Excerpt: Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives (June 14, 1909 April 14, 1995) was an American actor, writer and folk music singer. As an actor, Ives's work included comedies, dramas, and voice work in theater, television, and motion pictures. Referring to Ives's singing, music critic John Rockwell said, "Ives's voice ... had the sheen and finesse of opera without its latter-day Puccinian vulgarities and without the pretensions of operatic ritual. It was genteel in expressive impact without being genteel in social conformity. And it moved people." Ives was born in 1909 near Hunt City, an unincorporated town in Jasper County, Illinois, the son of Levi "Frank" Ives (18801947) and Cordelia "Dellie" White (18821954). He had six siblings: Audry, Artie, Clarence, Argola, Lillburn, and Norma. His father was at first a farmer and then a contractor for the county and others. One day Ives was singing in the garden with his mother, and his uncle overheard them. He invited his nephew to sing at the old soldiers' reunion in Hunt City. The boy performed a rendition of the folk ballad "Barbara Allen" and impressed both his uncle and the audience. From 1927-29, Ives attended Eastern Illinois State Teachers College (now Eastern Illinois University) in Charleston, Illinois, where he played football. During his junior year, he was sitting in English class, listening t...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=158061 ... Read more

From the author: Patients undergoing systemic chemotherapy and/or head and neck radiotherapy frequently experience treatment side effects. Oral complications are among the most common problems associated with these therapies. These sequelae include mucositis, oral hemorrhage, infection, and xerostomia (dry mouth). Occasionally, oral complications are so severe that the cancer treatment must be reduced or even terminated. By providing comprehensive care, nurses work to help prevent, identify, and manage these oral sequelae, and thus maximize quality of life. Limiting the effects of oral sequelae increases patient adherence to treatment protocols, improves the quality of life, and increases the odds of long-term survival.

Product Description
Cancer of the oral and pharyngeal mucosae is a major public health problem in many parts of the world, and dental caries and periodontal diseases are almost universally prevalent.Nevertheless severe oral disease exists in only a minority of any population, and the three volumes comprising Risk Markers for Oral Diseases set out to characterise the at-risk groups and define markers by which they may be identified. Reviewing epidemiological, clinical and laboratory data, these volumes point the way towards improved diagnostic and prognostic testing, an exciting and rapidly expanding aspect of dentistry. Knowledge of the risk factors for oral cancer has lagged behind that for dental caries or periodontal diseases, and this volume provides a wide-ranging survey of the most promising fields of investigation. In addition to the well known aetiological role of tobacco and alcohol, leading research workers from both the dental and the basic sciences review the role of diet and nutrition, infective agents and immunological mechanisms in the genesis of oral cancer. The contribution of modern molecular and cell biology is authoritatively explored, and the scope for improved screening and prevention is an underlying theme throughout the book. ... Read more
