Product Description
Do you know about the Doomsayer? He's the guy dressed in raggedy clothes, hanging around on street corners with a cardboard sign that reads, "The End Is Near!" He's always ready to tell you that mobile phones cause cancer, air traffic fatalities are up this year, and locusts are poised to swarm the city. Having OCD is a lot like having this character living inside your head. He's with you all the time; he knows your deepest fears, and he's not afraid to use them. You try to brush him off at first, but he's so sure of himself, so persistent that you find yourself taking his proclamations to heart. And you worry--a lot. Is my cell pone giving me tumor? What about those locusts? The anxiety of not knowing is unbearable. After a while, you start engaging in little rituals to keep the Doomsayer at bay. You wash your hands three times after you make a phone call. You check the garden once, twice, three times for locusts. You get little relief from your rituals, though. Soon the Doomsayer is onto that trick, and the doubting comes back with a vengeance.

What can you do?

A lot, it turns out. Coping with OCD offers a simple and engaging program that can get anyone with mild to moderate OCD started on the road to recovery. The book begins with a crash course on what OCD is--and what it is not. You'll learn to think realistically about their condition and how it is likely to change over time. The book proposes a three-part program for recovery that uses safe and gradual exposure to distressing thoughts and situation, mindfulness practice, and techniques to restructure thinking. Additional chapters address shame and blame, depression, and maintaining progress. The book includes a helpful list of resources for further reading and additional support.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best OCD book I've read!
I have read many books on the topic, and this is the most concise, complete, and supportive book I've come across. Another GREAT book, but much longer, is Obsessive Compulsive Disorders by Fred Penzel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and concise
I've read about ten books on OCD and many others on anixety in general, I've found this book to be much less intimidating than some because it offers alternatives to Exposure Response Prevention which can be helpful for some, but it can also but too difficult for others depending on what type of OCD they have and how severe it is.This book incorporates some ideas of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in a way that doesn't pick one over the other but pulls out helpful ideas and techniques from both. The fact that it is relatively short doesn't mean that it doesn't have much info, it is just organized well and easy to read. ... Product Description
Over one million children and adolescents in the US suffer from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), a baffling illness that can be debilitating for the child in school, with friends, and family. In this uniquely creative and heart-warming book, Dr. Wagner uses the powerful metaphor of the Worry Hill to describe OCD and its treatment clearly through the eyes of a child. Children and adults will identify with Casey's struggle with OCD, his relief that neither he nor his parents are to blame, his sense of hope about recovery, and eventually, his victory over OCD. This is the only OCD book for children and adolescents that has companion books for parents (What to do when your Child has OCD: Strategies and Solutions) and for therapists (Treatment of OCD in Children and Adolescents: A Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Manual). The metaphor of the Worry Hill is a common thread that weaves through all three books. These books provide families with tools of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the gold standard of treatment for OCD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource for children whom may have OCD
I have clinically significant OCD and have lived with it most of my adult life. I have started seeing some of the same traits in my son. Because I want to help him as a child and therefore lessen the symptoms later on in life, I asked my psychologist what resources he would recommend for children. He recommended this book to me, probably for 2 reasons;
1) it helps children learn that there can be help for what they are feeling or thinking in a non critical way.
2) The author lives here in Rochester NY and I could see her.

We read the story 2 times now and I have to admit that he does not show the symptoms highlighted in the book as of yet. Mostly what he is going through right now is minor and may be developmental for his age. The story did strike home with me though which I enjoyed thoroughly. I had just recently fallen off my bicycle (read the book to understand the metaphore), and the light hearted hope filled message is just great for kids and even adults. OCD sufferers tend to feel hopeless and anger at their odd thoughts or behaviors. This book through a very simple and fun story helps the children to understand the thoughts or rituals are ok, but they do not need to entertain them anymore. It introduces the basics of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and even mentions meds that may also be helpful "training wheels".

If you find your child doing rituals, withdrawn or other symptoms see a psychologist or psychiatrist and see if it may be OCD. If so, get this book as the first step in your and your child's education of the matter.

Highly recommended, thanks for reading my review.

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend
We just found out that my 11-year-old son has OCD.We had not told him because I didn't want him to feel like he had something wrong with him.Our counselor suggested that we order this book. When it came in I was so excited to read it with him.We sat down and started reading and I was asking him questions pertaining to what we were learning. At one point, he said to me "I have OCD."It was like a relief. He didn't feel bad and I think it helped him to actually put a name to what had been an ongoing struggle. We only read it once, because we try not to focus on the OCD, we got the help he needs and my son is thriving.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendously helpful
I'm the mother of an 8-year old daughter diagnosed with OCD. This book opened up new doors for us in treating this disorder. It has been perfect for her, and she actually wants to sit down with me to read it. I believe that giving her obsessions/rituals an actual name and introducing her to a child who struggles with similar issues is a major step in our road to living triumphantly over OCD.I strongly recommend What to Do When your Child has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder to go along with it--I ordered both and, along with my Bible, they have a home right next to my bed and already have worn pages!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunate events
We got this book the weekend my kids were going to their grandparents. I read it on the way to their house and it captivated their attention, both of them (ages 3 & 5). They listened to every single word intently and quietly. They loved the story of the boy and riding his bike up and down the worry hill. It is quite long though and my voice got a litte sore reading aloud for so long. At the end of the book, my son asked, "mommy who's book is that?" and I said "It's yours". He asked if he could write in it. The pages are black and white pictures like a coloring book. I told him he could color the pictures but not to color over the words so that I would be able to keep reading it to them. Unfortunately at Nana & Papa's house there was an accident involving water and the book so only half the book made it back. The cover was torn off and everything. I was so mad! I will probably re-order the book just because he enjoyed it so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
We were told by a Doctor, who hadn't even met my son, that he thought my son may have OCD.He was referred to the Child Mental Health offices in our local town and there was a 14 month waiting list!I decided to see what I could do as a Parent and I bought this book.I left it on the table and my son picked it up and read it - his initial reaction was "do you think I have OCD", I replied by telling him that I was interested in the subject as I didn't want to label his condition.Since reading the book he has come along leaps and bounds and his teachers said there has been a remarkable improvement in his confidence and his anxiety has gone! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Amazing!
This is a wonderful book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who suffers from disorders such as OCD.This is compiled of people's thoughts and feelings towards disorders.Even the shortest poem is filled with emotion, and each page will grab your attention and remind you that you are not alone.Every base is covered, thoughts and feelings that most people wouldn't admit out loud, but did for the sake of the book. This is just a collection of regular people speaking from the heart, which is what makes the book so realistic. My boyfriend has even read it to try and understand me better, and he loved every page, and hasn't made fun of me ever since because now he realized that some disorders are very hard to live with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book for those looking to understand OCD
I have read the first section of this book "Realism."

If you are looking to gain a better understanding of OCD or if you have friends or relatives have OCD I would heartily recommend this book to you. In my case it has given me a good view into the thought processes and struggles of those I know with the disorder.

I do not normally read short fiction and never read poetry, so the format itself of this book was a little bit foreign to me. I would like to say that not everything in this book is great on its own as literature, although I do believe there are some excellent works, but it is important to keep in mind that many of these contributors are not professional authors. They are normal people who are just trying to express their experiences with and about OCD. That too is where the true value is. You do start to see themes emerge in common from the different authors that give you good insight into OCD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Telling
This is a great book for those of us who do not have OCD but know or love someone with OCD. It lets you really see what it is like to live with the disorder. Very profound read, and I am wholly glad I purchased a copy. If you know or love someone with OCD this is an amazing introspective into their lives. I would very much recommend this book to anyone, whether you have OCD or know someone with it. ... Read more

Product Description
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is probably the psychiatric disorder for which most significant progress has been made on the last 20 years concerning pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic interventions. A number of studies have shown that OCD is much more prevalent than previously thought, occurring in an estimated 20f the adult population around the world. A serious discrepancy still exists between research evidence and clinical practice and an update of this evidence and an international debate on it, as provided by this volume, is long overdue. This revised edition provides vital information on a considerably underdiagnosed condition.

  • Provides accompanying commentaries by an outstanding line up of contributors
  • Covers developments in diagnosis, therapy, prognosis, economic evaluation and quality improvement

This book describes the ways in which reasoning can be applied to OCD for effective treatment regimes. It moves comprehensively through theoretical, experimental, clinical and treatment aspects of reasoning research, and contains a detailed treatment manual of great value to practitioners, including assessment and treatment protocols and case studies ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Proof is in the pudding: I BA and my Recovery from OCD
The recent collaboration by Kieron O'Connor, Frederick Aardema and Marie-Claude Peìlissier,Beyond Reasonable Doubt: Reasoning Processes in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Related Disorders, has inspired me to believe in the reality of Recovery from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).What the authors have developed in the text provides both inspiration and strategy for resolving the deep distress caused by OCD.I realize that Dr. Kieron O'Connor and his colleagues have developed this text primarily for the clinician, but I must say that the work sheets, exercises and training cards in Appendix 2, make the text user friendly enough for most any person with OCD to follow.I am motivated to write a review of this text for one very important reason: The authors treatment strategies have helped me to recover my composure from what truly can be a psychologically painful disorder.Their Inference Based Approach (IBA) has fulfilled my need for finding a strategy which can address my deeply entrenched obsessional doubt, which, along with the subsequent checking and repeating, has plagued my life for the past 30 years. While it was doubt which had led me to relapse again-and-again, after each of my Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) Intensives, the authors IBA model has helped me to see the doubt as the lead element within my `OCD Story' which seemed to justify the doubt.IBA did what ERP alone had failed to do; illuminate as `irrelevant' my doubt-generating `vulnerable self-theme'- my fear of punishment for making mistakes -in my imagination-based OCD story.IBA seems to work by presenting a process which FADES OUT the logical, yet out of context OCD story, while FADING IN an alternative, non-OCD story. In doing so, IBA helped me to find a way out of a very real living Hell.My new story includes ideas such as: I need not be prisoner to a 100% subjective and imaginary OCD story!I am eliminating the maybes which have driven my obsessive doubt in the past!Being grounded in the sense-based reality of the Here and Now, I have turned the page from the OCD chapter to the new Recovery chapter of my life.

The message of the text is clear: we can create a new story- an alternative, non-OCD story- to be lived, grounded in the `Here and Now' sensory aware reality of our lives! We need not get locked into a dysfunctional way of constructing our personal Universe! Replacing the imaginary story of OCD with an alternative, non-OCD story, drives a new way of being, where one experiences life sensually; through their senses, believing their senses, trusting their senses, honoring their senses and as one will see- responding in accord with their sense-based reality.Healthy living bases its judgment on real world evidence made clear by the senses. In IBA, when the person manages to integrate the different steps, s/he understands OCD as essentially confusing `imaginary possibilities' with `real probabilities'. When we align our lives with what is `probable', over the `imaginary possibilities', and trust our senses, we position ourselves to recover from this disorder. When the person with OCD accepts this message, they no longer need fear the imaginary maybes which have driven their OCD in the past, or need to neutralize for that matter, since they now know the problem was an imaginary story taken as real.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is one of the most commonpsychiatric problems faced by children, although frequently notdiagnosed or treated. Many children diagnosed with OCD also turn out tohave other brain-based disorders, particularly ADD/ADHD. Childhood OCD can be a truly debilitating disability, not just a minorproblem or personality quirk. Children with OCD experience extremeanxiety and embarrassment. Their OCD symptoms often prevent them frombuilding good relationships, from achieving their best in school, andfrom having a normal childhood. The effects of this disruption can bepainful and lifelong. The good news is that OCD is very treatable. Obsessive-CompulsiveDisorder helps parents:

To the outside world, a child who exhibits anobsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)--manifested by constant counting, cleaning, checking, or hoarding--often seems "tuned out" fromreality. But for the estimated 3 million-plus people driven to performsuch ritualistic behaviors, just the opposite is true: most arepainfully aware of their heightened perceptions. Left untreated, achild with OCD can suffer from debilitating anxiety and embarrassment, far beyond the normal levels most healthy kids experience during theirschool years.

Author Mitzi Waltz presents a superior guide on thiscomplex neurological illness, with thorough and thoughtful attentionto every subtopic imaginable: causes; consequences; diagnosis(including rare conditions and related disorders); therapeutic, medical, and alternative intervention; insurance issues; schooling;and transitions. Each chapter reads easily as it unravels theintricacies associated with OCD, but never sacrifices detail. Mosthelpful are Waltz's comprehensive list of medications (includinggeneric names, side effects, known interaction hazards, and specialtips), her critical chapter on the turbulent school years, and theresource section that includes the Children's Yale-Brown ObsessiveCompulsive Scale for assessing symptoms. Herself the mother of twochildren diagnosed with OCD, Waltz speaks candidly, empowering parentsto make critical choices for their child's treatment and to employsuccessful coping skills for daily living. Her opinions--and thosequoted from parents traveling the same road--offer additional, firsthand knowledge that smartly supports eachtopic. 5-0 out of 5 stars An encouraging, enlightening and hope-filled place to start
When my child was diagnosed (finally--after years of "knowing" something was wrong, after years of professionals being evasive or rude)this was the first book I turned to, and it filled both me and my child with hope. It's a fantastic overview and resource written in a clear yet intelligent style. The Yale-Brown scale is extremely helpful. The list of medications found to alleviate symptoms was helpful (and occasionally cautionary--a good heads-up for when doctors get goofy perscribing). The list of resources, including newsgroups, web sites, meetings, is great--there are others out there...lots!The section that deals with co-morbid conditions was helpful, too.A great overview, with a tone that will calm a frantic parent, and bring a family up to speed for their newly-diagnosed child--so good that years later, we still have it on our shelf and refer to it often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on helping kids with OCD!!
This is the only book I've found that covers everything about OCD in kids, including dealing with it in the family and at school. The parts on therapy and medications are very thorough, but it goes way past just the medical stuff. Product Description
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by obsessional thinking, compulsive behaviour and varying degrees of anxiety and depression. Studies have shown OCD to be one of the more common psychiatric disorders, with a lifetime prevalence estimated at 2%-3%, approximately twice that of schizophrenia. OCD is also considered to be one of the most disabling of psychiatric disorders (and medical disorders for that matter) and presents a tremendous economic and social burden, both for the individual/family and for society at large. There has been a recent increase in research in the field of aetiology, neural substrates and cognitive effects of OCD that are likely to lead to advances in treatment. Part of the Oxford Psychiatry Library series, this pocketbook provides clinicians with a succinct and practical introduction to the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of OCD and OCD-related conditions. Individual chapters cover the phenomenology, psychobiology, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy of OCD.The book also includes a helpful resources chapter, including reproductions of the major rating scales used to assess patients with OCD (Y-BOCS, CY-BOCS, DY-BOCS, and CGI) as well as information sources for both clinicians and patients. The book serves as an invaluable quick reference for clinical psychiatrists, trainee psychiatrists, psychiatric specialist nurses and other mental health care professionals, as well as interested general practitioners. ... I've just been officially 'diagnosed' with OCD, and found this book to be very helpful to someone 'new' to finding info about OCD. This is the first OCD book I've read, and plan on reading others in the same category soon. The book's structure is a question/answer format.Chapters discuss symptoms, related disorders, diagnosis, causes, medications, various therapies, and other ways to help yourself and how others can help you. It's very easy to read and very detailed... no long case stories (just a few short examples), but rather straightforward information about OCD. Some of the information is repetitive towards the end, but that's not necessarily a bad thing because it fits well into the content. ... Read more

Product Description
In this intimate and engaging account of his struggle with obsessive compulsive disorder, television celebrity and Obsessive Compulsive Foundation national spokesperson Marc Summers redefines the disorder by showing its positive aspects.

As the host of Nickelodeon's Double Dare and Family Double Dare, two of the sloppiest game shows on television, it was Marc Summers's job to be cheerfully splattered with goo. While smiling on the outside, however, inwardly Summers was consumed by anxiety. It wasn't until preeminent psychiatrist Dr. Eric Hollander appeared as a guest on Summers's Lifetime talk show that the source of his distress became clear: like an estimated 6 million Americans today--that's one in forty adults--Summers suffers the effects of obsessive compulsive disorder.

Everything in Its Place has been written for the many functional people battling OCD in silence, people who do not identify with popular profiles of OCD sufferers as bizarre, mentally ill victims. Extending beyond a memoir, clinical study, or how-to manual, Summers's book explores positive aspects of the disorder that can actually foster success.

For the millions of people who suspect their strange quirks are symptoms of the disorder, Summers clarifies the differences between superstition, caution, and real OCD. For those who have OCD and think they're alone in the world, he sets a positive example with his personal success. Informed by the latest research findings as well as the unique perspective of the doctor who made Summers's own symptoms manageable, Everything in Its Place is a book on OCD unlike any other. ... Although his OCD is on a much greater scale then my own it was something I could relate to. I would recomend this book to not only those with OCD, but those who don't have it. It really gives you a better understanding what OCD really is.

Product Description

This unique volume gives readers a front-row seat at an exciting and crucial symposium.

Recent advances in theory and treatment have significantly increased our understanding of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Yet research on OCD generally falls in categories of either behavioral or biological, and rarely do the two meet. Concepts and Controversies in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder bridges this gap admirably. Featuring an international panel of 42 experts, this volume focuses in depth on—and presents opposing viewpoints to —the seven conceptual and practical disputes that characterize the field today:

- categorical versus dimensional perspectives on symptoms

- animal versus behavioral models

- single OCD entity versus OCD spectrum

- neuropsychiatric versus cognitive-behavioral models

- cognitive therapy versus exposure therapy

- self-directed versus therapist-directed treatment

- medication versus cognitive-behavioral therapy

These issues are presented in a debate format, with each side contributing a position paper on the topic, followed by a rebuttal from the opposite perspective. To further enrich the debate, timely chapters examine special areas such as sexual addictions, body dysmorphic disorder, trichotillomania, Tourette’s syndrome, and compulsive shopping in the context of OCD.

This level of discussion and argument, with its possibility for collaboration and integration, makes Concepts and Controveries of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder unique and productive reading for students, researchers, and therapists of all orientations as they design the next generation of theory and greater nuances of treatment.

For years our family didn't know how to deal with this problem. It seemed like anything we did could set off my sons ocd. This book showed us what we could do (and couldn't do) to help.At times the book has a hard edge to it And gives advice that some people rather not hear, but our family needed toread & hear what was written, and as a result we are all doing better.A must if someone with ocd is making you crazy.

1-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS BAD!
This book gave ZERO help. I bought it to give to my in-laws as a "basic" info book aobut OCD. i would have sent them screaming away if they ever had a chance to read it. It is all about the"steps" of AA (alcohol annon) and NOT about OCD.

DONT BUYTHIS!IT STINKS!

Among the most prevalent and personally devastating psychological disorders the development of a cognitive approach to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) has transformed our understanding and treatment of it. In this highly practical and accessible book, Jonathan Abramowitz presents a model of OCD grounded in the most up-to-date research that incorporates both cognitive and behavioral processes. He then offers a step-by-step guide to psychological treatment that integrates psychoeducation, cognitive techniques, and behavioral therapy (exposure and response prevention). Unlike other manuals for the treatment of OCD, this book teaches the reader how to tailor the choice of techniques and delivery modes for individuals presenting with a wide range of specific OCD symptoms, such as contamination fears and cleaning rituals, fears of harm and compulsive checking, symmetry and ordering, and severe obsessions with mental rituals. The techniques are illustrated with numerous case examples; clinical forms and handouts are provided for use with patients. 5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful in dealing with any disorder, not just OCD
In the five years that I have been involved in support groups for the partners of people with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), I have read maybe 150 books on mental health.

Many of these books explain clearly and sometimes even eloquently themanifestations and treatment issues related to AD/HD, OCD, bi-polar disorder, anxiety, depression and the host of comorbidities that are often traveling companions. If your loved one has any or several of these disorders, part of taking care of yourself and your family is learning the facts so you can "come out of the fog" -- the confusion and disorientation that living with a person's mental disorder can often bring. Some touch on how the brain conditions affect loved ones.

This book, however, is the only one that deeply, directly and specifically addresses the needs of the person whose loved one has a brain disorder. That it does so not with pithy platitudes and tales of woe but with profoundly wise, compassionate, and practical concepts strikes me as pretty rare. Not to mention life-changing.

The writing is clear and engaging, but I especially appreciate the way the book is organized. By the time people find a book like this, they often need all the cognitive clarity they can get, and this book provides it. No ponderous narratives to wade through here. Instead, each chapter is organized by questions the reader might have and that Gravitz inspires, starting at the simplest concepts and progressing to the more complex. For example:

--How will you know if your loved one has OCD and if it is severe enough to warrant professional attention?
--What causes OCD? Is it a biological diseases? Is it genetic? Is it just in the person's mind?
--What is home like in a familiy under the influence of OCD?
--What needs to occur in order for the family to recover?
--What strategies can you use to help yourself?
--What can you do when your partner refuses treatment?
--How will you know if you are enabling?

If you're looking for"tips and strategies" to deal with your family member's disorder, you'll find some of that here. But for people who are ready to grapple with the core issues and move towards deeper healing, this book delivers like none other I've seen. It is an inspiration.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
I read Over and Over Again several years ago. It's not a bad book to explain OCD, but there are better ones out there.

Over and Over Again contains the usual information: What OCD is like, some case examples, treatment options, and the like. Obviously, since it was written and published some years ago, there is new information out there. Still, this will serve as a great reference.

If you write articles or books on OCD and wish to cover the history of treatment, Over and Over Again will be useful to gain information from the past.

However, while it's interesting reading, if you're looking for the most up-to-date information, search for something more recently published.
