Banishing night terrors ands nightmares
An exelent book on a subject hard to find any decent info

This book helped change my life.
I had suffered from terrible night terrors for decades before finding the answers I needed in this book.I fit the personality characteristics listed and I found the explanations for these characteristics comforting.The relationship section was also quite relevant to my life.But the most valuable part of the book for me was the section on solutions.I had to apply almost all of the important information listed in this chapter (including the information on effective drugs) to my life. This was by no means a ten minute fix.It took a little time, energy and effort but it worked.

Not helpful to alleviate night terrors
If you are looking for a book to help you alleviate night terrors, this is probably not the book to read. The book claims to be a breakthrough program, but it offers very little guidance for alleviating them. The main author, who is a sufferer of night terrors, but not a doctor, goes to great lengths to support his claim that all adult night terrors must be caused by past trauma. It is imperative, he says, that a sufferer recognize that trauma (primarily child abuse) occured and to move on. If the reader doesn't buy into this assertion, then the rest of the book is really not helpful. Convenient Truth

Terry Caffey's account of how and why his family was murdered is really a disappointing and unrealistic story. The reader is left with the nagging question of why he didn't add a chapter about his relationship with his daughter before this all happened. It appears that the evidence that put his daughter in jail proved that it was not her boyfriend alone who murdered her family. And daughters don't decide to murder their parents just because of a boyfriend.

As far as his plea that the boys (who were sentenced first) get life without parole, this appears to be a Christian motivation. But from what I could tell, it was only so his daughter would get a lighter sentence than she would have otherwise. If those boys had gotten the death penalty, she would have gotten life without parole.He actually expects "daddy's little girl," as he endearingly writes several times, to be out of jail. But even before reading those words, I realized that this is "his" account, and it really couldn't be called a true account by anyone else.

I say these things not because I grudge him the right to write what he wants, but I worry that the public will not look at the facts about his daughter in the future since he downplayed her premeditated and physical involvement.Because of his motivations, I think readers will get more facts about the incident by surfing the web. The author's account of his Christian witness in forgiving the boys rings false when he places the blame on them, especially the boyfriend, and not on his daughter, too. The more of us who read this book with its partial truths, the more likely Erin Caffey will be out walking around some day. There are so many inspirational and valuable stories about Christian witness to read, I wish I hadn't wasted my time on Terry Caffey's.

Unlikely forgiveness
It would be impossible to write this book without God's grace. Like others, it was difficult for me to put the book down once started.Can anyone truly imagine the horrors Terry faced?In the usual run of life, we all face problems...some easy and some pretty tough..but nothing like Caffey's. It would be hard enough to lose a family member, a spouse, a friend through an act of murder but to have most of his family gunned down and having to crawl to safety when his home was torched,,nearly unbelievable. Hollywood might conjure up such a story but to know this was non-fiction made it even the more horrific. Confronted with all the distress, it would be easy to identify with Caffey when he thought about ending it all. The book moves from extreme ugliness to a brighter day for all involved... as God made something good from the bad.Did God cause the 'terror?' Hardly!In ways we have difficulty understanding, bad things happen to a lot of good people... evidence we live in a fallen world. Those who love God also know that He makes things better, the promise of Romans 8:28.
We may often find ourselves with hurtful feelings toward others and don't see forgiveness as a possibility. Caffey felt that way; who could blame him? Yet God was in the picture and brought happiness to replace the doom and despair. This account needs to be read by many, as a reminder that even when things are tough, God is there..and He's been there all along.

BOOK REVIEW
TERROR BY NIGHT was purchased as a gift for someone else so I did not read it. However, I had excellent service and assume it is a very worthwhile book to read.

A book you cannot put down
I picked up this book and, utterly unable to tear my eyes from the pages, read it straight through, forgoing dinner and everything else I was so absorbed.

The author, Terry Caffey,lived through the greatest agony imaginable--the brutal murder, not only ofhis much loved wife of many decades, but of his two young sons.In one terrible night, three killers attacked the family and then set fire to the house. They spared no one. In an act of utter callousness, the killers hunted down the youngest son and knifed him to death.

The author himself was shot three times, once in the head. It is a mystery that he even survived those bullets.Even granted that he miraculously lived through the gunfire, how, how did he find the strength, bleeding and desperate, to stagger out of his home, which the killers had left a burning inferno? And then, how did he manage to crawl across underbrush to make it to help?

But the real core of the book is Terry Caffey's tortured realization that the killers who attacked and slaughtered his family were, apparently, led by a member of his own family. I won't say anything more here to spoil the story for you, but the truth is shocking.

It was sheer grace that he could face this person later, and find the grace to forgive andgo on living.

Stake your Dollars goodbye
First off, Beware this is a "choose your story" book.Every few pages you are given a choice Buffy might make.As a big fan of Buffy, I managed to know "What would Buffy Do?" well enough to successfully complete the book in a very short time.I think I read maybe 40 or 50 of the 300 pages.Not what I consider my money's worth.

Night Terrors (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
I think that this book was fantastic to those who are avid loyal Buffy readers and fans it was unputdownable. It is a must read.

Choose your own Buffy
Night Terrors was a great read.It's unfortunate that the Buffy choose your own adventure series only had four books, because this book was a blast.I think there was something like twenty possible endings.It was really fun trying to get the Scoobies out of different situations. I dug the choose your own adventure books as a kid and greatly enjoyed reading a Buffy version.

Alice Henderson is an author to watch.

REVIEW

Night Terrors will always hold a special place in my heart because it's the first Buffy Choose-Your-Own-Adventure ("Stake Your Destiny") book I've successfully completed on my first try.Indeed, one of the aspects that sets this book apart from most others in the series is the wide range of possible endings, ranging from complete success to mediocre survival to outright death.

The core plot of the book is an attempt by a demon, the Night Terror, to take over the bodies of residents of Sunnydale by entering into their dreams.This leads to some really interesting and fun dream sequences with Buffy, and shows us examples of how White Hats like Giles, Joyce, and Angel would be like if evil (of course, this last one we know all too well).

The writing is smooth and the dialogue is appropriately quirky.In addition, crisp action scenes and a well-researched bad guy help keep the plot moving.Definitely one of the better Stake Your Destiny books.

A fun Buffy book
This is a pretty good Buffy book. Not the best but not the worst. I enjoyed the story. A demon named Mare, the Night Terror, takes control of peoples bodies while they're sleeping. After awhile their astrol cord will break and the persons body will go into a coma. My favorite story in this book is when the Mare takes of your, Buffy's, body and she gets banished into the realm of dreams. It's cool to see what the the other characters are dreaming. The other major story in this book is when the Mare takes over Angel's body. This brings out Angelus too. Ethan Rayne is also involved in part of this book. There is also zombies and a mummy. If you are a fan of Buffy then I think you should pick up this book. The Author did a great job keeping the characters true to the show aswell. ... Read more

Night Terrors
Night Terrors is written by Jim Murphy. This book is a collection of short stories. Now Jim Murphy was a digger. He dug graves. He hated those big machines that people started digging with. He like the good, old fashioned, shovel. Now he started digging in his home town, when he was about 14. He worked with a guy who was the best story tellers ever that Jim had heard. But one day it was so cold that they couldn't even get a tiny bit of dirt if the ground. So Jim's boss was forced to get some dynamite to get this one body in the ground. But in the process Jim's boss blew his brains out while Jim hid safely behind a grave stone. Now his boss did love to tell stories about stuff that happened in the grave yard but now since he is dead he didn't anymore. the business started to get slow so Jim was forced to go find work digging somewhere else and everywhere he seemed to get a job he seemed to meet people who told the greatest graveyard stories you have ever heard and he shares them with you throughout the book. He tells stories that were sometimes about werewolves, and some about peoples car breaking down in a place called the slew where they met a crazy old lady and things like that. But you will have to read to find out what happens to Jim when he becomes part of one of those stories.

"Night Terrors" is a collection of twelve short horror stories for teens--well, five short stories told by Digger (the storyteller) and seven chapters that follow his drifter existence down the Atlantic coast. The first chapter, "Digger's Promise," is more of an introduction on how he got into the grave digger profession and received his first promotion before he ever learned to drive. This is a rather amusing tale, in a sick sort of way. Following this, an alternating pattern is set between Digger's life chapters and the stories he's heard over the years, as explained below:

"Just Say Yes" -- Two girls plan on stealing a biology midterm exam as one girl's way of getting the attention of a boy she likes. However, they stumble across a horrible secret of their teacher's in the process. Not too bad, but it's not the best in the bunch. The ending was just the tip of the iceberg.

"Good Night, Jon; Sleep Tight, Jon" -- A couple of guys plan on getting their new "friend" in trouble by involving him in a grave robbing prank, but it backfires on one of them. One of my favorite stories in here; good twist at the end. I especially liked the last sentence.

"Like Father, Like Son" -- A boy breaks into his father's basement office to perform a ceremony that will awaken the Egyptian mummy his archaeologist father keeps there--except he reawakens something else. Fans of Egyptian mythology should like this one since it scratches the surface of ancient rites, but it isn't tedious in a textbook sort of way.

"The Cat's-Eye" -- While cat-sitting for an old lady, two girls snoop around her house and find a closet full of old clothes--only the closet holds something far more fateful for one of the girls. This one has a "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" feel to it.

"Something Always Happens" -- Three guys are stranded in the middle of nowhere when their car dies. One of them goes for help, but he finds more than he wanted in the marshes, as do his friends. Even though the dialogue of the old woman was a little boring, if you read between the lines, you can probably guess the ending ahead of time.

The second to last chapter, "Footprints in the Snow," returns to Digger's point of view, where he deals with the death of a close friend (his boss), who was killed by one of the wolves that lives nearby. Digger, once again, moves and finds himself full circle, back in his hometown. He also notices that the pack of wolves has followed him. In this chapter, he--as well as the reader--learns of his true identity, which is no big surprise really. If you take a close look at the picture on the front cover, you can probably figure it out beforehand.

All of the stories deal with either peer pressure, conspiracies, or pranks, which most young readers can relate to. The various locales--like empty school halls, tomblike basements, foggy cemeteries, or endless closets--create great atmosphere, as do the monsters that are involved: vampires, ghosts, mummies, witches, cannibals, and werewolves. This book is easy to read, fast-paced (I read it one sitting; it's just under 180 pages), and suspenseful without being gratuitously gory. Young horror fans should enjoy this one.

Night Terrors is about a grave digger who goes by the name of "Digger".Digger moves away from his hometown to find other graveyard jobs, and while working at these different jobs, people starttelling him scary stories.

One of the stories in Night Terrors was abouta kid whose dad had a mummy in the basement, and the kid wanted to bring itto life with an Egyptian chant.

Excellent read
Very much enjoyed this book about little known incidents against the Jewish community during the civil rights struggle.Would strongly recommend to anyone who enjoys good historical reading and a great story teller.

Jack Nelson Tells It Like It Was
Terror In The Night is a true story about the Klan's Campaign against the Jews in Mississippi. The Klan wanted to stop the Jewish support for the NAACP and civil rights for Southern blacks. Nelson tells us of two brave FBI agents Rucker and Watts who, with the help of a Klan informant, brings the Klan to it's knees.

The book also brings to light a fascinating sub plot involving the unlikely redemption of one the Klan's' top men in Mississippi.

Fascinating, and true....I was a boy in Meridian, Ms at the time that the events in this book took place, and friends with the two FBI agents' sons. I had no idea .....Thrilling, shocking, and riveting.

Great Book, about real people bad and good
I wanted to read this because my 5th grade teacher was on the wrong path and died in a gunbattle while participating in an attempted bombing.What I got was a story about people's struggles to prevent wrongs and the risks that they took.Right away I wanted to call and thank the parents of a childhood jewish friend for their work.Fabulous!

Stay close to the tour guide
Sue and Eddie are sight seeing in London and enjoy a guided tour of Tower. While there they get lost and is chased by a scary man in a cape. When they escape him, nothing is as it's supposed to be. They get to the hotel by cab but can't pay as they don't have real money, they can't find their parents and the hotel room they lived in is empty. And the caped man is still chasing them.

The story starts okay, then take some weird turns before it ends with some incredible twists. Stine has done it again!

OK book i guess I'd give it a thums up
A Night in Terror Tower was an ok story. Some of it was confusing, it wasn't explained. The story was coinsidental, everything was planned out. Some parts of the book popped out at me and some parts were very boring. You should read this book and see what I'm talking about.

A great read!
A Night in Terror Tower is an amazing little book.With only 129 pages it is more than able to draw in a reader and fuel the imagination long after completion.The story is about two young children in London.They take a tour to the Terror Tower in London.The tour turns sour when they lose their guide and are hunted by the mysterious man in the black cape.The children are suffering from memory loss and nothing seems to be going their way!When the man in the black cape catches them the story takes a major twist, the kids are now in the past!This story is excellent for younger readers and will keep them turning pages for hours.I would recommend this book for anyone ages 8-12, but even adults could enjoy this as a quick night read!The graphic settings and bone chilling details to R. L. Stines books really keep you involved.The story is filled with humor, horror, drama, and action that won't let you sit anywhere but the edge of your seat.

Night Terror Stories of Shadow and Substance

Three sentence summary:There is this kid named Bo and his friend got murdered by a killer doll.So now the killer doll is coming to get him.So then he realizes it was all a dream. The doll is kind of like Chucky.
What I liked most about the book:I liked the part when that girl got her head sliced by the doll.
What I didn't like and why: I didn't like Bo because he is not that cool like me.
My favorite character and why: My favorite character is the killer doll. Why because he kills people and that is cool to me.
The scene,line,or passage that meant something to me and why:
"Hay watch out", said Bo as he took out his shotgun. The killer doll was right behind his friend as he fired a bullet into his head.
What would I say about this book to someone else:It is a great book and you would probaly wet your pants reading it because it is to scary for the reader. So read it and don't wet your pants.
One question I have after reading this book:Why did the killer doll have to die and couldn't the author make Bo a gangster?
My strongest reason for recommending this book:It has action and brings a chill down your spin.So watch out because the killer doll is real! (Don't wet your pants)

Night Terrors, sounds scary doesn't it?Wrong.By the title it sounds like it's the type of book you don't want to read if you get scared easily, but this book isn't scary enough to scare a six year old.It's a collection of short stories that are supposed to frighten you.In addition to being boring many of the stories don't make since.For example "The Monkey's Wedding", about an old lady's son painted a famous picture called "The Monkey'sWedding."The stories most interesting event was when the old lady got a phone call saying here son had been killed, then the picture was mailed to her and the story ended.I can see how this book might be interesting to some people, but wasn't to me.When started reading this book I thought it would be scary, it didn't come close.On the good side this book was well written and had a lot of detail.Some of the stories did interest me but more often than not the stories were a disappointment.I think the author should have put different stories in the book or just changed the title to something that wasn't scary sounding. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone except for parents to read to kids five and under.This book is a disappointment.

A special supermodule in B series
Paired with B4, I rate this as my most favorite module in B series. Not because of its rarity, it is really a quite good adventure. (B9, B11, B12 are also rare modules, B11 & B12 are also good modules, but B9 is not!) Started your journey from Kelvin, you have to fight for goblins, chase for Iron Ring, and eventually, arrive at the Lost Valley of Hutaaka. The module provided a lot of materials to GAZ1 GRAND DUCHY OF KARAMEIKOS, which published one year later and the Gazetteer series brought D&D Campaign into a vast Mystara World in later days. The module is also provide mapsheet and counters for Goblin's War. (like playing war game) Highly recommended! Well, it is quite difficult to acquire an original book now. Night Terrors: When you asolutely, positively have to stay up all night!!
Theresa Dillion and Marc Ciccarone (Editors) have put together two winners, Blood Bound Books and this anthology, "Night Terrors." There are several standouts in this nasty little book that will keep you up all night. Murphy Edwards will have you reconsidering that late night trip to the laundromat to wash a load of jeans and "T's". His story, "Good Samaritan" starts out as a college hook-up and ends with a killer twist. Keep a close eye on Creepy Willy! Bryan Oftedahl's "Trepan" will have you rubbing that little spot at the crown of your head looking for a point of entry. "Little Piggies" is George Orwell on steroids. G. Winston Hyatt will have you ripping through the pages. Harper Hull ends this anthology with a real winner. "Amy Lou's Ice Ream Parlor" is a real gem that leaves you wanting more from Hull and the folks at Blood Bound Books. If you like your stories on the dark side of town, buy this book. In fact, buy two and scare the living hell out of one of your friends.

Good Anthology
I took a chance on this anthology because it looked very promising and with a name like Blood Bound Books I figured it had to be good. Night Terrors is their debut anthology and it didn't disappoint. I can honestly say that I enjoyed the majority of the stories in it. There are a few novice horror writers in it and while you can tell those particular stories are from beginners, they are still entertaining tales. The really standout pieces, to me, were: The Elephant in the Marble, While Gabriel Slept, Tattered Notes Found in a Cheap Motel Room, Somewhere Anywhere, Trepan & Little Piggies.

High Quality and Good Variety
I'll keep it very brief: I like the cover art and layout of the stories. Several shorter pieces are interspersed between the longer ones.I always like to mention a few of my favorites in each anthology I review so here goes: Harper Hull really shook me up with "Amy Lou's Ice Cream Parlor". It was the perfect balance of creepy supernatural horror and realistic characters.Another highlight for me was G. Winston Hyatt's "Little Piggies", which quickly spins into an Orwellian nightmare. Night Terror
Not a bad book. Kept me interested throughout. Has some interesting twists and some tension within the pages. It has about 400 pages so it is a fairly quick read. Also inexpensive as I got this with a buy 3 and get one free deal. It was going for around 7 dollars at the time.

I enjoyed this book. It was a page turner. This is a first time to read this author. I will look for more of her books. A very good thriller.

Amazing softmore effort
This author shows much promise in this page turner. If you like Dean Koontz and Stephen King, you will love Chandler McGrew.

Chandler McGrew's "Night Terror" is a witty and lithe combination of plots that intimately intertwine and play off one another, as well as characters that seem to continually get themselves in deeper and deeper trouble.Just when you think all is lost... Who do you trust in a scary tiny town?
There was a point in the mid to late 1990s when author Mark C. Sumner was just hellishly prolific. Even though he'd written two fabulous adult fantasy westerns in Devil's Tower and Devil's Engine, he made his bones crafting some terrific, atmospheric teen novels. There's THE DARK and DEADLY STRANGER and his excellent vampire trilogy THE PRINCIPAL, THE SUBSTITUTE and THE COACH. And then there's EXTREME ZONE, Sumner's paranoid, rapid-fire sci-fi series.

It begins with NIGHT TERRORS.

Noah Templer was once a star athlete and student. But, of late, unrelenting dreams of having been abducted by aliens and a feeling of being watched have made a mess of his life. He's been kicked off the basketball team and, scholarly, he's been slipping. He's broken up with his girlfriend, who laughed in his face when he confided in her. Now Noah spends much of his time obsessing on UFOs. He thinks he might be going insane.

Kathleen "Harley" Davisidaro has just moved to the unassuming East Coast town of Stone Harbor, with her dad, a contract worker for the military, having just been reassigned to the nearby military base, the Tulley Hill Research Facility. From the start, Harley's had a disquieting feeling about that place, which is jointly ran by the military and a covert intelligence agency called Unit 17. What's more, as she begins attending Stone Harbor High School, Harley runs into a strange boy named Noah, who has a tendency to wig out and go into unsettling trances.

But when Harley's dad mysteriously vanishes, Noah might turn out to be the best person to help her, if she can only get over the sensation that Noah just may be crazy. Too, Harley and Noah must stave off the frightening assaults on their lives. One thing's for sure, there is some seriously eerie stuff going on.

At a brisk 202 pages, NIGHT TERRORS is a quick and riveting read, and will keep you guessing. I appreciate the fact that the book doesn't tame itself down to cater to some kind of young adult sensibility. Indeed, NIGHT TERRORS packs quite a wallop and is fraught with moody tension. I guess it's not too out of line to describe this series as a teen version of the X-Files. Certainly, NIGHT TERRORS unveils its share of sinister conspiracies and shadowy organizations, such as Unit 17 and Legion. The weirdness factor and the science-fiction aspects are there, as well, from weird lights in the sky to the enigmatic man in black to several residents of Stone Harbor who seem to flaunt otherworldy traits. The chapters are alternately narrated from Noah and Harley's respective viewpoints, and Sumner does a very good job of developing their characters and building a connection with the reader.

The pace begins slowly but ominously as Sumner ably sets the stage and establishes the mood. The reader is made quickly aware that something is not quite right with the Tulley Hill Research Facility and with the reclusive, tiny town of Stone Harbor. As the plot thickens and the stakes are escalated, the pace builds to a frenetic clip, until the explosive finale, which takes place in the top secret recesses of Tulley Hill.

However, NIGHT TERRORS is only the first of the Extreme Zone series, which is comprised of eight novels (that I know of). So, it shouldn't be a surprise that the answers sought by Noah and Harley come few and far between. NIGHT TERRORS was first published in 1997, with, I believe, the rest of the novels coming out in '97 and '98. I haven't yet managed to check out the sequels (although, believe me, they're on order!), but if Mark C. Sumner was able to maintain the tension-wracked quality of NIGHT TERRORS in the successive entries, then the EXTREME ZONE series is gonna be one hell of a ride.

By the way, I'm still not quite sure what the term "Extreme Zone" refers to.

The Extreme Zone, Night Terrors, Book 1....
I was at our local Wal-mart when I came across this book. Picking it up and reading the back, I was intrigued by what the book was about so I decided to get it. Boy, am I glad that I did. This series is awesome. M.C. Sumner is a brilliant writer. These books are among my most favorites of all time. If you like your stories with plenty of plot, this is the series for you. I highly recommend 'The Extreme Zone' to all.

Kick-...!
I'm generally not into books, but I picked up this one and couldn't put it down.The plot is unpredictable.Most stories are so predictable, the butler did it right?WRONG!You can never make an acurate guess.I guessed what the story would be like a million times, and none of them even came close.

So buy it and read it, and be ready to read for a long time.

Extreme Zone: Night Terrors
Awesome book. I read it first when I was about 10. I just picked it up today and I still love it, at age 16.

Harley and Noah, the best duo out there.
This is the second time I read this book, it's wonderful. Harley, one ofthe main characters, seems down played at first, because Noah is having thedreams and Noah is going nuts and Noah is losing everything, but in the endSumner wrapps everything up perfectly. Dee, one of the other characters inthe book, is remarkably lighthearted, seeing that she used to date Noah,and now Harley (Kathleen Davisidaro) is getting all the action (Though theydon't even kiss, they just get thrown in a life/death adventure and spend alot of time together). Though Unit 17 and Legion seem kind of ficticiousand sketchy, everything is explained in later books. This book iswonderful, read it. ... Read more

Nights of Terror, Days of Excitement

terror in a small town
Sleep has eluded me since I read this book. I jump at shadows.
Freddie has been eclipsed. Night now comes too soon. Stephen King has some heady competition. I look forward to Drew's next book with anticipation... and dread.

Top-Notch Debut!
If, ten years from now, you want to be able to say "I was a fan before anybody knew who he was," buy this book today. Here's hoping we haven't seen the last battle between Steve Wykoff and Dust!

Very Scary!
Night Terrors is a very fast-paced and frightening novel. The author has a very enjoyable writing style that keeps the pages turning. This book is scary, well written and a lot of fun.

Great horror story
Chris has been fostered at the Crowley boot camp since he turned seven.At sixteen, he is finally ready to run away because his foster father is an abusive person who works Chris and the other children to the point of exhaustion.All he has left of his mother is a picture of her when she somehow communicates with him when he is troubled; her advice is always accurate.When he reaches Caldera New Mexico, she no longer transmits to him.

Caldera is a strange and frightening city that has an alarming growth rate.Julian, an environmentalist for Project Earth, has scientific proof that alarms him.At the same time psychiatrist Saney finds evidence that frightens her as she sees too many people suffering from bad dreams and psychoses than any other place she has encountered.These two individuals along with Chris connect with one another to find the cause of the problems at Caldera and attempt to stop them if they can even if they are supernatural in nature.

Anyone who likes a supernatural thriller similar to the "Left Behind" series will want to read THE APOSTATE.Unlike the "Left Behind" series this novel is more subtle and the supernatural elements more covert.The story line is very entertaining and enriching while the protagonists are people like the neighbors next door, caring and helpful when called upon in need.

Delicious fun and I want more!
The face on the cover gives me the shivers. The words within gave me sweating fear.

Night Terrors is such a visual book. It begs for film adaptation. Imagine Fred Krueger more whacked out than the norm and then make him exist only in your lousy dreams. Throw him into a town of crummy folks who don't have the most pleasant of thoughts. Imagine that and you only get Fred Krueger in need of meds...you don't get Drew William's own Dust. I will let you discover Dust on your own when you read Night Terrors and later dream.Dust is the villain of Night Terrors who, thanks to meds gone mad, is enabled to be given strength.

I love Night Terrors! I've been jumping at shadows and it is delicious fun! It doesn't hurt that the premise behind the book was one that intrigued me and made me think.

A merely adequate imprint, but the stories themselves are outstanding: understated, ironic, and delightfully dark. Recommended
Ghosts and haunted houses, dying Civil War soldiers and attacking beasts, things unseen and terrors imagined: this volume collects 51 of Ambrose Bierce's short stories. It's not an imprint which you pick up for its own sake, but rather because it's the Bierce collection closest at hand. The introduction is adequate but awkwardly written and hardly comprehensive; the collection itself is not all of Bierce's short fiction, and the arrangement is adequate--never poor or jarring, and sometimes aiding the flow between stories. It isn't a volume that I recommend outright, but if it does happen to be the Bierce collection closest at hand, then do pick it up--because Bierce is worth reading. He's a deceptively simple writer: his tone is straightforward and his penchant for twist endings can grow predictable (and, the danger of a collection, may grow repetitive as well), but in that straightforwardness hides understatement. Dry wit, insightful irony, startling human perception, and no lack of horror--some human, some otherworldly, all of it crossing the boundary between the two in the impact it has on those involved--are all presented in a bare style that mimics simplicity but is actually skillful subtlety. Bierce's dark humor is delightful, and his horror is both intriguing and chilling, both as fearful pleasure and something outright unsettling.

For all of this, Bierce is not my new favorite short fiction author, in part because I do find his twist endings repeditive, in part because not all of his themes--family issues and human folly, ghosts and the Civil War--appeal to my own personal interests. But his voice and style do appeal to me, and as they are short, finely crafted, and often intriguing, I found Bierce's stories both addicting and supremely satisfying, and enjoyed this sampling of his short fiction. "An Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge," "An Imperfect Conflagration," and "The Damned Thing" were my favorites, but few stories disappointed me. Give or take this specific collection, but I recommend Bierce--to fans of horror and of short fiction, for he excelled at both.

One of the Best Victorian Ghost Story Authors Out There!
I have recently been on a Victorian and Edwardian ghost story binge.I bought many of the Wordsworth editions.This is by far one of my very favorites.Many say M.R. James is the best ghost story writer out there, and while he is good, I really do prefer the Ambrose Bierce stories.You won't be disappointed in this collection.One comment on the quality of the paperback...the paper is cheaper and the bindings tend to split at the bottom with normal reading.Just a note if you are particular on your binding/cover qualities.Right now, this seems to be one of the only publishing houses seriously releasing these stories and the price is in accordance with the quality.

51 Brilliantly Cynical and Gruesome Tales
Wordsworth Editions, published in London, has a wonderful thing going with its current series entitled "Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural," bringing back into print short-story collections and full-length novels from such relatively unknown authors as Gertrude Atherton, Edith Nesbit, D.K. Broster, Marjorie Bowen, May Sinclair and Dennis Wheatley. The imprint's collection of horror tales from Ohio-born Ambrose Bierce is a very satisfying and generous one, gathering 51 of the author's more shuddery pieces, out of the 90 or so from his complete oeuvre. (Bierce never wrote any longer pieces, calling the novel, in typically cynical fashion, "a short story padded.") Bierce, who was born in 1842 and died mysteriously, most likely in Mexico, around 1914, wrote tales that have been elsewhere divided into three categories: Tales of Horror, Tall Tales and Tales of the Civil War, in which he fought with distinction on the Union side. But these three loose categories don't tell the full story; his most famous short piece, for example, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," while certainly being a tale of war, is also undeniably a psychological horror story. Indeed, a reader of this volume will quickly discern at least eight types of Bierce tales therein; more on that in a moment. All the stories in this collection display an extremely fine polish as regards writing technique (some of the tales may even be accused of being overwritten) and a cynical, often merciless worldview. The author was not nicknamed "Bitter Bierce" for nothing, and there is absolutely no way for the reader to predict whether or not any character, be it man, woman or child, will suffer a horrible fate. As no less a critic than H.P. Lovecraft wrote of Bierce's writing, in his essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature": "[There is in it] a rare strain of sardonic comedy and graveyard humour, and a kind of delight in images of cruelty and tantalising disappointment." And as David Stuart Davies mentions, in his well-written and informative intro to this edition, "His stories invariably turn on these strange and often heart-stopping twists of fate--twists that are calculated to shock and shake the reader out of a comfortable complacency...."

As to those eight types of tales found in this volume, by far the most commonly encountered is the Ghost Tale, such as "A Baby Tramp," in which a mother's ghost lures its baby son on a cross-country pilgrimage; "The Moonlit Road," a murderous tale told from three vantages, including the dead wife; "The Middle Toe of the Right Foot," in which another murdered wife (little love is lost in these grisly Bierce stories!) takes a hideous vengeance; and "Staley Fleming's Hallucination," which features what may be literature's earliest canine ghost. Then there are the purely Supernatural Tales, such as "The Spook House," with its unescapable room filled with corpses; "A Wireless Message," in which a man sees his wife's flaming doom from 1,000 miles away; and "John Bartine's Watch," with its accursed timepiece. Of course, there are the Civil War Tales, and if "Occurrence" is the best-known of the six presented here, it is not alone in quality. "One of the Missing" tells of the terrible plight of a Union soldier who is trapped beneath the wreckage of a bombarded building; "Chickamauga" describes the outcome of that horrible battle through the eyes of a 6-year-old boy; and "Three and One Are One," "The Affair at Coulter's Notch" and "The Mocking-Bird" all tell ironic tales of how the war divided families and turned son against father, husband against wife, and brother against brother. And speaking of horrible, what I refer to as Bierce's purely Horrible Doings is the fourth category here; tales that tell of characters visited by truly horrendous fates. "The Man Out of the Nose" tells of the tragic end that a married man's love affair brings about; "The Applicant" tells the sorry story of a poor old man on Christmas Eve; "A Holy Terror" gives us a gold prospector violating the grounds in a deserted cemetery; and "The Eyes of the Panther" tells of how a tragedy involving a wildcat has a far-reaching psychological impact on a woman later on. Then there are what I suppose one might call Strange Doings; tales, many of them short shorts, that make you scratch your head and go "Wha?" In "The Difficulty of Crossing a Field," "An Unfinished Race" and "Charles Ashmore's Trail," men mysteriously vanish without a trace; in "John Mortonson's Funeral," a hungry feline interrupts a man's mourning family; and in "An Adventure at Brownville," an opera singer seemingly has a murderous effect on women. Bierce also wrote what may be regarded as two Science Fiction Tales, and they are both doozies: "Moxon's Master," featuring a nasty-tempered, chess-playing automaton, and "The Damned Thing," with its invisible, field-dwelling creatures. The seventh category here is Tales of Murder, of which "An Imperfect Conflagration" is a perfect example; here, a man casually murders both his parents to possess himself of a music box. (Well, at least he had a good reason!) Finally, there are the Unclassifiable Tales; stories that are difficult to synopsize, much less describe. In "Haita the Shepherd," a lad learns a hard lesson about the essence of happiness; in "The Night Doings at 'Deadman's'," a man sits in a shanty waiting for the ghost of a "Chinaman" whose braid he cut off; in "The Death of Halpin Frayser," a man walks through a forest that is dripping with blood to meet the spirit of his dead mother....

As you can see, a wide assortment of story types, plots and settings. Most of the stories here are concise to the point of terseness; only two stories are longer than 10 pages, and many barely fill two. Elegantly written by a master wordsmith, and filled with concisely etched characters and backdrops, there is certainly not much in the way of padding. Brilliantly cynical, as would be expected from the man who gave the world "The Devil's Dictionary," the tales presented here often provoke a guffaw in the middle of a shudder.
