Ischemic heart disease and cardiac arrhythmic disorders are among the most commonly seen and complex problems for the cardiologist. State of the art management of these disorders by the cardiology clinician demands a current knowledge of a vast amount of translational research in the pathophysiology of these disorders as well as recent advances and issues in pharmacologic and interventional therapies. This volume provides expert reviews and assessment of the most recent clinical research and on current trends in management.

Key topics covered include the risk stratification of sudden cardiac death; the fast-evolving role of PCI; predictors of outcomes in chronic ischemic heart disease; catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation; and percutaneous treatment of valvular heart disease; and numerous others. Reviews include assessment of emerging data and indications of likely key advances with significant impact on clinical practice in the near future.

This volume is a must-have for every cardiologist needing to be fully current on recent advances in ischemic heart disease and arrhythmic disorders. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Myocardial ischemia results from a reduction in coronary blood flow to the working myocardium, which leads to a corresponding decrease in oxygen delivery to the heart. This book reviews the pathophysiology of myocardial ischemia as well as advancements that are being made to enable diagnosis of this disease in the early stages. The authors of this book also discuss current evidence about cardiac biomarkers in patients on hemodialysis (HD), with emphasis on two emerging biomarkers, cTn and BNPs. Furthermore, potential roles for these markers to be incorporated into future diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for myocardial ischemia in HD patients is analysed. Additionally, this book focuses on the post-MI biochemical, cellular and tissue-level changes that ultimately result in hypertrophy, dilatation, and heart failure and examines the ways in which those changes affect susceptibility to ventricular arrhythmias. Finally, this book provides an overview of the clinical application status and limitations of current treatment of myocardial ischemia, future technologies under development, and results of pre-clinical studies using animal models.Current therapeutic regiments also address the long-term effects of MI, including management of cardiac remodelling and recurrent ischemia. Medical therapies such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, beta-adrenergic blockers and other agents continue to show promise in this regard. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER BOUGHT !
I am an Assisstant Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cairo University. My sub-speciality is surgery for ischemic heart disease. I have drowned in the medical literature for the last ten years and it notable to mention that ischemic heart management has been increasingly dynamic in the last few years and such a textbook was always lacking.
This book is a piece of art . The subjects are covered by Masters , comprehensively written and beautifully illustrated . I think it is a jewel that must be owned by anyone interested in the subject wether surgeon or cardiologist .
My only concern is that it would become outdated and I plea to the editors to continuously launch updated editions ( every three years for example ). ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book is about the unique ability of the heart to protect itself against the serious consequences of an abrupt reduction in blood flow to the myocardium - a phenomenon which is switched on by stress and termed myocardial preconditioning. This volume describes the main features and characteristics of preconditioning, with respect to the time-course of the protective effect of the phenomenon (first and second windows) and the different sequelae of myocardial ischaemia against which it protects, such as myocardial injury, arrhythmias and contractile dysfunction. The proposed mechanisms underlying the fascinating form of cardioprotection are discussed. Among these are the role of endogenous labile mediators, receptor-linked G proteins, ATP-sensitive potassium channels and protein kinase C activation. ... Read more
