Product Description
Use of the term "multiple chemical sensitivity" (MCS) as a diagnostic label has generated increasing controversy during the past few decades as a phenomenon related to exposure to chemical agents sustained both in indoor and outdoor environments. This volume, prepared in conjunction with "Biologic Markers in Immunotoxicology", contains the authored papers of a workshop held to develop an agenda to study the phenomenon of multiple chemical sensitivity. Authored by clinicians, immunologists, toxicologists, epidemiologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and others involved in research or clinical activities relevant to the problem, the papers contain case evaluations and criteria for diagnosis, mechanisms potentially underlying MCS, and epidemiologic approaches to investigation. ... From the supplier: Multiple chemical sensitivity remains a challenging area of the law and is not universally defined or even accepted as a medical condition. Courts have taken many positions, depending in part on whether a claim is based on the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Housing Amendment Act, the Rehabilitation Act, state workers' compensation, or negligence or product liability laws. A client's sensitivity can also make practical aspects of litigation, such as document review and depositions, more difficult.

From the supplier: The question of whether multiple chemical sensitivity is a real physiological disorder or is merely a symptom of modern-day psychosis is explored. Some doctors, however, believe that the yet-unexplained condition, also known as environmental illness, has physical basis and is not a psychological ailment.

Description:
Purpose: To validate and extend the US case definition for the Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome (MCS) from 1999 by a systematic literature-review. Data source: MEDLINE-research from 1997 to August 2003, research in the Cochrane-Library in August 2003, earlier reviews since 1997. Study selection: Headings and abstracts were screened by one reviewer. All references dealing with multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) which covered topics of interest such as symptom-profiles, differential diagnostic procedures, etc. were included in the analysis. Data extraction and synthesis: Topic-specific data extraction and synthesis was done by one reviewer. Data interpretation was discussed by all other authors. Results: Out of 1429 references 36 publications proved to be suitable for the review . The results can be summarized as follows: exposure-related symptoms associated with self-reported multiple chemical sensitivities can be divided into non-specific complaints of the central nervous system - CNS (main characteristics) and functional disturbances in other organ systems (optional complaints). There is a significant overlap of MCS, CFS and fibromyalgie. At present no standards for a diagnostic procedure based on the criteria outlined above are existing Conclusions: MCS should only be diagnosed in patients who are mainly suffering from exposure-related non-specific complaints of the Central nervous system. The suggested diagnostic procedure follows the guidelines for CFS which are extended by diagnostic clarification of functional disturbances in other organ systems. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely Useless
If you're looking for information about MCS do not buy this "medical guide'. Of the meager 50 pages only 25 have any information at all, the rest is bibliography and a Document license (as if you'd actually want to use any of it). Oh, and the font size is appropriate for a 1st grader. The entire content could fit on one sheet of printer paper.

There is not one small bit of useful information and they often quote outdated information. ... Read more

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Gluten Sensitivity, Food Intolerance, Oat Sensitivity, Elimination Diet, Latex Allergy, Salicylate Sensitivity. Excerpt:An elimination diet is a method of identifying foods that an individual cannot consume without adverse effects . Adverse effects may be due to food allergy , food intolerance , other physiological mechanisms(such as metabolic or toxins), or a combination of these. When the mechanism is unknown, but a food is suspected, the mechanism may be described as a food sensitivity or a food hypersensitivity . Elimination diets typically involve entirely removing a suspected food from the diet for a period of time from two weeks to two months, and seeing whether symptoms resolve during that time. In extreme cases, an oligoantigenic diet may be tested. Common reasons for undertaking an elimination diet include suspected food allergies and suspected food intolerances . An elimination diet might remove one or more common foods, such as eggs or milk , or it might remove one or more minor or non-nutritive substances, such as artificial food colorings . An elimination diet relies on trial and error to identify specific allergies and intolerances. Typically, if symptoms resolve after the removal of a food from the diet, then the food is reintroduced to see whether the symptoms reappear. This challenge-dechallenge-rechallenge approach is particularly useful in cases with intermittent or vague symptoms. The terms exclusion diet and elimination diet are often used interchangeably in the literature, and there is no standardised terminology. The exclusion diet can be a diagnostic tool or method used temporarily to determine whether a patient s symptoms are food-related. The term elimination diet is also used to describe a "treatment diet", which elimi... ... Read more
