Product Description
Children's health has made tremendous strides over the past century. In general, life expectancy has increased by more than thirty years since 1900 and much of this improvement is due to the reduction of infant and early childhood mortality. Given this trajectory toward a healthier childhood, we begin the 21st-century with a shocking development - an epidemic of obesity in children and youth. The increased number of obese children throughout the U.S. during the past 25 years has led policymakers to rank it as one of the most critical public health threats of the 21st-century. "Preventing Childhood Obesity" provides a broad-based examination of the nature, extent, and consequences of obesity in U.S. children and youth, including the social, environmental, medical, and dietary factors responsible for its increased prevalence. The book also offers a prevention-oriented action plan that identifies the most promising array of short-term and longer-term interventions, as well as recommendations for the roles and responsibilities of numerous stakeholders in various sectors of society to reduce its future occurrence."Preventing Childhood Obesity" explores the underlying causes of this serious health problem and the actions needed to initiate, support, and sustain the societal and lifestyle changes that can reverse the trend among our children and youth. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Written by a Committee
This is the report of a government appointed committee. The honest truth is that there's no way to prevent childhood obesity and it's none of the government's business anyway, but that's not what government committees are paid to say.
It is fairly obvious that they were further restricted because there some other things they were not supposed to say.One obvious factor is the change in the ethnic makeup of the United States. The magnitude of this factor can be assessed from the tables and graphs. They point out that childhood obesity is largely associated these days in the United States with poverty. They then provide a table showing that over 35 billion dollars a year are spent by the Federal Government giving food to the poor.
There are some suggestions they were not allowed to make, such as the use of medications, although enormous numbers of kids are on Ritalin type drugs, which keep them short and skinny as well as better behaved.
The question of height is shortchanged. Changes in stature of the average American over years are simply not mentioned. For many years Americans grew taller and taller and no action was called for to thwart the tallness epidemic. We do not know why the same food intake and energy output that makes one child grow vertically makes another grow horizontally.
The decline in smoking over the years is not considered as a causative factor. Birth weight issues are barely mentioned.(They were not supposed to recommend people smoking or having low birth weight babies).
They pay lip-service to evidence-based medicine (a fashionable mantra) but evidence based medicine demands that we consider the adverse effects of any measure.Exercise is regarded as an unalloyed benefit, with no mention that any child may find it uncomfortable, anxiety-producing or embarrassing. They recommend weighing children in school. The experimental studies they mention all show that school physical educations has no effect on childhood obesity but they support increasing it.
Perhaps it is fortunate that the weight-reducing measures proposed are likely to be ineffective. If they really worked they would, presumably, be equally applied to all children and would make some of the thinner ones undesirably thin.
Some of the sentences convey useful information such as "Everyone needs to eat food and consume beverages for daily sustenance." (bet you didn't know that until they told you). There's a very helpful glossary containing definitions of such esoteric words as "disease" "health" "risk" and"prevention"that you might not know the meaning of. The authors themselves are unfamiliar with the word "we."They refer to themselves throughout in the third person as "the committee."
Even with the aid of the glossary it's sometimes difficult to make any sense of sentences written in dense Washingtonian such as "The tension between stigmatization and normalization can be addressed, as it has been for other public health concerns, by focusing on the behaviors that can be changed to promote health rather than on the individual and his or her appearance."I look forward to the English translation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Examines the modern crisis in children's health issues: childhood obesity
Preventing Childhood Obesity: Health In The Balance examines the modern crisis in children's health issues: childhood obesity. Not only are the environmental, social, medical and historic factors influencing children's weight considered over the long term, but a prevention program identifies the best of short- and long-term interventions and how adults can guide kids away from common pitfalls. Recommendations range from mobilizing parents to making national health a priority overall.

Product Description
SuperSized Kids shows how the mushrooming childhood obesity epidemic is destroying children's lives, draining family resources and pushing America dangerously close to a total health care collapse -- but also explains, step by step, how parents can work to avert the coming crisis by taking control of the weight challenges facing every member of their family. For the first time in American history, a new epidemic is killing our kids. In 1960, only 4 percent of American children were considered obese. That number has skyrocketed to 15 percent today and is almost triple that number in certain ethnic groups.Staggering; is the word the U.S. Surgeon General uses to describe the potential health care costs of childhood obesity. We are seeing Generation Y growing into Generation XL, he declares. The most common health problem facing U.S. children today is being overweight -- a condition robbing kids of both their quality and quantity of life. Medical problems that doctors once saw only in adults aged 50 or older are now striking children: heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, asthma, joint problems, arthritis. One in three children born in 2000 is expected to develop Type 2 diabetes, with the risk of blindness, loss of kidney function, and early death associated with it.This is the first generation in American history whose life expectancy may actually decrease.Something has to be done, and quickly. Fad diets and self-focused weight loss plans have proven ineffective. An overweight child cannot be effectively treated in isolation of the family insisted one recent study, complaining, surprisingly few intervention programs include multiple family membersSuperSized Kids is different. It shows parents how to cure the #1 family health crisis facing them today. It provides a step-by-step, medically sound and eminently doable lifestyle change program designed for the whole family. 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful resource for my family
This book has been an extremely useful resource for my family. "Food for Thought" and "Recipe for Success" highlight boxes made this book very easy reading to skim through and eye-opening stories about real people made it a book I read from cover to cover. I refer to the corresponding web site regularly. It is a real asset for my family's use of the book's eight-week plan to reduce our weight.

3-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of facts and figures
Obesity in America is of epidemic proportions. This fact is easily affirmed with a quick look on a crowded street. Research shows not only are more people overweight or obese, the overweight keep piling on the pounds. Sadly, this phenomenon is not just an adult problem. In the book SuperSized Kids How To Rescue Your Child From The Obesity Threat, Walt Larimore, M.D., and Sherri Flynt explore the medical consequences of obesity in today's youth and offer their medical experiences, both personal and clinical, as they attempt to tackle this worldwide crisis. Obesity does not discriminate. In fact, as this book so adeptly explains, obesity affects all persons, individually and as a society. The negative health impact is globally catastrophic in addition to financially devastating. Larimore and Flynt, with the use of reality-based case in points, attempt to explain the ravages this disease presents while offering thier medical expertise to assure us this trend can be reversed. With simple medical terminology and easy to follow lifestyle changes, these dedicated professionals make eradicating childhood obesity seem like a real possibility. While exposing probable causes of obesity, the authors are quick to point out modern luxuries and conveniences as the likeliest culprits. Except, instead of assigning blame to society and culture alone, they lay the responsibility and recovery at the feet of the individual. If the purpose of this book is to explain what obesity is, what it does, and how to prevent it, that goal was certainly attained. Larimore and Flynt give the reader every reason to be concerned and become proactive with the weight, current and future health of our next generation.

SuperSized Kids How To Rescue Your Child From The Obesity Threat is one of many books tackling the issue of childhood obesity available today. Written to appeal to parents and caregivers, it sometimes uses over the top scare tactics to get the reader's attention. Although easy to read, the layout is a bit distracting with the pages having sidebars of Recipe For Success, Fifty Ways to SuperSize Your Kids, and/or Food For Thought. Using real life stories to emphasize the subject matter is usually a positive tool used by authors. This book employs too many. Parents who have children struggling with weight want answers and solutions, not necessarily a support group of unknowns. They already know they belong to an ever growing population and if they are reading this book, they are making strides to escape from it. From a clinical viewpoint, this books supplies plenty of facts and figures. What it doesn't do, is make them interesting. With so many other books available with the same subject matter, I suggest looking for another.

Product Description
Obesity is a serious health problem globally. However, only a few medications are available on the market, and their long-term safety is still unknown. Pancreatic lipase activity is related to the source of excess calories.Natural dietary supplements such as herbal extracts that can serve as pancreatic lipase inhibitors have been considered promising candidates for weight loss and anti-obesity. For example, herbs such as ginseng have been found useful for the management of metabolic syndromes. Saponins isolated from these herbs may have significant weight loss effects. Many of these saponins have both anti-diabetes and anti-obesity properties. They can inhibit pancreatic lipase and delay the intestinal absorption of dietary fat. Many also have anti-inflammatory properties. Some can control blood pressure and reduce risks of cardiovascular diseases. They can be potential therapeutics for healing obesity-related diseases including hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and atherosclerosis.

Excerpts:

“Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been found very useful for the management of metabolic syndrome including obesity. For example, herbs such as … have been considered the potential candidates as effective therapeutics for anti-obesity. Specifically, extracts from the root, rootlet, berry and leaf of … have been proved to have properties of anti-obesity, anti-oxidation, anti-hyperglycemia, and insulin sensitization in different model systems.”

“It can decrease levels of blood glucose and lipids in diabetic animal models. It has also been found to protect beta cells, improve insulin sensitivity and inhibit oxidative stress.”

“… supplementations of … led to reductions in the body weight, total food intake, fat contents, serum total cholesterol, and levels of leptin. Both treatments also inhibited the hypothalamic expression of orexigenic neuropeptide Y, the neurotransmitter that may be responsible for increased food intake.”

“It has been suggested that the anti-obesity effects of the crude saponins may be mediated through the inhibition of intestinal absorption of dietary fat.”

“It is known that … has properties of anti-diabetes, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer.”

“… provides stronger anti-diabetic effects than the regular … does, and is beneficial for improving conditions of diabetic nephropathy.”

“In addition, the extracts of … reduced the serum insulin resistance index and triglyceride levels.…These results suggest that saponins extracted from the root of … have both anti-diabetes and anti-obesity properties.”

“The rhizomes of … have been used as a substitute for … in China and Japan for the treatment of arteriosclerosis, hyperlipidemia, hypertension and diabetes mellitus.”

“… dietary supplements of … have anti-obesity, hypolipidemia, and liver protection activities. The anti-obesity effect may be mediated through its saponins’ inhibition effects on pancreatic lipase.… has been suggested as a potential therapeutic candidate in the treatment of both obesity and hyperlipidemia. It may be effective in reducing the contents of circulating and whole body cholesterol. Such effects may also decrease the risk of cardiovascular diseases.”

“… dietary supplements of the extracts from the herbs significantly improved the control of the body weight and blood pressure. In addition, the supplements improved physical and emotional well-being, and the quality of life.”

“They have been used for healing and preventing diseases including obesity, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes type 2, hypertension, coronary heart disease, cancer, and cataract.”

“These findings suggest that supplementation of … can promote weight loss and decrease hyperlipidemia. An interesting thing is that such effects are sustainable with no withdrawal rebound. Dietary supplementation of … can be a potential therapeutic method for weight loss.” ... Read more

Product Description
The remarkable increase in the prevalence of obesity among children and youth in the United States over a relatively short timespan represents one of the defining public health challenges of the 21st century. The country is beginning to recognize childhood obesity as a major public health epidemic that will incur substantial costs to the nation. However, the current level of investment by the public and private sectors still does not match the extent of the problem. There is a substantial underinvestment of resources to adequately address the scope of this obesity crisis. At this early phase in addressing the epidemic, actions have begun on a number of levels to improve the dietary patterns and to increase the physical activity levels of young people. Schools, corporations, youth-related organizations, families, communities, foundations, and government agencies are working to implement a variety of policy changes, new programs, and other interventions. These efforts, however, generally remain fragmented and small in scale. Moreover, the lack of systematic monitoring and evaluation of interventions have hindered the development of an evidence base to identify, apply, and disseminate lessons learned and to support promising efforts to prevent childhood obesity. "Progress in Preventing Childhood Obesity: How Do We Measure Up?" examines the progress made by obesity prevention initiatives in the United States from 2004 to 2006. This book emphasizes a call to action for key stakeholders and sectors to commit to and demonstrate leadership in childhood obesity prevention, evaluates all policies and programs, monitors their progress, and encourages stakeholders to widely disseminate promising practices. This book will be of interest to federal, state, and local government agencies; educators and schools; public health and health care professionals; private-sector companies and industry trade groups; media; parents; and those involved in implementing community-based programs and consumer advocacy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A memoir of weight loss with much inspiration, highly recommended
To lose over a hundred pounds is truly a feat. "One Foot in Front of the Other: A Man's Journey Away from Obesity" tells the story of Andrew Leon LeClair and how he loss one hundred twenty five pounds and kept it off for over three decades. He tells his story of how he lost his weight and how keeping the weight loss was at times harder than losing it. "One Foot in Front of the Other" is a memoir of weight loss with much inspiration, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Awe-Inspiring Read!
It took me one, long work-free day to finish reading "One Foot in Front of the Other" I was captivated by the candidness of the author, as well as captivated by his honesty and openness in regard to his childhood years. Andrew offered brief histories of his grandparents and parents, and openly discussed how he felt as a child being raised by his parent's in the 60's and 70's the small mill town of Waterville, Maine.

I've known many acquaintances who have continued struggling with their weight even after bariatric surgery, including my own aunt, who was one of the first women in our state to have the surgery in the early 1970's. I know plenty of people personally, including myself, who have struggled with weight either as children, adults, or from childhood into adulthood. It is always a personal struggle, and is usually wrought with intense emotions and physical challenges, as well as unhealthy views of nutrition.

Andrew touches on many aspects of the battle with weight loss and healthy eating, and some of the issues he struggled with around nourishing his body felt familiar to my own issues, as I continued reading the book. He also touches on the fact that surgery alone is not the `cure' or the end-all, be-all for weight loss. He discusses the reality of the psychological and physical changes that must take place before, during, and after bariatric surgery to succeed in keeping the weight off, and becoming healthy and strong. Andrew proves that in making healthy changes in one's life, a strong mind and a healthy attitude are two of the most important keys to success!

This book is not another diet plan offering instructions on how to lose weight and keep it off. This book is a straightforward personal account of how Andrew LeClair battled his physical challenge ~ his weight ~ and his psychological and emotional demons. It's a book about how the author overcame the struggles associated with his childhood to emerge a new and healthy adult male.

"One Foot in Front of the Other" is an awe-inspiring, insightful, and honest account of one man's journey through life, and how he battled the obstacles in his way to emerge a stronger and clearer minded individual, who goes on to complete the Boston Marathon in his forties! "One Foot in Front of the Other" is a definite must-read for those who enjoy being inspired or require motivation to complete what ever it is they want to achieve in their own lives. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Journey of Life
Reviewed by Marty Shaw for Reader Views (07/10)

"One Foot in Front of the Other" is not the type of weight loss book that will give you a list of rules or routines to follow, but this biography of one man's journey will show you how he transformed himself from a `big-boned' child into a healthy man who completed the Boston Marathon in his forties, and he shows that anyone can share a similar journey by revealing that he's just an ordinary man living an ordinary life.

Andrew starts with a brief glimpse into the lives of his grandparents, showing how his parents became the people they were. His parents, in turn, had a profound effect on the type of person he and his brothers would grow up to be. A rough childhood set Andrew on the road to obesity when he learned that, rather than facing his pain and fear; he could "self-medicate" his emotional injuries with Twinkies and other "yummy treats." This form of `self-medication' continued even after Andrew realized his dietary habits were having an adverse effect on his body; deciding that something had to be done only after he tipped the scales at three-hundred pounds while still in college.

Feeling a burning desire to become one of the "beautiful people," Andrew bypassed conventional diets and workout routines in favor of undergoing gastric bypass surgery, and this is where the book really starts to shine. People who consider this surgical procedure as a quick weight loss program will have their eyes opened when they discover the drastic steps and changes that have to be made in order to live successfully with this procedure. From a radical change in diet and the way meals are eaten to the follow-up surgeries that take place years later, Andrew shows us that gastric bypass surgery comes with its own unique challenges and, as he mentions at one point, you still weigh the same after the surgery as you did before; the actual weight loss is up to you.

Andrew is a fun and witty person, and his personality shines throughout the entire book "One Foot in Front of the Other." From his humble beginnings to his globe-spanning career, he maintains a down-to-earth personality that's hard to resist. His life in his words is entertaining, inspiring, and educational.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
From one reader:

Andrew, I just finished the book. Wow. Made me laugh, made me cry...then made me cry again. I always knew you were a sweet and funny guy...now I know you are an amazing man, too. I'm happy that life worked out the way it did for you. Your perserverence in the face of obstacles is inspiring.

Reading your story makes me want to hug my kids when they get home, and face some of my own demons that have caused me to gain 60 pounds in 6 years. I think I'll go for a run now. ;)

Thanks for sharing your story, Andrew...it's captivating and extremely motivating.

Product Description
As the public health threat of childhood obesity has become clear, the issue has become the focus of local, state, and national initiatives. Many of these efforts are centered on the community environment in recognition of the role of environmental factors in individual behaviors related to food and physical activity. In many communities, for example, fresh produce is not available or affordable, streets and parks are not amenable to exercise, and policies and economic choices make fast food cheaper and more convenient than healthier alternatives.

Community efforts to combat obesity vary in scope and scale; overall, however, they remain fragmented, and little is known about their effectiveness. At the local level, communities are struggling to determine which obesity prevention programs to initiate and how to evaluate their impact.

In this context, the Institute of Medicine held two workshops to inform current work on obesity prevention in children through input from individuals who are actively engaged in community- and policy-based obesity prevention programs. Community perspectives were elicited on the challenges involved in undertaking policy and programmatic interventions aimed at preventing childhood obesity, and on approaches to program implementation and evaluation that have shown promise. Highlights of the workshop presentations and discussions are presented in this volume. ... Read more

Product Description
'Your eyes are bigger than your stomach'. At one time or another, all of us have heard this familiar warning against overeating. We don't usually listen. Instead, we judge our portion sizes by what looks good to us, rather than by the actual healthy capacity of our stomachs. We often judge food by how it looks and by its size. Tiny wild strawberries, for example, are actually far sweeter than the enormous hothouse ones sold in grocery stores, but we don't care. We want strawberries the size of small apples. A small homemade muffin may be more flavorful and certainly healthier than the giant muffins offered at supermarkets and donut shops, but we want the Big muffin. And once we have that humongous muffin, we eat the entire thing, every sweet, fat-laden morsel. In fact, the more we're served, the more we eat. Portion size is one of the major culprits in today's obesity epidemic. Well over half the U.S. population is either overweight or obese, a fact that contributes to serious health risks. Even if your weight is currently within the 'normal' range, you may still be participating in America's super sized lifestyle, and eventually, your eating habits may endanger your health. This book will help you understand how Americans' eating habits have been shaped by their love of bigness. It will give you information about what's best for your long-term health, and it will allow you to super size your consciousness when it comes to food. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fast Food Nation for Kids...
This was actually a book from the juvenile section at the library...but as I am currently working on a reading "set" that is about obesity, diet (as in eating habits, as well as over viewing various "diet" books), and general health and well-being.

I figured why not...what are they telling kids about fat and obesity these days. This turned out to be the first in a series of 7 books (of which my library has exactly 0 of the remaining books), it's a very broad overview of what "they" are calling the obesity epidemic these days.In many ways it's like Fast Food Nation or Supersize Me! but with out the gross stuff on animal slaughter (FFN) or the throwing up (SSM).

I think this is aimed at teens, but think that audience would be extremely bored by this book (it's only 100 pages...and well over half of that is splashy graphic layouts), I'd guess that older children 8-12 (ish) might like this book, as it would be easy to read and understand.I'd recommend trying to find any of the books in this series USED simply because they want nearly 25.00 a pop for them and they are not much substance for the amount of money they are charging for them.

In the world of kiddie books, this is about a B- Interesting if you buy into the obesity as a national epidemic or just want to give your kids a solid grounding in what is wrong with eating a lot of fast food. ... Read more

Product Description
Dieting, Overweight, and Obesity: Self-Regulation in a Food-Rich Environment examines why self-regulation of weight is so difficult for many people. In light of the fact that overweight and obesity has been increasing so dramatically that the World Health Organization has declared it a global epidemic, author Wolfgang Stroebe explores the genetic, environmental, and psychological influences on weight gain. The author explains the history of bodyweight standards, details the emotional and physical consequences of being overweight, and explores the various treatment and prevention plans for obesity. In reviewing the numerous psychological theories that explain people's problems with weight, Stroebe points out that each does not take into consideration the desire for palatable food.He then presents the goal conflict theory which assumes that chronic dieters who have difficulties in controlling their weight often disregard bodily cues of hunger and satiety not because they are unable to recognize them, but because they do not want to recognize them. Their eating behavior is dominated by a conflict between two incompatible goals: the goal of enjoying palatable food and the goal of losing weight. This book gives readers a comprehensive understanding of the issues involving weight gain and dieting. Psychologists and medical professionals in the field of weight management will find this book to be an indispensable resource. ... Read more
