Product Description
Obsessions are involuntary thoughts or feelings that arise repeatedly in a person's mind and are often described as worries by children. Most children over age 8 are aware that their obsessions are abnormal, and, consequently, they are often embarrassed and uncomfortable talking about them. Children, like adults, may exhibit unusual behaviors related to their obsessions. Perhaps one out of every 200 children under the age of 18 has obsessive compulsive disorder, and it is estimated that half of all the adults with the disorder first began to experience its symptoms before age 18. It is unfortunate that many children with the disorder are either not diagnosed or are incorrectly diagnosed because effective treatments are available. In this guide Dr. Johnston explores the problem and the many treatments. ... Read more

Product Description
This study uses the complex symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder to reveal new insights about three of the most prominent novels of the last half of the nineteenth century, Herman Melville's "Moby-Dick", Emile Zola's "L'Assommoir", and Thomas Mann's "Buddenbrooks". What may have seemed like a persistent idiosyncratic behavior pattern to Realists and Naturalists, has now been identified as a disorder with attributes that have been observed for centuries and are still difficult to treat. Following an in-depth description of the relevant components of OCD, the novels and their characters are analyzed in the context of this prevalent psychiatric disorder. Melville, Zola, and Mann identified increased anxiety in nineteenth-century society and they doubted the autonomy of human behavior. These writers applied their accurate intuitions of a psychological syndrome as a means of exploring the philosophical concepts of fate and free will and their relationship to control. This work argues that the characters in these three novels constitute psychological case studies that can be applied to the understanding of OCD.It contains a literary analysis that provides insights into these literary masterpieces, and demonstrates the close interaction between medical science and literature. ... Product Description
Now that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can often be successfully treated, it is being increasingly diagnosed and studied. Major advances have been made in our understanding of its causation, symptomatology, and treatment. Most OCD patients are relatively normal people who can be helped to lead completely well adjusted lives, once this disorder is remedied. They usually respond best to a combination of drug treatment with behavioural therapy. This report contains practical advice for doctors on the recognition and management of OCD - for the ultimate benefit of their patients. ... Read more

Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in ill-defined psychiatric disorders which are often difficult to detect and consequently problematical to treat, such as Myalgic Encephalitis, postviral fatigue syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome. Such subthreshold disorders are frequently presented first to the primary care physician. This book reappraises the old related concept of neurasthenia and its relevance to modern-day general practice. ... Read more

In the span of a decade, the research image of obsessive compulsive disorder has changed from that of a little known, poorly understood neurosis to one of the most exciting frontiers in psychiatry. It is now recognized as being a common disorder, mainly associated with intrusive, obsessional thoughts or recurrent strong promptings to perform ritualistic behaviour. The ruminations and compulsions cause marked distress and are so time-consuming as to interfere dramatically with normal daily life. Presented here is authoritative and comprehensive coverage of the most recent and significant advances in the basic research and clinical investigation of obsessive compulsive disorder. ... Product Description
Examine the fourth largest mental health problem in America—OCD—and how YOU can help!

Since obsessive-compulsive disorder affects 2.5% of the world population, someone you know is likely to have this disorder. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Guide for Family, Friends, and Pastors is a handy "physician's assistant" that not only provides a fresh overview of OCD but also focuses on the issue of scrupulosity—obsessive-compulsive anxiety over scruples in self and others—as a religious issue. Written by a pastoral counselor who is also a clinical social worker, this book will help you gain insight into the psychological and neurological dimensions of the disorder, the problems of those suffering from OCD, and the development of support groups.

Written with extensive knowledge and deep compassion, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Guide for Family, Friends, and Pastors presents the latest information available on OCD and its effects upon sufferers and their personal relationships. The information is discussed in both pastoral as well as therapeutic aspects, explaining OCD in the brain, then continuing with ways to help a sufferer manage the conflict. Special attention is paid to the issue of scrupulosity—"seeing sin where there is no sin"—which is especially symptomatic for many Roman Catholics, Orthodox Jews, and Orthodox Muslims. Filled with insightful case studies and a useful bibliography, this book helps you understand OCD from all sides while giving effective strategies for individual and group therapy.

In Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Guide for Family, Friends, and Pastors you will find:

answers to the most frequently asked questions

detailed explanations of terms

insightful information on pastoral caring

an in-depth exploration of scrupulosity

helpful information on trichotillomania (hair pulling), kleptomania (stealing), Tourette’s syndrome, body dysmorphoric disorder (hatred of a particular body part), and hypochondriasis

case studies highlighting personal and relationship issues

resources for further information on OCD

A Guide for Family, Friends, and Pastors is for pastors, pastoral counselors, chaplains, lay ministries, social workers, psychiatric nurses, marriage counselors, and for anyone who cares about someone with OCD. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Better books out there
Some good input, but not from a traditional Christian perspective. I found "Can Christianity Cure Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder" by Dr. Ian Osborn much more helpful and historically informative. Also, from a traditional Catholic perspective, books by Dr. Joseph Ciarrocchi are very good. This is the third book I've purchased by Robert Collie and I've found all of them to be wanting, both from clinical and religious perspectives. It may be due in part to his writing style, but I feel like offering that is generous. I found myself consistently asking questions about how he supports/explains his statements and feeling discontent with what I read. ... Read more

Product Description
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is the term given to a condition characterized by recurring obsessive thoughts or actions. These thoughts or actions are involuntary and are often a response to a deep-rooted fear. This introductory book, richly illustrated with case examples, explains the nature and treatment of OCD in children and adolescents. OCD has been little discussed in relation to this age group, although it is now believed that approximately 1 per cent of all children and adolescents suffers from serious obsessive disorders. Written for parents and relatives as well as doctors, teachers and other professionals working with this group of patients, From Thoughts to Obsessions defines OCD and forms a straightforward explanation of the symptoms, assessment procedures and treatment strategies. Per Hove Thomsen also examines obsessive features which may form part of normal adolescent development as well as the relationship of OCD to other psychiatric conditions. ... Read more
