Product Description
Dr. Terry Wahls links micronutrient starvation to the epidemics of chronic disease that are overtaking modern society. She explains the key roles mitochondria play in maintaining a healthy brain and body.Americans are eating so poorly, something we all know to be true, that the majority of Americans are missing key building blocks that are needed for brain cells to be healthy. The result is an epidemic of depression, aggression, multiple sclerosis and early dementia. She then teaches you how to eat for healthy mitochondria, a healthy brain and a healthy body in language that is clear and concise, even for those without a science background. In this book, Dr. Wahls explains basic brain biology in simple terms. She tells us what vitamin, mineral and essential fat building blocks are needed by the mitochondria and other key structures in the brain. Then she explains what foods are good sources for those key nutrients.Over a hundred recipes are provided to help get you started on this new way of eating. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be used to fund research into the benefits of these interventions in others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand, useful recipes
I've enjoyed reading this book - it is easy to understand and has many useful recipes.Even though I don't have MS and am basically a healthy person physically, I suffer from depression and fatigue. This book has given me great ideas of how to "cure" my depression instead of just taking pills that cover up the symptoms. When I follow the suggestions and recipes in this book I feel great, sleep better, have more energy and a better outlook. I am able to spend time with my 6 year old son and enjoy our time together instead of feeling agitated.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Must Have Manual on Nutrition
It took a desperate physician; a university professor with rapidly progressing MS, to dig through hundreds of journal articles and piece together all of this nutritional information into one very readable and instructive manual. If you find yourself reading articles on organic vs conventionally grown vegetables, free-range vs grain-fed beef, or if you're just a person who takes vitamins, this book has illustrations that will allow you to see what's going on in your cells as a result of what you put in your mouth.Terry Wahl is a 5-star doctor!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for everyone to read...healthy or not!
Being a person with m.s, I have understood the effect that food has had on my well being. Dr. Wahls explains the science behind eating right, how to determine what is and what is not a good food choice, the alternatives you can choose from and even recipes that can get you going. She also stresses the importance of exercise and why that is so important. So, all in all, She gives us the how and the why of how we should be living our lives..and as a bonus some tips on suppliments too! Recomended to anyone interested in getting healthy or how to heal!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition 101 from science to your table!
Don't let the title scare you away from this book.Inside is a scientific look at nutrition, and also practical ways to apply that science to create daily eating habits that will improve your health.I have fibromyalgia and I find that avoiding dairy and gluten makes me feel better.I buy organic if possible, non processed foods. Kelp, mushrooms, seaweed, onions, soy milk are just a few foods I purchase every week.Since doing this I feel better- less pain, brain fog and increased energy and weight loss.
Not only being a guide for food choices his book also talks about supplementation to foods as well, but the focus is on real foods first, and supplementation second.Follow Dr. Wahls plan and feel better, think clearer, and save money as you will be able to make wise decisions in the grocery store.
Thanks for sharing your story of recovery, as well as sharing your plan for regaining as well as maintaing a healthy body.

5-0 out of 5 stars The diet is great for Brain Injury also!
I have the good fortune to have Dr. Wahls as a physician in the Polytrauma Clinic at the local VA. She outlined the diet, and I chose to give it a try. It's not easy to stick to it--I fell away from my routine at Christmas. But I can tell the difference in my ability to think quickly and clearly when I follow the protocol as opposed to when I am eating the way I used to eat. For me, I am making a lifetime commitment to keeping the protocol going because the of the positive mental changes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
When my husband was diagnosed this year, I felt helpless in understanding what he was going through and what was to come of our future.Coming from a medical background, i felt that I understood the science of the disease, but didnt understand the disease from a personal angle.I felt the need to educate myself and my husband immediatly and researched books for both of us to read.I have to say that this book helped open my mind up to sooooo many things, it brought tears to my eyes at time, and i felt inspired and motivated by it.I felt that now I could understand what he was going through, and I would know how to help him whenever he needed something, whether or not he expressed it to me.This book is a must read for newly diagnosed, those who don't want to give into the disease, and for those that love something with the disease. It helps shed a light that makes you feel human, and motivated to continue your life with an open mind and with a smile

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource!
If you or somebody you know has MS this is the one book that will be of the most use.

5-0 out of 5 stars MS and Your Feelings
Excellent book which helped me greatly with some of my feelings. I am a nurse practitioner and thought I was going crazy for awhile. I have tried some of the suggestions she gives in the book and have been very successful. My therapist was also very impressed with the book

4-0 out of 5 stars A must have
MS and Your Feelings is a must for anyone dealing with the ravages of MS.Even if your MS is following a relatively benign course, the emotions associated with loss around a chronic disease, plus the loss of cognitive functions, memory, and emotional stability associated with the disease itself make this book timely and helpful.I've read it through twice already - first when first diagnosed, and again when my emotions were getting out of control.
Filled with good, sensible information and encouragement, it's a keeper, for frequent revisiting. If you buy one book about the emotional changes of MS, this should be the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars GOOD

I have found this book to be a great read. It is full of great information. If you are newly diagnosed and are having a hard time get this book. And if you can get your caregiver to read it even better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE
This is a great book! This book was filled with many valuable information. As a newly diagnosed patient, I found this book to be very informative!

4-0 out of 5 stars MS Self Help
Managing your own disease process is not a substitute for your doctor's care or advice, but it can help both you and him to improve the quality of that life. Medications can only go so far, and the rest is up to you. Know your own body, your symptoms, and what you can do about them. Knowledge is power.

1-0 out of 5 stars Old Information
This book was written before the new drugs for MS.The info in it is dated with some advice that could be harmful if using one of the new drugs such as rebif, avonex, etc.You do not want to rev up your immune system. It is already working overtime destroying your myelin.Try one of the newer books like MS - The First Year by Margaret Blackstone. Also, Teri Garrs book and Fall Down Laughing are good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Because Doctors Won't or Can't Tell You Everything
This highly readable, well-organized book covers the essential alternative approaches for those dealing with relapsing-remitting MS.It focuses on the best accepted research studies and wellness management (as opposed to symptom management). For example, there is a lot on diet, with great explanations of why it works, but nothing on bee venom therapy (which only temporarily can address symptoms). It's so well written, you can get the essence of the whole thing in a less than an hour, and then drill into the parts as appropriate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
I have had MS for eight years.I found this book extremely informative. The author discusses information that I have not found anywhere else.Herapproach to disease management through vitamin and mineral suppliments aswell as the importance of identifying food allergies has given me renewedhope.I highly recommend this book! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not in line with the MS diet
I thought this book would contain recipes that would work within the Swank/Mcdougall diet, but it does not. Most of the recipes contain dairy of some sort and legumes. I was very disappointed in the recipes that were offered. It seems that the only recipes in line with the diet were for baked fish or chicken which I already know how to make. I was hopeful for some substitutions that would satisfy the strictness of the diet, but I was sadly mistaken. Seems that the only option left is to run my own "test kitchen" to come up with substitutions myself. I'm a foodie and I have a better than average knowledge of cooking so it may be easier for me than others. Either way, don't waste your money on this cookbook as it is not in line at all with the suggested MS diets.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on MS I've gotten so far.
I have purchased many books on MS since I got diagnosed in February and this one is the best by far.Just hearing other women talking about just about everything I've experienced. It's like inviting some friends over to your home that have MS too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living Beyond Multiple Sclerosis
This book is excellent. It helped me tremendously. As I read I could relate to the things they were talking about. It has helped me track my symptoms of MS back around 15 years.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so much really
This book is all about women's personal experiences, mostly negative. The only part of the book that was about living BEYOND multiple schlerosis was the last chapter or two.Perhaps I'm just not in the right stage of MS to understand what was going on here.I skipped the chapters about housework and clothing.I can imagine talking to my best girlfiends about that (which the women in this support group were) but I didn't think it made very interesting copy.I also found the some of the in-group terms used, MonSter, froup, flutterbugs, a bit silly and off-putting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stories drawn from an on-line support group of women
Living Beyond Multiple Sclerosis is a collection of personal stories drawn from an on-line support group of women suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. This compendium of updated information on the sometimes elusive MS diagnosis; sustaining positive doctor/patient relationships; the newest MS treatments; maximizing treatment benefits; Social Security Disability and other insurance benefit applications, as well as household accessibility and tips for choosing and correctly using assistive devices presents Living Beyond Multiple Sclerosis as an invaluable informational resource that is informative, and occasionally inspiring. Judith Nichols and her online community of women have rendered a truly invaluable service, the results of which are highly recommended for personal, professional, medical center, and community library health reference collections and reading lists.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good info on MS, really not so much on Progressive....
Basic information on MS. I was disappointed that it didn't really cover more on Primary Progressive type of MS. Not a lot of info on that type of MS out anywhere. But the information in this book is good and I would suggest it for anyone looking for basic information on Multiple Sclerosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars These experts know their field
Please note: This review is for the second edition, which is called "Living with Progressive Multiple Sclerosis: Overcoming the Challenges."

Thanks to Patricia Coyle, MD and June Halper for their work on behalf of us who have multiple sclerosis and have progressed in our disease course past the point where we could hope that new or worsening symptoms would lessen or disappear. The word "challenges" only begins to describe daily life.

There have been so many changes in the fight against multiple sclerosis in the last few years, including advances in genetic research and in the treatment of symptoms; it is a good time to revise the information on the subject, especially as the medical world has realized that a "wellness approach" is the right approach. Now we need to know how that looks in real life.

This book is well organized and labeled and includes a glossary, an index, and a list of suggested further reading. It is straightforward--no cartoons here.It is not meant to entertain, but to be a complete source of information, and it meets that challenge well.I have no reservations about recommending this book for your MS reference library.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a 'must' reference for any living with MS.
Every person living with or caretaking those with Multiple Sclerosis and any public or health library catering to patrons with MS needs this handbook, which focuses on the specific, special challenges of MS and how to handle daily life with a progressive disease. Chapters discuss the physical and psychological challenges of managing MS symptoms and progression, offering a range of insights and tips on treatments and options throughout. It's a 'must' reference for any living with MS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Basics, nothing radical here
THis book by Paul O'Connor was terrific. It covers all of the basics and more.Easy to read and informative.I picked it up and finished it within a few hours and I am a slow reader. There is nothing radical or ridiculous in here unlike with some other books.Normal diet, beneficial medications, moderate exercise and life can be good with MS.Try to stay away from books like "The Multiple Sclerosis Diet Book".They are pretty radical in approach and could leave you depressed if you can't keep up with the insanely low, low fat diet.It was the first book I picked up after being diagnosed with MS and was depressed at the harse look at how to eat.Leave that book alone unless you are already on a low fat diet and can easily move to an even lower fat diet.If you ever thought of joining a cult then that book is for you.If not, buy MS, Everything you need to know and you will be much happier.Life is a journey, not a guided tour.

4-0 out of 5 stars good info
this is good... I was hoping for something i had not read yet and it didn't have anything that fit this... but everything in it is good information for someone with MS.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title- it's a pharmaphilic decoy
I was very disappointed. This book is basically an attack on alternative therapies through the lens of self serving conventional medicine politics rather than attempting to find any merit and mechanism of different alternative modalities. For instance the coverage of vitamins and supplements were ridiculously weak and even out of date with modern research recommendations from conventional medical schools e.g. the sunshine vitamin D link to MS in particular and the much higher emerging vitamin D RDAs in general. The vitamin coverage completely failed to examine the true supplement alternatives like the inexpensive, riveting megadose protocols and clinical results of Duke educated Dr Fred R Klenner and, independently, Canadian Dr. H.T.R. Mount. Likewise I found the discussion of enzymes, nutrition, and digestion lame. These are time critical propositions for the consideration of those deteriorating with a conventional sentence of central neuritis and other neuropathies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
As a person living with MS there were some things in this book that even I didn't know. Its good to have all the correct information from a medical professional. I carry this book with me all the time and refer to it whenever someone tells me, I should do this or that for my MS. We need lots more books like this.

I wanted to read how someone else was living and dealing with Multiple Sclerosis. What is she doing that I could learn from to improve my way of thinking. What am I doing that may be too much, or what can I learn to improve my way of thinking and feeling about myself when my body isn't working correctly.I have not finished the book, but found parts rather funny. It also gave me a feeling of ease knowing that I am not alone.I am doing things just as she is doing, but found I don't have to be perfect.I need to do what I can and rest when is needed.

Product Description

Written by a professor of medicine who is also personally affected by the disease, Multiple Sclerosis offers an overview of every aspect of the condition. It begins by introducing the central nervous system and describing how multiple sclerosis affects the brain and spinal cord. The author then reviews early understanding of MS, how it was first recognized as a disease, and the discoveries that have helped explain its causes.

Moving to contemporary understanding of multiple sclerosis, the book explores the epidemiology of MS in the United States and around the world, describes MS symptoms, and reviews today's treatments and research directions. Perhaps most important, it presents the experiences of persons living with multiple sclerosis, concluding with a discussion of factors affecting these individuals in their homes, families, and communities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Positive help for children
I read this book because my cousin has a similar disease and I was looking for resources for her teenage daughter. This book is an excellent overview of the grieving process that a family goes through when they realize that a disease is going to change their lives forever. It gives teenagers practical advice on where to look for help, coping with your parent's anger and frustration, and balancing caring for yourself and your parent. I also read "Coping with Being Gifted" in the same series and it was just as well written and balanced. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mental Sharpening Stones
Most insightful book for individuals with MS.It offers inspirational notes along with excellent and a variety of suggested methods to maintain your cognitive and emotional stability.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first
I have purchased both of Mr. Gingold's books. Both have useful information, but I found his first book has more general information and living tips. This book, Mental Sharpening Stones, is much more of a "you can do it" type. Each chapter profiles a person dealing with MS, but doesn't provide the coping skills that the first book offered. Still, it is an interesting read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I highly recomend this insightful book for people with MS and those who love them.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Resource
Jeffrey Gingold, internationally acclaimed author and Multiple Sclerosis sufferer, has assembled an exceptional collection of articles and interviews featuring techniques for increasing and maintaining cognitive awareness.

The majority of the informative articles in this collection contain numerous helpful tips on how to keep mental faculties sharp and attentive, and ways to keep the stumbling blocks of Multiple Sclerosis from getting in the way of functioning professionally and privately. These include everything from mental exercises and organizational tips, to handy tools that can be utilized to cope with some of the physical setbacks, such as voice recognition programs for word processors.

If you or a loved one has MS, this book will prove to be a useful resource for day to day living.

Product Description
HEALTH / SELF-HELP"Judy Graham's book should be essential reading for all with MS and for the families and friends of those suffering. It is up-beat without being facile, and it surveys the field simply and intelligently. The clear way in which Ms. Graham tackles the contentious issue of diet is extremely welcome." --Yoga Journal"There is no doubt that this book is by far the most comprehensive, objective, and scientifically sound overview of all the options a person with MS has to help keep the MS disease process well controlled." --Ashton Embry, Ph.D., founder of DIRECT-MSJudy Graham is an inspiration. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when she was just 26 years old, 36 years later Judy Graham is still walking, working, and has successfully birthed and raised a son who is now an adult. In this totally revised and updated edition of her groundbreaking Multiple Sclerosis, first published in 1984, she shares the natural treatments that have helped her and many others with MS stabilize or even reverse the condition.Beginning with the effects of diet, she explains that many people with MS have been eating the wrong foods and shows which foods are"good"and"bad,"how to recognize food sensitivities, and how to correct nutritional deficiencies using dietary supplements. She also looks at reducing the body's toxic overload, whether from mercury amalgam fillings, chemicals, or medications. She presents the exercises with proven benefits for MS she has found most reliable and appropriate, such as yoga, Pilates, and t'ai chi, and explores alternative therapies that provide relief and support to the body's efforts to control MS, including acupuncture, reflexology, shiatsu, Reiki, and ayurveda. Most important are the insights she provides on the effects of negative thoughts on MS. She demonstrates how a positive mental attitude can actually slow down or even reverse the progression of this disease. Judy Graham is living proof that, as devastating as a diagnosis of MS is, life can still be lived to its fullest.JUDY GRAHAM is the editor of New Pathways, a magazine for people with MS, has worked as a TV producer for the BBC and other UK channels, and has written for many newspapers and magazines. She is the author of six books, including Multiple Sclerosis and Having a Baby, and lives in London. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars priceless information
Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (10/10)

Before I read "Managing Multiple Sclerosis Naturally" I knew very little about the disease, yet I do have a friend that has it. She continues to live as normal a life as she can in a wheelchair. According to her doctors the prognosis isn't good.Being an advocate of natural therapies, the title of this book spiked my interest. I wanted to know more so I could help my friend.I'm pleased to say this book didn't disappoint.

I was amazed to find out that dietary factors, such as gluten and dairy as well as digestive problems such as leaky gut and Candida, may be the cause of Multiple Sclerosis. In our western society "wrong diets" are prevalent and, personally, just being told I have Candida made me stop in my tracks when I read that there is a theory that it may cause MS.

Reading further, I found out that "pregnant women with MS often go into remission."As well, there are twice as many women as men that have MS.Graham says "For some women, MS symptoms get worse before menstruation and during menopause," therefore "Progesterone may have profound neuroprotective effects in addition to helping women with MS combat premenstrual tension and menopause symptoms."

Judy Graham, diagnosed with MS at twenty-six, offers a whole gamut of information in "Managing Multiple Sclerosis Naturally" from understanding MS, to nutrition, from physical and complementary therapies, to living a healthy lifestyle. Although I don't have MS I found this book a wealth of information just to help me understand what it is and what steps to take to prevent it.For example, just reading ways to detoxify the body will not only help anyone with MS but also prevent any disease in those that don't have MS.

I believe "Managing Multiple Sclerosis Naturally" is one of the most important books on the market. I highly recommend it to anyone with MS as well as anyone that wants to return their body to a healthy state. The information presented is priceless. ... Read more
