Product Description
Medically unexplained illnesses are among the most common disorders in primary medical care today. Accordingly, there has been a recent surge of interest in the physiology of such illnesses as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, and multiple chemical sensitivity. But biomedical models can only go so far toward understanding a group of painful and often frustrating symptoms. Author Susan K. Johnson surveys the most recent research on how psychological, social, and physiological factors may interact and contribute to the development of symptoms. This volume will appeal to both psychologists and health care professionals interested in more fully understanding the interaction between mind and body in medically unexplained illness. ... From the supplier: Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) fails to meet scientific standards required of expert evidence as set by Daubert v. Merrell Down Pharmaceuticals, Inc, causing judges to exclude it from toxic tort cases. Those supporting MCS call themselves environmental physicians or clinical ecologists and are not recognized by the rest of the medical community.

Description:
Objectives: Environmental clinics are frequented by patients with fears and complaints related to environmental triggers. A dose-independent overreaction to small doses of widely used and generally non-toxic chemicals is referred to as multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), but no clearly defined clinical syndrome with objective physical findings has been delineated so far. We aimed to obtain information about symptoms, supposed environmental triggers, the frequency of self-reported chemical sensitivity, and of the diagnosis MCS in Germany. Methods: We conducted a representative survey among 2032 adult Germans. Results: We found self-reported chemical sensitivity in 9% and physician-diagnosed MCS in 0.5% of our representative sample. Physical complaints were common in the whole study population and in chemically sensitive individuals, but there was no clear-cut symptom constellation among the latter. The most common complaints were headache, fatigue, sleep disturbances, joint pain, mood changes and nervousness. A subjective connection between complaints and environmental triggers was denied by 67% of the whole group and by 35% of the self-reported chemically sensitive. Factor analysis of environmental triggers suggested that a specific exposure situation rather than chemical similarity is the basis for individual trigger combinations. Conclusions: The prevalence of subjective sensitivity towards chemicals is similar to such rates reported from other countries. There is a relatively low awareness of the MCS-concept, and it appears to be diagnosed less frequently than, e.g., in the USA. Since symptoms and triggers in chemically sensitive individuals did not differ from the general population, our data do not suggest the existence of a widespread new syndrome related to chemical sensitivities in Germany. We outline the limitations of self-reported chemical sensitivity as the major criterion for such a contentious diagnosis as MCS. S. ... Read more

Product Description
Environmental illness: certain health professionals and clinical ecologists claim it impacts and inhibits 15 percent of the population. Its afflicted are led to believe environmental illness (EI) originates with food, chemicals, and other stimuli in their surroundings -as advocates call for drastic measures to remedy the situation. What if relief proves elusive-and the patient is sent on a course of ongoing, costly and ineffective "treatment"?Several hundred individuals who believed they were suffering from EI have been evaluated or treated by Herman Staudenmayer since the 1970s. Staudenmayer believed the symptoms harming his patients actually had psychophysiological origins-based more in fearof a hostile world than any suspected toxins contained in the environment.Staudenmayer's years of research, clinical work-and successful care-are now summarized in Environmental Illness: Myth & Reality. Dismissing much of the information that has attempted to defend EI and its culture of victimization, Staudenmayer details the alternative diagnoses and treatments that have helped patients recognize their true conditions-and finally overcome them, often after years of prolonged suffering. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Where is the truth in this book?
This book has all the makings of a person who has no concept of this illness.A man who hasn't the MEDICAL training to understand the systemic ramifications of toxic chemicals on the human system.

Mr. Staudenmayer isan independent consultant to the insurance industry and is using cigarettescience to make up for his lack of knowledge and current research on thisillness.More and more physicians are seeing that the human body is notable to process all the chemcials that they are in contact with in a normalday.

If these so called chemicals are safe, which he alludes to in hisbook, why is the government calling for MAJOR investigations on the safetyof over 2000 chemicals by the year 2004?

Mr. Staudenmayer needs to learnto do research not reiterate publications of an industry that sponsorshim.

I would NOT recommend this book to anyone, as the facts are nottrue, his alliance to the chemical industry precludes him from making anunbiased assessment of this illness.

1-0 out of 5 stars I Wish This Author Could Experience Environmental Illness.
This author wrote a book about something that he was determined to find does not exist except in the minds of those who are afflicted with it.He is right that there are a lot of charletans out there ready and willing totake your money but there is more to multiple chemical sensitivity than amental predisposition to it.This author is in the dark ages andunfortunately, it will be years before the truth comes out. There is muchmoney invested by the chemical, pesticide and building industries to keepthe general public ignorant of the problems with many products and theirconnection to multiple chemical sensitivity, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigueand asthma. If you are looking for a book that will help you with any ofthese conditions, this is not it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent synposis of current understanding of EI!
This book provides an authorative, well researched examination of the phenomena of environmental illness. It is a "must read" for anyone who has any interest in this area. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why David Hated Tuesdays: One Couragious Mother's Guide to Keeping Your Family Toxin and Allergy Free
I would recommend this book to every parent, especially parents of Austism, ADHD, and ADD children. It truly educates us on everyday items we use in our houses we are not aware of, that are not only toxic to our children but ourselves as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Story that makes you think, and offers solutions
I was really impressed with Amilya's book. I had heard the story of Ms. Antonetti on Oprah and in various publications like People and Time but never gave it much attention but after I read the book everything she is saying made real life sense. I never realized how the products in my home could kill me and I took it for grated that the products I always considered safe could actually be the cause of my allergies and so many other ailments. The best thing about the book is Ms. Antonetti doesn't just tell a sob story or simply tell us everything in our homes is bad, she actually spells out in detail practical solutions you can implement immediately to make your life safer. A great read!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wake Up Call About The Dangers of Painkillers!!
I have read several health books over the last 5 years trying to find an answer to my health problems that doctors told me didn't exist. I have tried so many different diets and numerous supplements and herbal remedies recommended by different websites and books only to get partial results in improving my health. Every book or website I read would say that all your problems come from a lack of this, or too much of that so I would follow their advice and tank up on whatever is they reccomended...all the while I was still doing the one thing that brought my illness on in the first place...taking painkillers! I wound up wasting close to five thousand dollars following the advice of others buying products that never did anything for me. I never completely found the definitive cause of my illness until I read this book and then it all began to make sense to me. I was able to finally put thepast 5 years into perspective and begin devising an approach to treament for myself.

My story began in Basic Training in the Army where I sprained my hip and pelvis during a night crawl. They doped me up with Ibuprofen 800's and sent me on my way. I was forced to run and march carrying the weight of an 8 pound rifle and 50 pound ruck sack on an injured hip, the only relief allowed was prescription drugs. Over time, I began to have violent reactions to the foods I was eating and my health went down hill from there. I developed insomnia, anxiety, panic attacks, malnourishment, etc, etc..the list goes on and on when you are dealing with Leaky Gut Syndrome. I never put two and two together that the pain meds were the source of my declining health. The Army personal told me it was stress that was causing my "upset tummy" and I was often told to walk it off and relax.

The treatments Gloria describes in her book do help because I have tried several of them myself. The key is listening to your body and finding foods and supplements that will not trigger the inflammation. Some of the products she recommends are Wheat Grass powder, distilled aloe vera juice, rice protein shakes with L-Glutamine to repair the damaged tissues, goat milk mineral whey and protein shakes, rebounding to clear the lymphatic system, Castor Oil packs on the skin, homeopathic tinctures to detox the liver, and of course digestive enzymes to assist the break down of heavy proteins. She also recommends things like colon hydrotherapy, skin brushing, sleep aids, vitamin C powder, vitamin D, oxygen therapy and anti-allergy medication to combat allergic reactions to foods and/or chemicals in the environment that are so common for people with damaged intestines. You really have to give Gloria credit for going out of her way to test all these various treatments on herself before recommending them to the public, because like myself, she is one person who was told there was no hope and refused to give up on herself.

She also offers a list of foods and drinks known to trigger inflammation and allergic responses such as citrus fruits, potato and tomato products and dairy. A food diary log is also provided to help narrow down specific foods that are causing symptoms.

I wish I had read this book 5 years ago because it would have saved me not only a ton of money in useless other books and products, but I would have stopped the pain meds way back then and saved myself a lot of shame and embarrassment of going from doctor to doctor for answers only to be told "you're crazy".

Moral of the story: Avoid NSAIDS at all costs!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

My 2nd thoughts about this book:

I noticed that in Gloria's book, she uses colon hydrotherapy quite often, I think every 3-6 weeks which is something that shouldn't have to continue for the rest of one's life as a treatment option. In her book, she left out a lot of information regarding yeast build up in the GI tract and getting rid of it, but instead relies on a miriade of pills and supplements to keep her "functional", which is something I do not advocate doing.

I just finished reading another book called - Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet which explains Leaky Gut Syndrome better than any other book that I have found so far. In it, the author talks in detail for several chapters about how the mucous builds up in the gut and once that is gone you can begin digesting and absorbing food once again. This would explain the results I get from the wheatgrass tablets which kill the mucus. It has made me wonder if this is why animals eat grass when their stomachs are upset. I would rather take grass tablets versus digestive aide supplements anyday.

I recommend using Pines International - Wheat Grass, 500 mg, 500 tablets rather than the powder form due to the taste and is extremely helpful in controlling Leaky Gut Symptoms.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone!
I was hoping to find some sensible suggestions for calming sinus inflammation associated with food intolerances.Unfortunately this author's approach to eliminating toxins from your system is more than I am willing to undertake. She advocates using chopsticks to examine your waste in order that you can make sure that you are effectively eliminating.I am not going to comb through my poop with chop sticks.I do not think that her advice is particularly practical for most folks.I regret having purchased this book and will take it to my local used bookseller asap.

5-0 out of 5 stars SO many people need this book and don't even know it...yet !
I have the older version and it helped me to heal and go on to become a nutritionist and help others. When I couldn't find anyone who knew what was happening to me, thankfully I found this book.I highly recommend it as well as "Invisible Illness" if you want to learn about what is happening to so many people who are still clueless.Allopathic doctors don't know these facts, they exacerbate the symptoms because they refuse to accept/learn the cause, mostly because it involves nutrition instead of pharmaceuticals - she will tell you everything you need to know !
Don't hesitate if you know something just is not right, you must educate yourself.I'd love to go into details, but just get the book, it's all in there !

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable addition
Gloria Gilbere is a doctor of traditional naturopathy and natural health, a homeopath, an Eco Ergonomist, and is especially known in alternative medicine for her approach to skin and body rejuvenation'. Therefore she brings a special expertise to "I Was Poisoned By My Body... I Have A Gut Feeling You Could Be, Too!". Now in a newly revised and substantially updated edition, this compendium of commentary, description, analysis and advice covers everything from food allergies, chronic fatigue, arthritis, autoimmune disorders, and heartburn, to acid reflux, liver dysfunction, muscle pains, migraines, colon disorders, anaphylaxis, candid, and gluten intolerance. Of special note is Gilbere's survey and discussion of environmental illnesses because she was able to reverse her own condition of fibromyalgia, leaky gut syndrome and multiple allergic responses with natural methods and has enjoyed her recovery for the past ten years now. Enhanced with the useful addition of resource listings for testing, products, colon hydro-therapy, 'Consulting with Gloria', education, drugs classified as benzodiazepines, as well as website information and support groups, "I Was Poisoned By My Body" also features an extensive bibliography and a comprehensive index. Informed and informative, thoroughly 'reader friendly', and an invaluable addition to the growing library of Alternative Medicine reference collections, "I Was Poisoned By My Body" is especially recommended reading for anyone suffering from environmentally influenced illnesses and allergies. ... Description:
Chronic fatigue syndrome and multiple chemical sensitivity are two clusters of illnesses that are pervaded by medical, social and political uncertainty. This article examines how facts are talked about and experienced in struggles over these emergent, contested illnesses in the US. Based principally on a large archive of internet newsgroup postings, and also on fieldwork and on published debates, it finds that (1) sufferers describe their experiences of being denied healthcare and legitimacy through bureaucratic categories of exclusion as dependent upon their lack of biological facts; (2) institutions manage these exclusions rhetorically through exploiting the open-endedness of science to deny efficacy to new facts; (3) collective patient action responds by archiving the systematic nature of these exclusions and developing counter-tactics. The result is the maintenance of these very expensive struggles for all involved. ... Read more

Product Description
One & the Same; Connecting Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Candidiasis & Immune System Dysfunction is a personal account of a 12-year "Fibromyalgia" sufferer. Something amazing happened to Teresa Eakman in the depths of her illness. After years of excruciating pain, unending fatigue and depression, a pregnancy beginning with twelve weeks of severe dehydration stagnated all symptoms.

Nearly a year later, just as symptioms slowly began to reappear, Teresa was given another clue into the potential cause and cure of "Fibromyalgia" as she began taking a supplement for Candida overgrowth, due to the countless yeast infection she'd incurred. Because the supplement seemed to help, she began to read more about the condition of Candidiasis.

Noticing the extensive overlap of syptoms and pre-existing conditions, she began researching modes of treatment for Candidiasis rather than traditional medicine's way of treating Fibromyalgia, which provided virtually no relief. Not surprisingly, treating the Candidiasis drastically improved the Fibromyalgia symptoms. Teresa managed to maintain a healthy level of existance from that point on, trying numerous methods of therapy, both traditional and non-traditional.

As a graduate student, Teresa was involved in a research project in which she prepared a presentation of empirical evidence concluding that Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Candidiasis and Immune dysfunction are indeed One & the Same.

This book tells Teresa's story, as well as others' personal journeys with affliction. It includes Teresa's research thesis in its entirety, and current modes of treatment, both traditional and non-traditional, stressing througth experience, which methods have worked best for her. ... Read more
