Product Description

Things break all the time.
Day breaks, waves break, voices break.
Promises break.
Hearts break.

Every expectant parent will tell you that they don't want a perfect baby, just a healthy one. Charlotte and Sean O'Keefe would have asked for a healthy baby, too, if they'd been given the choice. Instead, their lives are made up of sleepless nights, mounting bills, the pitying stares of "luckier" parents, and maybe worst of all, the what-ifs. What if their child had been born healthy? But it's all worth it because Willow is, well, funny as it seems, perfect. She's smart as a whip, on her way to being as pretty as her mother, kind, brave, and for a five-year-old an unexpectedly deep source of wisdom. Willow is Willow, in sickness and in health.

Everything changes, though, after a series of events forces Charlotte and her husband to confront the most serious what-ifs of all. What if Charlotte should have known earlier of Willow's illness? What if things could have been different? What if their beloved Willow had never been born? To do Willow justice, Charlotte must ask herself these questions and one more. What constitutes a valuable life?

Emotionally riveting and profoundly moving, Handle with Care brings us into the heart of a family bound by an incredible burden, a desperate will to keep their ties from breaking, and, ultimately, a powerful capacity for love. Written with the grace and wisdom she's become famous for, beloved #1 New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult offers us an unforgettable novel about the fragility of life and the lengths we will go to protect it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Ugh
I am aJP fan, and I was looking forward to reading this book. The author is good, but formulaic, and this book felt like most of her others. I like the author's style, but after reading this book, I think I am going to take a break from her for a while. This book was an exact copy of My Sister's Keeper; the similarities were obvious from the very beginning. Now, I loved My Sister's Keeper, so, even though it was obviously the same exact story, I kept reading because I enjoyed the story so much the first time around... and I thought at some point the story would take a turn and break away from being a clone of the previous book. However, it did not. It was painful to get through this book, and I wanted to just be done with it so many times while reading it. The whole Marin Gates storyline was irritating and boring, and I did not understand the point of all the recipe chapters. I didn't read a single one, save the very last one ( only because it happens to be the very last page of the book) , and they seemed totally irrelevant to the story - I mean, like I said, I skipped over all of them, and they had no bearing on the plot! And, last but not least, THE ENDING. Oh my God, Jodi! STOP with these terrible endings! You are writing for women! Give us a happy ending for once! Gah!Not only was this ending terrible, it was so abrupt and out of nowhere. I was literally sitting there with my mouth hanging open from the shock. I wanted to take back every wasted minute of my life I had spent reading this book. If an author can Jump The Shark, I'd have to say Ms.Picoult did when she wrote this book. It's time for a new formula, JP- Move out of New Hampshire, step away from the courtroom, and please for the love of God stop giving us this same damn ending. You can still stick to your "famly drama" storylines, but please mix it up a little bit!!!! I beg you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost the same.
I haven't read many Jodi Picoult books, but the few i have read seem to have a lot of the same plots. A lawsuit, relationship problems, sisterhood... it's all the same. And yet i can not put down her books. She is usually very good at twisting her stories, but not so much this one.

I have to admit, this was not my favorite book of hers so far. It was almost kind of boring. Details felt rushed and everything was predictable. A lot of the story seemed cut-off. Some of the things that went on in the book never had an actual follow up, leaving you to ask yourself 'what happened?' It was extremely disappointing.

Also, a lot of the main ideas of the story never tied in together. They seemed very spread out, and random. It caused me a lot of confusion because there were so many unrelated plots. Her other books were more connected, which had made it a lot simpler to comprehend.

The ending came out of no where. Everything had come to a mellow halt, even though the book hadn't been very dramatic at all, and then a giant scene erupted from thin air, turning the book into something it honestly wasn't. It came as a bad shock. And after, there should have been something more than there was. Something that told you what had happened in return.

The only thing i really found interesting was the disease by the name of Osteogenesis Imperfecta that Willow had. It's a quite rare sickness in which I find to be strange. I had never heard of it before, and this book really opened my eyes.

If you desire a Jodi Picoult book, you may want to find a different work of hers. This book wasn't her best.

3-0 out of 5 stars The formula didn't work this time; the "kicker" never kicked.
Fans of Ms. Picoult's will recognize all the players - the sacrificial mom, the distant dad, the (former) friend, the invisible older sibling, and the "issue" person him- or her-self. Throw in a specious medical reference never mentioned again, a lawyer with her own issues, and a contrived ending that still shocks, and you have this book.

As I mentioned in other review of Jodi's works, she is really good at what she does. I am made to care about these people, and I read to find out what someone's heart condition has to do with any of this, or when will that lawyer find her birth mother. I care about the loose ends as much as the major things.

This book seemed contrived though, as good as it is. The contrived ending especially sticks out.

Fans of Ms. Picoult will like this one regardless of all the "Coinkidinks" and issues that crop up.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not her best
It was okay...I was disappointed. Someone in my book club picked it and I usually like Jodi Picoult but this one wasn't very good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't handle at all!
I won't say, as some reviewers have, that I will never again read another Jodi Picoult, because I've read many of her books and hope that the badly conceived and written Handle With Care was simply an aberration born of burnout. From a legal and moral standpoint, I was offended by the entire premise. Wrongful-birth lawsuits simply should not be allowed on the grounds that it's bad public policy to tell a person that he or she never should have been born. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars SYNOPSIS BACK -COVER:
Quentin

By Kerry Kenihan

Published by Penguin 1985

206 pages with photos

Quentin Kenihan's bones are as fragile as eggshells. Born with severe osteogenesis imperfecta, he has experienced, in his ten short years, at least 160 fractures.
Until he was four, his parents accepted specialists' opinions that Quentin would never walk - mere gravity would shatter his bones. It was claimed that nothing could be done for him. Four years later, not only had Quentin achieved mobility, but had developed into an intelligent, witty and stubbornly independent boy.
Quentin's story is inspiring for its courage and determination. His mother's frank telling of it gives a moving insight into the dilemmas and hopes of families with disabled children.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a book about a boy with osteogenesis imperfecta.
I am writing to say that I don't think the review from the person in Yugoslavia is about this book. I read it many years ago, and am sure it is not about about a boy going to Alaska to kill a bear with his bare hands. It is a true story of a boy who has OI (brittle bone disease). Verytouching.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gripping Story of a Handsome Lad
Quentin is the heartbreaking story of a good kid done wrong. After graduating from a suburban high school he travels to Alaska with some friends. In Alaska, however, he almost gets eaten by a grizzly bear.Inorder to save himself and his cherished friends, he slays the beast withhis bare hands. . . Much to the dismay of the enviromentalists.OhMy!

Thus begins the journey of young lad confronted by danger at everyturn. In Argentina, he wrestles a alligator, in Thailand he swims withsharks and in Colorado, he out-skis an avalanche.Gripping stuff.Amodern day robin hood. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars superb
From back of book:

Born in 1916, Jane Hess Merchant was the author of more than 2,000 poems published throughout the United States, Canada, and Great Britain. The Saturday Evening Post alone published more than 100 of her poems. Among her most successful works was her book "The Greatest of These", judged the best book of poems by the National League of American PEN Women. Although best known for her religious poetry, Jane Hess Merchant also wrote about nature, family, and other subjects.

Born with osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle-bone disease), Jane had been confined to a bed since she was twelve years old. By age 23 she had become completely deaf at 30 she was nearly blind.

When she died, she left a legacy of letters and unknown poems, many of which appear for the first time in this book "A Window on Eternity". Author Sarah Oftedal uses these pieces to help tell the inspiring story of Jane's life.

The book also include a foreward by Ruth Bell Graham. ... Read more
