Product Description

From the author: Objective: We estimated the rate of first-time hospital admission over 10 years with alcohol-related medical problems among a large national sample of patients with diagnosed alcohol abuse disorders. Method: We identified a nationwide cohort of all patients (N = 46,680) discharged in 1980 from all Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers with alcohol-related diagnoses. Two comparison cohorts also were identified: patients with musculoskeletal disorders (N = 18,231) and a random sample of nonalcoholic patients (N = 45,204). Using secondary databases, ICD-9-CM coded diagnostic information was collected for all VA inpatient admissions these patients experienced over the decade following their index hospitalizations. Admission rates within age strata and age/race standardized rates were computed. Adjusted rate ratios were estimated using Poisson regression. Results: Alcoholic patients were at substantial risk of admission for multiple medical disorders. Admission rates varied for patients of different ages. Those who were between 50 and 59 years of age during their index hospital stay were at the highest risk of admission with an alcohol-related medical disease over the subsequent decade. Conclusions: The admission rates for these medical disorders among alcoholic patients provide an important baseline estimate of individual patients' risk profiles and may help providers set priorities among diagnostic tests. (J. Stud. Alcohol 59: 89-96, 1998)

From the supplier: Alcohol abuse is known to be associated with diseases of almost every major organ system. There is considerable evidence that excessive alcohol consumption causes certain types of cancer in organs directly exposed to alcohol. A study found that individuals who were at a greater risk were between the ages of 50 and 59. Hospitalization records of these patients provides an estimate of patients' risk profiles and may help physicians develop appropriate diagnostic procedures and treatments.

Product Description
There are many health disorders that are related to the functioning of the nervous system, which is comprised of sensory, motor and autonomic nerves. The “Involuntary Nervous System”, is especially vulnerable to imbalances within it that can occur due to hormone imbalances, vitamin deficiencies, emotional and mental disorders and nervous system, spinal cord and brain abnormalities.

In this approximately 23,105 word e-book, I have compiled a number of responses I made to fellow patients, experiencing nervous system related health disorders, such as peripheral neuropathies, myopathies (neuromuscular problems) and nervous system diseases. These responses, which are presented as well-informed layperson opinions, include my personal experiences with nervous system symptoms as related to my thyroid disease, peripheral neuropathies, myopathy, Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome and vitamin deficiency diagnoses.

An important aspect of online symptom searches that I mention in several opinions I include in this e-book is on the subject of “cyberchondria” (also called “surf diagnosis induced anxiety”) , a serious anxiety reaction that can occur in patients who do not understand the importance of balanced medical searches, on reputable sources.

It is my hope that these 77 short, individual opinion-posts (averaging 300 words each) will prove to be beneficial to readers. – By: Jim Lowrance (veteran health writer)

Product Description
The cholesterol lowering drugs known as statins are of proven benefit for some groups of people for the prevention of heart attacks and stroke, but statins also have a dark side.

Tens of thousands of people have been victims of a huge array of statin drugs side effects, ranging from permanent cognitive dysfunction and severe personality change to disabilities from permanent peripheral neuropathy, permanent myopathy and chronic muscular degeneration.

It has recently been reported that muscle pain cases frequently become permanent and many neurologists now regard statin neuropathy as predictably resistant to traditional treatment.

When statins were first marketed there was seemingly no awareness of possible mitochondrial DNA effect or the importance of glial cell cholesterol to cognitive function and little or no concern that to inhibit cholesterol means to interrupt its pathway shared by both CoQ10 and dolichols and many other vital substances. Nor was it known that statins are powerful anti-inflammatory agents, the fundamental reason for their benefit in cardiovascular risk.

The outmoded concept of looking at cholesterol numbers as a predictor of cardiovascular risk is increasingly being dismissed as studies point to cholesterol levels as being seemingly irrelevant to the process of atherosclerosis.

In addition to the crisis of thousands of people disabled by statin associated neuro-muscular problems is the fact that many physicians still remain unaware that statins can even do this.

Then there is the crisis of the growing trend of the insurance industry to use cholesterol levels as a reason to deny health care coverage or life insurance coverage. Some employers even require cholesterol levels to be below a certain number as a condition of employment. Plus the crisis of patients being forced into taking a statin because not to do so would result in having to find a new doctor.

The Statin Damage Crisis looks at how statins work, the importance of cholesterol in the body, inflammation and atherosclerosis, anti-inflammatory alternatives to statins, serious side effects of statins, and dietary supplements of possible benefit to those taking statins or that were forced to stop taking a statin due to unpleasant and even disabling side effects.

Sections of The Statin Damage Crisis were previously published in Statin Drugs Side Effects and Lipitor, Thief of Memory also by Duane Graveline MD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Damage Crisis Is Right
I have read several books on statin drugs. The two best are "Fat and Cholesterol Are Good For You," by Uffe Ravnskov and "The Statin Damage Crisis," by Duane Graveline. What I especially appreciated about Graveline's book is the specific instructions he gives concerning diet and supplements. Having read many books on the subject of diet, there are many conflicting viewpoints presented. Some diets are totally unhealthy. It takes wisdom from God to know which diets are good ones and which are a bunch of unhealthy hype. My favorite book on diet is "Metabolic Typing Diet," by William Wolcott. The premise of the book is that different metabolic types need differing amounts of fats, proteins and carbohydrates.

Another appealing feature of Graveline's book is the way he thoroughly explains the way statins work and how they deplete various essential nutrients in the body, such as CoQ10 and dolichols. He gives a thorough explanation ofthe role inflammation plays in heart disease and also details statin's role in reducing inflammation. He gives detailed information on less toxic alternatives than statins to reducing inflammation in the body.

Cholesterol is brain food and since the proteins that carry cholesterol are to large to pass the blood brain barrier, the brain must depend on its own cholesterol synthesis, which the glial cells provide. Without abundant supplies of cholesterol, normal brain synaptic function can not occur. The glial cells of the brain are just as sensitive to the effects of cholesterol reduction from statin drug use as any other part of the body. Not just the brain, but every part of our bodies need adequate amounts of cholesterol to function properly. He thoroughly discusses the disease processes and nasty side affects that disrupted cholesterol levels can cause.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Author Has It Right, But Fails to Deliver A Convincing Message.
The author, Dr. Duane Graveline, correctly assesses the impact of statin drugs on the body, but fails to provide a detailed scientific review of the evidence. As a scientist, I would have appreciated a more comprehensive evaluation of the published literature cited in this work.Instead, Dr. Graveline writes to inform the lay person, providing a cursory review of statin drug action in the body by highlighting toxic and beneficial effects. While he is "right on" with the books message, he fails to provide a convincing message to the audience he needs to reach, the prescribing doctors. For a more thorough handing of this subject, I recommend several of the sources cited by this work, including those by Dr. Kilmer S. McCully and Dr. Uffe Ravnskov, Ph.D..

5-0 out of 5 stars never took them, and never will
I have never taken statins, as I avoid ALL perscription drugs except for the occasional truly needed anti-biotic.
A healthy body does not need drugs. Concentrate on health through diet. This book explains how damaging statins can be, I recommend it to all who think they "need" a statin to prevent heart disease...what a sick joke on the uninformed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shocking
My only criticism of this book is that it could use a good editor, but it is self published.

That said, how can I explain what it feels like to have a book make you cry - with relief! My mom was on a statin (Provacol) for 3-4 years before she died. None of us could understand what was happening to her. After starting the drug, she was ever more forgetful, irritable, uncooperative, depressed and picking fights. This was so not her! None of us connected the dots.

Then a few years ago I was put on the minimal dose of Lipitor when in my late 50's just because of family history of heart attack. My cholesterol was normal. I became progressively more forgetful, felt a loss of strength, developed quite a difficulty with night driving, began to feel uncoordinated. My somewhat troublesome right knee really escalated in pain and other joints started to hurt to the point that I did not want to walk any distance. Occasionally I was having trouble swallowing during dinner and then I started losing the feeling in my right small toe. I do not have diabetes. What's important to know here is this was all VERYgradual, so I never associated one thing with the other. I could not believe how OLD I felt @ 61.

I stumbled on Graveline's book after reading a series of other very eye opening books. (Gary Taubes "Good Calories, Bad Calories, Dr. Malcolm Kendrick's "The Great Cholesterol Con", "The Modern Nutritional Disease: heart disease. stroke. type 2 diabetes, obesity and cancer by Ottoboni and Ottoboni, and "Trick and Treat by Barry Groves) They were a wealth of information about statins and their dark side that you never hear about. I found every one of my symptoms and all of my mother's listed as side effects of statins, even on low doses. The most scary thing is that these more subtle symptoms are rarely recognized by family physicians as having anything to do with statin use. There is even excellent evidence that having a cholesterol level that is pushed too low can greatly increase risk of stroke and mortality from a heart attack.

Read his story and you will be shocked at how much resistance he met with, despite his own medical degree, as far as people believing him that his horrible experiences were the result of taking Lipitor. Now there are several books out that are lifting the veil of secrecy that the Phama industry has been hoping you would never learn, since these drugs generate Billions - yes that's right - Billions of dollars in pure profit.

Dr. Graveline has become my hero.

5-0 out of 5 stars missjanie
Dr. Graveline tells it like it is. I had searched for a long while to find the truth about the Statins. The #of people suffering debilitating problems from these cholesterol lowering meds is quickly increasing. My mom-in-law is deteriorating rapidly. I hope that many will read this book.
Thank you Amazon for letting me offer my opinion. ... Read more

Product Description
If you are on a statin drug or are thinking of going on a statin, this fully referenced book, Statin Drug Side Effects, is a "must read" for you.

The unacceptable legacy of statin drug use at today's high doses is a trail of chronic aches and pains, numbness, weakness, confusion, fatigue, shortness of breath and even heart failure in hordes of unsuspecting victims.

Only by knowing this information, and in consultation with your healthcare professional, can you make an informed decision about your health care.

If you are a user of Vytorin, Lipitor, Zocor, Crestor, Mevacor, Pravachol or Lescol you must read this book. Most of the statin side effects I discuss are unknown to your busy doctor.

Although knowledgeable about muscle and liver problems, few have heard of statin amnesia and other forms of memory dysfunction and fewer still associate hostility, aggression and profound depression as statin related.

As a former astronaut, aerospace medical research scientist, flight surgeon and family doctor, I was appalled by the lack of information in the medical community on the full range of side effects of the statin drugs.

This book is a comprehensive reference source and summary of side effects of statin drugs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you, or anyone you know, takes a statin, this book is a must read.
Not once, but twice, in ten years, I was talked into taking a statin. Each time, I had side effects; unfortunately the side effects from the second drug appear to be permanent, and are debilitating. Following the second episode, I discovered Dr. Graveline's website, [...], and found his books, as well as some other excellent related books written by other physicians. Informative and easy to understand, Dr. Graveline's books, including this one, opened my eyes to the effects of statins on the mevalonate pathway, a critical reaction necessary for such processes as the production of energy in the body. Reading this, and the other books he has written, I have learned enough to understand that most of the physicians I have talked with about this have no idea about the dark side of these drugs. Many of the side effects, such as memory loss, pain, weakness, and fatigue are often chalked up to "getting older." This book, and the others, provide reasons for the side effects. This his been helpful for me in understanding what has happened to me. I highly recommend it not only for statin victims, but for anyone with "high cholesterol" who is being told to take these drugs, as well as any health care provider who routinely prescribes statins. As we come to understand that cholesterol is not the enemy, this is critical reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars I now hate statins.
I have been whipped and thrashed by the mainstream medical dogma over my cholesterol and I was so thankful to read this book and verify my own convictions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent info to be informed on statins!
I am a health professional who read this book and have recommended it to all my patinets contemplating or currently taking statins. This is the other side of the story that the industry won't tell you and despite many knowing the facts and problems with statins.

5-0 out of 5 stars life-saving book, formerly called "Lipitor Thief of Memory"
After taking statins for several years, my mother-in-law suddenly became very forgetful - repeating the same question four times in less than 15 minutes, forgetting that she had gone shopping or to the doctor that morning, etc. It was quite frightening for all of us.

The battle to persuade my parents-in-law that she needed to stop taking the statins went on for months until, with the help of this book and "The Great Cholesterol Con" by Dr Malcolm Kendrick (don't get the other book by the same name: it's good but boring), they finally agreed that she should stop - just for a few days, mind you - this so-called "medication" (it's clearly just a poison by another name). Within 10 days of coming off simvastatin (aka Zocor), she was noticeably better, but we're still not sure she will recover completely.

I believe these two books helped to save her life - and certainly the quality of her life. Graveline has since published 2 more books on statins, each one covering a different area of damage to body and mind, including DNA.

P.S. I have now mentioned the memory loss aspect to several people I have come across who are taking statins and every one of them has suddenly realized they have been suffering recent memory losses too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up!
Extremely well researched and well documented. How pleasantly revealing to read something other than well intentioned authorities in the mainstream simply parroting what they have been told for years. ... Read more
