5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source of Information
I have lost 25 pounds myself and my daughter has lost 16 since we got the book and started with some of the recipes and healthier methods given by the book. No more frying for one.We have all but cut out beef, white flour & pasta, white and potato bread. There are some oatmeal pancakes as part of the recipes that the kids actually love.We get out as a family and exercise - be it the park or just racing to the corner - cut tv time down and dance more around the house. We have been on a roll. And the best part is they don't even realize that I have changed so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new approach to weight loss for children: teach them good health habits that they will keep for the rest of their lives
Diets are notoriously ineffective, so why do we rely on them so much to fight obesity? "The No-Diet Obesity Solution for Kids" offers a new approach to weight loss for children: teach them good health habits that they will keep for the rest of their lives. Valuing exercise, moderation, and home cooking over diet foods and crunching calories, "The No-Diet Obesity Solution for Kids" may just be what parents need to manage their children's weight, and possibly their own weight as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars As a mother and a nurse
"I enjoyed the time I have spent with The No-Diet Obesity Solution for Kids. Dr. Vos gives great practical advice and starting points for many families facing the growing issue of overweight kids--with a realistic dose of consequences that are in store for all people and families if the obesity epidemic is not met head on by committed participants. I agree with the importance of spending a great deal of time with my children, playing, being outside, exercising, and cooking. I really liked the chapter on the "The Hard Facts of Being Overweight." Too many shy away from telling the truth to patients and families, and we are doing them no favor by sugar-coating an already obvious problem. I really was drawn to the chapters on getting started together, raising active children and teens, and the 3 Ps and 3 Cs. I liked the recipes and snack ideas, too.
Dr. Vos does not judge or blame; she merely holds up a mirror and allows people the opportunity to evaluate for themselves what will work and what won't. She reminds us that parents need to be involved and that children will do what you do and not what you say. Parents may want the best for their children, but kids also want what's best for their parents, so the inclusion of the family unit is necessary for success. This book makes that point very well.
Dr. Vos does not give just one suggestion, but many, and encourages families to find their own path. Health and life are flexible and fluid, so families must be the same, and families dealing with concerns or issues need options. This book is a great place to begin and does not leave anyone out with the types of suggestions and information provided."
As a mother of two and an RN - I can say that we need more of this literature in the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars an answer to many prayers
This book is not just for parents of overweight kids--it has something for every parent. In a culture where food ads zero in on children and one in three children is caught in the epidemic of obesity, parents are beginning to realize that they have to do more to keep their children healthy. But what? This book shows the way, whether you have a brand new baby or are looking eye to eye with a teenager. Through stories and examples, this book tells you how to read standard growth charts and apply them to your own child's growth. It tells you which part of the food label to focus on, and why you should buy foods that don't have labels. The book shows you how to organize family meals so you can fit homemade goodness into your busy schedule--and provides recipes, too.

The author, a doctor who actually does all of the things she asks her patients to do, provides a calm viewpoint on family matters, with insights about the value of going outside to play and sharing family dinnertime so that everyone in the family is truly nourished. I wish I'd had this book years ago when my children were young. I would have loved to avoid some of those mealtime battles. You can be sure that I am going to use these tips and techniques with my grandchildren! ... Read more

Product Description
The physical and mental health consequences of body image problems, eating disorders, and obesity in children and adolescents can be serious and can extend into adulthood. But as the empirical data presented in this second edition of a landmark volume show, these disorders are preventable and treatable. Research in these three areas has exploded since the publication of the first edition of Body Image, Eating Disorders, and Obesity in Youth, and in these new pages leading researchers and practitioners detail recent progress in treatment and discuss areas of persisting challenge.

Risk factors for these conditions appear early in development, and many of these factors are social and familial. Cultural variables play a powerful role, too, and the authors in this book demonstrate how body image and eating problems present and vary across ethnic groups and in boys and girls. No other volume considers all three of these challenging areas together, and no other volume provides the same range of information, from very early experience through treatment. All chapters are empirically based and contain suggestions for future research. This book assimilates up-to-date information into a form that is readily accessible by clinicians, researchers, and students. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate Information!
There were so many seriously inaccurate nutrition claims in the first few chapters that I couldn't finish this book. Although some of the ideas are sound (menu planning and family involvement will certainly improve your ability to eat well), it is a disservice to people fighting for good health to provide them with wrong nutrition information! Accurate information can be found on the Weston A. Price Foundation's website at [...] or in Robyn O'Brien's book The Unhealthy Truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Food Planning
A theme of the work is to plan healthful food
choices. Food preparation is covered in detail.
For instance, proper food portions are discussed.
An increased waistline is associated with
myeloid leukemia.

Increased muscle mass helps to burn calories
more efficiently so athletics are critical.
Model activities include walking the dog,
gardening, painting, car washing, home repairs
and vacuuming. Readers are warned not to rely
on a good metabolism alone.

A variety of healthy choices are extolled. i.e.

o fruit
o non-fat yogurt
o baked potato
o plain aired popcorn, nuts and lentils

Food content is discussed at length. For instance,
pinto beans have selenium (Se. ) . Kidney beans have fiber.
Black beans contain magnesium (Mg. ). Chick peas
contain folate and black eyed beans are high in
calcium (Ca. ) content.

The author indicates how a single sugared soda a day
may add 15 pounds or more per year. The book is an
excellent reference for trim people and dieters alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthier Family!
So far this book is giving really good advice. It isn't a page turner, however it does give you sound common sense advice about what should be in your families food choices. It makes you think, "well duh, I knew that but just wasn't applying it"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and easy to understand
I have been overweight most of my life and heard about this book on the radio. This book is so informative and very encouraging.I like that she doesn't make you feel like you have to do this strict plan to lose weight. She just shares a wealth of knowledge that helps you learn to make better choices. She also makes you feel like even with small changes you are making a difference for you and for your family.I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend this.

5-0 out of 5 stars HFL
In the dedication of her book, Amy brought to light her mom, "who so struggled with her weight and her happiness."

She is very honest with the term, "Fat Families, Thin Families",however, she does look to our best life collectively with our family.

In March 2008 I met and spoke with Amy at the Natural Products Expo in Anaheim, California earlier this year. There she let me know I could pre-order the book on amazon.com. I ordered the book from Amazon and I'm happy that I did.

Do you think/worry about the future of your children/family based on your own health?

Amy challenges us to move the target to family team lifestyle rather than on the crisis of our own personal weight loss for a season. The book challenges us and re-challenges us to think tomorrow for ourselves and generationally.

The framework of the book is the 4 P's: Plan, Prepare, Portion, and Play. The book is a vehicle to help us move together in the right direction and shifting habits to Healthy Families for Life (HFL).

Request Amy's Health Pearl For The Day on the book's website, there's a lot of great information to keep you on track.

5-0 out of 5 stars Livin' Large
The authors of this book get straight to the point! They don't hold back any punches and when it comes to such a serious matter I don't believe that they should. By reading this book the reader will learn that African-American's suffer from the disease of obesity more than any other race. That's right, these author's feel that obesity is a disease! They don't buy into the myth that African-American women are suppose to be `thick' in order to be considered cute or sexy. They also think that we should know that obesity is dangerous and even more alarming is the fact that more of our younger African-American children are starting to show signs of obesity related diseases. Wow, this is a serious topic, right? Yes, it is, but these two authors -who by the way are sisters- have written a book filled with solid information so that African-American's can learn that they have a choice in making the right decisions about what they eat and how to live a healthier life style.

Dr. Stacy Ann Mitchell shares medical facts with us, like how the metabolism works and the formula for calculating `Body Mass Index'. Her sister Teri Mitchell on the other hand comes at the reader with a different approach. A "recovering big girl" approach. She adds humor, honesty, but even more importantly she adds that human touch to let the reader know that it was not that easy for her either to decide to make the right choices. From tips on controlling your blood pressure to poems like "The Heart of the Fat", I think these authors and this book will be successful in getting this important message across to the reader. I got the message!

I am glad that I decided to read "Livin' Large African American Sisters Confront Obesity"! I highly recommend it to those of you who are wrestling -up and down-with their weight and obesity related health problems. Also if you are still using excuses like `big bones' run in my family, you need to read this book!

The most authoritative and comprehensive guide to realizing the amazing health benefits of 5-HTP

Written by one of America's leading naturopathic doctors, 5-HTP explains how this natural amino acid can safely and effectively regulate low serotonin levels, which have been linked to depression, obesity, insomnia, migraines, and anxiety.

5-HTP is also a powerful antioxidant that can protect the body from free-radical damage, reducing the risk of serious illnesses such as cancer. 5-HTP has already helped thousands, and Dr. Murray, citing extensive scientific studies and case histories, shows how this groundbreaking supplement can help you.Amazon.com Review
5-HTP is a naturally derived amino acid that has been shown incomprehensive studies to be safer than prescription drugs for thetreatment of insomnia and depression, and can also be used fortreating obesity, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and premenstrualsyndrome. It may prove to be more popular than St. John's wort for thetreatment of depression and other serotonin-related conditions, asit's been shown to produce results in as little as two weeks, whilethe herb may take a month or longer.

Author Michael Murray, N.D.,a leading naturopath and coauthor of The Encyclopedia of NaturalMedicine, delves very deeply to explain the hows and whys ofdepression at the neurotransmitter level, and the illustrations ofpresynaptic membranes may be a bit much for the lay reader. There arealso several sections with intimidating titles along the lines of"Enhancing 5-HTP with Catecholamine Precursors." But thebook's comprehensiveness makes up for its occasional denseness. Murrayincludes enlightening sections on nutrition for peak serotoninsynthesis, other complementary herbal supplements, and many online andphysical sources for obtaining 5-HTP. --Erica Jorgensen ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Potentially harmful advice
I am all for natural ways to relieve depression and other ailments. I have been a a number of different prescription antidepressants and hated the side effects. However, I found Dr. Murray's book rather troublesome. As someone else pointed out, he tends to get too clinical for the average layperson to understand, and the book does contain a number of inconsistencies. More troubling is that he recommends doses that are far too high! I spoke to a naturopathic physician and have seen articles stating that the daily intake of 5 HTP should not exceed 50 milligrams. Dr. Murray recommends far more than that. He also neglects to point out that people ideally should only take this with a doctor's supervision. This stuff is just as powerful as prescription antidepressants, and should not be taken lightly. Furthermore, Dr. Murray is very rigid in his philosophies. He insists that people must completely eliminate caffeine, alcohol, foods with sugar, etc. I realize consuming caffeinated beverages, booze and sugar to excess is a bad idea. But they're not harmful in moderation. To the contrary, numerous studies have concluded that consuming a glass of red wine per day actually has many health benefits. The same goes for green tea, which contains caffeine. Furthermore, the average person would be hard-pressed to completely eliminate these from their diets. Dr. Murray also insists that people must take literally dozens of supplements to facilitate the maximum effectiveness for 5 HTP. I can't imagine how the majority of people could swallow that many pills a day. Plus, the expense would be prohibitive. I do believe that this author has his heart in the right place. But I feel this book misses the mark in a lot of ways. And people should not take this without consulting with a trained medical professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to the Use of an Excellent Product
This book provided scientific, statistical and anecdotal support for my decision to use this product. It guides you through the body and the brain and explains how and why it works, and why it is better than other alternatives. The author provides suggested supplements for use with 5 HTP and appropriate dosages for each of its many uses.It was very readable and not dogmatic.
For those, like me, who suspect that long term use of prescription antidepressants may be inadvisable, and for those who are looking for less expensive and safer ways to manage their moods, their weight, their pain, and their sleep patterns, this book is an excellent guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural Cure for Migraine Headaches
I have had this book on my shelf for a while occasionally scanning it for information about headaches. For some reason I picked it up the other day and my life has been changed. I use to take a ton of meds for migraines and not to mention the cost of my rescue meds. I checked with my neurologist before taking the 5 HTP.He thought it was good to try it. I have been headache free for over 2 weeks now. I feel great and have energy and wake up feeling rested. My suggestion is if you have headaches, of course check with your doctor, but give this a try. No side effects except feeling much better and off toxic meds. I have tried EVERYTHING. This is the only thing that gives me hope. I found his book very informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5-HTP is the real deal
I can't comment on the book as I have not read it.But since you are on this page and considering the book, assume you are interested in 5-HTP.I just want to encourage you to explore this remedy...I've tried many prescription and non-prescription formulations, and this one has far and away worked the best.Others worked as well for a time, but then dropped off.Of course, must include the caveat that my make-up is undoubtedly different than yours, so your results may vary - but...check it out! ... Editorial Review

Product Description
As obesity has become a serious health problem globally, more attention is needed about nutritional problems in the overweight and obese population, especially about vitamins and oxidative stress. Scientific studies have found close relationships between vitamins and obesity. For example, childhood obesity is often associated with an increased risk of low vitamin B12 concentration.
The condition of deficiencies in several vitamins is especially serious in those with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and after gastric bypass surgery. Individuals with deficiencies in some vitamins are more difficult to lose fat mass, and burn less fat during fat burning exercises. Low levels of certain vitamins may perturb cellular functions and impair insulin action, glucose metabolism and other metabolic processes.
Weight loss interventions are often associated with reduced intake of micronutrients, such as vitamin B6, calcium and vitamin E.Several vitamins have been found to play important roles in food intake and weight control. Supplementation of these vitamins may be helpful not only for weight loss, but also for the prevention of diabetes and other obesity-related diseases.
Certain diets can improve vitamin status and the whole dietary quality, and help maintain fat-free mass during the weight loss time. The right dosages are necessary after gastric surgeries for obesity, to adjust the reduced serum vitamin levels. Many vitamins are antioxidants. Correct dosages of vitamin supplementation may also help reduce systemic oxidative stress in overweight and obese individuals. Effects and applications of vitamin A, B, C, D, and E supplementation on controlling body weight, cholesterol, and oxidative damages are discussed here.

Excerpts:

Naturally Thin Kids is revolutionary in its insights and advice about how to stop the world's epidemic of obesity. I have observed, as a family therapist and wellness educator for over 25 years, that those who fall into the trap of doing food by the numbers invariably fail, because eating is an instinctual process, not a paint-by-numbers function. In this book, Antonello draws on her extensive experience to take the matter to the next step, by revealing exactly why the more you try to "diet" the more weight you tend to put on, and also exactly how to reconnect with your body's natural wisdom about when, what and how much to eat to be naturally thin. She even offers specific scripts on how to speak to kids of different ages about their eating habits and how to bullet-proof your kids against bad advice from TV, friends and the culture at large. I have already recommended this book to a number of parents who are concerned with their children's figures - and/or with their own.

This work describes how and why the cardiovascular and other systems become affectedby excessive weights. Major treatment decisions are facilitated by Dr. Chapunoff's down-to-earth explanations. Also addressed here is the unfairness and ineffectiveness of some insurance corporations incovering the costs of weight-loss surgery. For many of those who read this book -patients aswell as health care practitioners and undergraduates- the concepts and the understandingof what morbid obesity is all about will never be the same.

In his book, `Morbid Obesity: Will You Allow It To Kill You?' author Eduardo Chapunoff provides an in-depth account of morbid obesity that includes the causes, physiological and physiological effects, treatments, and what those suffering from obesity must do psychologically and emotionally to achieve long term weight loss. Chapunoff's fundamental message to achieving successful long term weight loss is "radical behavior modification."

In the US, obesity was not classified as a disease until 1985 and now the disease has an estimated annual cost of $117 billion. Chapunoff explains that morbid obesity must be treated as a medical disease, not as a lifestyle choice. He also explains that morbid obesity is a condition when one has a weight excess of 100 pounds or more and a BMI greater than or equal to 40. He provides a thorough account of what happens to the body's organs such as the heart, lungs, and other systems when one is morbidly obese. An emphasis is placed on its life threatening effects as well as the psychological effects and social implications. He also discusses `comorbidities', the diseases closely associated with morbid obesity.

Chapunoff provides key messages to treating obesity such as: "Don't hate the problem. Instead love the challenge, radical behavior modification is essential, and awareness helps prevention." He goes into great detail about the options to treating obesity such as the various surgical methods and when morbid obesity causes one to be disabled and at a great risk of dying, weight loss surgery is essential. He talks about how society promotes not only eating, but also over eating, including the kinds of foods that contribute to obesity. Different types of weight loss surgeries are discussed that includes the types of procedures, risks, benefits, and what to expect during and after the surgery. He outlines the misconceptions, misunderstandings, and miscalculation in the management of morbid obesity, as well as the role of patients and their friends, family, surgeons, and insurance company.

Morbid obesity is a disease that has become an epidemic in western society. `Morbid Obesity: Will You Allow It To Kill You?' is a thorough and easy to understand book about morbid obesity that provides extensive information to help people better understand this disease. Very insightful parts of the book are the interviews with weight loss surgeons and patients who have had the procedure. Chapunoff also provides behavior modification tips that will help people achieve long term weight loss no matter what weight loss option they choose. The book contains a vast wealth of information about the physiological, psychological, financial, and social implications of morbid obesity. As well, Chapunoff discusses the alarming increase in the number of children suffering from childhood obesity.

I highly recommend ``Morbid Obesity: Will You Allow It To Kill You?'' to individuals, parents, and health professionals as an educational and insightful guide on the issues surrounding morbid obesity and what people can do to prevent and treat this disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars A life-changing and life-saving book onMorbid Obesity
After reading Morbid Obesity by Eduardo Chapunoff, I quickly went to my full-length mirror and analyzed my body.My doctor had told me during my last visit that I was 30 pounds overweight and, as a result, my blood pressure was too high.My knees had been bothering me too, so I knew the weight was causing other problems as well.Although I wasn't dealing with morbid obesity which is a weight excess of 100 pounds or more, I was still concerned.I believed a conservative approach would help me get rid of the weight, but I found myself thinking of the nine million morbidly obese people in the United States who will not respond to such an approach.

Dr. Chapunoff deals with this subject with total honesty because he recognizes that peoples' lives are going to be affected by this book--hopefully in a positive way. Being overweight contributes to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, high levels of cholesterol, cancer, etc. Ask yourself how many overweight people you know who have been suddenly stricken with a stroke or heart attack.Factors that influence obesity are behavioral, environmental and genetic. As most of us know, inactivity, cessation of smoking and even religion can contribute to our weight gain. The author reminded me about Christian churches with their pot luck dinners, summer picnics . . . and ensuing calories.Other religions have some dietary restrictions so their members may be thinner, but still I know from experience, wherever people gather, there is usually an abundance of food.

What do people who are morbidly obese do?If conservative measures don't work, and all too often they don't, what is the answer? After reading the author's description and viewing the charts concerning twenty-five diseases closely associated with morbid obesity, readers might very well begin to think about having weight-loss (bariatric) surgery.Dr. Chapunoff lists the clinical guidelines to help prospective patients in making this decision. He emphasizes that this is not for everyone and that medically supervised weight reduction programs should be attempted prior to considering a surgical approach. The character and personality of the would-be patient have much to do with this decision.Even after successful surgery, the patient must be motivated and willing to make a change in his or her lifestyle. The doctor suggests that those considering the surgery talk with others who have had it and obtain feedback.

Dr. Chapunoff discusses the five major surgical procedures that patients should talk about with potential surgeons. Again, the charts and illustrations are very helpful in educating non-professionals regarding the basics of these procedures. The author explains the advantages and disadvantages of the various methods.
My favorite chapter is one in which Mrs. Muniz tells of her personal experience as a weight loss surgical patientwho went from 257 pounds in June 2003 to 125 pounds in March of 2006.It is a wonderfully encouraging and intimate story of a courageous, unselfish woman who reaches out to others with her firsthand knowledge.

Please do not think the doctor is advising everyone to have weight loss surgery; he is just asking that they weigh the risks against the benefits and make a decision only after much consideration.Technically speaking, he says that insurance coverage for this surgery is widespread, but that does not mean all patients will find their insurance carriers ready to sign off on the surgery.Dr. Chapunoff tells readers what they need to do to ultimately get approval.

This wonderful resource provides a wealth of pertinent information about weight problems; therefore, I advise every reader of this review to purchase this book and make it a permanent part of his or her home library.I highly recommend Morbid Obesity, not just to those struggling with weight problems but to all individuals who want to better understand their own bodies. This is a life-changing and life-saving book!

Product Description
This practical guide approaches obesity and overeating from a psychological perspective, and offers sensitive methods to increase patients' sense of self-worth, self-knowledge, and motivation to lose weight. "The Overweight Patient" explores the underlying beliefs and behaviours that may contribute to obesity, including psychological needs, addiction, fear of deprivation, parental influences and sexual fears. Kathy Leach draws a useful distinction between the need to eat and the need to maintain a large body size, and addresses the reasons for both long-term obesity and short-term weight gain. She provides a clear and accessible introduction to the psychoanalytic theory of transactional analysis, and details how this approach can be used with overweight people. Illustrated with patient histories, exercises and worked examples of techniques, this book enables therapists and health practitioners to help obese people come to terms with their size, or to support their decision to change their behaviour and reduce their need to eat. ... Product Description
Polyphenols are chemicals found in many plants. Polyphenols are usually antioxidants that can protect cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Polyphenols include tannins, lignins, and flavonoids. Many polyphenols have anti-obesity activities and are beneficial for weight loss. Aging and obesity may lead to inflammatory and oxidative conditions. Inflammation and oxidative stress are also important pathological factors in obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, fatty liver, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Polyphenol extracts from fruits and herbs such as apples and green tea can inhibit inflammation, lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels, and reduce risks of heart diseases. These natural antioxidants can be used as dietary supplements without evident adverse effects. The latest discoveries and studies of cellular and molecular mechanisms of such polyphenols suggest that they can be potential agents for the treatment of obesity and associated diseases.

Excerpts:

“Recent studies have elucidated the possible effects of… for weight loss. For example, … has been found to reduce dietary lipid absorption in humans… Supplementation with … stopped diet-induced obesity. …treatment also showed a positive effect on improving mood. Short-term treatment has been found to reverse preexisting high-fat-induced metabolic pathologies in obese subjects. In the long-term, … treatment can inhibit the development of obesity, symptoms associated with the metabolic syndrome, and fatty liver.”

“The tested group took the supplement for twelve weeks. The study found that ingestion of … led to the reduction of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol levels. The supplement also improved the visceral fat area …. No adverse reactions were observed. …These studies demonstrate that … may help regulate fat metabolism, protect against inflammation, and be beneficial for obese and aging problems.”

“Such studies suggest that … has properties as a potent antioxidant. … can attenuate inflammatory changes caused by adipocytes and macrophages in obesity, and may be helpful for relieving conditions of oxidative stress in obese individuals.”

“As inflammation plays an important role in the pathological process of obesity, the immune-regulation effect of … may be helpful for improving conditions in obese individuals.”

“Furthermore, the level of serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol was increased…, while the low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol was decreased. These results suggest that … has the potential to reduce serum glucose and cholesterol levels. The extract may be helpful for relieving diabetes and obesity.”

“The study suggests that … have inhibitory effects on high-fat diet induced obesity. Such effects may be mediated through the inhibition of carbohydrate and lipid absorption from the small intestine.”

“These effects may help explain the anti-cancer effects of …. As cancer is also an obesity-related disease, … can be a potential candidate to be used as a therapeutic agent for both obesity and cancer.”
