Product Description
“What makes this inspiring medical memoir stand out is the courageous measure of Austin’s humanity.”—Publishers WeeklyIn this eye-opening account of life in the ER, Paul Austin recalls how the daily grind of long, erratic shifts and endless hordes of patients with sad stories sent him down a path of bitterness and cynicism. Gritty, powerful, and ultimately redemptive, Something for the Pain is a revealing glimpse into the fragility of compassion and sanity in the industrial setting of today’s hospitals. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Expected more ER
As an ER nurse, I enjoyed the (rather sparse) patient stories and understood the author's need to tie in his personal life with the evolution of his career. However, toward the end, I felt as though I knew much more about the dynamics of Dr. Austin's family (and his circadian rhythm) than the nature of his medical practice.Could we not have been spared the nauseating, middle-aged husband-and-wife sex bit?Given that you are the father of three children, we were well aware at that point that you had sex with your wife, Dr. Austin. The visual was both unnecessary and unwanted. Please stick to the ER next time.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little detached
Not entirely satisfying, but sufficiently interesting to keep me reading.

I understand his premise - the necessity of achieving a healthy balance between compassion and detachment to be a good ER doc, and to be a good mate and parent. I regret that in the telling of his story, the more removed persona predominated.

I did enjoy his description of the royal hierarchy in the surgical field. And the little mating dances that must be conducted to get a specialty doc to come to the ER.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inveterate reader of nonfiction.
Not only does Paul Austin, a truly Renaissance man, allow us an inside look into the workings of a busy emergency department, he does so with skill and unspeakable honesty.

5-0 out of 5 stars A honest recount
I am not in the medical field but love all medical books. I loved Paul's look into being an ER doctor. He was extremely honest about dealing with all stresses of being an ER doctor. They should make all new ER doctors read it. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Medical Student's Perspective
Dr. Austin writes an engaging narrative that is full of introspection and a good eye for critiquing himself and the field in general. As a medical student with previous exposure to many EDs (emergency departments) across the country interested in entering emergency medicine, this book is invaluable. It avoids the pitfalls of many other medical books that often get mired in the diagnostic and biomedical intricacies of the individual cases presented and approach the subject with a good eye towards his personal experiences and struggles.

I found it highly engaging and would recommend it to every medical student interested in emergency medicine. It is realistic, brutally honest, easy to read yet well written.

Thank you Dr. Austin!

5-0 out of 5 stars Life changing
I purchased this book about 8 years ago after having debilitating back pain for 15 years.I did not work for 3 years due to the pain and stiffness (spasm).I had tried everything, massage, PT, exercise, injections, epidurals, rest, ice, heat, had MRI's, went to pain clinics.I was told I had degenerative disc disease.I could have a fusion but it might not help. I could not sit for more than 15 minutes at a time.My life became very restrictive and I missed a lot of functions and travels with my family because the price (back spasms) was too high to pay.I saw Dr Brownstein on a TV show and I purchased his book.I started with his back program slowly and took to heart the section on stress and emotion and back pain.It all makes sense but I never connected it before.I realize now that I can get back pain with stress as that's my weak point physically. His book has given me tools to manage and control my response to the stress and pain.I don't have long periods of incapacity as I did before.I feel more in control instead of my back controlling me.I do the exercises and stretching faithfully every day, even on vacation. My life has conpletely changed over the years. It has been slow but steady.I can now drive for 2 hours at a time.I can go on long vacations as I have learned to manage my back.My problems have not all gone away but the flare ups are fewer and last shorter periods of time. You need to stick with the program as it is not a quick fix but it really works.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helping so far!
I bought this book because I have been having back problems since a car accident 2 years ago. I've gone for massages and practice pilates- which have helped, but the tension and pain always seem to come back. A couple of months ago I started having a sharper pain in my back and looked for help online. I found this book!I have been stretching and doing some of the exercises every day and my back has definitely improved!I would definitely recommend this book.My back has loosened up and the sharp pain is gone. My back is still a little tense sometimes, but I am hoping that will continue to decrease- I have only been doing the exercises a few weeks.

5-0 out of 5 stars real help for back pain
I can't say enough to explain how great this book is: it works! I had severe back pain due to injury and arthritis - and this book gave me the tools for recovery. Even my physician keeps a copy to loan to patients. I have given copies to several friends and their results were also positive. Highest recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most important book I have read about back pain
I was in severe pain with three herniated disks at L3,4 and 5 when I ordered this book. I read it in pain when I could not barely walk. I was very emotional reading it as I was feeling despair and having a grim outlook on life. Back pain is not a terminal illness, but it feels like your life is over. As I got through the book, I realized he was 100% perecent right about the mind-body approach combined with stretching a healthy life. His medical approach also matched exactly what I was hearing from my physical therapist. His words resonated very deeply with me and I am much better now after many months of working on my natural healing. The main thing, there is no quick fix, only a long term committment and approach to a healthy back. Thank god for this book. I would have caved to surgery unnecessarily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Usefull!
We love this book! It's helped us out more than once with back pain.

My husband and I have both benefitted from this book.We owned a copy for years that we would loan out to others which we finally ended up giving to a man who has terrible back and neck problems.I would also be interested to try the other Egoscue books and DVDs.
At one point in time my husband had a desk that moved a dozen ways, an ergonomic chair, and a wrist brace on both arms...the resulting back, neck, and arm pain from heavy computer usage was not getting any better. He got this book and, as long as he does the e-cises, he feels great.
We both highly recommend this book.

Product Description
Part philosophical meditation, part cultural critique, The Body in Pain is a profoundly original study that has already stirred excitement in a wide range of intellectual circles. The book is an analysis of physical suffering and its relation to the numerous vocabularies and cultural forces--literary, political, philosophical, medical, religious--that confront it.

Elaine Scarry bases her study on a wide range of sources: literature and art, medical case histories, documents on torture compiled by Amnesty International, legal transcripts of personal injury trials, and military and strategic writings by such figures as Clausewitz, Churchill, Liddell Hart, and Kissinger, She weaves these into her discussion with an eloquence, humanity, and insight that recall the writings of Hannah Arendt and Jean-Paul Sartre.

Scarry begins with the fact of pain's inexpressibility. Not only is physical pain enormously difficult to describe in words--confronted with it, Virginia Woolf once noted, "language runs dry"--it also actively destroys language, reducing sufferers in the most extreme instances to an inarticulate state of cries and moans.Scarry analyzes the political ramifications of deliberately inflicted pain, specifically in the cases of torture and warfare, and shows how to be fictive. From these actions of "unmaking" Scarry turns finally to the actions of "making"--the examples of artistic and cultural creation that work against pain and the debased uses that are made of it.Challenging and inventive, The Body in Pain is landmark work that promises to spark widespread debate. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal, eye-opening work of amazing diligence
This is a masterful work of philosophy that explores a too often neglected force in our lives. So much has been written about the mechanics and the physiology of pain, but so little -- at least in terms of accessible literature -- has been written about its psychological ramifications. With unbelievable dedication and insight, Scarry looks at the role pain plays in culture and identity, spending half of the book on its destructive dynamic in war and torture and half of it on the constructive dynamics in just about every other situation. My only complaint about the book is the disconnect between the two halves and the intriguing but too specific focus on the Bible for the second half. Scarry makes some excellent points here, but ultimately it would have been more educational to hear what she has to say about constructive aspects of pain in non-literary contexts. She talks a lot about the body and creation without relying on her analysis of pain in the Bible, but then it ends up not being enough about pain.

Regardless, an astounding work of philosophy that feels like a critical stepping stone in understanding the ways our imagination, culture, and pain interrelate.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Flawed
The Body in Pain includes many interesting ideas and theories that could be made into engrossing analyses, yet Elaine Scarry manages to even make torture boring. Her frankly very intelligent observations would be much better suited to a 20 page scholarly essay than a 300 plus page repetitive rant that seems to care more about displaying her verbal acuity than proving a point, let alone attracting readers.I have counted the number of times she uses the word "sentient" and "sentience": some pagesinclude these terms more than 8 times. One would think that an author so obviously bent on proving her intelligence would deign to consult a thesaurus.Perhaps "feeling" is too plebeian a termfor her....

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful in Working With Torture Victims
I have worked with several individuals who suffered extreme physical torture sometime during their lives. Scarry's work helped me to understand the internal world of the sufferer in ways I would never have even begun to approach. Each one of these individuals lacked the language to discuss their experiences. What they were left with was inarticulatable images, physical sensations, emotions, profound helplessness and alienation. Scarry's book helped me find language to give to my patients -- language that helped to normalize their reaction to, and experience of inexplicable events. Her exploration of the abyss of human destruction is accomplished such original, humane, and thoughtful detail. Her book is an ingenius work of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Densely written but rewarding treatise
Elaine Scarry's "The Body in Pain", an influential study on the relationship between pain, torture, warfare and creativity is a stunning achievement, from the standpoint of Marxism. I confess that I have not readthe sections on the structure of warfare, but I was extremely impressedwith the passages on torture. Scarry's central premise is that pain, aradically subjective, hence inexpressible and incommunicable experience, results, during the process of torture, in destroying, or deconstructingthe victim's voice (his or her power of articulation) and by extension, thevictim's world. It is the prisoner's pain, incommunicable becauseunsharable, which is denied by the torturer as pain but translated as thewholly illusory phenomenon of power, that of the torturer and the regime herepresents. These parts of the book are expounded with considerable insightand sophistication, in dense and convoluted prose. The second part, dealingwith how pain is converted to creativity, explains how the radicalsubjectivity and inexpressibility of the sufferer's pain is mitigated intothe objective (hence sharable and communicable) activity of work, which isa self-imposed, milder and socially more profitable form of pain. Thistreatise is absolutely vital reading for any one who aspires to seriouslydabble in literature, psychology or philosophy. A tour de force.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good but limited insights
What an odd and wonderful book! It attempts to address three topics -- pain/torture, warfare, and creativity. On the subject of pain/torture it is remarkably acute. The description of what pain is and what it does toconsciousness and life's enjoyment is terrific and, in my experience, unprecedented. Similarly, its description of torture and what torture meansis stunning in its immediacy. However, when it goes from torture towarfare, the book goes off the rails. It is clear that Ms Scarry has alimited knowledge of warfare and a very limited understanding of what itmeans and how it is carried out. Warfare is usually a last resort and ofteninvolves activity by those who are free against those who are trying tocreate and perpetuate some form of slavery. (see the work of Victor DavisHanson, e.g., The Soul of Battle.) This applies whether the war isconventional or nuclear. Her idea that taking the process of war to thecivilian population is somehow a function of nuclear war is simply wrong. This approach to war is thousands of years old and, as Hanson points out, important and -- in some contexts --virtuous. War is a horror, but it isbetter than slavery, torture, or conquest plus annihilation. Scarry doesn'taddress this. This book makes the experience of pain clear, but offers awooly and uncertain explanation of war. Its Marxist approach to creativityis shallow and forgettable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful
It can be toughest for parents to help kids cope with bullies and bullying in grade school, and this book particularly helped us deal with all sorts. Name-calling is probably the most common variety (indeed, even adults in public office commonly resort to this base tactic, when they lack substantive counters to valid criticism). But the potential barrage of bad behavior can also include exclusion and outright punching or worse.

This book helped our kids keep perspective during the worst of the playground battle years. Bullies can have a terrible effect, a message this book brings home in spades. It also has the potential to help not only the victims of bullying, but also those children so insecure that they become bullies to aggrandize their own weak self-images.

The end result is more respect for kids at both ends of the bully spectrum. this book helps teach children how to behave respectfully, and respond to those who do not. This is a great book, especially in grades two, three and four.

2-0 out of 5 stars good concept - but lacks practical advice
This is a book a child can read, and will gain comfort that he/she isn't alone in being bullied. I don't feel it fully addresses bullying or gives practical step - by - step advice. It doesn't provide several - step senarios. As in, if you've tried our advice and it didn't work, go on to do this next, if that doesn't work, do this next. I was hoping for a book that would address the issue comprehensively.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank heaven for this book!
This book was just what my 7 year old needed. No matter what advice I tried to give her, she was still filled with anxiety. This book spoke to her and really sunk in. Last night, she was crying. Tonight, after we read the book together, she was feeling stronger, practicing what she could say back to the mean girl, and had a confident smile on her face. I ordered 3 bullying books and this was by far her favorite. ... Read more

A helpful book. Easy read. No background in psychology/medical knowledge necessary to understand content. Book contains some grammatical errors- but editing could be better for 90 percent of literature on the market. 5-0 out of 5 stars READ THE BOOK, THEN BUY A "TENS."
Great book! But if his advice fails to help you, buy a "TENS" unit.
Definition: "TENS" is the acronym for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. A "TENS unit" is a pocket size, portable, battery-operated device that sends electrical impulses to certain parts of the body to block pain signals.

The electrical currents produced are mild, but can prevent pain messages from being transmitted to the brain and may raise the level of endorphins (natural pain killers produced by the brain).
The best "Tens" units " are made in England...The top 3 brands are: "Pain Solv" Pain Doctor" and "Pain Gone," which is a pen-like unit that does not use batteries and needs at least 40 shocks to the knee to get results. I own the "Pain Doctor" unit made by: "Win Health Ltd" and in only 5 minutes of use on my 2 arthritic knees the pain was gone for the whole day...Do a "Google" search for these products...if all else fails to work in the Doctor's informative book.

Not my favorite arthritis book.Too scattered in its approach.I was left confused and a little overwhelmed...but to be fair there is also a lot of very good information to be found within the pages...

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural therapies to end arthritis pain
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has arthritis and who wants to end the pain using a lifestyle approach. The good doctor has given a multifaceted and holistic program that teaches readers how to change lifestyle habits to decrease pain and become more active. The chapter on the PAIN-FREE ARTHRITIS DIET was extremely beneficial to me, as I have rheumatoid arthritis. I was not aware of the food/inflammation/arthritis connection, so this report is cutting edge compared to other books in print.

If you want to stop pain without relying on medications that can cause harmful side effects, then read this book. I guarantee it will change your life and pain--as it has mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for fibromyalgia/osteoarthritis/rheumatoid
If you wish you could ask your doctor questions about getting relief from arthritis pain and stiffness, you could find the answers in this book. Drs. McIlwain and Bruce offer incredibly reasonable and easy to understand suggestions for alleviating arthritis pain that is based on the latest medical journal studies. Pain-Free Arthritis gave me new insight into exercise as a method for ending pain--and it works! I've also found relief using the PAIN-FREE diet, focusing on fresh fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants and phytochemicals.

This book can help you to understand the various types of arthritis but, more importantly, it motivates you to take action to overcome the pain, stiffness and immmobility and reclaim your active life.

Particularly appealing to me was the information on natural therapies and botanicals, yoga positions for alleviating pain, and the advances in medications to end pain safely and effectively.

This book is extremely reader-friendly--and the program is first in the book, so you turn the page and find relief! It does not overwhelm you with medical verbage yet is well-researched. The program is sound and I highly recommend to arthritis sufferers of all ages.

I have osteoarthritis and I have been searching for something that can tell me WHAT REALLY WORKS to end this pain. I mean, I'm only forty years old but years of playing basketball has worn out my knees. This book is a superb program that details specifically what works for diff. types of arthritis such as knee or hip. The section on natural therapies was especially helpful and the chapter on cutting edge medications was great. I learned a lot--that I did not know and that my doctor never told me!! 5-0 out of 5 stars Best pain management tool on the market today!
I have had four spinal surgeries which have left me with daily back pain.I also have fibromyalgia and advanced arthritis in my knees.I have read many, many books, listened to CD's, watched DVD's and studied holistic pain management for several years now. This is quite simply the best method for managing pain that I know of today!Jon Kabat-Zinn knows of which he speaks!!!It takes discipline and practice, which Jon mentions on the first disc, but the effort is well worth the time spent!I highly recommend this CD set!Ann J. Georgetown, TX

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good.
This tape is interesting and somewhat effective/ Dr. Kabat-Zinn relies heavily on focusing on your breaths. This method is slightly uncomfortable for me but probably works well for others. |

I think his method is pretty effective for pain reduction or at least distraction from your pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ordering fromthe US. to Canada
I was unaware when I ordered that I could order these books from amazon.ca because I had only heardof amazon.com before and this was the first time I had ever ordered anything online. I'm quite unhappy that there was no message saying that these books were available from amazon.ca so not only did I have to pay for shipping from the US. to Canada but I also paid in US. funds. I should have been informed and given the choice. I feel taken advantage of and ripped off.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good intermediate work
I usually don't go for guided meditations.Often the person talking says things that are distracting or otherwise how I do not think. However this CD set is a good introduction to guided meditation in general and seems to be at least somewhat effective for pain relief. The program here is well done with appropriate voice, topics, and timing.I cannot think of a better place to start with this subject.

If you are adventurous then I would also recommend you consider other mediums such as acupuncture for pain relief.I have tried many modalities of healing and find acupuncture, when performed by a practitioner who also supports your time on the table with Qi Gong and/or aromatherapy to be very effective at many levels ... 5-0 out of 5 stars True to its title!!!
I suffered with 2 herniated disks in my neck for years from an injury that started when I was a teen ager. It was cronic (pain/suffering) after I crushed my neck on an overhead wooden beam. I was told by a Chiropractor, after 5 years of 'maintenance', that I should have surgery and never pick up anything over 10 lbs!! This was not an option nor practical for me! Then I read this book. The exercises have not only reversed my injury, but kept me from future problems! They are easy to learn, simple to do and not at all time consuming. I not only can carry groceries and laundry baskets, but I can move furniture and shovel the driveway (my 10 lb. dog loves it, too)! I fell accidently up a flight of stairs, landed on my hands and felt the impact go straight up to my neck/shoulders. I thought to myself, 'That's it! I will have the worst pain (in the neck) or terrible headache tomorrow!' The next day came and nothing!!! This is such a simple book to follow and has definitely lived up to what it says on the subtitle: A proven program for RECOVERY and Prevention! Enjoy getting well!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars You Can Relieve Neck Pain and Headaches without Drugs and Injections!
There is hope! I began reading Lisa's book at the same time I saw a spinal specialist for severe neck pain. The specialist offered me medications and injections (with considerable risks and side effects) and confirmed I did not have a condition that would prohibit exercise. It turns out that working at a computer all day, my posture had detriorated and aggravated the bulging discs in my neck causing months severe of pain and triggering migraines.

Instead of taking him up on those treatments which would continue indefinately and only be temporary, I began reading this book and following directions to correct my posture and the exercises. In just one week, I experienced considerable relief, and I am now, weeks later, I am having fewer migraines, back to a full exercise routine and sleeping through the night without pain. I'm also enjoying improved posture and have lost a couple pounds. Lisa's book contains excellent explanations about your anatomy that are easy to understand and will help you avoid pain. I now feel hopeful that I can control and prevent my pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Common Sense Tips That Really Work
Lisa's book is a must-read for anyone who has ever experienced back or neck pain - which I think is most of us!She provides common-sense tips that really work. She takes the reader through step-by-step instructions, with clear detail and great illustrations.Lisa is obviously extremely knowledgable on this subject but breaks it down so that a lay person can understand it.Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Practical Approach for Healing
A strong point in Lisa Morrone's book is her very practical approach--complete with photos!--to show exactly how to position and move the body for maximum benefit.

Another strength is Lisa's expertise. As an experienced therapist, she doesn't dispense armchair advice; she shares what has helped her patients!

Lastly--and to me, most importantly--Lisa goes beyond the physical element and includes the imporance of healing the whole person, including the spiritual element.I love that she not only recognizes the importance of the wholistic approach, but that she presents it in such a personable way.

After you read this book, you'll feel like you've made a new friend in Lisa, learned more about how the body parts (and spirit!) work together, and experience healing if you apply the information.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great overview
I bought this book in an effort to better understand why I was repeatedly injuring my back. The author does an excellent jobillustrating how we injure our backs and necks, which muscles we need to strengthen and what exercises we can do to get stronger. I like the clear simplicity of the book and the photos of the right and wrong ways to sleep, move, lift, etc. I would highly recommend it to a fellow back sufferer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life.
When I hurt my back 20 years ago, I was an active recreational athlete. Suffice to say I had to stop sports completely for while due to a back injury. After a few doctor visits, I had an MRI diagnosing "ruptured disk (aka bulging disk), disk degeneration." I did Physical Therapy for a while, it did help somewhat. But I re-injured it a year or so later, did another MRI, it showed more degeneration. My left foot went about 75% numb due to sciatica and I showed "medium-high levels to pain" on medical tests. So I got cortisone shots, they didn't help much. Then did an experimental minor surgical procedure with a well-known neurosurgeon ( it was a day procedure where they pumped out some of the disk fluid), and it probably made things worse. I then found a better PT,and with her guidance learned how to move more efficiently, work around the pain..but something was missing, I still hurt, though a good deal less.

Then I read this great and incite-filled book, realized how right Dr. Sarno is about the relationship between muscle tension and sciatica and back pain. And it made me realize how profit-driven the neurosurgeon had been, and how "traditional" medicine was really radical and short-sighted drug-filled treatment for back pain and sciatica. Shortly after I read his message that the condition really isn't very serious for most people, the pain went away. In fact, almost immediately. In the years since, I have occasionally been under lots of stress, and sometimes in those situations my back aches a little. But armed with the wisdom Dr. Sarno taught me, even during my worst episodes since then, I have only experienced very minor discomfort.

Now, at the age of 59, I ride a bicycle up and down 4000 foot mountains, sometimes ride 150 miles a week, I can do 14 pull-ups, I can run in road races, much more. Back pain no longer limits me.

A few people that this guy is a charlatan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind Over Back Pain
Mind over back Pain was given to me by the owner of the gym I go to. I was having back pain in the upper and lower back for months...living on creams, gels, advil, heating pads etc... I went to an orthopedist affiliated with a spine institute and after all pathology was ruled out I was told It was from to much exercise and I needed to go on a prescription anti inflammatory and stop all exercise and exertion until it is better. Rest-Rest Rest! I was upset because working out has been a big part of my life. I am a 52 year old woman who is 5'6'' and 119 pounds and in excellent condition. I have worked out since I was 16 years old. I slowed down a lot and was very cautious, although still worked out and then I was told about Dr. Sarno's book. I was VERY skeptical at first to say the least. I read the book, became a believer and got better fairly quickly (within 2 weeks. I amforever a believer in the mind-body connection and Dr. Sarno. I have coincidentally run into other people that have read the book, even someone who went to Dr. Sarno years ago, and it helped everyone. I would recommend this book to anyone with any kind of back pain 100%.

5-0 out of 5 stars God Bless Dr Sarno
Until I had read Dr Sarnos first book "Healing Back Pain" I had suffered chronic lower back pain for decades. I would miss work several time a year lying in bed in agony. I lived in fear that my back would go out at any moment. My physical activity was drastically curtailed.
After reading his first book by back pain melted away almost over night and I have been pain free for 12 years. I don't live in fear anymore about hurting my back, and am involved now in a number of sports including martial arts.If this book doesn't help you, you're only out the price of the book. If it helps you, this book will be worth it's weight in gold.
May God bless Dr Sarno.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thin
The book left a lot to be desired.Offered very little information on "how to".

5-0 out of 5 stars initially skeptical, but willing to consider...
i read this book in one afternoon. I have been suffering for lower back pain for 7 years. I had surgery for a ruptured disc at L5/S1, and MRIs showing that the L4/L5 is now bulging. Schmorl's nodules, spinal sthenosis, SI dysfunction. I had injections with cortisone in my SI. I am listing these things to show that my pain was 'real' and I was sure it was. I spent a lot of money on massage, exercise, and books. Carey method, Dorn method, Alexander method, MBT shoes... oh and lots of cyclobenzaprine. A friend suggested I read this book and mostly out of desperation I gave it a try. I could not pick up my daughter, could not do sports, and in order to put on my socks in the morning I had to lean back in bed so that my knees would come up and I could reach my feet. I am sure I forgot some of the treatments I tried through the years. I still have part of my right foot numb from the surgery, but the surgery helped for a while. Then it started hurting again. In any case, I read this book three weeks ago. I actually ordered three of his books and leafed through them at random. This book does not say your pain is in your head. It only says that your subconscious is so sneaky, that for a variety of reasons, which he goes onto explaining, is creating the physical conditions for your pain. I am very suspicious of Freud and make references to him mostly in jokes (freudian slip is when you say something and you mean your mother...). So I have absolutely no explanation for the fact that I started playing squash and running again. Every morning I get out of bed I have a moment of apprehension waiting for the pain, and then realize I have no pain. I do not know and I do not care if it is placebo, hypnosis, self-suggestion... whatever it is, I have no pain. I do feel some pangs ever now and then I remind myself dr. Sarno's principles, and the pain goes away. If you tried everything and you still hurt, why not give this a try? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthy pioneering effort in the literature of abuse heaing
I see a lot of the reviews for this book merely praise it but don't attempt to put any context around what is commendable in this book and areas where it falls short or there is room for further excellence beyond its scope. The thing that this book does so well is it brings a strong personal testimony to bear on a situation that all too many face alone: how do I heal from the abusive and sinful nature that I learned and assumed firsthand through personal childhood trauma? Dr. Hegstrom does a great job of describing in simple, plain and direct English the nature of how as the title implies, we have children who have their natural development and maturity cycle of life interrupted by abuse and trauma. This leaves them emotionally arrested and unable to grow the mature emotional and mental means to deal with life problems as their physical body matures and they enter adult life in terms of the scope of demands and responsibilities. He articulates this model with clarity and compassion and a good deal of "been there, done it" that is convincing because it is in its core essence, solid personally vetted spiritual and intellectual truth. That said, it is uncomfortable how science and technology paradigms and claims and faith-based positions are mixed somewhat liberally together, one attempting to fortify the other. For example, the idea that we have "software" that is divinely programmed is a marvelous idea or construct but its really one that is just that - a construct, a metaphor of convenience. It's not something that the Bible, let alone neuroscience has confirmed the exact details of. It's theory presented with gospel authority and that mix might cause problems where the wounded faithful accept pseudo-science or quasi-science blindly and without question. But as a book that makes a case for the wounded to have hope to "rewire" their brains if they are teachable, that part is not ever likely to be unseated. That's solid Biblically rooted mature understanding of growth in faith and virtue through repentance and atoning life choices. Good stuff but two very vastly different subjects and approaches to healing (healing through faith and scripture, healing through scientific remapping of the brain) are surveyed and at times combined and the text can not do both of them anything like full justice in the light, fast 152 pages this book provides. It is at its best really a manual for healing first and foremost that has utility for those who are open to a Biblically rooted faith-based approach. Much of what Dr. Hegstrom is voicing is open to further scientific study and refinement. He makes a lot of bold statements about brain chemistry without (as far as I can tell) backing those up with qualified studies. That doesn't mean he's wrong in his overall premise (in fact, I think he is more right than many who leave God out), but I do think with time some of his more emboldened claims and statements will be challenged and likely refined by more study in the area of brain chemistry among wounded/non-wounded subjects. I am a Christian and a rational intellectual who understands and has read widely in matters of both science and faith. I applaud his early efforts to expand this critical work around healing childhood trauma in the adult population and to bring the lost to the light and hope that is real and true. But some of the author's conclusion might reflect more the subjectivity of Hegstrom's admittedly extreme and anecdotal life experience. I saw where there is room for further study here and I just thought that ought to be noted as I didn't see that mitigating view in the other reviews posted here. I know it sounds like I am being more negative, but just guardedly positive is how I intend my words and critique here. I recommend the book with the mild reservations as stated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating must read for all diabetics!
This book was recommended to me by my podiatrist. He knows I'm a voracious reader and swore that I would enjoy this.I did! It's full of great history, medical discovery and some very valuable insight for anyone affected by diabetes ... personally or by a friend or loved one.The title is fully explained. The author's style is conversational and delightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars I bought 5 copies to share with others!
A very inspiring true story that helps one gain perspective on many things, not the least of which is pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Is Hard to Believe Pain is a Gift
Dr. Paul Brand was a remarkable man who contributed significantly to our understanding and treatment of neuropathic foot problems.Although he worked with lepers, the same problems affect our diabetic patients. His contributions to the management of these problems will not be forgotten. In addition to his medical expertise, his concern and treatment of individuals who were considered outcasts and beyond help are models we should all follow.Concern and care for others is what life should be about, and he exemplifies this attitude perfectly. His ability to improvise to help the people medically and socially was remarkable.Since the people needed special shoes, they just made them themselves. His work in India is still going forward. The story of this remarkable man is recommended to all.I have given each of my employees a copy of the book.I encourage them to use Dr. Brand's attitude toward people as their own as we deal with patients each day.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cerebral Analysis of Pain
I bought this book after reading Philip Yancy's book Soul Survivor.Dr. Philip Brand was a mentor described in one of the chapters. This book is a biographical account of Dr. Brand's life.It provides compelling insight into the physiology of pain and why it is indeed a gift we should be grateful for.It definitely changed my thinking.

Mr. Yancey and Dr. Brand are the authors.I expected more in the way of 'Christian' testimony, especially from Philip Yancey, to be stated throughout but I am not disappointed.Actions have always spoken much louder than words and Dr. Brand lived out beautiful grace. mercy and love throughout his career.

Anyone experiencing physiological or emotional pain would benefit from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the heartwarming story
This is the heartwarming story of Dr. Paul Brand, son of English missionaries who served in India as an expert in hand surgery (and, by frequent necessity, in general surgery) and in leprosy. Philip Yancey is editor-at-large for Christianity Today.

Brand is one of those rare, deeply compassionate surgeons who has a wonderful gift for observing the human condition and for developing ways to offer his presence as an essential part of his healing ministry. (See also the editorial of Martina Steiger, ThD on presence in this issue of IJHC.)

Brand trained during WWII in London, which served as a helpful preparation for his work in Velore, India - as in both situations doctors often had to do what was required in the situation for the immediate, urgent benefit of the injured and sick - frequently improvising due to limited human and material resources.

Brand was attracted to surgery not for the glory of surgical performances and achievements (although he certainly achieved both), but to improve the lives of the people he helped. He became fascinated with the fact that lepers had deterioration of their limbs to a great extent because of loss of pain sensations. This left them vulnerable to injuries and infections of which they were often totally unaware because they could not feel the warnings pain ordinarily provides - to be gentle and to seek medical or surgical care for the damaged tissues.

Brand developed innovative surgical procedures, but always had to give special attention to the unusual vulnerabilities of the lepers under his care. These required compassionate listening, along with awareness of the psychological and social needs of the lepers, which could easily undermine and counteract the best of surgical methods.

Starting with the awareness of how the lack of pain was a serious, sometimes even fatal liability to the lepers, Brand develops his thesis on how pain contributes to our lives in positive ways.

Here are but a few of the many golden nuggets of medical, surgical and human wisdom Brand shares:

Brand clearly clarifies mechanisms of pain perception that include the peripheral signal set up by nerve stimulations of the body; the nerve impulses that carry the messages; and the brain that interprets the meaning of the signals and messages.

I learned a fundamental distinction: a person who never feels pain is task-oriented, whereas a person who has an intact pain system is self-oriented. The painless person may know by a signal that a certain action is harmful, but if he really wants to, he does it anyway. The pain-sensitive person, no matter how much he wants to do something, will stop for pain, because deep in his psyche he knows that preserving his own self is more significant than anything he might want to do. (p. 195)

The implications of that observation are much more far-reaching than in just addressing the pains of people considering surgical interventions. The same processes apply with pressures on men in Western society to be reasonable, on top of masculine genetic preferences for left-brain, linear thinking and socially acquired preferences for disconnecting from their emotions. As men conform to encouragements to ignore and push through their pains, they are more likely to act in ways that can be harmful. People sensitive to pain are not only aware of preserving their own selves, they are also aware of the importance of preserving the integrity of others.

I have treated patients with acute arthritis who have the same degree of degeneration but respond in opposite ways to the pain it produces. One woman stays in bed all day, clutching the affected hand in genuine agony, and will not even attempt to pick up a pencil. The other says to me, "Yes, my hand hurts. But I'd go crazy just lying around. I've got to work as best I can. After a while, I forget about the pain." Behind these two responses lies a great difference in personality, belief system, confidence, and expectations about health. The "pain-prone" person sees herself as a victim, unfairly cursed. The disorder defines her identity. The second sees herself as a regular human being somewhat slowed down by pain. I have had some arthritis patients who strike me as genuinely heroic about pain. In the morning they slowly force their stiff hands open; it hurts, yes, but the fact that they feel in charge gives them a measure of control that keeps pain from dominating. (p. 280)

Dr. Hans Selye was the true pioneer in discovering the impact of emotions on health...

As Selye summarized his research toward the end of his life, he named vengeance and bitterness as the emotional responses most likely to produce high stress levels in human beings. Conversely, he concluded, gratitude is the single response most nourishing to health. I find myself agreeing with Selye, in part because a grateful appreciation for pain's many benefits has so transformed my own outlook.

Peopole who view pain as the enemy, I have noted, instinctively respond with vengeance or bitterness - Why me? I don't deserve this! It's not fair! - which has the vicious circle effect of making their pain even worse... (p. 222)

I also give Brand top marks for his wonderful ways of encouraging people to employ all of their capacities to bring about healing in their lives. These also include social supports - which are much more commonly present in India.

Where this book is a bit dated is in its stopping short of understanding that physical pain is often a message about the disharmonies in a person's life. When these pains are addressed, the physical pains often clear. (This is well illustrated in the article in this issue of IJHC by Patsy Anthony-Green on clearing the pain of severe cartilage degeneration in her knee by using Emotional Freedom Techniques; and also illustrated in WHEE: Whole Health - Easily and Effectively, [...].) An index would also have been helpful.

The above criticisms are minor, however, relative to the wonderful, heart-felt sharings about Paul Brand's work.

Product Description
For the 70 percent of couples who have been affected by extramarital affairs, this is the only book to offer proven strategies for surviving the crisis and rebuilding the relationship -- written by a nationally known therapist considered an expert on infidelity.

When I was 15, I was raped. That was nothing compared to your affair. The rapist was a stranger; you, I thought, were my best friend.

There is nothing quite like the pain and shock caused when a partner has been unfaithful. The hurt partner often experiences a profound loss of self-respect and falls into a depression that can last for years. For the relationship, infidelity is often a death blow.

After the Affair  is the first book to help readers survive this crisis. Written by a clinical psychologist who has been treating distressed couples for 22 years, it guides both hurt and unfaithful partners through the three stages of healing: Normalizing feelings, deciding whether to recommit and revitalizing the relationship. It provides proven, practical advice to help the couple change their behavior toward each other, cultivate trust and forgiveness and build a healthier, more conscious intimate partnership. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Some good points, worth reading.
Worth reading if you are trying to learn how to let go of those build up emotions after discovering of your partner's infidelity. A book your partner should also read if he/she wants to understand what YOU went through after discovering the same.

The only thing that I absolutely did not like about this book is how the authors made the hurt ones seem somewhat pathetic.By pathetic, I mean that every single one of them seem desperate to want the cheater back no matter what he/she did.

BTW,I only read this book after my husband and I had been to about 8 counseling sessions and the MFT suggested that I read this. We are still in counseling as books can't solve our problems. He did not physically cheat on me, he emotionally cheated on me with women he met in chat rooms which led to cell phone calls over a period of one year. We have been married for 24 years and it just might be over real soon. We have a 9 year old daughter.

4-0 out of 5 stars An eye opener
This book was a great help for me during this time in my life. Recommended by my counselor and used in some of my sessions. A great resource to go back and reflect when needed.

4-0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource dealing with infidelity
This is a good resource for both the betrayed and unfaithful partners to gain a deeper understanding of why and how affairs occur; then it provides a specific course of actions for couples who want to restore trust, intimacy and hope after infidelity. The author describes how our different personalities and backgrounds can profoundly affect our abilities to cope with the conflicts and ups and downs in marriages. And the hurt spouses can appreciate the clear descriptions of the psychological trauma they face after disclosure and the ambivalence which their unfaithful spouses also battle with. She also distinguishes some differences in attitudes and needs between men and woman while they are in the affairs.

However, I can see how Dr. Springs' neutral approach combined with her practical and matter-of-fact writing style about infidelity can anger some readers especially who have been betrayed and deceived like no tomorrow, and I was one of them. The clinical perspectives could be perceived as her sheer lack of compassion for the betrayed spouses, though she acknowledges their pain and suffering by calling them "the hurt partners."This explains the 4 star rating, not 5.Having said that, it is a self-help book; if you are looking for the author's invitations to endless venting sessions or pity parties, this book is not for you.

However, from my personal ordeal, I urge that if you are the betrayed spouse that you strive to put your pain, bitterness and rage aside and keep an open mind to read the entire book then evaluate your options and your relationship. When she says you are responsible about what happens in and to your marriage, instead of playing the victim card, you can take her message as you have the power to turn scars into stars in your own lives. We all have the choices to live our lives with dignity and honor no matter what happens to us.

I'd recommend the book if your marriage for the most part is good - prior to the affair that is, and both of partners are willing to work very hard to do the right things to heal, or even you are not sure whether not you want to stay or get out of your situation. Staying married or getting a divorce, either way, you will be aware of your emotions, choices and what would be required during the healing process.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding
I am a psychotherapist, and have worked with many couples whose relationships have been threatened by the crisis of infidelity.Janis Spring has written an incredibly wise guide for couples who would like to heal the pain caused by unfaithfulness, rebuild trust, and move forward together.

This book provides concrete and practical guidance about steps that must be taken, as well as very deep insights about the impact of unfaithfulness upon both partners.

This is the one book I recommend over and over again for couples who hope to save a damaged marriage.Outstanding, insightful, wise, and true.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for couples dealing with infidelity!
This book was instrumental in getting us past my husband's infidelity. We bought two copies and each read it, writing notes in the margin. Then we would plan "date nights" to talk about what we had read and discuss the many valuable insights and questions it triggered.Fantastic! ... Read more

Product Description
Here's an innovative and practical approach to eliminating chronic muscle pain, written by a popular occupational therapist with thirty years of experience freeing people from the discomfort of tendonitis, lower back pain, and neck and shoulder tension. These types of chronic pain can be caused by a number of factors, including old injuries, habitual movement patterns, problems with body alignment, psychological causes, and inability to sense your own body movements accurately. Muscular Retraining for Pain-Free Living clearly and concisely explains the causes of persistent muscle pain and offers a therapeutic exercise program to address these problems and end pain.

This book explains the basic principles behind Williamson Muscular Retraining, a pain-relief discipline, in a way that is practical and easy to understand. The problems of poor posture, muscle tension, and stress-caused pain are corrected by seeing them through the lens of kinesthetic awareness. Normal kinesthetic awareness is lacking in much of the population and typically overlooked by health care practitioners. Muscular Retraining for Pain-Free Living presents case examples of how people have used kinesthetic awareness and exercises to change how they think of their bodies and to end pain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book!
This is one of the best books I have ever read on helping yourself to know why you hurt and what to do to help yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immediate Results
This is an extraordinary book that contains a thorough discussion of kinesthetic awareness, along with simple exercises to help you increase flexibility and reduce pain.

I was amazed how quickly these exercises helped me.For instance, in one exercise, the objective was to isolate and rotate the oblique abdominal muscles. At first, I couldn't even feel how to rotate the right oblique. Then, I became aware of it, rotated it as suggested and experienced a significant opening. My breathing was fuller, and my posture improved. My neck felt better.

For the last few months, I have been doing about 20 minutes of these exercises every day -- with wonderful results. In some areas of the body it takes time to get results -- with other parts, you may get some relief right away.Be patient.

It has been my experience that most doctors, yoga teachers and massage therapists are unaware of somatics and exercises related to kinesthetic awareness.Yet these kinds of exercises are precisely what many people need -- especially those who have tried traditional stretching and yoga with little results.

I am grateful to Craig Williamson for sharing his expertise in this book and I give this book my HIGHEST recommendation.

By the way, like some other reviewers, I have tried Hannah somatics and Egoscue.Hannah somatics provided me with benefits, but Craig's exercises have helped me even more.I agree that Egoscue can offer some benefits but it takes a huge time commitment and I have found that Craig's exercises are more effective and don't require a huge commitment of time.I enjoy doing these exercises.

2-0 out of 5 stars No New Information
Save yourself money and do not buy this book.Stretch, do yoga, meditate and relax in a nutshell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compatible with Hanna Somatics
I found this book to be a fantastic addition to Thomas Hanna's Somatics but not a substitute.I highly recommend both books.I have done the Egoscue method.Egoscue has great information about how the body is suppose to be aligned but their stretching and passive exercises take a lot of time. I got faster results and the mind/body connection with the active exercises of Somatics.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC! 60% increase in my running time in just 2 weeks!!
I've read hundreds of books relating to physical pain and therapy.
Some costing substantially more than this little gem. This is an easy to understand
and more importantly very easy to implement and feel results almost immediately. This book is similar to Pete Egoscue's books. However, as good as the alignment exercises are in the Egoscue books they are designed to take an hour or two a day! This book does the same job in a couple of minutes. The exercises really work, infact I increased by treadmill running by 60% after a couple of weeks because my knees are now tracking properly over my feet. Worth its weight in gold!

5-0 out of 5 stars At last, some relief!!!!
I wish I had found this book a few years ago before my surgery. I love the seperate sections on each part of the body. It makes total sense and it has lessened my pain considerably. I have 3 herniated discs in my neck and have suffered bad neck and back pain for 5 years. I had to give up work 2 years ago. Now, after 1 month of Dr Bookspans exercises, my neck, shoulder and back are so much stronger, I now can see that I may possibly return to work in 3 months. Thank you so much. I only wish that her methods were practiced in Australia by many practitioners, because I have not been able to find one yet, and would like to work one on one with someone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to learn about postural habits that contribute to structural pain
I bought this book about a year ago because I have had so much neck, upper back, and hip pain for quite a long time.Chiropractic visits and regular massage help but never seemed to 'hold'.I had to take charge somehow. The purchase of this bookgot me on the road to paying much greater attention to my own habits of posture and movement.

The author speaks in clear, lay language making it easy to understand and implement her suggestions.Lots of drawings accompany each section to further explain what concept she is trying to convey. The basic premise of the book is really the beginnings of what every good physical therapist promotes:improved posture and postural habits. That may sound easy but it's not so easy when you get right down to it.Most of us who try to correct our posture do so on a "now and then" basis and are unable to maintain the practice. It's not just about 'standing up straight' because there are lots of bad habits each of have to break.

The book is divided up into chapters based on body area (neck, hip, knees, etc.). Each topic is covered based on the type of postural problems/habits that can plague that area.Simple but effective changes are what she advocates. She doesn't make it rocket science because we wouldn't be able to understand how to do what she suggests. It's just clear, straight-forward information on the ways we hold our body that can create pain, and how, once we have pain, we continue to compromise the way we hold our body thus creating other problems. Her advice is clear and easy. She offers different stretches and how to evaluate if you need a particular stretch.

You can't read this book without coming away forever changed in your awareness about your posture. The worst part is....you start noticing everybody ELSE's posture!(But that REALLY makes it sink in.)If you have had pain somewhere for either a short time or a long time, regardless of how many doctors you have been to about it, you owe it to yourself to at least check out this book. It's worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fixed my chronic back pain
Chapter 1- No More Neck and Upper Back Pain - The second page of the book had me pegged as "forward head" and 15 minutes later I knew how to correct my posture, how to exercise better and wFix Your Own Pain Without Drugs or Surgeryhat was causing my back pain. After years of muscular neck problems, and trying all kinds of therapies and drugs, this book helped me put the past behind me.For the first day with my posture, my whole body felt tense and out of place. The second day, less so and by the 3rd day, I felt normal again. It's been over a month, one in which I sat more hours in front of my computer due to increased writing assignments and to my great surprise and relief I made it through the month painfree and drugfree.Thank you Jolie Bookspan for teaching me how to identify and address the cause of my upper back and neck pain.THere are eleven other chapters (lower back pain, wrist pain, knee pain, shoulder, hip and ankle, achilles, foot and leg, hamstring and multiple pain) but really I only read the first chapter.:-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fix Your Own Pain
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is suffering with long term aches and pain.It is well written.Easy to understand.Gives a good education about how your body works and why you are in pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars first advice I've had that works
A couple of weeks before I found Jolie Brookspan online and ordered this book, I was telling a friend about my decade-long neck and back pain and how I was even starting to have hip pain and walk with a limp sometimes, and she observed that many older people "look like they've been punched in the stomach."I started to see that sucker-punched posture everywhere:chin forward, butt out, a slightly crouching walk. But I'm 50 and fit and have been told for a decade that my problems are caused by an overly-straight spine, so I sympathized with those grandmas, but that wasn't ME.Then I found Brookspan's webpage, and I bought the book, and I looked in the mirror. And holy cow, me with the dancer's posture and the good abs, I was standing butt out, a slight crease at the top of my thighs, an exagerrated lumbar curve, and my head forward. In twenty years, I was going to be one of those grandmas.

My advice is, if you're not the type to accept responsibility for your own pain, if you don't question the physiatrist who wants to put you on painkillers for life, if you want to believe that the answer is another ergonomic accessory or a supplement, then this book isn't for you.But if you're ready to take a hard look in the mirror and change the way you sit, stand and move for the rest of your life, then this is your ticket.

My pain improved before I'd gotten through the first chapter.Maybe someone told me long ago that keeping my chin slightly tucked while I sat to read the newspaper would prevent stiffness, pain and headaches, but if so, I didn't hear.My new awareness of head positioning has been life-changing.And that was just one small change; my hips are getting better too.

The line drawings are cheerfully rudimentary but convey all the necessary information. There are kind of a lot of typos, but the medical information and instructions are absolutely clear. And the book is repetitive but thatworks for me because the rather homely, commensensical instructions so thoroughly contradict what I've been told for years that I need to hear everything more than once.I love the photos of ordinary people, young and old, fat and fit.

This book could be a major contribution to healthcare reform. It has already saved my insurer the cost of an MRI ordered by a doctor who thinks my hip problems could be caused by some very rare wasting disorder.I never scheduled that MRI because I knew I didn't need it,but thanks to Brookspan, I can now say why.Heck, I can demonstrate why.But since Brookspan's approach is low-tech, do-it-yourself, contradicts the establishment message that disc degeneration is inevitable and permanent, and doesn't involve buying or consuming anything, there's not much chance her book will get the attention it deserves. ... Product Description

Everyday activities such as using the computer, driving, or even curling up with a good book can create tension in the neck and shoulders. It's no wonder that so many of us have persistent discomfort and pain in these areas. Healing Yoga for Neck and Shoulder Pain presents simple, yoga-based practices that you can do at work and at home to release muscle tension for immediate relief.

After suffering from chronic neck pain for years, author and yoga therapist Carol Krucoff developed the unique self-care program found in this book. Now you, too, can free yourself from neck pain by practicing simple yoga exercises to stretch tight muscles and strengthen weak ones and by learning to properly align your body when performing everyday activities that may be contributing to your pain. "In this wonderful, easy-to-read-and-use book, Carol Krucoff has gracefully and intelligently integrated several important healing traditions in order to bring relief to those suffering from neck and shoulder pain and the pain of stress. I recommend it enthusiastically as a friendly vehicle anyone can use to explore and experience the amazing power and healing potential of these human bodies."
--Jeffrey Brantley, MD, director of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program at Duke Integrative Medicine, and coauthor of Five Good Minutes® in Your Body

"Unlike modern medicine, which often does little more than suppress the symptoms of neck problems with painkillers, yoga can get at the root causes of pain. In this wonderful book, Krucoff demonstrates safe, gentle, and effective strategies to lessen neck and shoulder discomfort. Be careful, though--yoga's side effects include peace of mind, improved mood, and better sleep. You could get hooked!"

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good self-help book for neck and shoulder issues
I have chronic tightness in my upper back, neck, and shoulders.I am well aware that yoga can be a helpful form of self-care, and in fact I practice yoga at home regularly several times a week. However, I thought that this book might provide me with some new information.

Author Carol Krucoff, a yoga therapist, asserts that yoga can help address pain on several levels:physical, psychological, and energetic. She acknowledges that neck pain is common, but rather than view neck pain as a disease, she suggests that is a phenomenon which can be controlled.Krucoff maintains that yoga offers healing through the practice of postures, breathing exercises, mindfulness, and meditation. Before getting into the actual yogic practices, Krucoff provides some basic anatomical information. She includes several different types of postural self-tests, from checking to make sure you aren't holding your head too far forward to performing a body scan awareness exercise to reviewing standing alignment.

The information on the actual practice of yoga begins about halfway through the book.Krucoff presents simple, basic postures, starting with breath awareness, body scan, and deep abdominal breathing. From there she introduces easy neck release and neck stretch poses, gradually moving the stretches into the upper back/shoulders as well as the lower back. She incorporates some postures focused on strength and balance, such as tree pose, and others designed more to stretch and strengthen (these fall under two categories:those for the neck and shoulders, which are performed seated in a chair, and those to target the back, which are performed lying face down).Modifications are offered for many of the poses, all of which are illustrated with straightforward line drawings.Krucoff concludes with some tips on keeping the neck healthy both on and off the mat.

Overall, this book provides some very good information for the self-management of neck and shoulder problems. The only reason that I rated it 4 rather than 5 stars is because it didn't provide me with any new information. As mentioned above, I am already using yoga to address my own chronic upper back, neck, and shoulder tightness.I have found several yoga DVDs to be particularly helpful:Yoga in the Garden of Serenity (the Neck & Shoulders chapter), Yoga: Relief from Neck and Shoulder Pain, Viniyoga Therapy for the Upper Back, Neck & Shoulders with Gary Kraftsow, and Yoga to the Rescue for Neck & Shoulders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Health and general collections where yoga and workplace health are of interest will relish this title
Healing Yoga for Neck & Shoulder Pain: Easy, Effective Practices for Releasing Tension & Relieving Pain provides readers with simple, yoga-based practices that can be done at home and work to relieve muscle tension. It's a unique self-care program developed by the author herself, so is not to be found in competing collections. Health and general collections where yoga and workplace health are of interest will relish this title.

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I was very disappointed with this book.
I was hoping for some specific exercises for neck
and shoulder problems. Instead its just a basic routine,
do them all but if something hurts dont do it.
Thats not what I bought the book for.
It gives lip service to the anatomy of the shoulder.
The little it says seems pasted in from some
other source and its never referred to at all.
No interest is shown in the clavicles (collar bones) and very little
mention even given to the scapulae (shoulder blades).
Way too much time is spent on relaxation, breathing,
and meditation.
Any old yoga book that you have lying around will
do as well or better than this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Your neck and shoulders will thank you
Ms. Krucoff truely knows her anatomy.
This book is easy to follow and understand.
The format is well laid out and makes it understandable for all levels of anatomy knowledge.
If you suffer from neck and shoulder pain or are a yoga teacher I recommend you buy this.
It is also not to wordy with many visuals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relief!
Krucoff's clear, easy-to-follow instructions taught me to release the tension and mitigate the pain that often result from a long automobile commute to a job where I sit at a desk and work at a computer most of the day. Thank you! ... Read more

Don't be fooled by the cover or plot summary. The main character sounds interesting and might be in another book, but in this one the writing is choppy and the character development zero-dimensional.I suspect that in the trend to make 10 or 15 books in a series, this heroine and setting have suffered greatly. But profit is king, not the reader experience.I know it's hard to find good books nowadays, but keep looking. This is not worth your time. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Working closely with trigger point pioneers Janet Travell and David Simons, Sharon Sauer developed a range of trigger point therapy treatment protocols for many areas of the body. Trigger Point Therapy for Low Back Pain presents her protocols for lumbar, buttock, and ilio-sacral pain. These gentle techniques are easy to learn and administer at home. They include compression, stretching, and range of motion exercises for the muscles that refer pain to the lower back and hip areas.

The book includes an overview of myofascial trigger point therapy, describing the basic process of treatment. It also includes an index of all pain and dysfunction symptoms pertaining to the hip and lower back, including pain, numbness, weakness, or restricted range of motion in specific areas, which will enable readers to find the muscles most likely to be the cause of the specific symptoms presented. Although the book is geared toward readers wishing to use the techniques for self-care, one chapter details how health care professionals can add these techniques to their practices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough a "Must Own"
I have purchased quite a few books on trigger points as I have suffered with shoulder and upper back pain for many years.I went to the so called experts in my city, some even had a roster of clients that included pro athletes. Please don't be fooled, they knew little about what they did.I eventually stumbled across Davies book and was quite impressed with the reviews it got.So I started my in depth education of trigger points.

TP Therapy for Low Back Pain is incredibly thorough. It gives you tests to see for yourself where your issues may be. It is an absolute gem.I was so impressed that I took a flight to Chicago to get treated by Sharon and her staff. What a refreshing change. They were highly knowledgeable and really cared about their work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book from excellent therapists
As a former client, I am so excited to finally be able to take Mary's and Sharon's knowledge with me wherever I go. Trigger Point Therapy works, and there's no one that I know of that are more knowledgable on the subject than Mary and Sharon. Buy this book. You won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must if you are into bodywork
This is one of most recent books about trigger points and trigger point therapy and it's totally worth it. Based on the famous books of Dr Jane Travell and Dr David Simons, this book try to go a step further at the same time of being more easy to understand. Comprehensive and easy to read, this book it's a must if you suffer from back pain or if you are a bodyworker and want to know more about back pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject I have read
This is the best book Ive read on the subject of trigger points for low back pain. Furthermore, the book is well written and clear. If you happen to be a bodyworker, you are not likely to find a better book on the subject. The only downside to the book is it uses drawings instead of actual photos. Nevertheless, this is no reason not to buy the book. If the book ever goes into further editions, I would highly recommend the authors consider updating future editions with actual photographs which would enhance the entire book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book from Master Teachers of Trigger Point Therapy
Had I not been a patient of Sharon Sauer several years ago, I might have overlooked this wonderful book.As a massage therapist, I have not only experienced (and survived) myofascial pain, but have worked to eliminate it in thousands of patients and clients. My practice has been deeply enriched and empowered by what I learned from Sharon Sauer.

However, this book opens up new horizons both for the public and for bodywork practitioners."Trigger Point Therapy for Low Back Pain" clearly demonstrates Sharon's mastery in this complex healing art and in the art of teaching it.It sets forth the trigger point protocols in such a clear fashion that I have been inspired to renew and deepen my studies in this field.

Thanks, Sharon and Mary for giving us the gift of your amazing work.Myofascial trigger point therapy brings us holistic awareness and powerful tools to take care of our amazingly complex and resilient bodies. In an age when medicine is all but dehumanized (and touch-free), physical therapy is often routinized and restricted to defined muscle groups and consumers prefer symptomatic treatment with pills rather than addressing our real health and wellness issues, this book brings continuity and hope that the breakthroughs of Travell and Simons will not be lost on our high-tech, low-touch and short-sighted culture.
