From the supplier: Behavioral strategies may be needed along with drug therapy for narcoleptics to control perceived symptoms and enhance their ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs). In a secondary analysis, no significant correlation was found between drug therapy and either subjective symptom ratings or perceptions of ADL performance. The drugs commonly given for narcolepsy are central nervous system stimulants for sleepiness and tricyclic antidepressants for symptoms related to rapid-eye-movement sleep, including sleep paralysis, cataplexy and hypnagogic or hypnopompic hallucinations.

Product Description
Twenty-one-year-old narcoleptic Angel Duet knows her father harbors secrets. He loves and protects her, but his suspicious refusal to discuss her mother s death drives Angel to worship an image created from the little history she does have: her father's sketchy stories and her mother's treasured photography, studies of clouds that have hung in the their foyer for more than twenty years.

When her father's girlfriend moves in, the photographs come down, and Angel's search for truth becomes an obsession. As she struggles to uncover the past and gain control over the narcolepsy that often fogs her world, Angel descends into a dizzying realm of drugs, adultery, and confused desire that further obscures reality.

As Angel begins to expose a history she could never have imagined, she discovers her entire life has been anchored around lies. Accepting the truth, once found, is the key to understanding herself, her family, and her life. To truly awaken, Angel must realize that sometimes the gifts we receive are not what we want--and only in time do we see their worth.

At first glance, Aberrations is the story of a young woman who learns to live with her narcolepsy, and who struggles immensely to understand how her mom died when she was born and to discover who her mother really was. But the debut novel of Penelope Przekop moves insightfully into a whole other dimension, showing the reader how each of us lives a life of aberration, that we each have some kind of stigma or conflict or handicap to overcome. We also discover that having the strength to first seek out the truth and then to live with it can be quite challenging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honesty is such a lonely word....
As Billy Joel once said, "Honesty is such a lonely word".Aberrations is a book which brought this subject to mind.It speaks to a desire which all humanity shares: we just want someone to be honest with us.Angel Duet is a character who is achingly human: passionate yet flawed, struggling with physical limitations compounded by the damage dishonesty can do to the human heart, and still hoping, ever searching, always hungering to find the truth.I absolutely love Penelope's writing style; she pulled me in from the very first paragraph and made me want to keep reading. This book is at once engaging, entertaining and thought-provoking.Penelope, please keep them coming!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read
This book was recommended by a colleague, another R.N.I'm usually disppointed by authors that try to incorporate medical concepts into a complex story line but this author did not disappoint. The medical concepts were accurate throughout the entire story. The book follows Angel, a young woman afflicted with narcolepsy.Angel is coping with the loss of her mother and dealing with a legacy of family lies she is now determined to uncover.Angel's search for answers leads her to some unlikey discoveries, including most importantly, self-discovery. Igive this book high marks...a great read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Vivid Glance Into Our Own Aberrations
Penelope Przkop's book, Aberrations, is a vivid look into the aberrations in all of us.Angel Duet is a flawed character surrounded by and attracted to other flawed individuals. Rather than painting a picture of life as it should be, Przkop challenges us to cope with life as it is--raw, real, and sometimes uncomfortable to acknowledge. Her blend of literary reflection and suspenseful storyline keeps the reader riveted.I just had to know what Angel Duet's father was hiding!

4-0 out of 5 stars Truth and Lies
What I found most enjoyable about this novel was the exploration of the need for truth. Ms. Przekop makes good use of the idea of being trapped by lies - almost everyone in the novel is harmed by the lies they live with. Watching Angel "wake up" enough to begin to recognize the lies, and become transformed through her journey to truth was enlightening. And I liked that Carla wasn't the "evil stepmom" but the agent for introducing truth. This is a "southern" novel, and some of the vernacular was intrusive for me - I kept being surprised by "thang". Also, I was uncomfortable with Angel's thoughts that a baby would make everything different - that she would have someone to fill that "mother" need. Too many girls have babies to "get" something, instead of "give" something. Fortunately, Angel has a good support system to make sure her baby is well-cared for. My copy has a great set of book club questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
A must read book! I had a hard time putting the book down and what a surprise ending!

Angel's life is certainly not ideal. She has an illness which in many ways disables her. Angel manages to get herself in situations which complicates her life even more. After Angel finds out her life is lies she is determined to find the truth. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Noir with a twist
If you crack open the cover of Narcoleptic Sunday, the new graphic novel by Jeremy Haun and Brian Koschak, you might read the opening pages with a feeling of déjà vu. In the first chapter we are introduced to Jack, a hapless young guy who, after a chance encounter with a gorgeous woman named Jill, has found himself in bed with her. Basking in post-coital bliss, he drifts off to sleep, but eventually he is rudely awakened to the discovery that his beautiful bedmate has been murdered and he is the chief suspect in the crime.

In fairness to the book, the plot device that incites the conflict of this graphic novel was not exactly original when it was famously employed by Frank Miller in his first Sin City story. Still, it's hard to read Narcoleptic Sunday, especially early on, and not find its plot slightly derivative. But what makes this story's take on the classic mystery trope succeed is the unique twist the plot takes in explaining why Jack didn't wake up when Jill was murdered. He wasn't drugged or stone-drunk; he suffers from narcolepsy, as the book's title implies.

This added dimension to the character creates great tension in the early chapters of the story, as Jack seems to fall asleep at the most inopportune times and is nearly always awakened by someone out to kill him. However, as the story presses on and this scenario replays itself through a number of variations, it eventually becomes a bit played out. By the final two chapters of the book it is a welcome change of pace that the momentum the story has gained does not afford Jack the opportunity to drift off for the umpteenth time.

The graphic novel's pace is an issue of concern, as it seems the book was written like it was planned as an eight-issue miniseries and instead released as an original graphic novel. Thus, the cliffhangers that end each chapter tend to lose their effectiveness when the reader can simply turn the page and watch the scene unfold. But overall, the dialogue is solid enough to make the book a decent first effort at writing for Haun, who up to now has primarily been known as an artist for books such as Leading Man or Battle Hymn.

Similarly, Koschak's art starts off very strong yet by the end seems a bit rushed, less detail-oriented than it had been in earlier chapters. In the final chapter, the page layouts switch from the standalone, single-page layouts used throughout the rest of the book to several double-page spreads coming one after the other. This change is a bit confusing at first, especially since the pages are printed with white spaces between them, interrupting the flow of each spread. This problem could be more of a production issue, however, rather than an issue with the art itself, and again had this device been used in a single issue of a comic rather than a chapter in a graphic novel, it might have worked a little better. Koschak's figure work certainly can't be faulted. The beautiful women that populate early chapters of the book set in a strip club are some of the sexiest characters I've seen in comics in quite some time, and the rugged, tough bouncers in these same scenes jump off the page menacingly.

Overall, Narcoleptic Sunday is a decent enough read that will surely please fans of mystery and noir. Despite not having anything necessarily new or inventive to offer plot-wise, it's still an enjoyable thriller with its fair share of suspense and an ending that, even if it doesn't come as a surprise, is executed well. At the very least, it is worth a look to see Koschak's art in its early stages, for his budding talent seems like it will only continue to blossom from here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated, good story.Sexy & violent
Excellent graphic novel with superb illustrations by Brian Koschak and a cool noir story by Jeremy Haun.Beautifully drawn sex scenes and lovingly illustrated beatings with the blood and viscera to make your day. It's sexy, it's violent, and the bad "guy" is a wonderfully disturbing drag queen.Definately worth checking out. ... Product Description
Abstract:Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder affecting the regulation of sleep and wakefulness. It is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, and other rapid eye movement (REM) sleep-associated manifestations (eg, hypnagogic hallucinations and sleep paralysis). The recognition of this disorder is usually delayed by 10 to 15 years, largely because of its protean manifestations, insidious nature, and lack of physician awareness. Delayed diagnosis is associated with poor quality of life, depression, and increased likelihood of accidents. Health care providers should include narcolepsy in the differential diagnosis of patients with excessive sleepiness, chronic fatigue, sleep-disordered breathing, depression, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Narcolepsy is a lifelong disorder that often requires pharmacological treatments, which may include wake-promoting stimulants for excessive sleepiness and γ-hydroxybutyrate (sodium oxybate) and antidepressants for REM sleep-associated manifestations. This article presents a case of a 47-year-old man with long-standing sleepiness and cataplexy who was eventually diagnosed with narcolepsy 30 years after the first onset of symptoms. The presenting manifestations of narcolepsy, diagnostic criteria, and its management are also discussed. ... Read more

Product Description

"Indiana has gloriously revived an obscure Hollywood film of the same name, infused it with eroticism and intrigue - and added Dr. Fu Manchu! The result is a lustrous, laugh-out-loud world of bawd and mayhem; an erudite, charmingly operatic opium den of decadence that seesaws between high brow and low camp and reads as though Cormac McCarthy had rewritten Austin Powers."—Arthur Nersesian

"Ambitious... gonzo social satire." —Publishers Weekly

“A fearless and valuable writer.”—The Washington Post

"[Gary Indiana] is the primary reporter of the underground, the dissociation of cultures, the new behaviors; there is a sense that if you want to understand what has happened in America, you would have to read Gary Indiana. And this newest book is a leap forward."-Michael Silverblatt

"Like The Wizard of Oz meets Naked Lunch... this strange, filthy, uproarious little novel is a riveting read from start to finish."—Boldtype

In the internationally acclaimed author’s first novel since Do Everything in the Dark, Gary Indiana applies his prickly wit, nihilistic vision, and utterly original voice to this side-splitting spin on Fu Manchu.

A mysterious bout of narcolepsy has overtaken the seaside hamlet of Land’s End, a funk endemic to the region since the wreckage a century earlier of the ship the Ardent Somdomite. Inspector Weymouth Smith and unconvinced cohort Dr. Obregon Petrie attempt to thwart Fu Manchu’s latest ploy for world domination while confronting South American Piyas, matching wits with a club-footed ex-Stasi, as well as battling the latest technological crazes and their own drug dependencies.

The Shanghai Gesture is not a genre farce, but a compelling tale that merges the author’s trademark eye for social satire with the beautifully poetic sensibilities of his previous novels.

Among Those That Know, a cabal our story will elucidate in the fullness of time, rumors fluttered that Dr. Obregon Petrie defied the laws of gravity when it suited his caprice.

Gary Indiana is the author of several previous novels: Horse Crazy, Gone Tomorrow, Rent Boy, Resentment, Depraved Indifference, and Do Everything in the Dark, as well as nonfiction works: Three Month Fever: The Andrew Cunanan Story, The 120 Days of Salo, Let It Bleed: Essays 1985–1995, Schwarzenegger Syndrome, and Utopia’s Debris.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun romp that's sure to entertain many a reader
Narcolepsy is a strange disorder. It's stranger when it takes an entire community by storm. "The Shanghai Gesture" is a comedic mystery thriller following Weymoth Smith and Obregon Petrie, who are out to stop the world domination plans of one Fu Manchu. As if one madman was not enough, they also must deal with being behind on the times, and the cravings of their own bodies. "The Shanghai Gesture" is a fun romp that's sure to entertain many a reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars make yourselves at home in the future past
Gary Indiana's first novel since Do Everything in the Dark is a hilarious satire, the most linguistically exuberant work yet from an author already deservedly admired for his astonishing prose. Giddy anachronisms abound in this bawdy tale that features a drug-addicted doctor accompanying a Scotland Yard inspector in pursuit of the fiendish Fu Manchu, who may or may not have something to do with strange occurrences in the seaside town of Land's End, a damp pocket of sleaze that time forgot, whose denizens sleep during the day and emerge for depraved revels come nightfall. Along the way there are all sorts of wonderfully sketched cameos, including Thalidomido the dwarf, Dr. Philidor Wellbutrin, "the fartsome abortionist," and Earl Sludge, the garbage truck driver turned opportunistic necrophiliac. Among the most comically inspired bits are the gossipy phone conversations between the diabolical Fu Manchu and his mercenary employee, the club-footed ex-STASI Roswitha Klebb, whose logistical discussions concerning Fu's campaign for world domination get continually sidetracked by their shared passion for the labyrinthine plot of a Brazilian soap opera. Ribald satire, narcotic phantasmagoria, a gruesome Cronenbergian transformation, mysterious portals in spacetime, corrosive (and hysterical) social commentary all amazingly cohere in a satisfying narrative due to Indiana's prose mastery, simultaneously flamboyant and rigorously controlled. This is a wonderfully unhinged book, Indiana totally unfettered.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Gary Indiana's most recent novel, "The Shanghai Gesture" treads a delicate line between side splitting satire and classical lyricism. The resurrection of Fu Manchu could not be more appropriate as could not be more relevant the plight of those living at "Land's End". The struggle is not about power and it shows, in blaring contrast to conventional story-telling, that it's not about whether there are winners and losers, but rather, everybody always loses... some more than others.
A great read - written in a form that can only be described as eloquent and cutting. ... Read more

This author is a little challenging for two reasons:when you start reading, it becomes apparent that there is a rhythm to his English, that is not quite the English we speak in the States. That's not to say it's not very well written;it's just that if you read a lot, you are expecting the next word to be a certain one, and in this author's writing, the next word isn't there. If I had to guess, I would say the author had exposure to a fair amount of Cockney Rhyming slang, because it has that cadence.

The second thing that makes this challenging, is that it's like reading Ulysses set in the London Underground, although it's leprous in a way that Gaiman's Neverwhere never dreamed.Elliptical, existential, depressing, and more than a little nightmarish, this is a work of literature. It's not just a book;it's a small, terrible pub in the Cotswolds and something out there is eating people, or possibly cutting them up and adding them to the soup.

Reviewers say about books, all the time, "I couldn't put it down."This, you won't be able to put down, because it's like a bad dream that you can't wake up from.I hated the ending.

If you miss this book, you've missed one of the most original entries in the apocalyptic fantasy genre in the last decade.Read it, but definitely not in the dark. ... Read more

Product Description

Raymond Chandler meets Jonathan Lethem in this wickedly entertaining debut featuring Mark Genevich, Narcoleptic Detective

Mark Genevich is a South Boston P.I. with a little problem: he’s narcoleptic, and he suffers from the most severe symptoms, including hypnogogic hallucinations. These waking dreams wreak havoc for a guy who depends on real-life clues to make his living.

Clients haven’t exactly been beating down the door when Mark meets Jennifer Times—daughter of the powerful local D.A. and a contestant on American Star—who walks into his office with an outlandish story about a man who stole her fingers. He awakes from his latest hallucination alone, but on his desk is a manila envelope containing risqué photos of Jennifer. Are the pictures real, and if so, is Mark hunting a blackmailer, or worse?

Wildly imaginative and with a pitch-perfect voice, The Little Sleep is the first in a new series that casts a fresh eye on the rigors of detective work, and introduces a character who has a lot to prove—if only he can stay awake long enough to do it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Sleep Walking, Sleep Talking, Wise Cracking P.I
I enjoyed this story more than I can say and I'd really love to give the book five stars, but there is one coincidence in the book that is just a bit much. Two characters who are unrelated, look too much alike to be believable unless they're twins or mother and daughter and the plot hinges on it. Other than that, this is a fine story, one that kept me reading non-stop.

I'd seen THE LITTLE SLEEP touted on Amazon, so when I saw it on the shelves of my local independent bookstore the other day, I picked it up, read the blurb on the back cover and thought, no way. No way could a writer pull of a narcoleptic, hallucination suffering private investigator. Can't be done. I chuckled, started to put the book back, then stopped. That would be unfair, putting it back without at least reading the first page.

And I was hooked. I got a cup of coffee (don't you just love the bookstores that let you sit with a book and a cuppa joe) and read. A couple hours later I got up to put the book back. Yeah, sometimes I'll read a book for free. I wish I felt bad about it, but I don't. As I was putting the book away a little mom with a couple kids, who'd seen me reading the book asked me if I enjoyed it.

"Very Much," I said.

"Then you should buy it," she said.

Busted, I thought and I took it to the counter and paid for it. Turns out it was a good thing I did, because I took it home and Vesta just loved it to death. So that irritating look-a-like characters notwithstanding, Paul Tremblay is a hit at our house and we're eagerly awaiting P.I. Mark Genevich's next narcoleptic caper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific and original PI novel
The idea of a narcoleptic PI sounded very cutesy to me and I almost skipped the book because of it. If I had I would've missed one of the freshest, most original and funnest PI novels to come around in years. With PI Mark Genevich, Paul Tremblay creates one of the most vulnerable PIs the genre has seen, but Tremblay never condescends to the reader, and instead keeps Genevich very real and a character we care about. The plot owes more than a nod to Chandler's The Big Sleep, and is very cleverly done as layers of Genevich's past are pealed away throughout the course of the book to eventually provide a solution to the case he's working on. I highly recommend this book and hope there are many more Mark Genevich PI novels to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent read
This book was an excellent read. Not your average PI story with plenty of great quips! I hope the author keeps it up!

4-0 out of 5 stars I Dreamed I Dreamed
*The Little Sleep* is an interesting thriller (mystery?) with a gimmick - the narrator is a private investigator who is a narcoleptic (as a result of a head injury) and he frequently falls asleep, or partially asleep, and is prone to hypnagogic dreams and hallucinations. In other words - people can't always tell he is asleep, and he is unable to differentiate between dreams and reality.

Brilliant, eh?

This is a clever and intriguing concept for a novel, and to a certain extent it works. The flawed narrator's humorous, descriptive wisecracks add humor to the story.

Regrettably, like a lot of bestseller type fiction (mysteries, thrillers), the book becomes overly concerned with plot elements that become the essence of the story. What could have been an amazing examination of reality and dreams becomes another stepwise, plot driven whodunit.

For example: The main character is searching for a certain clue (some film), and we have a lengthy description of his searching the entire house, the basement, the backyard, the shed, yada yada yada - and surprise! He finds it! Then he needs to find a projector, then a stepwise description of threading the film through the projector . . . C'mon! Finally, half an eternity later, we find out what is on the film, and there is little suspense or joy because we knew we would discover what was on the film the first time we learned there *was* a film.

So in some respects this book failed to meet its potential; however, I have read there is a sequel in the works. Hopefully there will be more exploration of the nature of narcolepsy, dreams, etc., and less plot driven filler.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, original, and entertaining read
This is the first book I've read by Paul Tremblay, and I must say that I was blown away. Tremblay's writing is smooth and easy to read, and his wittiness shines through each page. In this book we are introduced to Private Investigator Mark Genevich. He has one major problem that hinders his job performance: he has narcolepsy. While I must admit that when I first read the premise of this book it sounded quite far-fetched, I was not disappointed. Genevich is one of the most original characters I have ever come across, and this book will have you laughing, scratching your head, and disturbed at some points. Excellent read! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 3.5) - Truly an Adventure
Deronte' Smith introduces young readers to a most unlikely hero in FANTASTICAL ADVENTURES OF SLEEPY STEVE.The book opens at the beginning of a new school year, and Steve is more nervous than usual because he will be attending a new school where he will make new friends. The morning is a disaster but somehow he manages to make some friends during the bus ride to school. He immediately explains to his new friends that he suffers from a sleep disorder, and as a result, he often falls asleep at the most inopportune times. As readers follow Steve on his day-to-day activities, they will soon discover that he and his group of friends, all of whom don't quite fit in, find excitement in even the most mundane of situations.Whether going to find the school's maintenance man, discovering a first crush, or visiting a museum, the character's vivid imaginations (and Steve falling asleep at just the wrong moment) add humor and interest to the plot.

FANTASTICAL ADVENTURES OF SLEEPY STEVE presents a fun and engaging story while highlighting the power of imagination. The children in the book found excitement in the least expected places.I enjoyed the way the author incorporated Steve's sleep disorder into the story to add humor, but I would have liked a little more emphasis on explaining how the disorder works. I also would have liked more depth in the characters. The plot, filled with humorous antics, is what drives the story, but better characterization would have made readers more invested in the unfolding events and better able to relate to the characters.Overall, FANTASTICAL ADVENTURES OF SLEEPY STEVE is an above average read with lots of laugh-out-loud moments.

very funny, and very well written. Obviously enjoyed by the writer and all readers. I have suggested it to all my family and friends. The characters have been brought to life, as well as every setting in the book. My friends and I agree, it is a great book and can't await more from Deronte Smith.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fantastical Adventures of Sleepy Steve
I truly enjoyed reading this book. The author did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life, describing every detail in it's entirety, which made you feel as if you were in the same room with them. Each chapter ignited such excitement about what was going to happen next, causing me to reflect on my earlier days in elementary school. We all can relate to having at least two friends (bully & brainiac) in our circles while growing up like these, as well as dealing with some of the realities they faced.

I'm looking forward to the next book!Great job Deronte!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sleepy Steve is anything but
The Fantastical Adventures of Sleepy Steve is a fast paced, well written book. I read it in little under 2 hours, but could not put it down once. I know it is for kids under 13, but it put me back in touch with my own childhood, the pranks, the idea that the janitor was a monster, the floating turds....

I recommend this book to all Parents and Children alike and I myself am putting in an early order for book 2.

Great work Deronte, keep them coming.
