Product Description
Osteoarthritis affects over 20 million Americans and is the most common degenerative disorder in the United States. It causes more disability than any other degenerative disease and is occurring in epidemic proportions throughout the world. In this novel approach to understanding and treating osteoarthritis, orthopaedic surgeon Peter Bales highlights the nutritional connection to this painful and debilitating condition, Dr Bales focuses on new genetic research, which shows that the same poor nutrition responsible for causing increased inflammation in our bodies, along with epidemic rates of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, is also fuelling the development of osteoarthritis. Among the topics discussed are the following: the mechanisms by which our joints become destroyed. The culprits are increased inflammation, increased oxygen free radicals causing our joints to 'rust' from chronically elevated blood sugar levels and hormone imbalance. Dietary strategies to decrease the production of oxygen free radicals, and to turn off genes that lead to cartilage breakdown.Joint nutrients that can combat osteoarthritis and specific dietary recommendations for the treatment and reversal of osteoarthritis based on the more current genetic and nutritional research. The disadvantages of treating osteoarthritis with drugs and the exciting promise of using nutritional intervention that directly affects the expression of our genes. The only book to emphasise the link between poor nutrition and osteoarthritis, this important new approach to an often disabling disease offers hope for arthritis sufferers and will be of interest to anyone concerned about good health. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars more evidence that our nation's food habits are wrong
Osteoarthritis is one of those disorders which, like hypertension, you don't notice until a lot of damage has already been done. So for many this book will come too late. The word healing appears in the title so maybe in cases that are not too far advanced it is possible to arrest and/or reverse the damage.
As I read the chapter on metabolic syndrome, I got to thinking that symptoms associated with it: 1. increased abdominal fat 2. increased blood fat -- triglycerides greater than 150 mg/dl 3. decreased HDL 4. increased blood pressure 5. increased fasting blood sugar -- greater than 110 mg/dl may be too high to warn of impending arthritis. Instead, it might be better to tighten those readings and use them as alarms that go off when they even approach the high end of "normal". For abdominal fat, for instance, getting down to one half inch or less should be the goal rather than below forty-inch waistline. Bales doesn't say that, but I just did. Bales is a physician and maybe it would be difficult for him to go against the establishment by recommending revisions to the "normal" readings. I'm thinking earlier warnings are better than waiting for the pain when severe damage has already been done.
What Bales tries to show is how diet and some supplements can prevent osteoarthritis. Many of his recommendations are similar to those of author Joel Fuhrman, author of Eat to Live. But, the word osteoarthritis does not even appear in the index of Eat to Live and Bales goes into depth about how a bad diet actually causes reactions in the body that lead to destruction of cartilage. It is this detail that makes his case so convincing. He presents it, as much as possible, in a fashion that should be understandable by the layman. If more detail is desired, one can look up the terms he uses on the internet for a much more scholarly discussion.
Bales recommends 20 supplements. I would research them more. For glucosamine and chondroitin, for instance one recent study indicates that each by itself is effective, but taking them simultaneously seems to have no effect. Also, with fish oils which Bales recommends, Joel Fuhrman says in Eat to Live page 171 "Though a little more expensive than fish oil, plant-derived DHA is less rancid. High-dose fish oils are still much safer than the medications used for autoimmune illnesses, so if they help I would not discourage their use." In general, I like to see multiple sources for information regarding health issues -- the second opinion if you will. So researching each supplement would be in order for me.
By the end of the book when he summarizes his dietary and supplement recommendations he has made it abundantly clear that the increase in the incidence of osteoarthritis is mostly due to bad eating habits and an irresponsible food industry. Recently I saw the movie Food, Inc. which shows how the food industry creates a bad diet and then convinces us to eat it. My current reading also includes Foods to Fight Cancer by Richard Beliveau. I highly recommend it. It complements Bales' book nicely. There is a sort of synergy in reading them both. It increases the likelihood that one will make dietary changes for the good.
Bales' book has an appendix with a List of Inflammatory Compounds, a Glossary, Chapter Notes with references, and an index.
While Bales does mention exercise there are no specific recommendations beyond the usual half hour a day, five times a week of cardio and strength training. So if you're looking for an exercise book that is suitable for osetoarthritis sufferers, look elsewhere. Strong Women and Men Beat Arthitis by Miriam E. Nelson et al is one such book. But while I agree with much of what they say, they omit some things I have found helpful. Reviewing it is on my to do list.
All in all, Osteoarthritis Preventing and Healing Without Drugs is an excellent read for anyone interested in improving their diet as well as for arthritis sufferers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Health collections will find this a wonderful guide
Peter Bales, MD, MHSA's OSTEOARTHRITIS: PREVENTING AND HEALING WITHOUT DRUGS discusses everything from how joints become destroyed to how nutrients can combat osteoarthritis. Dietary recommendations accompany surveys of drugs, surgeries, and how nutritional intervention affects genes. Health collections will find this a wonderful guide.

Product Description
Water Exercises for Osteoarthritis contains over 100 individual exercises and examples of exercise routines. It is richly illustrated with over 500 pictures so the reader can see all of the elements that go into an exercise program: equipment, warm-ups, stretching, aerobic exercises, strength exercises, balance exercises, exercises focusing on the abdominals, neck exercises, and cool downs. Included, also, is information on medications, vitamins and minerals, herbs, diet, and nutrition.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting over 21 million people in the United States. As Americans age, the number of people affected is expected to increase to 40 million by 2020.

The pain of osteoarthritis causes people to stop exercising and leaves them vulnerable to all of the health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle. Luckily, water exercises provide a way to reduce the pain and stiffness of arthritis. At the same time they increase endurance and strength.

Rather than making osteoarthritis worse, exercise actually helps you get better physically and emotionally. The physical benefits of water exercise include easier movements and more energy. The psychological benefits include increased independence, less depression and anxiety, and an overall feeling of well being. Water Exercises for Osteoarthritis will help you get all of this and more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars water exercises
It is a Water Exercises for Osteoarthritis: The Effective Way to Reduce Pain and Stiffness, While Increasing Endurance and Strengthvery good exercise book for those of us who have osteoarthritis. Many usual exercises.would recommend for those who have similar problems and like to use the water because of less impact of hurting joints.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exercise is great for OA
This is a very complete book of exercises.Any exercise done in water is much easier on the joints, yet works the muscles wonderfully.I'm sure these exercises will bring some pain relief and increased mobility; but I haven't yet been able to try them, due to other health problems.I'm looking forward to getting into the pool, with my book on the deck.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just not written well
While some of the exercises in here are good, a lot are very poorly described, and the book is extremely inconcise throughout. Another issue is the book assumes the reader will be using a pool in a rehabilitation facility. A great deal of the exercises are impossible without a deep-water pool. Many are impossible in an above-ground pool. A great deal are ineffective without pricey aquatic exercise equipment. A number require a pool long enough that one could swim laps.

My main complaint, however, is the photography. The models used in the book, unfortunately, are not the sorts of people who inspire one to do the exercises in the book. While there's something to be said for showing pictures of the target readership performing the exercises, it doesn't work well for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
The book has many illustratons.

I wish that they had cross-refrenced for osteoarthritis joints. If you're focused on other body parts, you have to select the exercises.

But it's an excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Water Exercise Improves Quality of Life
This aquatic exercise book is full of information and easy to use. Many of my questions were answered about the connection between arthritis, other chronic diseases and the quality of my life. This book is a useful tool for designing an individual program that includes exercise (endurance, flexibility, and strength), diet, and alternative remedies.I have taken Ann Rosenstein's advice and developed an individual exercise program that is enjoyable and interesting. I am more flexible and stronger. The quality of my life has improved, and I am enjoying life again! ... Read more

Product Description
Osteoarthritis afflicts about 25 million people in the United States--two-thirds of all people over 65--and the numbers will only grow in the coming years as baby boomers age. Yet few who suffer from this disease know much about it--how to relieve the pain, what exercises might help lessen their suffering, how to cut down on visits to the doctor. In All About Osteoarthritis, two leading authorities on the disease--Nancy E. Lane and Daniel J. Wallace--join forces to provide the most up-to-date and comprehensive discussion of osteoarthritis available, explaining what osteoarthritis is, how patients can help themselves, and how to find the best resources to manage the disorder. The authors offer information in a clear and accessible style, with detailed illustrations showing how key joints--knees, hips, fingers, backs, hands, and necks--degenerate. They take readers through the steps of diagnosis, how the body is affected, and ways to manage the disease. In user-friendly language, they describe all of the established treatment options, including new medications and their side effects, and help readers determine when surgery may be necessary. The authors also examine alternative treatments, clarifying which work, which may work, and which definitely do not. And they outline recent advances in the field and discuss where these breakthroughs may lead us. While osteoarthritis most acutely affects the elderly, it starts years before, and many people suffer the aches and pains of the condition well before old age. For aging baby boomers, much can be done before osteoarthritis becomes chronic and debilitating. This comprehensive guide will provide an excellent resource for patients and their families, caregivers, and medical professionals.Amazon.com Review
Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease, is the second most common cause of disability (and most common after age 65) in the United States, yet few patients know much about the condition or effective management strategies for it. All About Osteoarthritis aims to educate patients about what osteoarthritis is and how to cope with it.

Nancy E. Lane and Daniel J. Wallace, both rheumatologists and leading authorities on osteoarthritis, explain the disease in detail over 13 chapters, including chapters targeting the spine, upper body and extremities, and lower body. Diagrams clarify the medical descriptions. Next, 11 chapters cover management of the disease, including assistive devices, exercises (illustrated), medications, local medical therapies, and surgery. The authors discuss dietary supplements briefly, explaining which ones have supporting research.

The information is comprehensive and credible, but the style is dry ("in order to have arthritis, there must exist a problem with bones, joints, cartilage, or their supporting structures," for example), lacking the warmth, pep, and personality of most self-help health books. Recommended for arthritis sufferers who want current, credible information about their disease and don't mind an academic style. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Important information
Although the website that goes with this book is far below par - the information offered in this book is excellent.Especially the supplements - who know that not all supplements have rigorous testing standards and that so very few supplements even have what they say they do.Great book, great advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars the arthritis cure
When I developed arthritis I went to the library to research it That's where I discovered the Arthritis cure Realizing that it was written by an orthopedic surgeon convinced me to buy a copy and follow his recommendation, and it worked This is my second or third copy as I have given them to friends troubled with arthritis.

4-0 out of 5 stars hope for the hopeless
This well written and authorative book has given me hope in my battle with arthritis.I'm following the recomendations and using the products mentioned in the book and am seeing positive results.Although my hips are probably to far gone to benefit from the program (per discussion in the book), I'm hopeful that I'll be able to protect the rest of my body from arthritis.

The section on the effects of prescription drugs alone makes this book worth reading. How many of you are aware that it is believed that Celebrex, an effective pain reliever, contributes to joint deterioration?
And, did you know that 16,000 people in this country alone die yearly from using NSAIDS?

The author reviews many commonly used drugs for arthritis relief and tells what works and what may be dangerous to you.

Stan Adamson 52 - osteoarthritis patient and double hip replacement candidate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably appropriate for every osteoarthritis sufferer
In the past ten months, I've burned through over $100k in insurance benefits, pursuing what conventional medicine offers for osteoarthritis. In that time, the disease has rapidly and progressively degenerated joints in my neck, shoulders and hips to a point that I am almost completely bed-ridden. Conventional medicine has not only done nothing whatsoever to aleviate the disease or the pain, it has addicted me to morphine and Duragesic (80 times more potent than street-level heroin). I turned to this book out of desparation.

The book states clearly and early on, that conventional medicine doesn't know what to do for osteoarthritis OTHER THAN to mask the pain with narcotics. The position of conventional medicine - i.e. most A.M.A. practitioners - is that osteoarthritis is a normal part of aging and once it occurs, there is nothing that can be done for it. This book contends that is absolutely wrong.

The book puts forward a very compelling argument that by following a nine point systematic approach, the heart of which is a regimen of daily glucosamine and chondroitin together with ASU, osteoarthritis can not only be stopped in its progression, but the symptoms actually reversed. The book is wonderfully and powerfully written and I think maybe, the best hope and option for osteoarthritis sufferers.

How am I doing since going onto the 9-part program espoused by the book? Well, I've only been on the glucosamine and chondroitin for about three weeks. I haven't been able, as yet, to locate a source for ASU, and I haven't yet implemented any of the the other 8 parts of the cure - though I will be doing so within the next few days.

Have my osteoarthritic sypmtom abated since I started the program espoused by this book? Sad to say, no. However, I am truly convinced that as I factor in the other 8 parts of the cure and give it another month, my pain will decrease, I will regain range of motion, and I will regain function again.

I believe this is an excellent book and very much worth a read by every sufferer of osteoarthritis.

4-0 out of 5 stars title is misleading, but advice is great
The title is unwisely chosen, close to a cheap shot, designed to get the attention of people in pain. This is unfair, and diminishes the total effect of the book, which is well researched and documented for a book for a lay audience. It is very helpful to have all the information on glucosamine and condroitin together, with an exact plan. Very useful is the attention paid to the lack of quality control in choosing nutritional supplements. Dr. Theo provides excellent advice on how to choose wisely, and how to avoid poor or deceptive formulations. ... Read more

Product Description

According to conventional wisdom, arthritis pain is an inevitable part of aging. Not so, says Dr. Grant Cooper in this practical, accessible guide. For those who do develop osteoarthritic conditions, this book offers a blend of commonsense advice, dietary info, targeted exercise, and tips on useful supplements. According to the author, sufferers can often entirely avoid the use of medication, injection therapy, and surgery — approaches that, when necessary, can be used as an opportunity to return to exercise and nutrition to slow the disease’s progress. The book features easy, illustrated exercises, including aerobics and strength training, that can be done at home, at a gym, or under a trainer’s or physical therapist’s supervision. Nutritional and supplement strategies — including glucosamine and fish oil — are presented in detail, along with suggestions for ways to keep on track. Dr. Cooper not only explores each topic in depth but explains how it fits into an overall holistic treatment program.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Grant Cooper is an excellent writer and a masterful teacher.
Dr. Grant Cooper is an excellent writer and a masterful teacher. His book is better at making arthritis understandable than, for example, Arthritis for Dummies. Furthermore, it is shorter and more readable than the "Dummies" title.

Dr. Cooper spells out all the key concepts in the first chapters; he goes into detail later.

The sections on nutrition, dietary supplements and exercise are particularly strong. Pages 95-107 are devoted to specific exercises, with photos. I wish Dr. Cooper had included some aquatic exercises in this section but I think I understand why he didn't. He stresses that the best exercises are the ones people will actually do.

Exercises that can be done at home are certainly the most convenient. Still, I think the next edition of The Arthritis Handbook should be expanded to include specific aquatic exercises, illustrated by line drawings.

I recommend The Arthritis Handbook as an excellent "first book" for arthritic patients. You'll learn, for example, why your joints are so stiff upon getting out of bed in the morning, why a good diet and regular exercise are so important and what causes the pain and inflammation in arthritic joints.

Working at New York's "Beth Israel Medical Center" in the Orthopedics Department, Dr. Grant Cooper specializes in the care of people with spine, sports and musculoskeletal problems.

"The Arthritis Handbook" is a five-part, 224-page book that will change the lives of arthritis sufferers everywhere. Dr. Cooper has broken it down to a combination of three vital elements. These three elements are diet, exercise and carefully selected supplements to a healthy diet. Dr. Cooper shows you how you can do much more to ease your pain than just taking pills. He does not advocate discontinuance of such drugs as are prescribed; he just gives the reader alternatives.

In Part I, he defines:Osteoarthritis and how it develops in the human body. The role obesity plays in damaging the cushioning properties of cartilage. How the additional weight puts undue pressure on these joints, causing damage to the cushion. Part II deals with nutrition and the benefits of eating a healthy diet. Grant stresses such things as more fruits and vegetables, less red meat and more fish. The depth and concise detail that these topics covered kept me very interested. I enjoyed the way he explained the diet and what each part played toward a healthy body.

Part III explained the importance of exercise and the types of exercise one should do to help ease the pain of this disease. He covers this portion of the book with many photographs and an in-depth discussion. So in-depth is his coverage of this important area that he dedicates about a third of the book to it. Stretching, Strength Training, Aerobics, specific knee and hip exercises and lifestyle changes are just some of the topics covered.

Part IV describes what Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate are and what part they play in the health of the human body.Part V is the one we all fear, "Medical and Surgical Options." Dr. Cooper gives an insight into medications, injections and surgery. Explaining the benefits and drawbacks of these procedures, he lets the reader know what can be expected.

I thoroughly enjoyed this amazing book and recommend it highly to anyone that has this disease and wants to know more, or has a loved one that has this crippling debilitator. "The Arthritis Handbook" is very well written and presented, in-depth examples and explanations, good pictures and quality printing earned this book my highest A+ rating. Buy it, read it and live well by following Dr. Cooper's recommendations.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding comprehensive review
Dr. Cooper has provided an extensive comprehensive review that all people may benefit from.Very clearly written easy to understand and easy to refer back to again and again.Would definitely recommend to all people of all ages. The average layperson all the way up to a medical professional may find this book extremely useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Encouragement to Take Charge of Osteoarthritis
In the Arthritis Handbook Dr. Cooper presents a take charge approach for individuals suffering with osteoarthritis. His plan focuses on managing the symptoms of osteoarthritis using nutrition, exercise, and dietary supplements, while recommending surgery and medication only when other approaches have failed.I am most impressed that Dr. Cooper recommends complimentary approaches to managing arthritis such as the practice of Tai Chi, which is also endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation.

The book is not a typical arthritis help book - it is peppered with personal and cultural references that are as informative as they are amusing. The book also includes a glossary to help readers understand medical terminology and a list of websites for readers to learn more about osteoarthritis. Overall, the best aspect of the book is that it encourages patients to communicate with healthcare professionals, and notes key times when patients should seek professional advice.

Despite the fact that the information in the book is sound, the book is somewhat disorganized and at times seems to be addressing two separate audiences. Also, I would have liked to have seen a detailed reference list of the studies described in the book.Ultimately these stylistic shortfalls do not detract from the promising message of the book - osteoarthritis can be managed by lifestyle changes that are described in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, practical, excellent
The Arthritis Handbook is an easy read and very informative. If you have osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis), you need to read this book.It explains what osteoarthritis is, and how you can take simple steps to treat it.The nutrition and exercise sections are excellent. The pictures make following the exercises very easy.Other treatments, like supplements, medications, injections, and even surgery are discussed in language that I could easily follow.I enjoyed reading this book and think you will, too.I wish I had found this book years ago! But, better late than never. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Book gives natural remedy to STOP OSTEOARTHRITIS PAIN
Natural remedy greatly reduces pain associated with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia.Books give insight into a natural remedy for arthritis pain--and it's free! Jacksonville, Florida, September 10, 1997: Baby boomers may think they can have it all. But as they age, they might get more than they bargained for, specifically, two debilitating forms of arthritis called osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. While many have turned to nutritional supplements for the "cure," these are not approved by the FDA and are not substantiated by clinical trials. "There is a natural remedy that many are unaware of," reported Harris H. McIlwain, MD, a Florida-based board certified rheumatologist and gerontologist and coauthor of Stop Osteoarthritis Now! Halting the Baby Boomer's Disease (Simon & Schuster Publishing) and The Fibromyalgia Handbook (Henry Holt and Company). The treatment?A combination of conditioning and strength-training moves that almost anyone can do. "Exercise is the easiest and most guaranteed way to ease pain and stiffnessassociated with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia--the two most common forms of arthritis," McIlwain said. With increased years, the chances of getting osteoarthritis increases, as the body becomes less efficient at repairing itself. After age 50, 80 percent of America's population is affected to some degree with osteoarthritis, showing signs of pain and stiffness. Likewise, more than 10 million Americans have fibromyalgia, mostly women ages 40 to 55, which causes deep muscle pain, depression and fatigue. "Imagine what 50 years of use and 200 pounds of weight can do to your muscles and joints," McIlwain said. "But this exercise program will help to maintain a normal weight and keep aging muscles strong and joints lubricated. For fibromyalgia patients, exercise will reduce deep muscle pain, ease depression and promote healing sleep." McIlwain believes in this treatment so strongly that he developed a step-by-step treatment and prevention plan for his patients. The activity-based program he promotes helps to stop these forms of arthritis and gives patients a higher quality of life. "I even see elderly patients who, by staying on this exercise and strength-training program, are able to feel great improvement with reduced pain in just a few weeks," McIlwain contended. "Many have delayed or prevented worsening of arthritis with this plan." Helping the body heal itself with exercise is fully described in McIlwain's latest books, Stop Osteoarthritis Now! Halting the Baby Boomer's Disease and The Fibromyalgia Handbook, as well as in his Winning Series--Winning with Back Pain, Winning with Arthritis, and Winning with Osteoporosis (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.). Product Description
'Osteo-arthritis does not kill, it merely tortures. It seems often to attack those people who have led active lives, and are otherwise the most healthy. Perhaps this is why one sees so many sufferers among the very old, and perhaps too, there is some mythical justice which forces the otherwise healthy to learn fortitude and patience through suffering.' This is a frank, and at times amusing, account of the 20 year long suffering of the author, and her methods of overcoming the debilitating effects of osteo-arthritis. She makes it clear that she has not found a cure, but has found relief through treatment and exercises, hoping that this book will provide useful information for fellow sufferers, and will encourage others who are not yet suffering to such a degree, to seek early treatment. This work aims to summarize clearly the current concepts in the surgical treatment of Osteoarthritis of the knee, including High Tibial or Femoral Osteotomy, Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty and Total Knee Arthroplasty. This book can be read at different levels: basic chapters are particularly dedicated to non-specialized or junior surgeons, rheumatologists, radio logists and physiotherapists. More specialized aspects dealing with difficult cases and controversial topics are dedicated to highly specialized surgeons. Numerous chapters focus on difficult cases in primary TKA, such as TKA on stiff knees, TKA in case of severe deformity or TKA following HTO or failed UKA. Strategy and options in revision TKA are also discussed in the second part of the book. Thanks to its didactic approach, the reader will find quick answers to technical or conceptual difficulties. 1-0 out of 5 stars awful translation
There is no doubt that the authors are highly competent and experienced surgeons and this book should have been excellent. I bought it sight unseen and that was a big mistake. The english is appalling- more like pidgin- and this renders it unusable for native english speakers. It should have been so simple to get a good translation so it baffles me that they produced something like this. ... Read more

The word "cure" in the title is a bitmisleading, but this book certainly makes a persuasive argument infavor of treating osteoarthritis with two common nutritionalsupplements--glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates--and following aprogram emphasizing better nutrition and exercise. The supplements arecommonly used in Europe and Asia, where they've been tested indouble-blind, placebo-controlled studies (the gold standard formedical research). They haven't been thoroughly tested in the UnitedStates, the authors contend, because drug companies can't patent thesupplements and thus won't fund the research. The book also contains achapter detailing a seven-step arthritis-prevention program. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic Info that Can be Found on the Net
Much of this book is page filler, it advocates Glucosomine and Chondrodin Sulphate as its main "cure" and then talks about eating foods high in antioxidants (which is really old basic info that we can find in plenty of books and websites). It is also very repetative, I remember reading the same subject three times near the beginning (page filler.)

Although the book is helpful, especially for really ignorant newbies who hate the internet, it needs to be thinned out and the common knowledge parts taken out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Arthritis Cure : The Medical Miracle
I injured my knee around Labor Day and four months later I had minimal results with physical therapy and NSAIDs. My once active life had stopped, every activity I tried, even walking, aggravated my knee. I started on the Glucosomine and Chondrodin Sulphate program along with the vitamin supplements outlined in the book and had great results. After just a few weeks, I am able to hike and workout again. I feel better than I have in months! I know several friends on Glucosomine, but I felt better with the book outlining the dosage and other vitamins to compliment. I have not needed any NSAIDs since I started this therapy. I like that this program has almost no side effects and can help my injury without surgery. Try it for yourself, what do you have to lose but the pain?

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile and perhaps more
This was followed by Maximizing the Arthritis Cure (1998) which I'll also report on here, treating both books as one.My initial reaction was, this is either a public service or a hustle.Written by three differentlaureled academics and obviously put together by committee, this first bookwas a big time best seller and demanded a sequel. Most of the diet advicewas like something I had read twenty years ago.The exercise programditto. The use of glucosamine and chondroitin was the real difference.Infact, the purpose of the book could be seen as legitimizing the use ofthese supplements in the treatment of osteoarthritis.People bought thebook in the hope that it would help them with their pain. They also boughtthe book so that they would be motivated to try glucosamine andchondroitin. Many people understandably would not try the supplementswithout the seal of approval provided by an authoritative book like this. The question is-and it is the big question-is their program any good, or isit just another feel good pep talk fronting for another bogus approach? Iwas a little uncertain since the book jacket was red, white and blue, andwe all know the quote about patriotism being "the last refuge of ascoundrel."

So I tried glucosamine and chondroitin and stayed fairlyclose to their overall program. Two years have passed and although Icannot say for certain, it is my belief that the supplements are valuable. At any rate, my arthritic knee is much improved.

In the follow-up book, the authors give information on other treatments.

I have to say that Ithink they've done a positive service in writing these two books.Theinformation about healing in general and about prevention and about thepositive effects of exercise and attitude are worthwhile. The authors mayhave made megabucks (or maybe they didn't), but I don't feel they rippedanybody off, on the contrary.I am happy to be positive even though Istill think "cure" is probably too strong a word for what their program cando, although I only have my own experience to go on.Their reports of thedouble blind tests that have been conducted are good, but a long way fromconvincing proof that glucosamine and chrondoitin and exercises can cureosteoarthritis.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Arthritis Cure
After reading this book by Dr. Theodosakis, I recommended it tomy grandmother and 35 year-old girlfriend, both of whom haveosteoarthritis. Not only has it lessened grandma's pain, but also her depression has largely lifted. My friend, who is a fellow registered nurse, was thrilled that she was able to stop taking acetaminophen following her second month of taking glucosamine and chondroitin. She believes the dietary changes she made after reading the book were also helpful toward making her body more supple, like a slinky.I was indeed surprised to find some negative comments written by readers.Perhaps they were victims of the many fraudulent products our there with insufficient quantities of glucosamine and chondroitin in them.I found Dr. Theo's website to be very helpful in learning more about specific good and bad products.I will continue to recommend this book to anyone and everyone who tells me that they suffer from arthritis. There is hope!END

5-0 out of 5 stars The Arthritis Cure : The Medical Miracle That Can Halt, Reve
I found this book an excellent presentation on glucosamine, chondroitin, the various surgical options, advice about exercise and diet (the importance of weight loss, etc). For me it seems to be working asadvertised. I have osteoarthritus of the hip and knee and am seeingnoticeable improvements.I have a friend that is a physical therapist andshe has been using glucosamine/chondroitin and has noticed significantimprovements in the use of her ankle and her ability to walk. Certainlyglucosamine/chondroitin are not replacements for everthing as diet/weightloss are also extremely important. I recommend this book highly. ... Read more

Product Description

Designed to be a practical handbook on clinical trial management in these key therapeutic areas, 'Clinical Trials in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis' is aimed at principal investigators pharmaceutical physicians and other pharmaceutical staff involved in the design, conduct and monitoring of these increasingly complex diseases.

In the last several years a new classes of biologic agents have emerged and changed the treatment paradigm for patients, not only with classically defined rheumatoid arthritis, but also with other related diseases such as ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis.  Furthermore, osteoarthritis is a major disease state that is often treated by the rheumatologist, but is one where patient management programs are currently limited with a need for new therapeutic approaches.

In both inflammatory and non-inflammatory arthritic conditions, clinical trials have become both large and complex due to the nature of the diseases, with ever-challenging new surrogate end-points being employed.

Topics covered in this title will therefore include study design, clinical endpoints, technical issues, data collection, use of centralized medical image reading facilities and biochemical marker laboratories, as well as data analysis and future therapies.  This book takes the user through the process step-by-step from start to finish, also providing a background on the regulatory guidelines, ethical implications, endpoints, and current therapies.
