Product Description
It started with a stumble here or there. It was no big deal. I wasn’t the most graceful child anyway. Slurring my words - that was a big deal.

Of course there was one doctor. One doctor led to another, and yet another. They couldn’t tell me what was wrong. DidI have a slight stroke in my sleep? Was it lupus? Maybe itwas lime disease. No, no and no.

Three doctors didn’t know what was wrong. The fourth doctor, Dr. Louis Pearlstein, he knew.

"Wendy," he said. "You have multiple sclerosis."

I looked at him as if he were talking to someone else. There had to be another Wendy sitting in the office. He wasn’t talking to me. He couldn’t be.

I don’t remember much about that day or that conversation. While the doctor talked I felt like I was in a Charlie Brown cartoon listening to the teacher, "Wah, wah, wah, wah, wah." Sure, I heard every word he said, but I definitely didn’t understand a single one of them.

I do remember feeling empty and alone. It’s a feeling that came to visit and never left. That day, my entire world collapsed around me. From my limited knowledge of the disease, I knew was destined to become a prisoner in my own body. I was going to become the object of everyone’s sorrow. Though I had their love, I would also have their pity. I didn't want to be pitied.

Multiple sclerosis. Those are two very powerful words. Say them out loud. See, they don’t hold any power when you say them. Their power comes the minute you’re diagnosed. Almost like cancer or HIV. Those are powerful words, too.

That was four years ago and hundreds of doctor’s appointments later. Turns out I was the Wendy the doctor was talking to that day. Fortunately, I'm not the Wendy that left the doctor's office. That Wendy didn't have any fight in her.

I really don’t know when this feeling came over me. One day I woke up tired of feeling alone and depressed. I knew that there were people out there who were feeling the same things. I wasn’t alone, and I didn’t want anyone else thinking they were too. We’re all on a different, unique journey with MS, but all-in-all, we‘re still in this together.

Don’t get me wrong. I‘m not living in a dream world. I have days where the pain is more than I can take. I have the type of MS that they call "relapsing remitting". From what I’ve been told, the last MRI shows no new lesions, that’s what they call ‘remission’. If some MRI says that I’m in remission for the time being, why doesn’t it feel that way? Everyday that I feel as though I am not in remission seems to take me further and further away from it. Sometimes I want to quit fighting. I want to stop taking my medicines and die. I have those days, but I try not to stay in that frame of mind.

At 39, I’ll never be the woman I was when I was 32 or 30. As the disease progresses, I'm realizing that some days won’t be as good as others. For that fact, some weeks won’t be either. And I don’t think long-term anymore. It’s not because I’m afraid to die. Sometimes I think it’s because I’m afraid to live.

My personal crusade and the love of my husband are the source of my strength. I know there may not be a cure for this disease in my lifetime, but I refuse to give up hope. Even if they don’t find a cure while I’m alive, it’s what I do while I’m here that matters.

I want to make a difference and I plan to. Right now I talk about the disease that has wiped away my dreams of having a relatively normal life. I talk to anyone and everyone who will listen.

As I mentioned before, my husband Ed is also a great source of strength. I fight for him when I can’t fight for myself. And because he loves me so much, he fights for me when I can’t do it for either of us. His love is unconditional. And through his love, I’ve finally realized that I don’t have to be strong all of the time. When I feel myself spiraling out of control, he's always there to catch me when my world stops spinning.

My journey is taking me on a long, winding road. Some days I can walk it alone. Some days I have to have help. There’s no shame in asking for help.

So let me tell you, find something positive you can hold on to. So much about this disease controls us, and we’re at its every whim. Find something you can control, whether it’s your actions or your attitude. Don’t let this disease take everything from you. Surround yourself with positive people and laugh as much as you can.

When you have times you’re feeling alone, remember you’re not. I’m here. I’m Wendy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MS can be healed!
I am 71 and I have had MS since I was 26. I recognized myself so much in Rachelle Breslow's well-written book that I read in one sitting. Her complete recovery aftertwelve short years gives me hope in my own healing. "Who Said So?" reads so easily and touches many factors that influence our physical condition. It also sheds light on the reasons why certain people are afflicted with MS: lack of self-worth, repression of our own needs, compulsion to please and help others, needing to be loved, disregarding our real feelings, neglecting to follow our innermost knowing. This one sentence especially, " But gradually I got rid of the walker and then the cane", rekindled my conviction that this could happen to me also. It's with a new hope and persistence that I am pursuing my journey towards complete healing. Rachelle is living what Helen Keller once wrote: "Hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible."

I wanted to know the quality and related good price to my product. it took a reasonable time to receive it but I think it was due to all that winter blast we had here in Virginia.

5-0 out of 5 stars helpful book
I read this several years ago even though I do not suffer from MS or any similar physical health condition. I enjoyed it as a story of self-improvement and recovery. The story chronicles Rachelle Breslow's diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis and her progression towards health. At first negatively impacted by the media and medical community's hopelessly pessimistic predictions for people with MS, Rachelle soon decided to question the inevitability of a future of severe painful physical deterioration and implements in her life many positive changes and healing practices. At first focused mostly on physical recovery, Rachelle soon finds that her physical state is influenced by many factors, including mental, emotional and spiritual. As she improve these, implementing whatever healing practices and positive changes she can make and letting go of things that have been dragging her down, including a deprecating marraige partner and years of negative self-talk, her condition slowly improves. Included in the book are examples of some of the positive visualizations Rachelle uses to heal her mental and emotional states, along with her vegetarian recovery diet, exercise routine, and experience with a pilgrimage to a US ashram in which, through meditation and guidance, she comes in touch with self-acceptance and self-love again. The book has information to help readers build their own self-care routine. The story is particularly remarkable because Breslow questioned and triumphed despite what authority figures know about the disease, which isn't much other than it's symptoms and that it is incurable. A well-written and engaging inspirational story. ... Read more

Product Description
This practical guide for physicians and other health care professionals discusses the impact of fatigue on the individual with MS, the potential etiologies underlying MS-related fatigue, its work up and diagnosis, and pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management strategies.

Fatigue is perhaps the single most prevalent and disabling symptom of the multiple sclerosis, and limits patients' activity more than any other MS symptom. The identification of fatigue as a distinct clinical entity requires both art and science, and most of all, a willingness and ability to listen carefully to patients and their families. The physician's ability to obtain a comprehensive history requires a full understanding of the circumstances in which fatigue occurs (physical, cognitive, and psychosocial) and demands consideration of a large number of disorders, including anxiety, depression, excessive daytime sleepiness, pain, and spasticity, all of which may mimic or contribute to fatigue.

While fatigue is almost exclusively a subjective experience, depending on the patient's ability to understand and report this symptom, there are effective methods for identifying the existence of fatigue, determining its severity, and distinguishing it from related or contributing disorders such as depression, pain, and sleep disorders.

Readers will learn that fatigue need not be tolerated by the MS patient. Various therapies, support systems, and treatment of underlying affective disorders can all alleviate fatigue or reduce its impact, restoring the patient's energy levels and ability to participate in life. Virtually every MS patient with fatigue can benefit from intervention, and failing to treat the symptom of fatigue with the respect that it deserves is a serious detriment to patient care. ... Product Description

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an enigmatic immune mediated disease of the central nervous system that affects about 350,000 individuals in the US, and many more around the world. The mechanism of this disease is largely unknown and there is no cure for it. However, there are several well-characterized experimental animal models that help us understand and speculate about potential mechanisms of pathology in this disease. Many of the experimental therapies designed for this disease rely on testing the drugs in animal models before using it in clinical trials. This book combines for the first time the different experimental models for MS (including immune-mediated and viral) under one roof, and highlights aspects that are different or shared among these experimental models. It’s aim is to improve our understanding of this devastating disease and help us think about potential additional therapies for it.

Product Description
Treating Multiple Sclerosis: An integrative approach you will not get from your doctor provides information helpful to decrease the symptoms of multiple sclerosis. The author shares her experience with a system that includes lifestyle changes, nutritional supplements, Homeopathic medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, hypnotherapy and more. This system will help M.S. patients reduce inflammation, prevent demyelination and facilitate remyelination of demyelinated nerves. These modalities may be used alone or with western allopathic care. The author, Reena Arora, is a molecular biologist and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the year 2001. Frustrated by the limited options provided by western medicine and the lack of improvement in her symptoms, Reena decided to pursue alternative remedies. Working with Dr. Yeshi Dhonden, the former physician to His Holiness The Dalai Lama, along with several other practitioners, Reena was able to develop a system that has left her free of M.S. symptoms and any disability.Currently Reena continues her care at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and with alternative care practitioners. However, Reena did not blindly accept the remedies she was instructed to follow by the alternative care practitioners. She used her expertise in molecular biology to research the scientific basis of each remedy and dietary recommendation. This book cites western scientific publications from research institutions to provide evidence for each remedy discussed. Learn why Homeopathic doctors recommend phosphorous supplements for multiple sclerosis patients and about the science explaining its role in a mechanism for remyelination. Read about why eating cherries reduces inflammation and the scientific research demonstrating the impact in multiple sclerosis patients. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Methods in this book are working!
I bought this book for a close friend who had been suffering from MS for a year. She was on steroids and a steady diet of conventional drugs. The methods in this book were new to her as she certainly didn't hear them from her doctor.I am pleased to report she has had tremendous and rapid success trying these new approaches and her doctors are lowering her dosages of conventional meds significantly. O

For anyone with MS that has not been had success with conventional medication (or are tired of the side effects)I strongly encourage you to give this a read.

As someone who has been suffering from primary progressive MS for the last 16 years and has tried conventional, alternative and experimental therapies for many of those years, I find this book a huge disappointment. It is way overpriced for what it is and really doesn't shed any new light on treating MS. ... Read more

Product Description

Multiple sclerosis—MS—strikes about one in a thousand North Americans, usually in early adulthood, when they are building careers and starting families. Because the disease involves the central nervous system, its effects are wide-ranging and difficult to predict.

Until the 1990s, we could treat some symptoms of MS but not the disease itself. Now we have several drugs that work against MS, and others are being developed. We still can’t cure MS, but we can slow its progress and diminish its effects.

This fourth edition of Multiple Sclerosis: The Facts You Need is a comprehensive guide to living with MS, supported by diagrams, case histories, a drug table, and an extensive list of helpful books and organizations.

Topics include:

  • What MS is, and who gets it
  • How MS is diagnosed
  • Why the disease affects different people in different ways
  • How “relapsing-remitting” MS differs from “progressive MS”
  • How people with MS, and their families, can adapt their homes, careers, and lifestyles to cope with the disease
  • Which treatments work, which don’t, and what help is on the horizon

Combining authoritative medical advice and practical hands-on tips, Multiple Sclerosis: The Facts You Need is an invaluable guide for anyone affected, directly or indirectly, by this complex disease.

Product Description

There is a need for a paradigm shift in our thinking about the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis.

Challenging Charcot s hypothesis that inflammatory response is the primary contributor to demyelination, Dr. Rodriguez and colleagues take a fresh, bold look at the causes and possible treatments of MS.

Assuming oligodendrocyte injury as a prerequisite to MS, the authors explore viruses, toxins and genetic defects as possible culprits. They present novel methods to interrupt and reverse demyelination. This book examines the correlation between axonal loss and clinical deficits, including the implied role of the CD8+ T cell and perforin. It assesses proteases, specifically, kallikrein 6, which are strongly associated with active demyelination. By directing natural autoantibodies against oligodendrocytes that demonstrate remyelination in animal models, the authors envision clinical trials for remyelination enhancement.

As internationally recognized specialists in a wide range of MS disciplines, the authors explore genetic tools for identifying patients who are most likely to experience spontaneous remyelination. Epidemiology studies offer additional avenues of treatment. Examples include uric acid, statin drugs, estrogen and progesterone.

MS affects nearly 400,000 people in the United States, many of whom are between18 and 40 years of age. With their novel, multifaceted approach to basic science and their applications in understanding cause and treatment the authors offer help to clinicians and hope to patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars MS World Review- A "Must Read"
Review by MS World (May 2007):This really is a must-read for anyone who cares for someone with MS.People with MS who are currently care-free(or care-less) would do well to read it also.Mindfully illustrated, well organized, and exhaustive in its breadth of information, the book addresses the important issues facing those who are trying to retain quality of life at home while coping with worsening MS....details could be chilling for one who has MS and may be daunting for a caregiver, but the writing is calm and supportive. One feels encouraged to explore options rather than run from unpleasant realities....thankfully, there are suggestions for caregiver relief and extensive resources for outside aid involving respite care and vacation/travel arrangements....writing as a reviewer who has worsening MS...I would refer to this book without hesitation should I need the knowledge it contains. Meyer and Paula Derr RN (co-owner of InforMed) is a comprehensive and practical guide written for anyone, especially family members, responsible for the care of someone with MS. No experience or knowledge is presumed of the reader; chapters walk one through everything from basic advice for making one's home safe and comfortable to ensuring a balanced diet and sufficient exercise to avoiding caregiver burnout and much more. Simple black-and-white drawings illustrate key points where a visual aid is valuable in this practical book, which covers matters such as saving money and applying health care effectively as surely as the more labor-intensive aspects of caregiving. Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars not helpful
this is the second time i've ever given a book less than 4 stars.i was quite disappointed.the content, i expected, might help family members in coping with a new diagnosis by a loved one (as the cover seemed to claim).with content taken from other books in the series, it almost seems to make ms sound like a disease which absolutely results in severe physical and cognitive degeneration.it provides lists, lists of everything, sometimes listing resources that might be of more help to caregivers of persons with other disorders.other times, the lists seemed to include almost random content.counseling included three paragraphs - five sentences - without suggesting resources or support groups for caregivers.probably the most helpful section of the book was on physical modifications to the home, mobility devices, etc.even it, however, was unfortunately incomplete.the list of mobility devices included scooters, wheelchairs, and pictures of many canes but none of canadian crutches, which seem to help many folks with m.s. in maintaining stability.the book was not written in an easy to read format, list after list provided few transitions, content seemed mis-leading, ill-informed, and incomplete.the physical modification section was good and i thought about 2 stars, but, based on the generally poor content throughout the rest of the book, i'm giving it a one star.i hope that i'm not being too critical and that others will share about their experience of this book.obviously, i would not recommend this book at the retail or current discounted price.if you have an opportunity to get it at a library used book sale for under $1, you might consider it. ... Product Description
This comprehensive resource examines all aspects of the care of the patient with multiple sclerosis (MS). It focuses on the themes of the importance of patient-centered nursing, comprehensive assessment of the person with MS, the wide variation in the course of MS, and the role of the nurse.

The early part of this book examines the theory of MS, i.e. the pathophysiology, the epidemiology, the types of MS and the various diagnostic tests. Practical aspects are included, particularly in caring for someone who is going through the process of being diagnosed as having MS. There follows an exploration of the theory and practice of interferon therapies and a review of symptom management using case studies and vignettes. The later chapters discuss the complications of severe MS and the implications for the family and nurse in caring for someone who is severely disabled.

Megan Burgess, a Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Greater Manchester Centre for Clinical Neurosciences, Hope Hospital, Salford has used her years of practical experience to produce an authoritative, single-volume library that will be essential reading for nurses in hospital and in the community who come into contact with people with MS. ... Product Description

In multiple sclerosis (MS), conventional magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) has proved to be a valuable tool to increase diagnostic confidence and for monitoring the efficacy of experimental treatment. However, cMRI has limited specificity and accuracy of cMRI to the most disabling aspects of the MS pathology, known to occur in and outside macroscopic lesions. Modern quantitative MR techniques have the potential to overcome the limitations of cMRI, and their application is changing dramatically our understanding of how MS causes irreversible disability. In detail, there is an increasing body of MR evidence that MS is not only a white matter disease and does not only cause focal lesions, as well as that neurodegeneration is an important aspect of the disease (since the earliest clinical phases), which is only partially related to inflammatory changes. There is also increasing perception that modern MR methodologies should be more extensively employed in clinical trials to derive innovative information.

Written by world-renowned scientists, the volume provides a state-of-the-art on the most recent MRI techniques related to MS, and it will bi and indispensable tool for all those working in this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rerversing Multiple Sclerosis
The book is very helpful to anyone who has multiple sclerosis or for a caregiver. It offers many alternatives treatments not offered by your neurologist.Book is also written by someone who has multiple sclerosis who happens to be a naturopath doctor & Chiropractor too. It's a must get book for anyone with MS.

1-0 out of 5 stars Painful to read, I want my money AND time back!
I bought this book by accident, i wanted to buy the MS recovery Diet book and got confused. What a tremendous waste of money and time. First, the author has seemingly no awareness of her wealth and privilege. Casual references to her driver, private cook and so forth. Second, the book is beyond horribly written. It reads like a bad romance novel full of melodramatic statements and cliches. I felt embarrassed for her every other page. Third, she is incredibly and dangerously ignorant for someone claiming to have naturopathic training. I seriously hope readers don't evaluate the training of other Naturopaths based on her portrayal. There is absolutely no way that a real naturopath would think Betaseron was a beta blocker, or not know that epstein- barr virus and mononucleosis were related if not the same disease process. She seems obsessed with protecting her ego throughout, repetitively referencing herself or even forcing the idea that she is a physician, medically trained and so forth. Yet as she uncovers more and more information from different healers, she seems shocked and amazed at what they illuminate for her about nutrition and health. Things any entry level chiropractor or naturopath should know. Heck, I am a midwife, herbalist and alternative healthcare practitioner as well without nearly the claim to training she makes and I learned half this crap 20 years ago. She references her extensive nutritional counseling background yet she describes a diet (prepared by her private chef) that would make any healthcare provider reel. I honestly wonder if this book isn't a giant hoax it is so full of misinformation and almost satirical exaggeration and cliche.
Fortunately for us, there are far better books out there about MS and complimentary or non- allopathic medicine to be found. I was diagnosed within the last year, but I have been ill for at least 10 without a diagnosis. Fortunately, my symptoms and disease progression have been managed very well almost entirely with alternative modalities because I didn't know what I had. Now I am integrating both types of healing with good success, and I hope this awful book doesn't scare anyone else away from trying a complimentary approach.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not realistic
Halfway through the book I gave up - I don't need to read about how everyone thought she looked wonderful and how did she have MS ?? - I've been living with it for 35 years - this book is for those newly diagnosed who are going through the denial phase - not relevant for me although I should have realized that before I purchased it - there is no reversing MS - there are remissions but no reversals and to think that there are is a fallacy -

2-0 out of 5 stars ok
as a professor of neuropsychiatry AND someone who suffers from MS, i found this book to be okay.it discusses some of the alternative methods for the treatment of MS that have been used and are presently in use.she offers some evidence, both objective and subjective, in support of her claims.the writing is relatively easy to follow. She uses fairly short sentences. It pulls the reader in at times, but, with equal energy, it pushes or repulses you away.i was quite disappointed overall with the book, hoping that it would be both more descriptive and scholarly.i would not recommend this book for use in the classroom, for "primary care providers", or for those with MS.

1-0 out of 5 stars MS "cure" books
There have been many claims by people who have claimed to have cured, erased or eradicated their MS symptoms, they sell you a book $$$ you apply their principles yet you still have MS, how many of us have ordered a book followed it to the letter and got no results ? Probably most of us, if there was a cure for MS, someone on the internet would know about it. They prey on our fears and in our situation we are so desperate we will try or do anything, only to feel more desperate and helpless for this dreaded thing they call MS, however when we hear something new or there is a new book or protocol out that we haven't heard about by someone who claims to have cured themselves, we will jump right in and the vicious cruel cycle will start over again.

Product Description
A synthesis of current concepts about the evaluation, treatment, and future directions in MS. On the evaluation side, the authors review the use of MRI, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, functional MRI, and three-dimensional MRI, and consider the rapidly developing body of pathologic information they have yielded. On the treatment side, the focus is on recently approved medications (Novantrone), new indications for medications (CHAMPS Trial), medications in development (Oral Interferon Tau, Oral Copaxone, and Oral Cellcept), immunosuppressive therapy for both progressive disease and symptomatic therapy; the current medications for treating relapsing-remitting MS (Avonex, Betaseron, and Copaxone) are also discussed. For future directions, the authors present the current best thinking, as well as the latest discoveries in immunology relating to MS, including groundbreaking B-cell research and its applications to specific immunotherapies, and the use of immune markers for tracking the disease. ...
