Product Description
This is the User Guide for "Patrick's Original Phonobites: Muscle Training for English Pronunciation." Please note that the audio exercises are not included in the User Guide.

"Phonobites" is a unique set of exercises for English pronunciation, available for online purchase through licensed digital distributors (and in CD format from Amazon.com). There are no words, only sounds. There is one exercise for each of the basic sounds of standard North American English (17 vowels, and 24 consonants). Because there are no words, Phonobites can be used by any learner or speaker of English, at any level, from beginner to advanced. These exercises can be used in the classroom, but they can also be used at home. By practicing at home—alone, or with your family or friends—you will build up a strong image of each sound in your mind, and the muscle strength and control for making each sound in a variety of rhythms and volumes. This will help your pronunciation of individual words, your listening (because it is easy to recognize a sound if you can make it), and your general speaking abilities. Practice will also revive your skills of imitation, which are important for language learning.

Practice every day!
Become independent!
Save money on courses and materials!
Phonobites will set you free!

This User Guide will help you to understand the essential elements of English pronunciation, and also guide you in how to use Phonobites, at home and in the classroom.

1. Introduction to Phonobites
2. A Quick Guide to Pronunciation in English
3. The Sounds of English

Phonobites FAQ

Q: What is the difference between standard Canadian English and standard American English?
A: At the level of the sounds, there is virtually no difference at all. Many Canadians have gone to the U.S. and become famous actors, singers, and announcers, without changing their pronunciation at all. So there is really no difference. That is why, for Phonobites, we can say that these are the basic sounds of "standard North American English."

Q. Can I use Phonobites for British English?
A. Yes. In British English, there are a few sounds that are slightly different, and a few additional sounds that are not used in standard North American English, but most of the sounds are the same. And once you have revived your skills of imitation by practicing Phonobites, it will be much easier to imitate the accents you hear.

Q: Is Phonobites useful for speech therapy?
A: Patrick is not a speech therapist, and these exercises have not been tested for speech therapy. However, they are very effective, and because they involve only the "musical" aspects of language, we think that they will be very effective for helping people who have speech problems.
We cannot officially recommend them for speech therapy, but go ahead, give them a try!

Q: I want to be an actor, but I am worried about my accent. Will Phonobites help me?
A: Yes, Phonobites will help anyone, no matter what your profession is, or what you aim to be. The main thing is to take charge, and do it on your own.

4-0 out of 5 stars When Muscle Pain Won't Go Away
This book is specifically about Fibromyalgia.I learned of it many years ago and thought it was one of the best I'd ever read on the subject.Written for the layman and easy to understand. My sister-in-law was recently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, so I bought her the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty helpful
This book is helpful for people with chronic pain and especially for those with fibromyalgia.Gayle Backstrom writes this book with the idea that all parts of our body are connected (mind/body/spirit), therefore she gives helpful suggestions that include all areas.

Fair warning though, this book is a bit on the technical side. So, if you have 'fibro fog' it may be hard to get through and/or understand sections.I recommend reading it on days when you are clearer.Or, do what I did - have someone else read the section and then explain it to you.I had to do this with the research portion of the book.

Subjects covered in this book include, symptoms, latest research, physical treatment, cognitive therapy and support systems.

There are also many appendixes such as: a list of arthritis chapters, a list of resources, surfing the web and a list of fibromyalgia researchers.

I found this book to be helpful, though it wasn't one of my favorite fibromyalgia books. For my favorite ones you can check out my 'about you' area and look at the ones I have reviewed and my self-help book listmania list.

I read this book for more help dealing with fibromyalgia, but I found that I was giving my mom advice from the book, since she suffers from chronic pain in her back/neck, hips and wrist/thumb.

5-0 out of 5 stars YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND
I read this book a few yrs. after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I cannot begin to describe the sense of relief and companionship this book brought to me. When friends, loved ones, & acquaintances are"diagnosed", This is the first "therapy" I recommend and/or purchase for them as a gift. It gives the reader a sense that she/heis not alone. The authors have a way of "validating" the personsuffering, and helps the others in their lives understand and offercompassion. I have lived with fibromyalgia, and several other autoimmunedisorders for 7+ yrs now. I still consider this book the best first step intreatment!Well worth the investment and time. The only thing I disagreewith in the edition I still own, is that the use of narcotic painmedications is highly admonished...so often, and to a degree that can makethe reader/sufferer that must rely on such medications to function feelguilty.Since fibromyalgia is so often accompanied by other rheumatic-likeconditions, I would never want ANYONE to add GUILT to their endless list ofproblems and symptoms. There is a place for narcotics in the treatment offibromyalgia. Many people (myself included) are unable to take NSAIDS, andthe only other medicinal alternative is maintenance narcotics.(In additionto antidepressents, muscle relaxants, etc.)Research is finding thatwithin the FM population, NSAIDS (non steroidal anti-inflamatories) are notwell tolerated by the FM patient. This is one of the best FM companionsavailable!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good resource book for Fibromyalgia.
Defintely worth reading. A good reference book for those diagnosed with Fibromyalgia or those wishing to have a better understanding of FMS. I found the personal account of the author's experience very true to life. (Ihave Fibromyalgia.) This is real life, and those looking for a miraclestorybook ending won't find it here. This book deals addresses the factthat Fibromyalgia is real and won't just go away, however it also dealswith the many aspects of how people can deal with Fibromyalgia.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of the most helpful books ever written on FMS.
This book is a wonderful blending of both practical advice for everyday living and information on the most current medical research. Even if you own all the other books out there on fibromyalgia (I do...), you will stillfind a great deal of valuable information in this one!It is really thatgood. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Muscles Testing and Function
Good book with a lot of great info on testing.Great for therapist, pt or athletic trainers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reference for OTs and PTs
I found this book (older edition) at one of my clinical sites. It it well put together and easy to follow. This is a great text for students who are learning MMT.I only wish that I had know about this book sooner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For All Body Therapies!
This is an excellent book.
It is a important reference book which I use and read cover to cover. The biggest plus about this book is the concept of alignment, and the various grouping of restrictions and weaknesses within the body. It shows this and explains these (rectrictions vs weakeness) very clearly and specifically which makes it easy to pick up theses patterns in people's bodies.
Although there are better books which are set out better, the commentary and insights contained within the book are invaluable.
It is a bit of a bible in many physical therapy circles.
Don't get too caught up, and remember that this book should only be a start point as things are more complicated than this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile purchase
If you ever needed to know what all the muscles in the body were, where exactly they attached to the skeleton, what movement they created, and ways to test how strong they are this is the bible. As a physical therapist, this has been an invaluable book to have both as a student and as a clinician.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book to work with
This is a refined and refinded text of an excellent book. It has a place in so many therapists bookcase eg.Osteopaths chiropractors physiotherapists etc etc. Go and buy! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Muscle Pain Syndromes and Fibromyalgia: Pressure Algometry for Quantification of Diagnosis and Treatment Outcome represents a new approach by quantifying the diagnosis and outcome assessment of musculoskeletal pain by pressure algometry. Such quantitative studies are useful in daily practice of pain management as well as in research and medicolegal documentation. The basic question of whether or not pressure sensitivity has reached an abnormal level can be answered quantitatively. Findings of different clinicians can be compared in numbers.

The efficacy of different therapeutic procedures can be assessed numerically immediately after injections or physical therapy. Long-term effects of pain medications or physical modalities can be documented. The measurements take a few minutes and are simple and reliable.

Muscle Pain Syndrome and Fibromyalgia is clinically oriented and presents the experience of internationally recognized authorities. This means you’ll learn:

  • the employment of pressure algometry in quantitative evaluation of pain alleviation by medications and physical modalities
  • documentation of long-term follow up results in plantar fasciitis, failed back surgery and degenerative hip disorders treated by a new injection technique
  • the quantified diagnosis of tender spots, active and latent trigger points and fibromyalgia
  • the specific measurement sites, methods and goals for the evaluation of different treatments
  • you will see how renowned clinicians in Brazil, Italy, Finland, The United States, and Taiwan employ algometry for quantitative diagnosis and evaluation of treatment results. Immediate effects of treatment as well as long-term results were successfully monitored by algometry
  • the importance of distinguishing sensitization in the skin, subcutaneous, and deep tissues for differential diagnosis of muscle pain syndromes
  • sensitivity over active and latent trigger points and referred pain zones

Muscle Pain Syndromes and Fibromyalgia is a multidisciplinary comprehensive treatise reviewing the present status of clinical and research application of pressure algometry. This inexpensive method by its simplicity is suitable for employment in the daily practice of pain management. PA represents significant progress in approaching the important but difficult problem of how to quantify a diagnosis that is based upon such a subjective category as pain.

Myofascial pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, muscle spasm and inflammation in general can be assessed quantitatively.

3-0 out of 5 stars Muscle Energy Techniques
I just finished Dr. Chaitow's book, Muscle Energy Techniques, and found the book quite informative. The text itself was very good and explains the theory as well as techniques necessary to use this body of knowledge. I was quite disappointed with the DVD that was included with the book. I tried it on one DVD player and got a message on the screen that said "DVD Incompatable." Another DVD player allowed me to see a few pictures and that was all. I returned the DVD to its jacket and put the book on the shelf. The book itself will make a good reference, but I'll probably never try the DVD again. Even though the book was good, I believe I could have gotten another book on the topic for less money without having to pay for a non-functional DVD. The lesson here is to be sure of what you are purchasing before spending your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Osteopath specific
This is a well written, clear book, but as a massage therapist I found there was a steep learning curve for osteopathic theory and jargon. It took a lot of time to read through to find out that the techniques used were actually very similar to ones I had already learnt, just with a much bigger physiological theory base behind them. Also, it is coming from the perspective of osteo/chiro where apparently they always tend to do manipulations, not massage, so a lot of time is spent on the apparently revolutionary viewpoint that working on muscles helps pain and dysfunction. Duh!

In short, a great book for osteos, but not so great for massage therapists.

5-0 out of 5 stars MET's Simplified
What a fantastic book! I am a massage therapist in Australia and wish I had known about this book whilst I was in training. The content is written in a way that makes it very easy to understand. I have also found techniques that work much better than the ones I was taught in class. Well done Leon!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Tool
This book is an excellent resource and the techniques within are commonly used within the physical therapy arena.MET, although not a panacea, is a valuable tool that should be included within a comprehensive treatment plan for numerous neuromusculoskeletal conditions. To the layperson; this isn't a book to be bought for self-treatment nor for trying out on family members.Seek advice only from a qualified physician (MD, DO) and then, if the physician deems outpatient therapy is an option for your care, inquire with your physical therapist about muscle energy techniques as part of your treatment plan.

5-0 out of 5 stars A little goldmine
I teach massage therapy here in Australia. Often, students will ask about books they should buy in order to become better therapists, and this is one that I always happily recommend. The techniques are well explained and relatively easy to apply. What's more they are safe, as well as beautifully effective. Anyone interested in improving their results with bodywork should have a look at this (and most of Chaitow's work, as far as I am concerned!). ... Read more

Biomechatronics is an applied interdisciplinary science that aims to integrate mechanical elements, electronics and parts of biological organisms. Biomechatronics includes the aspects of biology, mechanics, and electronics. It also encompasses the fields of robotics and neuroscience. One example of Biomechatronics is a study done by Hugh Herr a professor at M.I.T.. Herr tore off the muscles of frog legs, to attach to a mechanical fish and by pulsing electrical current through the muscle fibers, which caused the fish to swim. The goal of these experiments is to make devices that interact with human muscle, skeleton, and nervous systems. The end result is that the devices will help with human motor control that was lost or impaired by trauma, disease or birth defects. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Highway to a Corrected Diagnosis-Thank you Dr. Davidson
I don't recall exactly when I began to struggle to read your 1989 book, "Chronic Muscle Pain Syndrome". I had bought it at the library bookstore after the library discarded it. Eventually, I was so ill, I became bed ridden and brain fog was so bad I couldn't remember much of anything I read. Your book was on the shelf beside my bed along with a highlighting marker and a pen. As I began to read, I remember what Oprah describes today as "AhHa moments". Your book gave me hope. I could only digest a page at a time; I would highlight things which applied to me so I could later show them to my primary care physician. Then I would roll over and sleep; I'd awaken and read another page; then, I'd roll over and sleep some more; and, so it went as I read a page then slept; read another page and slept some more . . . . I was so fortunate to have a physician at the time who would "listen" to me. By now, I was using an electric scooter for mobility each time I visited the VA Hospital in Washington, DC. I was in too much pain and too weak to walk the halls; I looked like a living dead person because I was so pale--colorless. I recall my blood pressure being very low each time it was taken.

I took your book to Dr. RW (my former Primary Care physician-now retired), along with all the page number reference notes I had written inside the front cover; I remember him looking at it briefly and saying, "There are some tests we can run. . . " and he did have many tests done. When we were done, he referred me to a fibromyalgia research clinic being conducted by Daniel J. Clauw, MD, at Georgetown University. They found I had "all eighteen and then some" of the major points. My physician from the Air Force, Dr. Frank R. Lecocq, where I had spent three months hospitalized at Wilford Hall Hospital, San Antonio, Texas, (either 1964 or 1965) had remained in touch with me after we were both discharged from the military; ultimately, he went on to teach at Duke University Medical School until his untimely death from a heart attack on the tennis courts one Saturday. He had spoken to me on the phone that morning and I told him he sounded "tired"; I had no idea he would die later that day and I would never get to speak to him again. * Dr. Lecocq had taught me the importance of finding a physician who would "listen to" me. I've learned what rare gems these skills are in the field of medicine today.

Now, I had a firm diagnosis of something which made sense instead of the long documented, "adrenal hyperplasia, androgenic type, with psychoneurotic reaction". Ultimately, I had that misdiagnosis corrected and revised to the current diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. All of thanks to your very informative book.

This book is a "must read" if you haven't read any books about fibrositis/fibromyalgia. It is a great place to start with information still valid today. The word fibromyalgia wasn't used then.

Thank you, Dr. Davidson, for your book and for giving me the information I needed to help me keep moving forward with living and setting goals for a future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Older, but clearer
I have read newer books on chronic muscle pain and Fibromaylagia, and they get very contorted in their interpretations. Rightfully so, these are extremely frustrating conditions with no simple solutions, so it is easy to see why people want to grab on to any tangible explanation they can find for pain and fatigue.
Davidson lays these group of problems out in a very clear, uncluttered manner. You won't read this book and think "it's all in my head," nor will you read hypothesis after hypothesis about causes of these problems. You'll find clear explanations about how brain and body interact to cause a lot of pain.
Not an overwhelming amount of complicated information, but basic ways to help yourself starting now, and to see results right away if you are determined.

This is a useful book because it is so clean and concise. He presents a simple program, uses good examples from his practice. What you need to apply his program is a certain level of insight on your own responses to stress and pain, and the determination to make time and concentrate on making some alterations in your life. (relaxing and fun, stretching, exercise, various forms of stress relief).

You won't be put off by this book unless you wanted a complicated, medical explanation of some as yet unknown pathology causing your discomfort. That's not available and may never be, so you might as well start helping yourself. ... Read more

Description:
The physical dimensions of five contemporary action figures were measured and compared to their original counterparts to determine whether their physiques have become more muscular from their original designs. The circumferences of the neck, chest, arm, forearm, waist, thigh, and calf were measured three separate times using a Scale Master II model 6325. The mean score was then used in subsequent analyses. Except for the waist, it was determined that the body parts of current action figures were significantly larger when compared to those of their original counterparts. The results of this study indicate that action figures have become more muscular and larger over the last 25 years. Furthermore, the increase in action figure dimensions may contribute to the multifactoral development of an idealized body type that focuses on a lean, muscular physique. This occurrence may particularly influence the perceptions of preadolescent males. ... Read more

Product Description
This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Communication Disorders, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
A fundamental problem for those interested in human communication is to determine how ideas and the various units of language structure are communicated through speaking. The physiological concepts involved in the control of muscle contraction and movement are theoretically distant from the processing levels and units postulated to exist in language production models. A review of the literature on adult speakers suggests that they engage complex, parallel processes involving many units, including sentence, phrase, syllable, and phoneme levels. Infants must develop multilayered interactions among language and motor systems. This discussion describes recent studies of speech motor performance relative to varying linguistic goals during the childhood, teenage, and young adult years. Studies of the developing interactions between speech motor and language systems reveal both qualitative and quantitative differences between the developing and the mature systems. These studies provide an experimental basis for a more comprehensive theoretical account of how mappings between units of language and units of action are formed and how they function. Learning outcomes: Readers will be able to: (1) understand the theoretical differences between models of speech motor control and models of language processing, as well as the nature of the concepts used in the two different kinds of models, (2) explain the concept of coarticulation and state why this phenomenon has confounded attempts to determine the role of linguistic units, such as syllables and phonemes, in speech production, (3) describe the development of speech motor performance skills and specify quantitative and qualitative differences between speech motor performance in children and adults, and (4) describe experimental methods that allow scientists to study speech and limb motor control, as well as compare units of action used to study non-speech and speech movements. ...
