Product Description
This is a "must have" reference book for patients, parents, caregivers, and libraries with medical collections. This sourcebook is organized into three parts. Part I explores basic techniques to researching osteoarthritis (e.g. finding guidelines on diagnosis, treatments, and prognosis), followed by a number of topics, including information on how to get in touch with organizations, associations, or other patient networks dedicated to osteoarthritis. It also gives you sources of information that can help you find a doctor in your local area specializing in treating osteoarthritis. Collectively, the material presented in Part I is a complete primer on basic research topics for patients with osteoarthritis. Part II moves on to advanced research dedicated to osteoarthritis. Part II is intended for those willing to invest many hours of hard work and study. It is here that we direct you to the latest scientific and applied research on osteoarthritis. When possible, contact names, links via the Internet, and summaries are provided. In general, every attempt is made to recommend "free-to-use" options. Part III provides appendices of useful background reading for all patients with osteoarthritis or related disorders. The appendices are dedicated to more pragmatic issues faced by many patients with osteoarthritis. Accessing materials via medical libraries may be the only option for some readers, so a guide is provided for finding local medical libraries which are open to the public. Part III, therefore, focuses on advice that goes beyond the biological and scientific issues facing patients with osteoarthritis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for older patients
Found the book to be perfect for my parents who are a bit shy of the internet. One was recently affected and wanted to start researching osteoarthritis, and this book put them in the right direction and made it easy. I would not recommend the book to someone who wants a basic understanding of the affliction (this is easy enough on search engines), but someone who want to know everything and know where to find it (trials, new inventions, etc.). It makes most sense to someone new to the disease and researching a medical topic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
This whole series of books is garbage. The information in the books is copied verbatim from health sites anyone can get for FREE on the internet. If you think it is bad when college students cut and paste information into their term papers, what do you think of cutting and pasting an entire book from the internet and then charging people a lot of money for it?I think it is a scam and the M.D. and Ph.D. who put their names on the cover should have their degrees revoked.

Don't waste your money on these books. You would be much better off going to a reliable health portal on the internet. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Osteoarthritis is the most common joint pathology which primarily affects the older population. The disease is characterized by unique pathological changes in some synovial joints, predominantly affecting the articular cartilage, but also entire joints, including the synovial tissue and subchondral bone. The remarkable growth of research on normal and abnormal biology of tissues in the articulating joint, including the application of novel molecular biological approaches and new imaging techniques, is reflected in this volume. It describes the current state of knowledge and helps to further understand the etiopathology of osteoarthritis, hopefully leading to early detection of the disease and novel treatment modalities. The volume contains contributions and discussions from a select group of investigators, all experts in this field, who met at the conference "The Many Faces of Osteoarthritis", held in June 2001 at Lake Tahoe, to acknowledge Klaus E. Kuettner and his contributions to osteoarthritis research.

Product Description

Bone and Osteoarthritis places emphasis on the molecular and cellular events that lead to osteoarthritis, stressing the role of subchondral bone, which distinguishes this from other books on the disease.

A novel aspect is the attention given to the possible epigenetic basis, together with a discussion of the genetics predisposing to osteoarthritis.

Detailed analyses are given of the role of the synovium, of the molecular mechanisms that lead to degradation of the cartilage matrix, of the hypertrophy of the cartilage cell, of the anabolic and catabolic roles of cytokines, may lead to novel approaches to clinical treatment, utilizing anabolic mediators or molecules that target steps in the disease process. Also discussed are animal models and how mechano-responsiveness is compromised by mechanical injury.

Orthopedics and rheumatology have become close conceptually, as advances in bone and joint biology have enabled bench and translational scientists, as well as practitioners, to approach clinical problems comprehensively. Because bone plays a role in initiating osteoarthritis, therapeutic approaches focusing on bone tissue are included in the discussion of novel treatments. The general topic of osteoarthritis is therefore a timely subject for a series on bone biology.

This book, intended for clinicians, researchers and students, provides information that will orient the novice and update the specialist. No other book treats the relationship of bone to osteoarthritis in similar fashion or provides a comparable underpinning of joint pathophysiology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fibromyalgia sufferer is helped
I have been suffering from Fibromyalgia for over 15 years.Once I went on the ER4YT diet, my over-all health improved vastly... except I still suffered occasionally from Fibromyalgia.I bought this book, followed the diet & went on the 12 week arthritis protocol that he recommended. Not only did the pain subside during the 12 weeks, but also for the past year it has been much more manageable. The most difficult thing was finding the supplements in the dosages that Dr. D'Adamo recommended.Through the help of the internet I found all of them - most of them from Vitacost.com.It still amazes me that after a year of going on this protocol I am still doing so well.I am an O non-secretor. ...
