Product Description
A clinical reference manual for the evaluation and treatment of muscle pain

• Contains detailed illustrations of pain patterns and trigger-point locations

• 15,000 copies sold in first hardcover edition

Myofascial pain syndromes are among the fastest growing problems that physicians, osteopaths, acupuncturists, and physical, occupational, and massage therapists encounter in their patients. In Trigger Point Therapy for Myofascial Pain Donna and Steven Finando have organized vast amounts of information on treating myofascial pain into an accessible "user's manual" for healthcare practitioners. They examine a wide range of pain patterns and present evaluation and palpation techniques for reducing trigger points--and thereby alleviating pain--in the most clinically significant musculature of the body.

This comprehensive yet easy-to-use reference guide to treatment of muscle pain begins with chapters on the concept of Qi and its relationship to myology, specific trigger point location and activation, and palpatory skill-building techniques. Subsequent sections provide detailed information on each muscle to teach clinicians to locate quickly and accurately individual points of pain and compensation. A visual index allows easy identification of the muscles that may be involved. Trigger Point Therapy for Myofascial Pain provides necessary and invaluable information for sufferers and any professional involved with myofascial disorders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource for body practitioners
Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (09/10)

This is one of the most concise, user-friendly books on trigger point work I have seen. Each modality has an image of the body part with trigger points indicated, as well as proximal attachment, distal attachment, action, and palpation. In some cases the authors add pain pattern, causative or perpetuating factors, and stretching and strengthening exercises.

As a former trigger point practitioner I can attest that this book addresses areas of myofascial pain in a very effective manner and I wish I would have had it for quick reference when needed. It is designed for body practitioners that use trigger point therapy on its own or as an added modality to their practice.

"Trigger Point Therapy for Myofascial Pain" by the Finando's is recommended for any practitioner's library, and certainly as a resource.Lay people may find the concept interesting or want more knowledge as to what their practitioner is doing. They would find it easy to understand and may find the exercises of value. This is a classic that will be around for a long time - the myofascial structure will never change nor will the trigger points.

So I work in the bath and beauty field and often find myself the victim of very specific, highly targeted back pains. Ugh! That all changed when I discovered Trigger Point Therapy. Turns out, the muscle wasn't as hidden as me and my original therapist thought! With the help of this very inclusive manual I was able to get almost instant gratification. And with a little practice and some strengthening I no longer have the pain.

A pure bred God send to any medicinal practitioner (and consumers too)! I purchased "The Magic Touch: How to make $100,000 per year as a massage Therapist" (a superbly inclusive list of PROVEN methods to profit from your skill), in the same day and am SOOOOO grateful that I did. Talk about a mind opener. I read chapter 3 regarding the "misconceptions of Deep Tissue Therapy" and fell in love. Meagan really explains how you don't have to endure pain for a therapist to get to the deep tissue it seriously revolutionized the way I receive massages! These two publications can make any healthcare professional a money making machine!

3-0 out of 5 stars Rating depends on reader and use: 2 to 5 stars
To provide context for my review, I am a behavioral medicine physician, who specializes in hypnotherapy for pain management and have developed and teach a 200+ hour medical and pain management hypnotherapy certification course.Hypnotize Yourself Out of Pain has some great material. There are a lot of methods presented, so there are many potential approaches and practices that can be developed from what Eimer presents.

I have found the book to be more appropriate for a mind-body pain management practitioner than for a patient. That said, I have used it as a sort of workbook where I translated the concepts and helped patients develop exercises that were realistic for them to do on their own.I believe it takes a motivated patient to stick with the book without becoming overwhelmed.I would recommend it in the way I use it, as a source for co-developing material patients can explore to find methods of pain relief that work well for them.

While I received some great ideas to use with my patients. However, none of my patients patients got very far into the book because they said it was too complicated and difficult to follow.Given my particular personality, if I was a patient suffering from chronic pain, I would last about 15 minutes with the book.People who are more patient would last longer. Some people have the special character required to take the book and run with it by adapting the approaches and methods to their own needs.I have found these kinds of people generally benefit tremendously from just about anything they read that has useful information because they bulldog their way through it.So, I recommend the book highly for some uses and some people and less highly for others.A coworker of mine borrowed the book, but could not get past chapter 2 for the same reason several of my patients could not read it - too complicated and too much information packed in too tightly. On the other hand, a patient of mine got a copy and probably cut the number of sessions we spent in half because she was very diligent in using the methods inside.I trust that most people know enough about themselves to know how useful this kind of book might be for them.So choose wisely.

While I would be cautious about recommending the book for patients before getting to know them, I would not hesitate to recommend it to professionals who practice hypnosis for pain management. So, for most lay readers, it gets 2 stars, for lay readers with more fortitude, I give 3 to 4 stars and for extremely highly motivated lay readers, I give 5 stars. For most professional readers, it gets 4 stars if it is utilized as a way of developing exercises to use with patients for both in office sessions and for co-developing home self management exercises. For professionals who are already practicing hypnosis and do not want any support developing self management exercises with and for patients, I would give the book 3 stars. It is probably notable that I have been using the book with patients for six years, so I found it a worthwhile investment.

Because I have found that most lay people find the book hard to use, I decided that there should be a book that was more user friendly for patients. So I began writing my own.I found it is a lot easier to criticize someone else's book before writing my own. After getting 270ish pages into writing, I have a great deal more respect for anyone who writes a book aimed toward a lay audience - even at my stage of writing I have lost track of how many all-nighters I have done (not pleasant even in residency, and brutal in one's 40s).So I can only imagine what it has taken Eimer to write a book geared to lay readers. My hat goes off to him.I mention the difficulty of writing to a lay audience because it is very different than writing to a professional audience, and much more challenging. For example, I am also writing a text for professionals and it is infinitely easier because I can fall back on jargon and a more academic style (perhaps lazy, but true).By the way, this is not a plug (since I am not telling you the titles or anything about them), I am merely mentioning it to emphasize my respect for the author's efforts.

Good luck on your choice for a book that fits your needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are determined to manage you pain, this is the book!
I have chronic pain and I treat people who have chronic pain. This is not only an excellent book on using self-hypnosis to reduce chronic pain and suffering (The author is no fly-by-night.He is a highly respected expert on hypnosis), it is one of the best chronic pain self-management books.Although there are other good books available on chronic pain (see my other reviews), if I could only recommend one, for the committed, I think it would probably be this one. If you are ready to learn how to greatly reduce suffering from chronic pain, I strongly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The mind is what tells one that the body is in pain; but one can tell the mind what to do
The mind is what tells one that the body is in pain; but one can tell the mind what to do at the same time. "Hypnotize Yourself Out of Pain Now! A Powerful, User-Friendly Program for Anyone Searching for Immediate Pain Relief" is a guide to using the skill of self-hypnosis to make one's mind ignore the pain of the body, so that one can get on with life. Claiming to be tried, tested, and proven by medical professionals, "Hypnotize Yourself Out of Pain Now! A Powerful, User-Friendly Program for Anyone Searching for Immediate Pain Relief" is highly recommended to anyone willing to attempt a new approach to their chronic pain management, and for community library self-help collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent self-hypnosis for pain management
The Weight, Hypnotherapy And You, Weight Reduction Program: An NLP And Hypnotherapy Practitioner Manual

Sometimes, I read a book on hypnosis that is to eloquent, so well-organized, so understandable, and written with such clarity and sensitivity that I wish I'd written it myself. That's how I felt about reading Hypnotize Yourself Out of Pain Now (Second Edition). This is the quintessential book on self-hypnosis for pain management.

Eimer first covers topics such as types of pain, the physiology of pain, pain and neurology, and the pain gate control theory, explaining how hypnosis can reduce chronic pain by closing off the neurological transmission of sensation to the brain from the site of previous injuries. He also discusses how to evaluate pain and how to evaluate one's coping strategies. The book then moves into the topics of hypnosis and self-hypnosis.Eimer acquaints the reader with basic information about hypnosis and then teaches eight methods of inducing self-hypnosis.

Next, the author provides a primer on pain management, covering the "six D's" of pain management: Deep Relaxation, Decatastrophizing, Direction, Distraction, Distortion, and Dissociation. He tells the reader how to match the pain management method to the type of pain, and gives self-hypnosis processes and self-suggestions in each "D" category. The pain management skills in this book include behavioral coping strategies, cognitive interventions, and relaxation methods.

This book also covers advanced self-hypnosis processes such as instant relaxation, a self-healing ritual, mindfulness meditation, ideo-motor signaling, and ego state therapy. I counted over 50 exercises for pain management in this book, so there is surely at least one that will help any reader who is willing to invest the time to learn and practice self-hypnosis. The book comes with a companion CD covers what hypnosis is, pain perception and hypnosis, relaxation with hypnosis, rating and lowering discomfort, pain relief and imagery, healing imagery, therapeutic touch and energy healing, comfort transfer, and stress control. While this book is written for anyone with chronic pain, it is also an excellent reference for hypnotherapists who work with pain reduction. As a chronic pain survivor myself, I believe this book holds great promise for improving the lives of many.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most helpful book I've read about chronic pain.
Three years ago I purchased this book to help with challenges from living withscoliosis and related leg pain. I half-heartedly read book.Of course, 3 years later my challenges increased so that the old maxim "When the student is ready, the teacher appears" became self evident. I revisited the book and have benefitted tremendously from the clear, concise, steps, that one can take to break down the cycle of pain.I also like the fact that there are a myriad of choices of relaxing or meditative exercises for you to chose from. This lets you pick and chose what works best for you.I only wish that there were a CD available as an accompaniment to the book.I am grateful to the author and hope to read more from him in the future ... Product Description

Twice as many women as men will experience depression sometime in their lifetime, and episodes for women are likely to start at earlier ages, last longer, and recur more frequently, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians (www.aafp.org). Many women are given medication to treat the disease, but medication alone does not always address the underlying emotions which trouble the mind and spirit. Counselor Elyse Fitzpatrick and Dr. Laura Hendrickson provide biblical guidance on how to balance medical intervention with biblical encouragement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help with emotions
This is a life changer! I do not suffer from depression, nor anxiety but my emotions seem to be ruling my life. I didn't think I could really change my thinking, thus thoughts were driving me crazy. I thought many were from the devil "accusing the brethren" as it says in Scripture. Maybe some were, but many were not and I am feeling much freedom from black moods that were starting my days.
This would be such a great asset for those who think they cannot help get rid of their depression and/or anxiety without drugs.
It's a tremendous source of common sense.

3-0 out of 5 stars Go ahead, read!
This book was very insightful, and I'm glad I read it. Sure, it opened my eyes to several important issues. The authors propose a new idea of thinking how the soul connects to the mind, and it's certainly the most accurate, without a doubt. It's written by a few well-meaning people who very much care about their readers' health. I found the diagrams and charts peppered throughout to be extremely helpful.
But the authors clearly aren't experienced at writing, and this shows. Essentially, the book is based around one principal, and they try to get this across - which they do. But they don't do it in a way that couldn't have been done in one chapter. I remember thinking, "Goodness, do they think we're that slow?" as they go on repeating their idea, just in different ways.

I would recommend this book, but maybe once you've got their message down, don't read past the first few chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Work Yet on Counseling and Medication for Emotional Pain
Reviewer's Grade: 9 out of 10 (only the Bible gets a 10)

Level of Difficulty: 2.5 out of 5
The book is ultimately meant for everyone.Clean, lucid prose.Carefully constructed outline.Informative appendices. And those insightful, makes- things-click-in-your-brain diagrams that biblical counselors are so good at!

Target Audience: Women, specifically women on medication for emotional pain, thinking about getting on medication, or counseling women who are in either of the above situations

"God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world."
(C.S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain)

The premise of this book is that God and His Word are sufficient for enduring with true peace through any emotional pain.Simple enough.Granted this would cover most biblical counseling books out there. However, when a book written by NANC counselors specifically on the subject of suffering and psychiatric medications comes out, it's well worth a read.Thankfully, the book delivers a powerful dose of biblical argumentation, a theological superstructure that holds everything together, a keen personal awareness of pain in all its forms, and penetrating yet warm applications that stir the heart toward faith and obedience in Christ.

Co-written by a medical doctor, this book offers solid basic insight into how theology and medicine are related. It takes us into the physiology of fear and depression (cf. "neuroplasticity" on p. 125), but always rooted in the presupposition that what goes on in the heart effects the outer man.The authors land squarely on the side that habitual training of the mind in the Word will lead to right thoughts, feelings, and choices, which in turn lead to changes in physiology (36-37).This is not to say that meditating on Scripture will heal organic diseases. But when dealing with painful emotions that become full-blown panic, depression, and the like, the authors are dead-on target when they write, "if we do not see ourselves as being able to solve our problems through the grace and power of God, we have missed one of the mainthemes in the Bible: God enables His people to live victoriously even under very difficult circumstances (36)."

The same truth just stated holds true for those suffering emotional pain stemming from physical illness or some other physical debility.Painful feelings are "God's gift to us to tell us that something is wrong, that something needs fixing" (101).This was, on a personal note, the most exciting insight gained from the book. The book reminds us emphatically that God will withhold earthly delights in order to draw our hearts to the one True delight: Jesus Christ.Such a focus on our Lord and on the gospel permeates the book and shows us the practical significance of the gospel for every sphere of human life.

Although the book was written specifically for women (includes feminine topics in Chapter 7--nothing risque), the theological principles and applications will equip every believer to fight the good fight of faith in the midst of emotional pain. This book will practically guide you to fight feelings with faith, to trust in the sovereign goodness of God in every circumstance, to believe on the promises of Scripture regarding our temptations, to take up the process of change by Scripture-intake and focusing on the needs of others, and lastly, to treasure His kingdom and His righteousness knowing that every need of yours has already been accounted for by the Father.I am especially appreciative of the fact that this book doesn't sugar-coat pain.It just puts it into gospel perspective. Here is a helpful and hope-filled quote that exemplifies this focus:

"At the time when we start to do better and suddenly encounter trouble, we wonder, What did I do wrong? Please don't fall into this trap!...the process of learning, growing, changing, failing, and then learning again is the very plan He's designed for us" (197).

I was personally taken by the perceptive biblical arguments and principles of this book. Each step of the way, the authors drive into my mind the absolute necessity of the cross, the sovereignty and love of God, the centrality of the word, and the folly of this world's philosophies that have now basically eliminated the inner-man from the consciousness of people. It's a work that boldly and graciously urges Scripture-saturated, humble trust in God for overcoming emotional pain.I'm hoping that a future work (by these women or other authors) will focus more on the church's role in this increasingly prevalent counseling issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genuine, Biblical, Practical Help
I opened this book with the wild hope that is could actually help me out of the black hole that fear had trapped me in.What I found was exactly what I needed.I found my life accurately yet sensitively described in the pages of the chapter on anxiety. The authors make clear the relationship between the mind and the body and how they affect each other, clarifying for me why I suffered mentally and physically the way I did. They go on to show the reader how they can finally be free of such agony. The authors are careful to exhort biblically, using God's word to confront, correct, and heal.

I found the earlier chapters most helpful for my own struggles. The later chapters will be helpful if I ever find myself in any of the physical conditions which they address, or if I am in a position to counsel someone else in such a condition.

It's no easy thing to battle depression, anxiety, or other such emotions, and the authors never present it that way. They clearly understand the pain and the struggle, and they are loving and gentle in their approach.I highly recommend this book to both women and men who struggle this way.I have purchased several copies already and am giving them out to people as I have opportunity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical!Profound! Timely!
This easy to read book is a practical guide to a godly way of looking at pain, meds, and our hearts. It's pages are filled with hope and grace for those who suffer from troubling emotions.Full of diagrams, testimonies, and thought provoking questions; this book is a must read for understanding what the Bible says about your pain and the pain of those you love ... Product Description
With the advent of mind-body medicine, it is now possible to combine the healing principles of both the medical and spiritual fields. To this end, Dr. Phil Shapiro has developed a ten-step, self-help model that he uses himself and teaches to his students and patients. After you have received your medication, surgery, or natural remedy and you are still in pain, there are a variety of psychosocial and spiritual methods that can help you manage that pain skillfully. The ten-step model described in this book is a composite of healing principles and methods extracted from the great wisdom traditions and organized into cognitive-behavioral practices. These techniques are designed to help the reader accomplish three goals: 1. Expand healing power: for body, mind, and soul 2. Become more skillful pain managers: for any pain, problem, disease, or disability 3. Evolve spiritually: feel better, become a better person, and experience higher states of consciousness To take advantage of the healing principles embedded in the religions, we need to solve the problem of toxic language and traumatic religious history. There is a way to do this. We can design healing models that serve people of all persuasions: Baptists, Sufis, ethical humanists, scientific atheists, true believers, true non-believers-all of us have the same magnificent healing power in every cell of our bodies, and we know how to make it grow. The ten steps do not declare answers to life's big questions, such as why we are born, why there is so much suffering and evil, whether there is a God, and where we go after death. However, we can apply the wealth of healing wisdom in the great faith traditions to help us manage our pain and heal. This book is written for atheists, agnostics, religious or spiritual persons. Anyone can play in the expanded field of healing power. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm Cheering-Up Medicine for Those with Routine Illnesses
Most of us make lousy patients. I'm told that physicians are the worst. We think the worst. We miss what we can't do. We take it out on everyone around us. In short, we need to lighten up.

Maeve Binchy and Wendy Shaw ended up having hip replacement surgery around the same time, and compared notes. They realized the patients needed something to cheer them up. This little, light-hearted, warm book is just the ticket! I think it is the best book gift I have seen for those going through normal illnesses.

I wouldn't recommend it for people with serious, life-threatening situations. An inspiring book about miracle recoveries would work better there. Lance Armstrong's new book, It's Not About the Bike, fits the bill for many cancer patients, for example.

Here's what's in this book. It begins with an explanation about Ms. Binchy's hip replacement that includes having to face up to the need to lose weight, stop smoking, and cut way back on the alcohol. In a witty fashion, she makes great good fun out of her own fears and foibles. You can't help but like her for it, and begin to laugh at yourself a little in your own past experiences with doctors, nurses and hospitals.

From there, she goes on to provide witty lists that would cheer anyone up. One of my favorites was full of put-downs (that everyone has thought, but never said) to one's roommate in the hospital. No, you won't say these either, but you'll probably break up laughing as you think about this list every time you look at the other patient.

There are lists for what gifts to ask for, things to do when you get home, what tasks to give visitors, and every other imaginable circumstance.

The book is enjoyable both for its humor, and its good humor -- showing you how to look on the bright side. One of my favorite sections was the story about the woman who thought she was having a heart attack, and ended up getting a lecture from a third year medical student (serving as a waitress) about all of the other things it could be that are not so serious.

Smile! You'll feel better when you do!

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing
At their best, Maeve's books contain wonderful warmth and humour. This one, sadly, falls far short of that promise.

For example, various sections (such as the one on how uncomfortabless with being undressed means self-obsession), rather than being witty or understanding of a patient's pain and fear, seem instructions on how to be a "good patient," to cause doctors or nurses maximum convenience. Many of those who are ill have found that doctors are not the nicest of people with whom to deal, and there is nothing to make a patient feel comfort or empathy in this book. The little "poem" about telling about eating, smoking, and drinking is far from funny.

I would not dream of giving this to anyone who was ill. The copy I'd intended to present ended up in my recycling bin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laughter is still indeed the best medicine!
Having had hip replacement surgery myself recently, this book was sent to me by a friend, both of us familiar with Maeve Binchy's books.I can't begin to tell you how each page brought tears to my eyes from laughter as I related to her stories of elastic stockings, "invalid" gadgets from walkers to commodes, the unfailing compassion of overworked nurses, and the embarassment of those wonderful hospital gowns!Wendy Shea's illustrations were hysterical reminders of hospitals and then the long awaited recovery period. You both deserve 10 Stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Does laughter cause aches and pains?
Many years ago, the writer Norman Cousins, wrote a now classic book aboutthe part laughter and humor played in his recovery from a life threateningillness. And today, its as if Maeve Binchy continued this premise when shewrote her newest book, Aches and Pains.

Maeve Binchy is primarily knownas the best selling Irish author who writes wonderful tales filled withmemorable characters. Some also know her from her meaningful columns whichappear in the Irish Times. But now readers everywhere will be introducedto a very different Maeve Binchy as learn about Binchy as a patient whenshe first had surgery to replace her hip and then during her recuperation. And readers will have an extra bonus from the illustrations done by WendyShaw who had the same operation as Ms. Binchy. The book is really funny, filled with all sorts of advice on how to survive a stay in any hospitaland some anecdotal dopctor and nurse stories. And strange as it may seem,Binchy and Shaw make it a pleasure to read about theirconfinements.

Consider reading this book to see how it is possible tomake light of your aches and pains or think about giving this as a gift tosomebody who is also recuperating.

And an extra benefit is that all ofthe proceeds from the sale of this book will be contributed to theArthritis Foundation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to give to someone who's ailing
An easy to read, entertaining, compilation of short vignettes and advice from one of my favorite writers. Some of the chapters originally appeared in Maeve's column in the Irish Times, which she used to chronicle her recent hip replacement. It is filled with humorous and matter of fact ways to deal with illness head on. Product Description
The perfect chapter book!

The Pain and the Great One hardly agree on anything. But deep down, they know they can count on each other, especially at school, where it often takes two to figure things out. Like when that first baby tooth falls out on the school bus. Or when an unwanted visitor on Bring Your Pet to School Day needs to be caught. Or worst of all, when a scary bully says you’re burnt toast. On days like these it can feel good not to go it alone. (And don’t forget Fluzzy the cat, who knows a thing or two himself.)

Cool Zone with the Pain and the Great One is by far the best book that I have ever read. I really think that you should read it. And if you do, I hope that feel the same way I do about this wonderful, wonderful book.

Jake, also known as The Pain to his big sister, has plenty to deal with at school. From the bully who steals his magnifying glass to the disastrous Bring Your Pet to School Day, navigating the first grade is no simple matter. Luckily his big sister, Abigail The Great One, has been through it all before. When she's not too busy being great, she lends a helping hand, and in the process, she finds that even third graders need a little help now and then.

Judy Blume has the absolute greatest knack for illustrating real problems kids face every day -- the ones most adults blow off or overlook. Blume dissects and magnifies kid issues, bringing to light exactly why The Great One wants to change her name and why The Pain is so distraught about the loss of his toy elephant. No problem is too small to be important to the main characters.

Take real kid voices and real kid problems, add in Blume's classic humor and anecdotes, and you have a formula for success. What a fun companion to SOUPY SATURDAYS WITH THE PAIN & THE GREAT ONE.

With seven brand-new stories, this book has excellent read aloud or read alone appeal!

5-0 out of 5 stars good book for fellows
good book for fellows, details about most procedures, nice diagrams and pictures. I recommend it for all fellows in pain meds.

2-0 out of 5 stars False Advertising
This review pertains to the 2nd edition 2008 release of this title.

Per the back cover of the book:
"See exactly how to proceed via a DVD of video clips, demonstrating proper patient positioning and difficult procedures..."

This is one of the major reasons I purchased this book, and likely one of the major reasons other people are considering this book.

However, the DVD only covers THREE different procedures! They are:
1. Hypogastric Plexus Block
2. Lumbar sympathetic block
3. Splanchnic nerve block

This is all that is on the DVD!!! Out of the dozens if not hundreds of procedures in this textbook, why only videos of these three? They are by no means the most difficult pain procedures to master, nor are they very commonly employed in *most* pain practices, with the exception of the lumbar sympathetic block for CRPS/RSD.

Furthermore, these video clips were not made for this book, they are recycled videos from the University of Texas Pain Department that were filmed long ago, and sold under by the World Institute of Pain on its website on a DVD called "Instructional DVD Video #1 for interventional pain treatment techniques." So, I already had the exact same videos which I had purchased from the WIP previously! What a disappointment!

Secondly, these videos have a commercial agenda in employing only the Epimed curved blunt tip needles, which are an invention of Dr. Racz and manufactured by Epimed, whose President is Dr. Racz' son!

Other than
1. Only three techniques covered
2. Commercial bias

I think the video is quite good. But one would think there should be dozens of techniques on this DVD not just three!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book!
Good Book!

This is no doubt the most comprehensvie interventional pain management book that has been published so far. The value of having it on your bookshelf for quick reference during practice and for continued self improvement as an interventionist is of great significance. However, it is far from perfection.

Part I, "Anantomy and Physiology of Pain: Clinical Correlates" serves as the basic review of Anantomy and Pharmacology of pain processing system. The best chapter in this part is the "Functional Anatomy of the Spine" which contains detailed description and illustration of spine innervation from Atlantooccipital joint to lumbosacral facet, intervetebral discs, spinal nerves, etc. A concise review on techniques on performing selective diagnostic injections of the spinal axis at the end of this chapter including discography, nerve root sleeve approach and facet joint makes this chapter much more clinically relavant.

Part III, "Neural Blockade and Neurolytic Blocks", describes and demonstrates A to Z interventional techniques for blocking both neuroaxial and peripheral nerves. The chapters on radiofrequency techniques are very well written, thorough and easy to follow. However, it would be much better if authors included procedure codes for such procedrues as Rhizotomy of SI joint, RF lesioning of ramus communicans nerve, Ganglionotomy of cervical, thoracic and lumbar levels,RF lesioning of lumbar disc of which the procedural codes are no where to be found. I personally have been struggling to find such codes for the above techniques in my practice. The chapters on performing sympathetic block at various levels are also clearly illustrated and easy to follow, which serve well as the guide for performing these blocks in comparion to other interventional books which lack such content. Nervertheless, Part III also has many weaknesses. In fact, some of the techniques introdueced are rather old and obsolete especially when judging from the progress achievedin interventional pain management by 2001, but unfortunately without being incorporated into this section. E.g, most well trained interventional pain specialists will agree that fluoroscopy serves as "eyes" for the intervetionist, however, some of the chapters discussing neuroaxial intervential techniques do not even have any fluoroscopic image, such as the chapter on lumbar epidural block as well as the one on Sacroiliac joint injection. The worst chapter of all is the "Sacroiliac Joint Injection and Low Back Pain". First of all as mentioned above, it does not have any fluroscopic picture.Secondly, the patient was placed "supine position" instead of prone, yet, the "PSIS" was identified? How can someone identify PSIS from front? Let's just assume this is a "typo" error. Even so,no matter how many times I read through the procedural description, I still could not figure out how this was done. For someone like me, who is Board Certified in American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Board of Pain Medicine, an interventional pain management fellowship trained spine interventionist, who simply could not make sense of such a simple procedre from its description. I wonder whether the author who wrote this chapter really knew how to performSI joint injection.Maybe it means that this portion should be re-written. This is actually the main reason that I give this book 4 stars rating despite there are many other chapters that are very well written and useful for interventional pain practice. Another shortcoming is that some of the commonly performed procedures such selective nerve root block or transforaminal epidural were nerver even mentioned in Part III, but I think, should have been done so, although in the Chapeter of "Functional Anatomy of the Spine" of part I, selective nerve root sleeve appraoch was briefly introduced, it should also be here in Part III as this is the neural blockade section. Lastly, many of the interventionists consider "Selective Nerve Root Block"(SNRB) and/or Transforaminal Epidural Injection (TFEI) "bread and butter" of spine intervention, yet, this "most comprehensive interventional pain bible" with close to 800 pages does not even have them in its word index, which undoubtedly impacts negatively on its authority.

Part IV & Part V, "Neuroaugmentation" & "Spinal Administration of Opioids & Other Analgesic Compounds" are the best work of this book. They are the best resoures available for spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal drug delivery pump. The authors did outstanding work in writing up these chpaters and introducing to readers step by step the mechanisms, patient selection, implantation techniques and complications. The chapters on intrathecal drug delivery pump has helped my practice tremendously. However, the only shortingcoming is that it does not have chapter addressing Intrathecal Baclofen pump for Spasticity and Spasticity related pain syndromes. There are quite a number of patients with spasticity disorders due to brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, etc, requiring implanted intrathecal baclofen pump. However, there is severe lack of resources in guiding the long term management of such patients, ie,maximal drug concentration, maximal daily drug dosage, drug holidays, etc.

The purpose of this review is also to give the editors some of the feedback from interventional pain physicians like me so as to extract more "nutrients" from its contributors in the future and to make the Third Edition a greater success, in addition to share my experience from learning this book and utilizing what I have learned in the practice of interventional pain managent.

The information contained was good and easy to understand in simple format easy accessable for the lay person or those with pain, but and its is perhaps a BIG BUT it is 10plus years old and changes have occured in the treatment of pain and advances made in the understanding of courses.

4-0 out of 5 stars War on Pain
I read this book because I had a consult by Dr. Fishman for my chronic myofascial pain syndrome, fibromyalgia and migraines and came away worse for even having had the consult. This doctor may know how to write about pain and how to treat it, but did not practice what he preaches. His insinuation was that it was "all in my head and a good meditation program would probably cure everything" I have. I came away with more psychological suffering that added insult to injury.
6 months later I had shoulder surgery for bone spurs (very real pain) and I'm sure that would not have responded to meditation. I had to read the book to try to understand why he would treat me this way and to validate my own pain experience. It was a good book to read, but I'm still frustrated with my experiences with physicians.

4-0 out of 5 stars there is hope
Many times people are injured only to find that nobody cares. As people get passed from doctor to doctor information is lost. Soon the cure becomes another disease...until you find the one doctor who cares enough to listen.

The body has amazing powers to heal itself. When you restore hope, then you have started the healing process.

Inside there are tons of great amazing medical nugets which I found fascinating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Yet Readable
Any sufferer of chronic pain knows the frustration of trying to communicate to others how pain seeps into every aspect of your daily life.Too many doctors ignore the patient's pain because long term suffering may be incurable, but that does not mean it is not treatable. This doctor understands that acknowledgement can bring relief and is an advocate of having the patient take an active role in seeking relief with everything from brand new drugs and technologies to alternative medicine. This book will educate you so you can better seek relief with your doctor.A lot has changed in the last decade and now almost everyone with chronic paid can get considerable relief as I found out when I thought I had run out of options. I read this book from the library, then bought the book so I could have my family read it. This is a very valuable book.

This book will help patients and family members be able to better advocate for services and treatments.Pain clinic doctors, primary care physicians, and medical students should read itto help them avoid providing the the same menu of treatment for any patient who walks in their door.Thank You Dr. Fishman for a informative and hopeful book! ... Product Description
Clinical Hypnosis for Pain Control is a compelling argument for the use of hypnotic analgesia as a viable alternative to psychopharmacological interventions for controlling acute, chronic, and perioperative pain, as well as pain from nonsurgical procedures. Yet clinical hypnosis is not an alternative medicine, the author argues; rather, it is an innovative way of using a patient s subconscious resources to distract, dislocate, or reduce pain in a variety of clinical settings from the ER to the hospital s rehabilitation wing. As the staff psychologist at the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center s burn center, Dr. Patterson draws on his experiences and many hypnotic inductions in helping patients deal with the kind of severe pain involved in treating burn wounds and in other types of acute and chronic pain, such as headaches, fibromyalgia, cancer, and neuropathy. Written for a general clinical audience but particularly for pain specialists Clinical Hypnosis for Pain Control also provides a masterful survey of the different types of pain, as well as a variety of easy-to-follow induction examples (and instructive commentary throughout) for the major types of pain syndromes. The book is also an excellent resource for students and researchers who want to explore hypnotic analgesia s scientific basis and its growing acceptance as an evidence-based practice, the latter exemplified by the work of psychologist Milton Erickson. In the book s penultimate chapter, Dr. Patterson outlines a groundbreaking approach of combining brief counseling techniques and Ericksonian hypnosis for long-term pain management. ... Read more

Product Description
Fixing You: Neck Pain & Headaches highlights an unlikely culprit in neck pain--the shoulder. When the shoulder blades do not rest or move correctly, muscles attaching from the shoulder blade directly to the cervical spine and base of the skull cause neck pain and headaches.

If you've never had your shoulders assessed in relation to your neck pain then this book is for you. It will teach you exactly why you have constant nagging neck pain and headaches and how to fix them.

The author, Rick Olderman MSPT, has been a sports and orthopedic physical therapist for over ten years focusing on chronic pain conditions. He presents technical information in an easy-to-read format using insightful medical illustrations as well as pictures and stories of real patients to highlight key concepts in his book. An added benefit to readers is that video clips of all exercises found in this book can be viewed for free on the Fixing You website. This ensures proper form and faster results.A premise of this book is that diagnoses such as bulging disks, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and thoracic outlet syndrome do not identify the actual source of pain. Instead these diagnoses are symptoms of poorly functioning shoulders affecting the neck. If you've tried a myriad of treatments for your pain to no avail, then this book will have the answers you've been seeking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for headache relief
Thank you Rick!
great book, gives you the facts in a straightforward manner, to figure out what is going on --with your neck/shoulders. Just the right amount of medical background to answer the why, and then great suggestions for answering the how!
I have enjoyed the well written steps to alleviate the pain, has just enough graphics to help and well the videos on-line is the icing on the cake to make sure I can follow the exercises to the tee. The book was very well written, to the point, and I found myself jumping in trying the exercises! I' m hooked, cannot wait to continue on in the series

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is worth its weight in gold!
I read half the book and even though Rick advises to read the whole thing before doing the exercises, well, I couldn't help myself...I jumped right in. I did most of the exercises for the first time yesterday. Today I looked at a few of his on-line videos and did all of the exercises in the book. I can't believe how good my neck feels! It hasn't felt this loose and pain-free in many, many years...as far back as I can remember, practically. The concept of my shoulders being responsible for neck pain simply never occurred to me and was never mentioned as a possibility when I tried to get help through chiropractors, massage therapists, orthobionomy practitioners and acupuncturists. I really like the idea of helping myself too...going to all these health care practitioners can get really expensive and very frustrating when they don't "fix" you. I'm not a couch potato and I do stretching every day when I get up, but what with a couple of minor car accidents long ago, and falling down on our rocky terrain while hiking more than a few times, plus some bad posture habits, my whole body has gradually gotten so out of whack I didn't know where to start. Lately I've been constantly gulping down ibuprofen due to almost constant headaches. My neck was at the very least chronically tense, but also usually quite stiff and sore. I'm looking forward to Rick's books that focus on hip problems and shoulder problems because I need both of those too! I've had an extremely painful shoulder for the past month or so due to too much time at the computer, I think. But the exercises in the Neck Pain book have helped this as well.

This book is extremely easy to read and understand. You're given a batch of exercises as well as helpful tips to follow during your daily routine. The videos Rick presents on his website are very clear and well-executed.

Do yourself a favor: get this book and do the exercises. You won't believe the difference it makes. I'm going to recommend it to everyone I know with any problems along this line. In fact, I've already recommended it to three people!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly helpful and easy to understand
This book allows us "real People" who don't have a medical degree to affect real change in our bodies - the author gives us information we can use - and also gives us the "whys" behind it - but only if we want to know - I've already placed orders for the Back Pain book in this series - great gifts for friends and family-

5-0 out of 5 stars A Neat Book About Fixing Most Common Aches
Reviewed by Andrey Bilko for RebeccasReads (11/09)

Most people experience neck pains and headaches either occasionally or on the regular basis. In today's world, where so many people have to stare at a computer screen for a good part of a day, it is hard to escape them and to not experience some kind of neck pain, which may lead to headaches. I, myself, fall victim to occasional neck pains and migraines, and was always interested in learning about other ways of dealing with them besides taking pills. And this book has shed some light towards understanding the possible ways of dealing with such pains.

The book is succinct and straight to the point. It starts out by the telling the reader about the "mindful healing", which consists of mental steps that have to be taken before taking the active steps towards physically treating the pain. The author does a great job of making the reader understand what the problem is and how important it is that the mind has control over it. Then, the author, a successful physical therapist, gives a quick, easy-to-understand anatomy lesson, in order to explain how headaches can be caused by improper neck and/or shoulder positioning. The anatomy is presented along with very helpful pictures, making it really easy to comprehend even for someone, who had never touched a biology book before.

The last section of the book is its most vital part, containing the main message. It describes the corrective exercises, which are supposed to help in correcting the posture and strengthening of neck and shoulder muscles. These nine exercises are shown in great detail with nice illustrations. And to make things even easier, there are videos that can be accessed online, which show all of the exercises in action, with the author showing the right techniques.

Overall, this is a very neat book, which gives the reader a better understanding of the causes for neck pains and headaches, in addition to giving a solid advice on fixing such pains and aches, without any serious intervention. I am glad that author's years of practice as a physical therapist have inspired him to share his insight with us.

how does one rate a book about pain?

it was painful to read! it's even painful to write this review.. i've been putting it off for weeks. pain can be fluid and contagious like this

the book is very thorough, and covers pain from a large variety of viewpoints: historical, medical, biological, literary, social, sexual, aesthetic, etc

i found it fascinating - full of interesting information, stories and cultural references. the connection between humor and pain was especially interesting (and enlightening), and i will not forget the description of pre-anesthetic surgery as long as i live

it is heavy on literary references. david morris is clearly excited by literature, but some are extraneous or repetitive. it's a minor criticism

having spelunked into the abyss and back - it was a powerful reading experience, but not one i'm in a hurry to repeat

i would bet the author experienced sheer agony researching and writing this book :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A splendidly rich set of reflections on living with pai
This is an extraordinary book, serious and varied and passionate; I recommend it to anyone who has encountered pain, and would be happy if all doctors had to read it in medical school. It argues that modern society no longer has any effective ways of coping with suffering - especially chronic pain -, of finding meaning in it, and explores some of the ways people in the past learned to live with - and learn from - pain, pain understood not as an enemy attack on human lives which ought to be pain-free, but as a part of life which must be lived with and which can be meaningful in itself, not just a deprivation of meaning. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, Insightful book on Chronic Pain and its Management
Dr. Schneider has written a highly readable, in-depth study of chronic pain in which she dispels myths and stigma associated with the appropriate, effective treatment of chronic pain. She helps patients understand that taking opioids (synthetic opiates, such as Vicodin, oxycodone)is often the best way to alleviate and/or mitigate moderate to severe chronic pain (and indeed all pain, whatever its label--e.g., acute pain).

Her book is crucial in these confusing times with respect to using effective pain medication ("p.M.") that often involves the administering of opioids.Scare tactics by the government, the media, academia, and physicians poison any reasonable discussion of using opioids necessary to treat pain that doesn't respond to other treatment. often doctors try everthing under the sun, no matter how non-medical to avoid treating pain effectively.

The emotionally-charged ordinary people who see oxycontin et al as Satanic--both in terms of physicians who prescribe these drugs that put a person in the manacles of the devil and people who take such hellish pain meds.Dr. Schneider, like so many people doctors or otherwise, came to her recognition of the need and gross underuse of pain meds because of her own and her children's severe pain. Unfortunately, it takes personal experience of the life-diminishing (often life destroying) effects of pain, who benefit from opioids.

The AMA and the California Board of Medicine (not just Pain Association, who should be listened to, but often are seen paradoxically a biased) stress the undertreatment of pain and emphasize the fact that opioids are "the cornerstone" of pain treatment (See Preamble/Guidelines by Calif. med board for the use of "cornerstone."Here in California, there is statutorily enacted legislation that includes a patient bill of right for pain, that states that pain must be treated and an afflicted person should not have to suffer because doctors don't "feel comfortable" prescribing pain meds. Also, in 2000, the entity that governs hospital care, added pain as the "fifth vital" to be always assessed in patients. along with pulse, blood pressure, temperature, and respiratory rate.

Still, doctors ignore laws and guidelines on pain treatment and feel that they can simply not treat pain with impunity. This book explains how pain works physically, involving spine and brain etc. Dr. Schneider recommends many treatments for pain, but is careful to stress that most chronic pain requires strong, aggressive treatment with medicine that works. In this book, she educates the reader as to why opioids often need to be taken and should be prescribed from competent, non-negligent doctors. Also, no doubt pain meds can be abused, but that should never be the reason not to treat patients who need Percocet or Vicodin from getting the medication they need. It is 2010 and far too many in the medical profession remain perfectly happy to see people suffer from chronic pain without getting the medication they need.

Drs. who refuse to use opioids are not just indifferent or insensitive but actually cruel and to be blatantly honest these doctors seem to approach patients sadistically when it comes to pain.

This book is essential reading, if for no other reason than to provide a little balance to the debate over treatment of pain in dozens of books that recommend treatments which are premised on not ever using opiods. See for example the popular Understanding Chronic Pain by Robert T. Cochran, m.d., who excessively and juvenilely uses a helter-skelter laundry basket of anecdotes as a substitute for reasoned, persuasive arguments for the non-use of effective and safe opioids.

Book after book listed in Amazon suggest anything for pain instead of what actually is the best pain med, meaning opioids, because they turn ordinary people into obsessive drug seekers, trapped in the prison of addiciton or using drugs to get high. The previous is facetious: which needs to be said because this is how the majority of Americans view the use of using pain med's that work.
People's lives are ruined because their pain keeps them from enjoying life; people are often depressed and overly anxious because they are in pain that remains untreated. Suicide often floods the minds of people in constant pain.

It is time for people to get educated about pain and how it should be treated. This marvelous book should be read by people suffering from pain, their loved ones, doctors and everyone who is interested in charitably help people live, at a minimum, functional and meaningful life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most informative, educated work on dealing with pain...!!!
I saw the original advertisement about this book in a national pain publication. For any patient who is desperate, at wits end, and trying to educate themselves about this very real, debilitating diagnosis...this book is the answer.I am not a doctor, but this book is written for the common patient and is choked full of very useful information.Chronic pain can last for years and people need amunition to learn how to cope and deal with it.This is a Godsend of a book!!!!Very highly recommended and worth every penney. Will educate you so you can speak to and question your doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chronic Pain Must
Dr. Schneider's book is an absolute must have for anyone living with Chronic Pain or for family or friends who want to understand chronic pain and the myriad of treatment options and obstacles that many patients face. She is a pioneer in her field and her book deconstructs the archaic ideas surrounding the treatment of chronic pain and in particular the fear of opiates that has caused many people to suffer needlessly. The writing style is lay person friendly and she breaks down a lot of difficult concepts without compromising the level of information she is able to convey.

The book starts with what chronic pain is, the obstacles to receiving treatment and how to overcome them, how to find a Doctor that is best for you, complimentary and alternative treatment modalities such as Biofeedback, and how your personality effects your overall treatment plan. She also discusses medications commonly used for treating chronic pain and the benefits and side effects of the different types of medication. In addition, she dispels the myth surrounding the use of opioids in the treatment of chronic pain by discussing the difference between addiction and dependence and how the brain works with these medications as well as other medication.

The first and second edition are very similar. The first edition has 304 actual written pages and the second edition has 345. I was disappointed that some of the older studies (there are some new studies in the book) from the first book weren't replaced with more current information. Perhaps it was a choice or the studies simply did not exist. The second edition contains a little more of an explanation on some issues such as the use and dangers of acetaminophen, more information on certain conditions, and the addition of more Chronic Pain Conditions.

I wish that all Doctors would be required to read this book or attend one of Dr. Schneider's lectures. Hopefully, it would help to dispel myths and would stop the too common downhill slide that happens before (if one is lucky) they find a compassionate and informed Doctor. Unfortunately, chronic pain is still very misunderstood and under-treated which can be a dehumanizing and sometimes fatal problem. As a chronic pain patient, I have given this book to friends and family who have been able to gain invaluable insight which is priceless to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars very light weight - nothing new
Other than a few anecdotal patient cases, the book has no new information. It also does not serve as a self-help book that one can use to "stop pain" in spite of the title. At times the book comes as an advertisement for the author's practice. I am sure the author, Dr. Vad is a great doctor for stopping pain when you visit him in person. But the book is really a waste of time. Don't buy it.

2-0 out of 5 stars This BOOK stops nothing
Very little information regarding safe natural ways of diminishing pain. This book is mostly fluff with a very appealing title...Dont bother with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars No more pain when I sit at work!!!
This book really educated me about how to prevent back pain while sitting. I had been wrong on several counts. Wrong posture, wrong type of chair, wrong placement in relation to my computer. It's amazing what a differance these changes make for someone like myself who must sit 6-8 hrs per day in front of a computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
The book offered exactly what I needed for medical reference! Great information at a great price!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money...
This book (and another) were recommended to me by a doctor in a pain clinic. The only way that this book would ever be helpful is if someone is new to chronic pain. Being that I'd been dealing with my chronic, intractable pain for 6 years prior to reading the book, most of the information contained in the book were dealing with issues I've long come to terms with. It also very much implies that taking narcotics in any way for a long term is not the solution for chronic pain, when that couldn't be further from the truth for very many people. I was offended by the overall tone in the book that seemed to come off that all persons taking narcotics for pain were addicts, in many instances.
This book was not helpful to me. It may be helpful to you if you don't yet know how to cope with life-long severe pain. However, if I were you, I'd first research intractable pain - there are much better resources out there than this book, and most of them are free on the web.

Here's to a managable day!
Sincerely,
Chandra Welter

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book was reccomended by my Dr and it has been a great help in dealing with my pain..

4-0 out of 5 stars I am living with chronic pain
One review titled "I am recovering from chronic pain" may not have read the book or its' cover. You don't recover from "chronic" pain, you manage and learn to cope.

That is what this book is about, not the most current drugs or treatments. It is a collection of practical tools for understanding your chronic pain, coping with and managing chronic pain in your daily life so you can more enjoy life and living. This book was the most read and used by others in a chronic pain group I went to, where I first heard of it.

If one tool doesn't work, there are many other tools and approaches for managing and learning to live life more fully with chronic pain in this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I wasn't nearly as thrilled with this book as some of the folks whose reviews influenced me to buy it.If you know anything about the functional anatomy of sensation/pain and/or psychology of pain, it's not for you; you won't get anything new.If you're newly diagnosed with a chronic pain syndrome, and don't have a background in any of the above, yes, it might be helpful. ... Product Description
A rich and rewarding life is possible for those of us who live with chronic pain. Based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), one of the most promising and fastest growing psychotherapies being practiced today, this book breaks with conventional notions of pain management. These "feel good" approaches—including the use of pain-killing medication—all work to prevent painful sensations. The ACT approach, however, begins with the assumption that pain is a normal part of living that teaches us a lot about the state of our bodies and minds. Attempts to avoid it often cause more harm than good. By accepting and learning to live with pain, you limit the control it exerts over you. Mindfulness exercises, in particular, help you transform pain from a life-defining preoccupation to a simple experience. From this strong position, you can make choices that will lead to the life you’ve always wanted. Committed action is the way to make it happen. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pracitioners perspective
This book was given to me by a patient, her brother a professor of psychology had sent it to her as a way of managing her pain. My patient suffered chronic pain and had become anxious & depressed. This book offers a wonderful insight on the nature of pain in the western world & our cultural binds towards it. The program is hard work and needs to be worked on in conjunction with a professional, in my opinion. It is possible to use it well in group work it will take 8 weeks or more to complete.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, inspiring workbook
This book is easy to understand, and provides wonderful exercises to help people deal with the things that get in the way of living a full and vital life with chronic pain; uncomfortable feelings, negative thoughts, and unhelpful rules about what is possible because of pain. Many of the exercises in the book are powerful -- they really get you thinking about what you want your life to stand for -- and then the authors help you create a path to living that life in simple steps that can be put into practice immediately.

I highly recommend this book both for people with chronic pain and as a tool for therapists who treat people with chronic pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars "This book is blowing my mind"
Yes, that's what I told a few people by the time I got to chapter two. I don't even like using that slang expression!

Yet, I did, and I can't think of another way to express how I felt while reading this book. If you've been in chronic pain for a long time, have tried everything, are still in pain, and are at your wit's end (like me), I implore you to get this book.

What it isn't: an end to pain. What it is: an opportunity to explore the idea that it's your suffering that is the largest problem; not the pain itself, but your thinking and feeling about the pain.

If you've ever noticed that on some days you can "handle" your pain and others you can't, if you've ever wondered why you have good days and bad days, and that no matter what you do to control things, you're still suffering, if you've willing to try something totally new, you owe it to yourself to take a long look at the concepts in this book.

A few caveats: I almost gave the book four stars, because I think that as a self-directed workbook, it falls short. There is a lot of "homework" in this book, and it is good. However, I am not entirely sure of the usefulness of this book without a therapist or other helping professional. I am also not entirely sure if the explanations in this book of some of its concepts are in-depth enough for those not already exposed to some of its ideas. I have not read Dahl's more scholarly work on this subject, but I intend to, for I would like to explore what I've read here more deeply.

However, It is deeply satisfying to read ideas that provoke such "aha!" moments, that give voice and conceptualize fully things I've only had a sense of. That is what is "mind blowing" about the ACT approach to pain. I read the book all the way through before I started to engage in any of the worksheets and assignments it contains. I wanted to know everything - in the simple act of reading, I felt the glimmering of possibility, of liberation from the suffering my pain causes me (or I cause myself). This alone is worth the price of admission! And, the straightforward tone of this book is a breath of fresh air - no new-agey nonsense, no airy-fairy feel-good promises here.

The ideas contained within these pages are both simple and hard to do. Some may be familiar, such as keeping a pain diary. Others may not be, such as the difference between "clean" and "dirty" pain (a concept that really opened my eyes). All of it flies in the face of most accepted ideas about coping with/managing/controlling pain. This book is a challenge. It poses many different questions, including difficult existential questions. It asks of those in pain, "Are you ready to live your life with your pain?" It demands action, attention, and above all, mindfulness.

In spite of some reservations, I give it five stars, for I think it's imperative reading for any of us who live with chronic pain and ever feel hopeless or helpless. It doesn't offer easy solutions, but the solutions and challenges it presents are priceless.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book and I bought the product and it really works.
I could tell a difference in only a day. My RA seems to be leaving. I can do more things with my hands and wrist than I could before starting the MSM. This seems to be the magic bullet I have been looking for since I found out I had RA. The book said there are not bad side effects and so far that is correct. I plan to continue to taking MSM. It is wonderful to have so much less pain!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book provides some suggested doses for the conditions it covers. That is exactly what I was looking for! It has helped me with my monthly cramps and my energy. Great, easy read book

5-0 out of 5 stars Good source to start.
This book is a great source to learn about the usage, source and history of this much needed product. I Needed this product for a bit of arthritis associated with a condition called plantar fasciitis. Never heard of it until It happened to me. Painful as H**l, but the MSM cut the pain to the point where I could walk, run and excercise again. Doctor could only suggest pain meds and cortisone shots. I aint going down that road so I looked for a natural pain killer and found this stuff. It also does a lot more than kill pain too, so If your in pain, get the product but you will still need this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good prices on books and shipping is extraordinarily fast.
I have been buying books from Amazon and it's other participants for years...I consider it my best resource...service is great.

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful, informative book on a valuable product
This useful book informs the reader of all the various ailments and diseases for which the natural (sulphur-containing) product MSM can provide relief. Among the many afflictions and complaints addressed by MSM are arthritis, fibromyalgia, allergies and back pain.

It may be noted that MSM does not "cure" these disorders, in that the product needs to be consumed on a permanent basis, but what it does, first and foremost, is to relieve chronic pain with no side-effects - it is not a drug.

I personally had no real previous knowledge of this important product until reading the book, so it provided me with valuable information, and had me running to the health store to obtain a supply.

The book consists of 5 chapters explaining the nature of MSM and how it relieves pain and inflammation. Each of the remaining 15 chapters is devoted to a specific health problem including case histories of previous chronic sufferers whose lives have been transformed for the better through use of MSM, sometimes dramatically so.

Everyone suffering from chronic pain or allergies not already acquainted with this marvellous product should immediately check out this book.

Product Description
Social pain is the experience of pain as a result of interpersonal rejection or loss, such as rejection from a social group, bullying, or the loss of a loved one. Research now shows that social pain results from the activation of certain components in physical pain systems. Although social, clinical, health, and developmental psychologists have each explored aspects of social pain, recent work from the neurosciences provides a coherent, unifying framework for integrative research.

This edited volume provides the first comprehensive, multidisciplinary exploration of social pain.

Part I examines the subject from a neuroscience perspective, outlining the evolutionary basis of social pain and tracing the genetic, neurological, and physiological underpinnings of the phenomenon. Part II explores the implications of social pain for functioning in interpersonal relationships; contributions examine the influence of painkillers on social emotions, the ability to relive past social hurts, and the relation of social pain to experiences of intimacy. Part III examines social pain from a biopsychosocial perspective in its consideration of the health implications of social pain, outlining the role of stress in social pain and the potential long-term health consequences of bullying. The book concludes with an integrative review of these diverse perspectives. ... Read more
