very even-handed about the history and current state of affairs in this field.I come from a family riddled with some sort of mentaldilemma(probably manic-depressive) including most recently two adolescentsons. All have been remarkably successful, but devilish all the way.Ihold out hope for my sons, but see little progress while they wear myselfand ex-wife to a frazzle. What a vast wealth of knowledge Dr. Barondesshares with us.I read this book cover to cover on Thanksgiving Day.Irecommend it to anyone, whether your family has mental illness or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars In one word: Brilliant
Although many science books are well readable, there are few that youcannot put down; this however is one of them. In very clear language it isexplained what it means when mania or depression runs in your family.Besides that it isexciting to read about scientists that are searchingfor the origins of these diseases. This is a must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and engrossing to read!Terrific book.
Best and most delightfully clear presentation of genetics and thepotential for understanding our moods that I've ever read. If I taught acollege course in Psychology, I would start by having my students read thisengaging book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very concise...wonderful!
I have read other books on Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), but I think that this is the best one yet!

Some mainstream books on this disorder are too technical to be understood by the lay person. Even though I am a mental health professional, the book was really concise and also quite entertaining! This book is also a good reference guide, and provides a wonderful summary for people who are new to learning about this disorder.

So, if you think you have BPD or know someone who has it, I highly recommend this book. Worth every penny! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read, a bit repetitive.
Wonderful read and reference guide for nutri-ceuticals! Eye opening book based on hard evidence that deficiency in vitamins and supplements can influence mood.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
This is the first book I've read in a long time with advice that's easy to apply to real life. Although people need medication at times, I like his drug free approach to healing mood disorders. His works have helped me live healthier and gain insights for my blog at [...].

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life!
This is one of the most informative books regarding food and mood and how they are intertwined. There is also an extensive section on supplements and how some of them can be used to treated illnesses such as depression, anxiety, OCD, etc. I recommend this book to anyone suffering from a mental illness and would like more insight or health professionals out there that would like more information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bibliotherapy
Full disclosure here:I'm a holistic doctor, so I'm biased towards natural interventions for mood disorders, and this is stuff that I talk to patients about on an almost daily basis. But I've seldom seen natural therapies for psychological conditions presented in such a balanced, clear, scientific fashion.

I sometimes blanch at the outlandish claims made by some health books that deal with mental conditions. I think they cruelly mislead patients to believe that there's a vitamin or a supplement for every psychiatric complaint. Reinforcing denial is not good for patients at risk to themselves and others. But Jack Challem is versed in the latest science, and never strays far from the evidence in making his case for natural approaches.

There's clearly a place for drugs in the treatment of mental disorders, but I wish books like this got wider circulation because we could relieve untold suffering with a few basic suggestions herein.Studies have actually shown that good self-help books cure sufferers of mild to moderate depression at a rate comparable to that of Zoloft, Paxil and other commonly used drugs. They've even coined a term for it: "Bibliotherapy"!

So take this book and call your shrink in the morning--it may really not be so far-fetched!I think I'll start stocking it in my dispensary to give to my patients.

Ronald L. Hoffman, MD, New York City

5-0 out of 5 stars It makes sense -- and it works!
Jack Challem seems to have written this book just for me. I was so tired of seeing doctors who merely prescribed multi-bad-effects medications and who each told me a different cause of my problems. I had to became very proactive to save my own health.

I was always exhausted, in body and spirit. I felt like I was in a constant brain fog, getting early Alzheimer's! I awakened more tired than when I went to bed, longing to take naps, no needing them. I have had fibromyalgia for 15 years and am taking medications for this, taking two medications which help tremendously but cause side effects. I have hypertension, am an adult with ADD.Like most people I am stressed, anxious, impatient, lack focus, taking care of an elderly parent......sound familiar? But I am an early retired teacher who loved her job and should be more relaxed and healthy. I want and need my active life-style back. I'm not "that old"!!

Well, I was literally sick from taking meds, so I picked up Mr. Challem's book just by chance and found I COULD help myself, was doing so many wrong nutritional things, made some of his easy, suggested changes and, to my disbelief, found great relief within two weeks! I have always taken supplements and watched my health - so I thought - but still felt bad most of the time. And only the suggestions made in this book have helped me feel so much better. This author makes sense.

In the easiest reading and well organized presentation, Mr. Challem specifically presents HOW food affects mood and four steps to change. He discusses real, every day problems: how to realistically reduce our levels of stress and anxiety, how to handle our irritability, how to have more energy. And his suggestions, fully explained so even I would understand them, worked!

He goes on to take us step by step through a "recovery" process in which we can "fix" ourselves - armed with nutritional understanding and easy to do changes in our diet and life style. And best of all Mr. Challem clearly points out the specific connections between foods and moods and gives the reader things to DO and things to avoid....along with some of the best recipes I have ever tried.

While all his information is data based, I could easily understand the author and put his connections and suggestions to use immediately. And they have made a wonderfully positive change in my health, my entire life.
And he sells no supplements!

This book is a perfect gift for any friend or family member (underlining and notes will have you hold on to your own copy!) who has hypertension, fibromyalgia, ADD, exhaustion, depression, who is overweight or those irritating characteristics of impatience, irritsbility, stress, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, forgetfulness ---- characteristics we certainly notice in THEM but seldom admit about ourselves!

Buy this book for your own health and sanity --- and some to give as gifts to those you care about. These ideas make sense and work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This is an excellent book!It is clear and practical.I believe that anyone struggling with BDP or who interacts with someone with BPD will find this book very helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Info, Bad Advice
I found that this book was very good at explaining the more technical jargon and was excellent at moving through the various stages and facets of the disorder.

What gives me great pause was the dire finality in the chapters regarding the partner/husband/wife/friend of one suffering with BPD.It gives no advice as to how to implement any new strategies in understanding (which is what would be beneficial) of the BPD sufferer - it only gives ways to safely end a relationship and not allow violence.Yes, that is probably important to discuss, but it paints Borderlines as masochistic, manic individuals.

I felt that these chapters were "borderline" ridiculous....at best.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, disjunctive, disorganized
I thought this book in its attempt to be friendly rather than authoritative was dumbed down sometimes to the point of being an insult to the reader's intelligence. There is some science in it and some clinical discussion that is worth it, but it is quite disjunctive and not well organized, hopping around from topic to topic, and full of platitudes and obvious statements. What really is needed is a serious book for the serious reader, and this is not it. There is nothing in this book you can't find on the internet in various forms or other - the book as nothing of the insight into the condition that some more popularbooks have-- the whole first chapter is about how stress can induce episodes before we even know what the disease is, what causes it, etc - this is just sloppy - the whole book is sloppy. There have to be better books on the market than this, not recommended for the serious reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I read the original book and this is much better. It is very up-to-date in terms of therapies and medications.I especially liked the ideas about self-help.This book is written by professionals and a woman with bipolar disorder, so it gives a lot of perspectives.I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Book on Bipolar Disorder
"For many bipolar patients, the dark cloud of the illness is leavened by silver linings-creativity, intelligence, and drive. As a result, the bipolar spectrum is a more prevalent phenomenon among those in the public eye: artists, performers, writers, composers, and charismatic leaders."

Nancy Rosenfeld is a bipolar survivor who convinced Jan Fawcett (one of the world's leading authorities on depression and bipolar disorder) and Bernard Golden (a practicing psychologist for more than 30 years) to coauthor this book. Since more than 6 million people suffer from bipolar disorder/manic depression this is a much needed resource. This is the third book I've read on this disorder and this is by far the most comprehensive.

The book begins by profiling several famous people who have the disorder. Some of the main problems include mania, hypomania and depression. This book explains the differences between Schizoaffective Bipolar disorder, Bipolar I and Bipolar II disorder. This book also lists a number of medications like Lithium, Risperidone and Geodon that are helpful in treating the disorder.

"Despite all the research demonstrating that people with mental illness are actually less prone to violence than others, many people erroneously associate aggressive behavior with mental disorders." ~ pg. 153

The book becomes even more useful as you read about when medications should be taken and what to watch for in regards to side effects. A patient must at times choose between side effects and suicidal tendancies. In the long run it is better to deal with the side effects than to lose your life. If a pill causes drowsiness then it might be better taken at night. Often side effects can be treated by taking an additional medication.

The prevention of suicide is an essential chapter. It talks about the importance of staying on medication and gives a list of things you can do if you think someone may be suicidal. There is also a Stress Questionnaire to establish your level of stress. The authors explain why you should develop an adequate support system and also give a list of books to read for further information.

I can highly recommend this to families who are dealing with bipolar disorder, to doctors who must address the many needs of their patients and to those suffering with bipolar disorder.

"For many people with bipolar disorder, the turning point in their life comes when they understand their situation, accept responsibility for their actions, and are willing to work hard to change their lives." ~ pg. 218

With so many people suffering from this disorder it is very likely that you will meet someone in your life with this issue. In order to understand what it is like to be bipolar this book is essential. If you are suffering with bipolar disorder then there is not a minute to lose and this book will give you hope that you can be treated effectively. Since many doctors don't have the time for detailed explanations this can also be used as a companion to your present treatment. For doctors I can recommend Treatment of Bipolar Illness: A Casebook for Clinicians and Patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars All that and a bag of chips
The book does exactly what it claims, it provides new hope in the form of practical and useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars best bipolar book on sheveles
This is by far one of the most informative books on Bipolar Disorder. It's straight and to the point with tib bids of information for the family too.I highly recommend it to those who are seeking as much information as you can get and use it as a tool to educate your love ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different perspective
This book takes a different perspective on bipolar disorder. The book, while it has clinical elements, is not so cut and dried as many other books are on bipolar disorder. There is more discussion of the human impact of bipolar disorder, both on the patient and on their families and friends.I wish there were more books that really got into how this disease affects the people around the patient; most of them tend to concentrate on the patient, which is important, but bipolar disorder has an enormous impact on the families, friends and communities in which the patient lives.I really wish that the medical community would take that more into account and provide treatment plans that can involve the family and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pearl
I am bipolar & highly recommend this book. It's one of the few that actually offer some hope. While reading the reviews, I've noticed most of the 4-5 star reviews are by people such as myself, who are also bipolar. Others who give it low ratings seem to use anonymous names & refer to the bipolar co-author as "loopy" and "illogical." These terms strike me as common, but ignorant, stereotypes. The pharmaceutical companies are obviously going to be unhappy with this book.
This is one of the few books I won't give away. However, I will buy it for friends & give it as a gift.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overly Explanatory with Examples by an Annoying Patient Recounted Throughout
This book includes basic information on mood disorders, including major depression, mania, and hypomania, all components of what used to be called manic-depression and is now known as bipolar disorder.

I found other books more helpful as far as scientific knowledge and explication.I found Kay Redfield Jamison's books insightful, inspiring, as well as incredibly knowledgeable.I found this book annoying, and it relied too heavily on the double whammy of an explanation or point made by one of the medical authors with a lay person follow-up by Nancy, a patient with bipolar disorder whose experiences and anecdotes are leaned on heavily throughout the book. In trying to warm up what they perhaps feared might be an overly objective, medical reference book, which it is far, far from being anyway, the authors used Nancy as a device to humanize the condition.

I got very tired of Nancy and her loopy examples. When not preening over the authors' attention as the pet subject of the book, she was just illogical and somewhat strident or annoying. She had a very definite "voice," which to me was loud and probably possessing a strong New York accent.I feel for Nancy and her experiences with this disorder, but her examples had no resonance for me and detracted from any actual information.

Go for Jamison definitely and browse through some other newer sources.Skip this one. ... Read more

Product Description
Psychiatrists and other mental health care and medical professionals can now turn to a truly authoritative, up-to-date reference for current information about mood disorders. The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Mood Disorders—including a wealth of illustrations, tables and references—presents the state of the art in diagnosis, psychobiology, pharmacotherapy, and psychotherapy across the vast spectrum of mood disorders:

Symptomatology and Epidemiology:

  • Historical aspects and social underpinnings of mood disorders.
  • Classification and rating scales.
  • Global burden (the high costs of depression and bipolar disorder).

Pathogenesis:

  • Neurochemistry and psychoneuroendocrinology.
  • Cognitive processing models (experimental cognitive research).
  • Evolutionary explanations (the normal role of low mood in disengaging individuals from goals they cannot reach).

Methods of Investigation:

  • Anatomical pathology (strengths and limitations of human postmortem studies).
  • Molecular and cellular neurobiology of severe mood disorders (abnormalities in the regulation of signaling).
  • Genetics of bipolar and unipolar disorders.

Types of Mood Disorder:

  • Psychotic depression (distinct from nonpsychotic depression in presenting features, biology, familial transmission, course, and response to treatment).
  • Seasonal affective disorder (use of light therapy in SADS and also in other depression).
  • Secondary depression with medical illness (calling for large-scale studies to gauge treatment efficacy).
  • Major depression seen in primary care (as prevalent as hypertension).
  • Substance abuse (a long-standing source of controversy).
  • Sleep disorders (risk factors for the new onset of depression).

Treatments:

  • Pharmacotherapy (including tricyclics and tetracyclics, MAOIs, SSRIs and newer antidepressants, lithium and other mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, hormonal interventions, and augmentation strategies).
  • Brain stimulation techniques (such as ECT, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and vagus nerve and deep brain stimulation).
  • Psychotherapies (cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and psychoanalytic/psychodynamic).

Pertinent Factors:

  • Personality (the need for further study of the degree and the etiologic nature of relationships between specific traits or disorders and major depression).
  • Culture (suggesting a model of cultural consultation using multilingual, multicultural clinicians and culture brokers to supplement routine care).
  • Gender (women being about twice as likely as men to have mood disorders)
  • Age (pediatric and geriatric depression and suicidality).

Offering a fascinating synthesis of the multifaceted field of mood disorders, the richly informative American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Mood Disorders will prove invaluable for psychiatric and medical practitioners, educators, students, and residents interested in the latest breakthroughs in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of mood disorders. ... Product Description
People with mood disorders often have simultaneous problems with addiction, and those with substance abuse problems are especially susceptible to mood disorder. Thetreatment of such patients can be particularly complicated, and many receive treatment for onlyone of their disorders.

In this book, fourteen clinicians discuss the extent of the problem, methods of assessment, typicalcourses, and treatments--including both psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. They address theall-too-frequent necessity of proceeding with treatment before a clear diagnosis is known, andthey claim that distinguishing between primary and secondary disorders is initially less criticalthan previously assumed. Contending that clinicians treating comorbid mood / substanceproblems must be both more flexible and more watchful than those treating either disorder alone, the authors also describe various models of care. Throughout the book, they provide differingpoints of view on such issues as the value of pharmacotherapy for those still abusingpsychoactive substances. Written for those who treat addictions, including counselors, clergy, and employee assistance staff, as well as for traditional mental health professionals,Integrating Treatment for Mood and Substance Use Disorders is an invaluable referencefor any clinician who works with dually diagnosed clients. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative.
Very informative and easy to read. Must have reading for anyone living with someone that has bipolar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and essential book
Compared to the many books I have read on depression and bipolar disorder, this is the best and more helpful.

2-0 out of 5 stars lots of medical studies
This book sites many many medical studies and doctors, but provides little real help in helping you get better if you have bipolar disorder.Lots and lots of medical studies!I read the whole book and took about 1.5 8 1/2 x 11" pages ofnotes.I didn't get that much out of this book at all.The best part of the book starts on page 345 at the back of the book.It lists lots of websites which can help you and family members with bipolar disorder.I think you would be much better off running a search on Google for bipolar disorder and checking at you local public library if you really want to read this book.I would check into other books first.I give this book about a two out five.Lots and lots of clinical data that means little to the patient.

2-0 out of 5 stars Over the top
The book has some good information in the first part, that provides useful insights into the problems faced by bipolar people.Beyond the first part I found the book to be lacking of much useful information. Some parts of the book seems more like a rag written by big pharma.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better then I thought
This is actually better then i thought originally i was going to return it thinking ok whatever this is just this dude's opinion and im not learning anything new. But flipping through it I was able to find stories of others that have shared similar experiences to myself and this guy has picked out some key info from various reference books on the subject. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars C'mon Dad I'm Not Making This Stuff Up!
My father is 87 year old, old school thinker. A pick yourself up by your bootstraps person, a self made millionaire.

Until I was disabled by BiPolar I was an EXTREMELY successful person in my Dad's eyes.I believe I was hypomanic for years. And there is nothing like a hypomanic employee to make a company happy.I went from a switchboard operator to a senior manager for a major automobile finance company in about 10 years.I was one level from becoming an executive when I became disabled.I was well compensated for my daily work which of course made my father extremely proud. So what that twice I had to come up with $100,000 to pay down my debts.Merely nuisances, right?

I became permanently disabled in 1988 with a deep depressive episode. I was hospitalized several times, needed ECT treatment, the whole gammit. It's hard to remember but I think I was in this black mood for several years.

I have said that to say this, now that I'm on disability with BiPolar, my father believes I'm a "loser".I have gained a significant amount of weight, I am a rapid cycler, don't make much money now, am drug resistant and see too many doctors.

This book was is well put together and put in understandable words for someone who has never heard of 'rapid cycler', BiPolar I and II.I have been able to highlight areas that directly talk about my condition.

He may never understand, but now I have given him a tool to read. Please pray that he will get a better understanding. ... Read more
