Product Description
Cleft lip (cheiloschisis) and cleft palate (palatoschisis) (colloquially known as harelip), which can also occur together as cleft lip and palate, are variations of a type of clefting congenital deformity caused by abnormal facial development during gestation. A cleft is a fissure or opening?a gap. It is the non-fusion of the body's natural structures that form before birth. Clefts can also affect other parts of the face, such as the eyes, ears, nose, cheeks and forehead. In 1976, Dr. Paul Tessier described fifteen lines of cleft. These craniofacial clefts are rare and are frequently described as Tessier clefts using the numerical locator devised by Dr. Tessier. A cleft lip or palate can be successfully treated with surgery soon after birth. Cleft lips or palates occur in somewhere between one in 600-800 births. ... Read more

Product Description
The aim of eye muscle surgery is to restore alignment of the visual axes and ocular stability. Albeit compensatory and largely empirical, this surgery can be perfected with a better understanding of the physiopathological mechanisms involved, more detailed semiological analysis, the taking into account of intra-operative data and the use of microsurgical techniques. The three parts of this book allow each of these factors to be discussed at length.

Part one covers the basic data relevant to strabismus surgery, with detailed analysis of the effect of different surgical procedures on oculomotor equilibrium and dynamics and their application to any given disorder. The psychological aspects of strabismus surgery are also discussed.

Part two gives a full description of the different types of anaesthesia, surgical instruments, and all current operative techniques, covering the aspects of surgical access to, and operations on, the rectus and oblique muscles. Repeat surgery, surgical incidents and complications are treated in a separate chapter.

Part three provides the surgical strategy to be followed in individual disorders, whether these be concomitant, paralytic or mechanical, and in nystagmus.

A complete and comprehensive text on eye muscle surgery, the clinical and surgical material fully illustrated with drawings and photographs, this book will be of interest to students as well as the experienced ophthalmologist and orthoptist.

Product Description
Paraneoplastic neurological disorders (PND) are dueto immune-mediated damage of the nervous system, andthe immune response is believed to be triggered asanti-tumor immunity. Early recognition of PNDfacilitates prompt detection of underlying tumors.Detection of paraneoplastic neuronal autoantibodiesfacilitates early diagnosis of PND. A novelparaneoplastic neuronal antibody, anti-neuronalnuclear antibody type 3 (ANNA-3) was identified ineleven patients, the majority had SCLC and diverseneurological manifestations. Autoimmune myasthenia gravis (MG) is due toimpaired neuromuscular transmission predominantlydue to pathogenic acetylcholine receptor (AChR)autoantibodies. Muscle-specific tyrosine kinase(MuSK) autoantibodies are detectedin some AChR autoantibodies-negative generalized MGpatients. Among 562 Mayo Clinic patients with adult- onset generalized MG based on clinical andelectrophysiological criteria, AChRautoantibodies seronegativity rate was 8.2% and MuSKautoantibodies was detected in 38% of AChRautoantibodies-negative patients. The seronegativityrate in adult-onset generalized MG is ~5%. ... Read more

Product Description
In anatomy, the accessory nerve is a nerve that controls specific muscles of the neck. As a part of it was formerly believed to originate in the brain, it is considered a cranial nerve. Based on its location relative to other such nerves, it is designated the eleventh of twelve cranial nerves, and is thus abbreviated CN XI. Although anatomists typically refer to the accessory nerve in singular, there are in reality two accessory nerves, one on each side of the body. Traditional descriptions of the accessory nerve divide it into two parts: a spinal part and a cranial part. But because the cranial component rapidly joins the vagus nerve and serves the same function as other vagal nerve fibers, modern descriptions often consider the cranial component part of the vagus nerve and not part of the accessory nerve proper. Thus in contemporary discussions of the accessory nerve, the common practice is to dismiss the cranial part altogether, referring to the accessory nerve specifically as the spinal accessory nerve. ... Excerpt: Myopia (Greek: , mupia, "nearsightedness"), is a refractive defect of the eye in which collimated light produces image focus in front of the retina when accommodation is relaxed. Those with myopia see near objects clearly but far away objects appear blurred. With myopia, the eyeball is too long, or the cornea is too steep, so images are focused in the vitreous inside the eye rather than on the retina at the back of the eye. The opposite defect of myopia is hyperopia or "farsightedness" or "long-sightedness"this is where the cornea is too flat or the eye is too small. Eye care professionals most commonly correct myopia through the use of corrective lenses, such as glasses or contact lenses. It may also be corrected by refractive surgery, but this does have many risks and side effects. The corrective lenses have a negative optical power (i.e. are concave) which compensates for the excessive positive diopters of the myopic eye. Alternative ideas and methods of treatment exist, most notably the claim that myopia is caused by excessive near sight work. Myopia has been classified in various manners. Borish and Duke-Elder classified myopia by cause: Elevation of blood-glucose levels can also cause edema (swelling) of the crystalline lens (hyperphacosorbitomyopicosis) as a result of sorbitol (sugar alcohol) accumulating in the lens.
