Product Description
Learning, Coping, Living sensitively describes a compelling struggle against anxiety dating back to early childhood. Once the author was seen as 'nervous' by physicians and family and increasing neurological symptoms were mischaracterized misfiled. The book chronicles the author's growing confidence, self-esteem and assertiveness, which were keys that unlocked the correct diagnosis and treatment of her dystonia.Bette Levine then took one more forward step into advocacy. Advocacy takes others along a shared path and replaces helplessness with knowledge and power. This book is part of that advocacy and will inspire anyone coping with physical or emotional adversity.Joyce S. Garber, M.D.President-ElectOnondaga County Medical SocietySyracuse, NY ... Read more

Product Description
A special-needs guide that “comes to the rescue”( Carol Stock Kranowitz, author of The Out-of-Sync Child) of those who struggle with an increasingly common condition.

Millions of children suffer from Nonverbal Learning Disorder, a neurological deficit that prevents them from understanding nonverbal cues like tone of voice and facial expressions. Though they can be exceptionally bright and articulate, these children often have difficulty in social situations, and can become depressed, withdrawn, or anxious.

In this revised edition, Rondalyn Varney Whitney— a pediatric occupational therapist and the parent of a child with NLD—offers practical solutions, the latest information, and all-new activities that will help parents put their child on the path to a happy, fulfilling life.

Topics include:

• Getting a diagnosis

• Developing a treatment plan

• Helping your child make friends

• Dealing with setbacks ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Should not be the first book you buy about NLD
Please do yourself a favor and find a copy of this book at a store or library and page through it for more than a couple of seconds before purchasing it.Although it's well-written, the book uses only ONE very specific example of a child with Nonverbal Learning Disorder (throughout the book). If your child has recently been diagnosed with NLD this book will *not* provide you with a good overview of different types of children with the disorder.

Whitney's book does have a nice section on what NLD is and how it affects the brain. The interspersed charts and bulleted lists are great; but read a little past those and see if this is a good fit for your situation.

For parents new to the world of NLD a much better book, in my opinion, is, Helping a Child With Nonverbal Learning Disorder or Asperger's Disorder: A Parent's Guide (Parents Guide) by Kathryn Stewart. You will be able to find your child in this book.It is my go-to-guide for NLD and support/encouragement for family life with our beautiful daughter who has NLD.I also would not recommend "Nonverbal Learning Disorder" by Rondalyn Whitney as a supplement to the other book.It doesn't add anything useful to the conversation.

That being said, if you page through the book by Whitney and recognize your child in the examples, by all means, buy this book.I'm sure it would be a wonderful find for a parent whose child is like the author's son, Zac.If I were an OT and had a kid with NLD I might write a book about my child as well. Can't blame Whitney for that. It's simply that the NLD world is bigger than the one described in her book. If the specifics fit your home and family, then yes, get this book -- if you see something that makes you furrow your brow for a second, put it down and choose another.I won't be purchasing this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for parents
As a professional I've given this book to educators, parents, and healthcare practitioners. It is a great explanation of what at least 80% of these kids are dealing with and gives parents a way to evaluate their kids at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Program That Works
The book is a good starting point to understanding the Brain Balance Program. My son has now finished the program. He was emotional at times with some sensory issues. The Brain Balance initial assessment showed struggles in the classroom I couldn't see.It also showed functional imbalances in his motor skills that I didn't know were present. The skeptic would argue that maybe it wasn't there. If that were the case, then I wouldn't have seen improvement in the areas that Brain Balance found.By bringing my son's weaker side up to more in line with his stronger side, we've seen a large improvement in motor skills.Academically we've had some success as well as he's now over a full grade ahead in math.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are dealing with Asperger's, this book will help
When I read the synopsis of this book and others' reviews, I knew this was the book we needed to help with our son's behavior.Although I knew something was not right for the past three years and suspected Asperger's for the past two, an unexpected and frightening (and unfortunately, accurate) diagnosis of epilepsy a year ago left us at a false end of the line in our search for what was going on with our son. When we got past the initial diagnosis, got his seizures under control and started to breathe again, it was clearer than ever that something was still not right with our cherished son. When the pieces really came together at the beginning of this past summer and we understood that we were dealing with something on the autism spectrum - Asperger's - we were saddened, but not completely shocked.I searched high and low for some inexpensive resources to help us, as pharmaceuticals were not an option for me to give to my son.We did not need to medicate his symptoms, we needed real HELP with the root cause of those symptoms. If you are on the same journey, this book WILL help you.Melillo offers real solutions without the need to medicate your child. It will take a great deal of perseverance and patience, not to mention the cooperation of your child, but it is well worth the investment to buy this book and expend your time putting its strategies into place. Your child can get better and this book will help you yank your child back into a genuine, connected existence.I wish anyone who needs this book well on their journey to wholeness.Take heart - it WILL get better! And buy this book, read it as fast as you can, and get going on doing these brain exercises!

5-0 out of 5 stars Disconnected Kids
This is a must read for educators and parents who work directly with children having various forms/degree of neurological conditions. The numbers of children displaying these sensory-motor-perceptual disorders is increasing annually and educators need to understand this approach/explanation of FDS Functional Disconnected Syndrome. The whole child and body-brain approach through physical activity and nutrition and other interventions makes far more sense than focusing on one symptom at a time withmind controling drugs. The emerging brain research and discoveries of many factors related to FDS is something all educators should become informed about and understand.

Product Description
This groundbreaking volume, written by pioneering clinicians and researchers firmly convinced of the neurobiological underpinnings of ADD in adults, is the first to provide broad coverage of this burgeoning field. Written for professionals who diagnose and treat adults with ADD, it provides information from psychologists and physicians on the most current research and treatment issues regarding our understanding of ADD as a neurobiological disorder. According to the contributors, ADD in adults may be responsible for difficulties ranging from minor attention, memory, and organization problems in well-functioning adults to drug abuse and criminal behavior. A Comprehensive Guide to Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults begins by addressing the history of ADD and the evolution of our understanding of the disorder. The neurobiology of ADD is examined, laying a solid foundation for the clinician to develop a scientific understanding of this complex syndrome. The assessment and differential diagnosis of ADD is explored from the perspectives of a variety of specialists in the field. This includes an exploration of the interrelationships between attention deficit disorder and other neurodevelopmental disabilities that may interact with ADD to affect cognitive functioning, and an examination of the connections between ADD and a host of psychiatric conditions. Also covered is the process of differential diagnosis from a neurological perspective, which will help the non-medically trained clinician better to determine when a complete neurological evaluation seems warranted in the assessment process. Authors examine ADD with and without hyperactivity and describe a wide range of assessment tools that can be useful in developing a full diagnostic picture of different conditions that must be addressed in treating adults with the disorder. A wealth of experience, highly practical suggestions, and an optimistic outlook are the hallmark of the section on treatment. The authors strongly recommend a multifaceted treatment plan combining medication, psychotherapy, and addressing the pervasive self-esteem issues which typically haunt the adult whose condition has gone untreated. Specific treatment issues for Adults with ADD are also discussed. These include:- @BULLET = the development of practical life management skills @BULLET = the difficulties in relationships @BULLET = ADD within the context of marriage and family @BULLET = and higher education and the workplace. The volume concludes with a discussion of the legal implications of the diagnosis of ADD in adults as it pertains to education and employment, the important role of support groups for adults with ADD, and a thought-provoking examination of current and future research including the need for increased public recognition of ADD in adults. A Comprehensive Guide to Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults is a pioneering volume that will bring the most current information available to the attention of those able to help adult ADD sufferers...vocation and rehabilitation counselors, and numerous psychotherapists who recognize symptoms of depression and anxiety, but perhaps overlook the underlying attention deficit disorder. It will stimulate the interdisciplinary research that is the key to increasing knowledge and educate those who can truly make a difference. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A first rate handbook for professionals
While six years have passed since Ms. Nadeau publishedthe "comprehensive guide" it's thorough, relevant coverage of the basic topics/issues in the assessment and treatment of adults with ADD compares favorably to recent works by P. Wender M.d. and T. Brown, Ph.D. Despite a growing list of titles on the bookshelf this book stands out as one of few that offers well researched and systematic reviews of basic etiologic and developmental factors. Several chapters discuss the array of differential diagnostic and treatment issues faced by men and women with ADD and/or multiple disorders.Other chapters provide thoughtful analysis and treatment guidelines for dealing with college and graduate students, while other sections offer thorough coverage of assessment issues and strategies. For those seeking a broad-based, well-researched and accessable reference for treating adults with ADD, Nadeau's "comprehensive Guide" remains one of the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR THE PROFESSIONAL
In A Comprehensive Guide to Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults, Kathleen Nadeau put together one of the most helpful books for the professional working with clients or patients with ADD.Each chapter is written by adifferent specialist about a different issue. All chapters contain currentinformation which makes it an invaluable resource for the professionalworking with ADD clients and patients.I highly recommend it to anyprofessional working with ADD adults and children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for therapists and agencies treating adult ADD
A very well documented and scholarly book. There are chapters onmedications, interventions, career issues, assessment, and special topicsfor women with ADD.Consider buying it for your reference library.

Fewother books offer such a comprehensive guide to identifying, treating, andunderstanding attention deficit in adults.

My only complaint is thatthis book was published in 1995.I'm sure a second addition would be evenmore useful to both the adult with ADD and the practicioners treating it. Still, this is a book you will read enthousiastically, and reference often. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for ADD families
This was recommended by a friend and I was not disapointed. I use it to help understand children that I teach (to make me more effective). I let several people read it who have people with ADD in their family and they found it very helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for parents
My son's teachers had been intimating for years that my son had ADD.I didn't take them seriously until this year - he's now in 2nd grade.I, too, had realized that he was exhibiting some signs/symptoms of ADD (easily distracted, difficult to focus, easily frustrated, impulsive), so I completed the Connor Scale and discussed the findings with his pediatrician. The pediatrician was ready to put my son on prescription medication immediately.Because of the side-effects, my husband and I decided to wait and try other methods of dealing with his symptoms.I ordered some books, so we could learn more - and this book was the best book I ordered. It gives a comprehensive explanation of ADD, which has helped me to become more understanding and patient of my son's behaviors. It's and easy/quick read, and a wonderful resource for any parent of a child with ADD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Mom's coming to grips with ADD in their child
My now 8 year old son has been struggling in school for several years now.His teachers always indicated there was an underlying issue that kept him from being able to focus in class and follow directions. We noticed this at home too; particularly when he would be given several tasks/steps to follow. My husband and I kept telling ourselves that "he has a late birthday so he's a bit immature" or "he's a boy and they're always behind girls".We had his blood tested and found all levels were normal other than a couple of mild food allergies. We eliminated the foods from his diet but still no change in behavior.

Our son is well-behaved, loving, all boy, and smart. We figured that if he could sit and focus so intently on a video game that he could focus in the classroom; but just chose not to because he didn't find it interesting. Finally, now in third grade, we started to notice (as did his teachers) that his self-esteem was really starting to plummet. He even told me that he is the "second dumbest kid in the class".Hearing this broke my heart. He showed no enthusiasm in school and never even wanted to have anyone over to play.He felt inferior.

I sat down with my husband and layed it all out, so to speak. My husband had always been very against the use of medication.I pointed out that I am the one meeting with the teachers and hearing the same information over and over.I also mentioned that I am the one working with our son on his homework every night and the struggles we both felt when doing so.Although, I must point out that my husband recently worked with our son one evening and expressed to me later how frustrating it was.My husband finally relented and said to call the doctor and I did the next day.

Our son was put on the lowest dose of med and the change has been phenomenal! He is actually getting As now and wants to go to school! His teachers said he has even chosen different friends to play with and sit with; no longer the struggling children that tend to be in trouble a lot. He no longer feels on their level.

Ok...to the book...this book is exactly what any parent needs when faced with ADD issues.A very interesting way this author explained how a child feels with ADD is to imagine your television turned on but listening to every channel at the same time. You simply cannot focus on one channel. This really hit home for me.

This book is easy to read and gives many examples of behavior; including check-lists for parents.I would highly recommend this to any parent that has recently been given the ADD diagnosis or even to the parent whom suspects their son or daughter may have ADD issues. The book also covers different medications as well as many misconceptions about ADD.

And to whomever is reading my review, I wish you well! You are your child's #1 advocate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your A.D.D. Child
This was a great book, very helpful.I ordered one for my child's teacher and for his teacher next year so she could be reading it over the summer.I intend to give this book to each new teacher my child has and he is only in second grade.

5-0 out of 5 stars practical and easy to read
After reading this book I feel more prepared to face the day to day challenges living with a child with ADD.This book offered practical ideas and easy to understand information about Attention Deficit Disorder.I have already utilized many of the ideas mentioned in the book.My only concern with this book was the publishing date. This book was published in the 90's.I am aware that a lot of new research has been done since this book was published so the chapter about medication is dated. ... Product Description
Naltrexone is an opiate antagonist drug developed in the 1970s and approved by the FDA in 1984 for opiate and drug abuse treatment. When used at much lower doses in an off-label protocol referred to as low dose naltrexone (LDN), the drug has been shown to halt disease progression in Crohn's disease and certain cancers, to reduce symptoms in multiple sclerosis and autism, and to improve numerous autoimmune and neurodegenerative conditions, including Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Grounded in clinical and scientific research, this book describes the history of naltrexone, its potential therapeutic uses, its effects on the immune system, its pharmacological properties, and how the drug is administered. It also lists fillers and compounding pharmacies, doctors who prescribe LDN, and patient resources, and includes interviews with LDN patients and researchers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for anyone with Cancer or Autoimmune disease
I love this book I have an Autoimmune disease and have been on most all of the standard medicines available. All made me extremely sick, lung collapsed, more pain,
adrenal failure etc. I found a Naturopath and she put me on LDN omg what a relief, I have been on the drug for 6 months and have found my life once again. Before LDN I was ready to retire and move into a nursing home (I am not old enough to retire) I could not function on those other meds.I wanted to just die because to live that way was inhumane. But LDN has changed all that. This book explains what you need to know about the drug.LDN has improved my skin, my hair (which fell out on the methotrexate drugs), reduced the pain, I am losing weight, a mole that turned black before the LDN therapy has completely gone away, cuts and bruises heal quickly and life seems better.I am not cured or completely healed - I still have a disease, I still have problems but compared to how I felt on all those other drugs that were suppressing my immune system I am happy. Plus LDN costs so much less than other drugs and I don't have to go in for monthly blood tests, or deal with horrible side effects. This book can change your life and save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully researched - a jewel!
I started taking Low Dose Naltrexone in early 2009 for my Hepatitis C and within months had tremendous results. My lab results showed a drop in my HCV viral load from over 1,500,000 to 47,000 and my liver enzymes had returned to normal for the first time since my diagnosis in 2002.

It was at this time that I purchased "The Promise of Low Dose Naltrexone" and read it from cover to cover. It enabled me to have a better understanding on how LDN works, particularly on immune disorders, such as Hepatitis B and C:

"In his studies on endogenous opiate, Ian Zagon has found that intermittent blockade of the receptor with low doses of opiate antagonist drugs upregulates production of endogenous opiates.Endogenous opiates such as metenkephalin and beta endorphin regulate homeostasis, immunity, wound healing and cellular removal.

However, persistent blockade of the opiate receptor and persistent elevations of endogenous opiates, particularly metenkephalin, contribute to cell growth.Several studies of hepatic encephalopathy, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C show that higher levels of metenkephalin in the liver are associated with more severe liver damage, cirrhosis, and the development of hepatic encephalopathy.Persistent blockade stimulates cell growth, including cancerous cell growth, whereas intermittent blockade with LDN has an inhibitory effect and restores homeostasis.

Along this line, low dose naltrexone has been shown to offer benefits in hepatic encephalopathy, viral hepatitis, and cholestasis-induced liver injury."

Wonderfully researched and easy to understand, this book is a must for every researcher, physician or for anyone who is interested in learning more about LDN and how it can help most disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lucky Find!
Such texts are greatly needed on the new near-costless, harmless treatments and cures. LDN balances the immune system, whether hyper or hypo. If you suffer from MS, cancer (or a candidate), AIDS, etc. please consider this $1.00 a day miracle.

4-0 out of 5 stars good information for those thinking of LDN
After trying repeatedly to get into a class for LDN and failing I decided to buy this book.It seemed thorough about the treatment and had lots of supporting documentation.I gave it to my GP to get her on board (my naturopath prescribed the LDN.)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Promise of Low Dose Naltrexone--excellent book
A perfect book for the serious minded patient who is researching treatment for immune system mediated diseases. This field is growing so swiftly that this book could already use an update, but it is by far the most detailed and up to date book of its subject. It is understandable by both doctors and their patients.A must-read for those whose chronic illnesses include MS, Crohn's disease and its relatives, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and the major mental illnesses.Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Bipolar Strong" describes it all. Not to be missed.
"Bipolar Strong" is a long awaited, long overdue, compassionate look at Bipolar Disorder as it affects young people and those who care deeply for them. Written in plain language, yet referenced by the most substantive professional and medical groups, as well as the bipolar youth themselves, this is really a 360-degree look at the difficulties and truly effective solutions now available. The author has done a great work through years of dedicated effort in de-mystifying the disorder, and differentiating between others we hear about so often in the media, such as ADD ADHD,major depression, and more. Of course, this is not intended as a substitute for seeking competent and caring physicians and counselors, but during stressful times, such as the holidays, the disorder may be 'triggered', and we are once again confused, sad, hurt, or sometimes even frightened by the depressed or manic/irritable behavior that we are unable to control. "Bipolar Strong" shows how these issues, properly addressed, can become great assets. Definitely worth a read, this author shows genuine respect and provides real hope for people who suffer this disorder, and those around them. Not to be missed. Through education, we find solutions in "Bipolar Strong".

5-0 out of 5 stars good read
This is awesome that someone is finally thinking of listening to young people tell about their experience and wisdom about their own health. and also to adults looking back at their youthful struggles with mood disorders and depression, sharing what they've learned.I also loved the practical clear information about identifying different disorders. I would recommend this book to all teens and people in twenties and thirties, so they might understand so many of their peers that struggle with these challenges. As well as anyone who has ever felt depressed, or who actually has a diagnosed mood disorder of any kind. It has a wealth of helpful tips and hearty support to offer.
