Product Description

During the past decade, significant advances have been made in the field of neurodevelopmental disorders, resulting in a considerable impact on conceptualization, diagnostics, and practice. The second edition of Child Neuropsychology: Assessment and Interventions for Neurodevelopmental Disorders brings readers up to speed clearly and authoritatively, offering the latest information on neuroimaging technologies, individual disorders, and effective treatment of children and adolescents.

Starting with the basics of clinical child neuropsychology and functional anatomy, the authors present a transactional framework for assessment, diagnosis, and intervention. The book carefully links structure and function—and behavioral and biological science—for a more nuanced understanding of brain development and of pathologies as varied as pervasive developmental disorders, learning disabilities, neuromotor dysfunction, seizure disorders, and childhood cancers.

This volume features a range of salient features valuable to students as well as novice and seasoned practitioners alike, including:

  • Overview chapters that discuss the effects of biogenic and environmental factors on neurological functioning.
  • New emphasis on multicultural/cross-cultural aspects of neuropsychology and assessment.
  • Brand new chapters on interpretation, neuropsychological assessment process, and report writing.

Product Description

Short-term or working memory - the capacity to hold and manipulate information mentally over brief periods of time - plays an important role in supporting a wide range of everyday activities, particularly in childhood. Children with weak working memory skills often struggle in key areas of learning and, given its impact on cognitive abilities, the identification of working memory impairments is a priority for those who work with children with learning disabilities.

Working Memory and Neurodevelopmental Disorders supports clinical assessment and management of working memory deficits by summarising the current theoretical understanding and methods of assessment of working memory. It outlines the working memory profiles of individuals with a range of neurodevelopmental disorders (including Down's syndrome, Williams syndrome, Specific Language Impairment, and ADHD), and identifies useful means of alleviating the anticipated learning difficulties of children with deficits of working memory.

This comprehensive and informative text will appeal to academics and researchers in cognitive psychology, neuropsychology and developmental psychology, and will be useful reading for students in these areas. Educational psychologists will also find this a useful text, as it covers the role of working memory in learning difficulties specific to the classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief Review
This book was very useful. It is a simple handbook and the last person's review was very precise.Good handbook for starting research.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review: Handbook of Neurodevelopmental and Genetic Disorders
The Handbook of Neurodevelopmental and Genetic Disorders in Children, edited by Sam Goldstein Ph.D. and Cecil Reynolds Ph.D. is a well written, in depth discussion of the impact of genetics on the neurodevelopment of children.

The book is divided into three parts. The first addresses the role of neuropsychology in the assessment and treatment of children with neurodevelopmental and genetic disorders. The second part concerns five disorders with genetic etiologies that primarily affect learning and behavior: learning disabilities, ADHD, Tourette syndrome, anxiety disorders and autism. The final part deals with 14 less common disorders which have genetic etiologies and physical/medical manifestations, as well as effects on learning and behavior: Turner Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome, Mucopolysaccharidoses, Noonan Syndrome, Neurofibromatosis, Sickle Cell Disease, Down Syndrome, Klinefelter Syndrome, Phenylketonuria, Rett Syndrome, Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome, Seizure Disorders, Prader-Willi Syndrome and Williams Syndrome. Each of the chapters on specific disorders discusses the current understanding of the genetic etiology of the disorders, behavioral and developmental manifestations, and guides to assessment.

The book will serve the purposes of many people. Those wanting to do research on a disease can find a quick history on the research and the issues which remain outstanding. Those interested in clinical issues can find clear descriptions, diagnostic considerations and treatment recommendations. All will benefit by learning about the genetic bases, incidence and comorbidity of the various diseases. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars child neuropsych
I really did not feel that this book provided anything new. It looks like that information in it are things I have gotten from previous text books. i did not find this a useful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Child Neuropsychology Assessment and Interventions for Neurodevelopmental Disorders
This book was recommended at a conference I recently attended. Dr.'s Ellison and Semrud-Clikeman provide a brief anatamony lesson and up-to-date methods for neuroimaging. They include major neuro developmental disorders and intervention strategies that are helpful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Neuropsychological Bias
The author presents a very biased view of child neuropsychology.
She omits many relevant research findings especially in the area
of neurometrics and presents a very narrow scientific base focusing
on only a few relevant researchers. There are also many errors
with regard to factual information and little cohesiveness in
bringing together research findings. Some of the real pioneers
in neuropsychological research have been omitted.

2-0 out of 5 stars Typos and some inaccuracies
The book has more typos than any text I've ever purchased and includes some important inaccuracies (e.g., Prozac is referred to as an MAOI). Despite these things, the book provides some good general information, but the reader certainly gets the sense that the book was hurriedly thrown together without a good proofread, first.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very in-depth
This book was a nice overview of pediatric neuropsychology, but I found it quite shallow in terms of practical information. I found myself thinking "yeah, I know all that, now get to the meat."

A nice start for the beginner, but don't buy this thinking that you will get details of how to actually do pediatric neuropsychology. ... Read more

Product Description
Until recently, genetic, neuroanatomical, and psychological investigations on neurodevelopmental disorders were carried out independently. Now, tremendous advances across all disciplines have brought us toward a new scientific frontier: the integration of molecular genetics with a developmental cognitive neuroscience. The goal is to understand the basic mechanisms by which genes and environmental processes contribute to the development of specific structures and regions of the brain. This handbook-style volume explores these advances from the perspective of developmental disorders in children. Research on children with known genetic disorders offers insights into the genetic mechanisms that underlie neural development and organization, as expressed in variations in cognitive profiles. The contributions provide in-depth analyses of a broad range of neurodevelopmental disorders, including those resulting from whole chromosome defects (Down and Turner syndromes), those related to defects in a single gene (fragile-X syndrome) or a small number of genes (Williams syndrome), and complex genetic disorders (dyslexia, autism). Contributors from the fields of teratology and brain injury provide additional perspectives.Contributors: Jane Adams, Marcia A. Barnes, Simon Baron-Cohen, Elizabeth Bates, Margaret L. Description:
Although children with neurodevelopmental disorders frequently present with reduced short-term memory functioning, the relationship between perisylvian morphology and verbal short-term memory functioning has received limited attention. Thus, examining this relationship in children with neurodevelopmental disorders was the focus of this exploratory study. Results suggested leftward asymmetry in the temporal bank of the planum temporale is related to better coding and storage of semantic material. In contrast, parietal bank morphology is related to coding and storage of phonological material, and presence of an extra gyrus in the parietal region is associated with reduced phonological working memory. Data also supported a relationship between pars triangularis morphology and verbal short-term memory functioning, but this is not material-specific. ... Read more

Product Description
Developmental disorders are often studied as either independent research groups or as clinical case presentations; these approaches are rarely combined. This book directly compares cognitive and social functioning in three developmental disorders: Williams syndrome (WS), Down syndrome (DS) and autism (AS), from both a research and a clinical perspective. This unique approach provides new insights into cognitive functioning within WS, DS and AS, including: attention; memory; learning and processing styles; verbal abilities; spatial skills and reasoning. New insights are also provided into how WS, DS and AS view the world from a social perspective, including: their ability to read emotions; their motivational drive toward social interaction; and their 'Theory of Mind', or their ability to understand other people's behaviours based on underlying desires, emotions, and thoughts. Findings also highlight within-syndrome variability in cognitive and social functions in WS, which was previously thought to have a homogenous cognitive profile. The book is a valuable resource for researchers, as well as health and education professionals. ... Read more
