Product Description
Read by the author

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, panic and anxiety attacks affect tens of millions of Americans. One of the first people who studied and wrote about anxiety and panic disorders was Dr. Claire Weekes.

Pass Through Panic gives the listener simple methods needed to pass through the web of fear, anxiety and panic that has imprisoned them. Weekes gives the sufferer hope that there is an end in sight to the cycle in which they are trapped. Her techniques of acceptance and surrender show that by passing through panic, rather than trying to stop it, you find yourself in a place of strength and optimism, rather than one of fear and frustration.

After listening to this audio, one will come away confident that Dr. Weekes truly understands the mind and feelings of the sufferer. This understanding lays the foundation for acceptance of the simple, four-step method that effectively deals with this disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best resource on the subject available...
The author has since passed away, and it's too bad... because I imagine there are endless scores of people that want to thank her for her books and tapes. There is SO much garbage out there on the subject, it'sdistressing. Not only that, but your average doctor doesn't have a clue when it comes to dealing with anxiety, outside of reaching into the cabinet for the latest drug samples the sales reps gave them.

This audio-book is for people who want to not just understand, but work on curing their problem. It's all about the approach... and in all the doctors I've visited, none ever made it so simple to understand. Probably because they really don't understand it themselves. Dr. Weekes herself says at one point in the book... "it's not the mystery that a nervously ill person thinks it is."Well, she's right. That doesn't mean it's easy to solve, but it really is simple. Once you realize that, you're half-way to a solution.

If you truly want to improve your situation and are ready to change your outlook and do a little work... this is an excellent resource. There aren't loads of lists to keep and charts to keep. It's just information to ingest and then put into play in your daily life. No BS.

Some people have a little problem with her "delivery." To that I say... get over it. She's from a different era and I actually find her delivery to be charming, if not even amusing at times.
It's a little stern, but you can hear the conviction in her voice. You can hear in her tone... that this is from experience. (As I recall, she was a sufferer herself at one point.)
Some of her terminology is a little dated, but the information she conveys is invaluable.

Every student going through med school should be made to listen to and understand this book, in my opinion... and if you're an anxiety sufferer, you must own this and give it a chance.
No magic pills, just the truth.

Product Description
Stanley Cohen's study of Mods and Rockers in the 1960s was a foundational text both in terms of investigating the workings of subcultural groups and identifying the concept of a 'moral panic' generated by the media, which leads to groups being vilified in the popular imagination, and inhibits rational debate about solutions to the social problems such groups represent. The insights Cohen provides into subculture and mass morality are as relevant today as they were when the book was originally published in 1972, as illustrated by the author's introduction for this new edition, in which he tracks moral panics over the last thirty years, commenting on the demonization of young offenders and asylum seekers and on the News of the World's 'name and shame' campaign against paedophiles.
Revisiting the theory of moral panic and exploring the way in which the concept has been used, this new edition features a select bibliography of key texts for further reading. The third edition of Folk Devils and Moral Panics makes available a valuable and widely recommended text. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars quaint Mods and Rockers
British society has traditionally and perhaps rightly prided itself on its tolerance of eccentrics and alternative views. Seeing all of this as contributing to a robust people's democracy. But there were also those regarded as deviants. Cohen's 3rd edition spends a lot of space on Britain of the 1950s and 60s; looking at the disaffected youths of that time. The Teddy Boys and the Mods and Rockers.

Unintentionally, to a current reader, the times and travails of British society may seem quaint. Cohen shows how these deviates raised real alarm amongst the Establishment. Whereas now to many, these groups are remembered in the rosy twinge of nostalgia. With hindsight, we now know that they were never any real threat to society.

Note also that while this 3rd edition came out in 2002, almost all of the new stuff seems confined to a long introduction. There is nothing in this that refers to the punk rock scene of the 1970s, which was also regarded with alarm.

Instead nowadays, the internal dangers to Britain from Islamist terrorists seems more troubling than the Mods and Rockers ever were. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
My doctor recommended this book to me to help me cope from stress produced from massive workloads at the job.It has been quite helpful. It also was great to gain a better understanding of what/how anxiety is created. That makes it easier to understand why the recommendations of the book work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Applied meditation
This book was quite helpful in grasping the usefulness of meditation.I have tried relaxation techniques before, but this book revealed how useful it really is.I originally read the book because the author was being interviewed by The Graedons on THE PEOPLES PHARMACY radio show.I got a copy from the library and liked it so much I actually purchased my own copy from Amazon.

Initially the book seemed repetitive and I almost quit reading it, but I persevered and found it to be quite helpful.I find it most useful when I awaken in the middle of the night and my mind "turns on" and will not turn off.Using what I learned in this book, I can turn off my mind and get back to sleep 9 times out of 10.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and inspirational advice
If you suffer from anxiety or a deep fear, you are not alone; this is a part of the human condition. But we don't have to suffer endlessly because anxiety has an internal structure in the form of negative thoughts and beliefs powered by emotional energy that has become frozen in place. Uncover these patterns of negative thoughts and you are on the way to making significant change. As a mindfulness-based psychotherapist, I use mindfulness as the primary tool for doing just this, and I would recommend anyone to learn more about the therapeutic use of mindfulness in conjunction with good self-analysis. I also recommend 'The Path of Mindfulness Meditation' available through Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Calming Your Anxious Mind
The book is clearly written and easy to understand.I even felt calm reading the book.It gives clear instructions on meditation practices to be used to help combat panic, fear and anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most psychologically sophisticated novels I've ever read
I am a psychotherapist interested in crime novels. This mystery novel found me holding my breath at the psychological suspense at times The writer creates psychologically complex characters and gradually links them to one another. She also paints a sense of place in nature and in a small village that one can feel with your senses.I had never heard of this author but looked up Agatha award winners and read one of her books, leading to this book. This book was far superior to the award winner she wrote!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
The sixth novel in the series does not disappoint! The various plot lines are fantastic and criss cross and intertwine with each other. The many characters and events keep the story moving at a good pace. The action, while not of blockbuster proportion, never stops until the last page. Wright has managed to paint an interesting (and sometimes quirky) picture of small town life.

Rehashing his previous exploits will keep Kaname busy, but it doesn't take long for the military mind of this soldier to bounce back with a bang - literally! 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic FMP
I'm a huge fan of the series and an avid collector of all things Full Metal Panicy. The characters and how they develope interest me the most. The almost tragic relationship between souske and kaname is what keeps me so deeply intrigued. I mean how can you not love the way they act with each other??! Many a time reading this comic in the quiet spaces of my dorm have i just burst out in laughter causing my roommate to think i'm nuts, only because i say to myself "thats souske alright!"

Fantastic and hilarious start to this new series of comics! Shouji keep up the great work! I look forward to more of them, and i hope you other FMP maniacs will do the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good laugh à la FMP!
Don't expect an actual rerun of the original FMP manga (or novel for that matter). This one emphasize more of the comic aspects of FMP! than the one done by Tetsu Tateo. The graphics are more comic-like and the plot not as complicated (think FMP: fumoffu). But don't get me wrong, it is still a good laugh.Sousuke is as much of a war-maniac as he can be (or maybe even more) while Kaname gets even more exasperated as ever and that's what reallyshines up in this new take of this popular serie. Don't miss it if you're a fan of FMP! (or not) and you liked the funny side of FMP!. ... Read more

Product Description
It is commonly acknowledged that sexual abuse of children is a grave and pervasive problem and that child molesters are predators who compulsively repeat their crimes and have little hope of cure. Yet as recently as twenty years ago many experts viewed the problem far less seriously, declaring that molestation was a very rare offense and that molesters were merely confused individuals unlikely to repeat their offenses. Over the past century, opinion has fluctuated between these radically different perspectives. This timely book traces shifting social responses to adult sexual contacts with children, whether this involves molestation by strangers or incestuous acts by family members. The book explores how and why concern about the sexual offender has fluctuated in North America since the late nineteenth century. Philip Jenkins argues that all concepts of sex offenders and offenses are subject to social, political, and ideological influences and that no particular view of offenders represents an unchanging objective reality. He examines the various groups (including mass media) who have been active in promoting particular constructions of the emerging problem, the impact of public attitudes on judicial and legislative responses to these crimes, and the ways in which demographic change, gender politics, and morality campaigns have shaped public opinion. While not minimizing sexual abuse of children, the book thus places reactions to the problem in a broad political and cultural context. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
Professor Jenkins takes a very troubling subject and looks at it from a socialogical point of view.He also presents it in a very dispassionate way. Some might find it callous but I don't.
The way law enforcement, psychology, and society in general has viewed the problem of child molestation in this country (as well as in Europe) has varied every few decades from the last half of the 19th Century through the 20th.Jenkins shows how this problem was viewed in those centuries. He also argues that there has been a moral panic concerning this problem every few decades.
He doesn't go into it in this book but in his book PEDOPHILES AND PRIESTS he argued that only about 1-2% of Catholic priests were involved with a sexual misconduct with a minor.MORAL PANIC shows that in the 60's and 70's child molestation and other sexual misconduct with minors was not considered a great problem.Even though he doesn't go into it much in this book it sheds some light on the current scandal involving the Catholic Church.Probably between 90-95% of the cases being reported in the media are from the 60's and 70's.
I think MORAL PANIC is an important book that more people should read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent chronicle of sex offender policy
Jenkins' book is a very well written and documented study of the various child sex abuse panics that have taken place during the past century. It demonstrates the role of the moral panic in the policy making process and shows how decisions have been made on popular opinion and misguided beliefs rather than solid facts. It is objectively written and is a very good resource for anyone interested in sex offender policy. The only down side of the book is its relatively limited information on moral panic theory as a general topic. For this, you will need to look at Goode and Ben Yehuda or Cohen.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Distrust all in whom the impulse to punish is strong" - Nietzsche.
The title quote is quoted in Chapter 13, "Full Circle."

Jenkins leads us through the history of the sex abuse "panics" from the Progressive Era to the modern day. We find that in the early 1900s research/science found there was a problem worse than imagined. How else could young children get STDs? When facts became panics, the problem was buried under political self gain and the requisite rhetoric: from the F.B.I. vying for funds and power against the newly created Federal Bureau of Narcotics, to the feminist blame of the "patriarchy," to the conservative cry of decadence. And so much more.

The real issue, as is happening today, got buried under rhetoric and unchecked extremism. Backlash was inevitable.

This book is a valuable read in general even if one is not interested in the subject. It is an excellent primer on how to read an article, or listen to a speech or a news anchor, and see though the propaganda and rhetoric.

To close with another Nietzsche quote: "A people wants to hurt with the evil that is evil today." This book explains how some can hijack a hot issue, worthy though it may be, for their own political gain. Anyone who cares about child abuse, especially knee jerk lawmakers too cowardly to speak their real minds about the shallow laws they pass, should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sober and vastly eridite survey - get it!
The emergence of "the child molester" as Public Enemy Number One -- or, conversely, as an image for hip audiences to snicker over -- is the topic of this book, and it examines how Americansociety has responded topedophilia over the past century. Theauthor sifts through an enormousvolume of evidence, and his toneis as sober as a judge.

He suggeststhat concern with the sexual abuse of children has developed in waves overthe past century or so. In each case, public awareness has gone through akind of cycle -- from reluctant awareness of the problem, to increasedpublic attention, then toa period of intense fascination and horrorculminating in thedemand that the government move in to actdecisively.

Jenkins argues that we have, for some time now, been in thefinal stages of the cycle. The expression "moral panic," whichgives the book its title, is a sociological term. Those who coined itdefine moral panic as a state in which public reaction to a problem"is out of all proportions to the actual threat offered, when'experts' perceive the threat in all but identical terms ... [and] when themedia representations universally stress 'sudden and dramatic' increases(in numbers involved or events) and 'novelty,' above and beyond that whicha sober, realistic appraisal could sustain."

What makes Moral Panicabsorbing is not so much Jenkins' diagnosis of the present situation as hiscareful reconstruction of how medical and legal institutions came torecognize and understand the existence of molestation. "In the openingyears of the twentieth century," he writes, "social and medicalinvestigators argued convincingly that American children were beingmolested and raped in numbers far higher than had been imagined ... By1910, social investigators were confirming the worst speculations about theprevalence of child sexual molestation, and panic about sex killers andperverts became acute about 1915." A similar pattern of increasedattention and growing anxiety ran from the late 1930s through the early1950s.

Conceptions of the nature and extent of sexual abuse changed fromdecade to decade. Extensive documentation -- from social-scientific works, newspaper stories, and mass entertainment forms like crime novels and film-- undermines the impression that pedophilia was only recognized a shorttime ago. Particularly striking are the parallels between the early yearsof the century and the present day: "In a foretaste of the 1970s and1980s," Jenkins writes of the Progressive era, "feminists alliedwith therapists, social workers, and moral reformers in order to defendchildren, and the new ideas were promulgated by a sensationalisticmedia." The wave of concern that peaked in the late 1940s brought withit demands -- also heard lately -- that sex offenders be turned over tomore or less permanent psychiatric hospitalization.

Following earlierpatterns, the cycle of attention, anxiety, and legislation that began inthe late 1970s ought to have burnt itself out by now. Clearly it has not.And some of the bogus "data" afloat about the menace suggeststhat "panic" is just the right word. "Far from marking a newera of indifference," Jenkins writes, "the year 1995wascharacterized by the furor over sex predator statutes and thefear ofcyberstalkers. The cycle has been broken in the modern era, when childabuse has become part of our enduring cultural landscape,a metanarrativewith the potential for explaining all socialand personal ills."

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of it's kind!
Philip Jenkins did it again. His previous book, 'Intimate Enemies: MoralPanics in Contemporary Great Britain' talked about child-abuse hysteriathat swept Britain some time ago. This new book is actually a history ofthe concept of child abuse and child abuser in USA in the twentiethcentury. The book talks in details how that concept looked like at the endof the last century and how it looks like now. I have never read before anybook that is so accurate and detailed as this one. For anyone interested inthe subject of how society viewed child abuse and child abusers and how isviewing it now, this book is must-have. And I am very happy that Jenkinsdecided to devote this book to the Joel Best who himself wrote similarbook, "Threatened Children: Rhetoric and Concern aboutChild-Victims"

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
This is very well written and organized book, written primarily for consumers, rather than professionals (who still will benefit, as I did). They have a knack for distilling things down to what is important to understand, as well as what to do.

Professionals and consumers alike will appreciate the Resource section in the Appendix. Many specific books and websites are recommended and nicely organized.

Product Description

Renowned for her poetry, Sylvia Plath was also a brilliant writer of prose. This collection of short stories, essays, and diary excerpts highlights her fierce concentration on craft, the vitality of her intelligence, and the yearnings of her imagination. Featuring an introduction by Plath's husband, the late British poet Ted Hughes, these writings also reflect themes and images she would fully realize in her poetry. Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams truly showcases the talent and genius of Sylvia Plath.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some awesome stories, some duds
Some of the stories are awesome, some are tedious to finish. It feels unfair to judge Sylvia on most of these stories, since she didn't publish a lot of them while alive, but it's quite apparent why she never wrote more prose: roughly half of the stories are about the same character, herself, vaguely disguised using a variety of fake names. Still, there are some gems here, the title story is brilliant if a bit unsatisfying at the end. In fact that is a common theme here...after finishing many of these stories, I was not sure what to think, and wasn't entirely sure what even happened (Sunday at the Mintons' stands out in this way too).

High points:
Snow Blitz, a chilling (in retrospect) essay about the winter during which Plath killed herself. Without that knowledge, it would be kind of charming, and her great imagery really shines through. "Thankfully, I cooked by gas." *shudder*

Stone Boy with Dolphin. Not sure if this is autobiographical or not, but it struck a cord with me as an honest exposition of the sometimes-futility of the party-heavy college experience (even though I'm of the opposite gender as her).

The Wishing Box, about a wife jealous of her new husband's vivid dreams.I almost cried at the end...

Overall, a solid read if you are a fan of her work, but easy to skip if you are not, hence I give it 3/5 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Portrait of an Evolving Writer
After reading "The Bell Jar", I was very disappointed that there were no more books to read by Sylvia Plath. That's why I was very happy to find this book of her other prose writings. The journal entries are fascinating and help the reader to understand the author to a more personal degree. Many of the stories resemble "The Bell Jar" in theme, like "Tongues of Stone", which tells of a young woman in a hospital. It is obvious that many of the stories were written when Sylvia Plath was very young, like "Initiation" (she won a prize for this from Seventeen magazine when she was 19). But many are very deep and complex, like "Johnny Panic" (dealing with a girl who works at a psychiatrist's office and is on the cusp of insanity herself) and "The Wishing Box" (about a young wife who is suicidal when she fears she has lost her imagination). I'd suggest this book for any Sylvia Plath fan or any fan of the short story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not her best but I love her anyway!
Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams by Sylvia Plath is a sloppy, inconsistent, and drab collection of her short stories, prose and diary experts. First of all, I think Plath was one of the most gifted poets that ever lived, I love her only novel, The Bell Jar and I thought I would love this book as well but it falls short and never truly shows Plath's genius in any form. Seems like this particular book was published just because Ariel sold extremely well. Some of the material is interesting but Plath's writing becomes awkward and tends to go off topic a lot. The only reason I am giving this book 4 stars is because I believe a lot of the stories were not completed and if she were still alive, she would have re-written most of her work before it ever saw the light of day.If you want to read some beatiful and haunting work from Plath, then I suggest The Bell Jar, and all her poetry. Have fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Autobiographical Stories
I enjoyed this book very much as a fan of Sylvia Plath but wonder whether a regular reader (not a fan) would enjoy it as much.
It has been suggested that the stories are autobiographical which I agree with and it was fascinating because as I read I could hear Plath voicing her opinions through the characters and she really spat her attitude all over the book.
The book is divided into three parts:
The more successful short stories and prose pieces
Other stories
Excerpts from notebooks.
If anyone wants to pick up this book and read a fascinating story (fan or not) then I suggest:
The Wishing Box, which explores the birth of marriage and the death to creativity
Mothers, which explores alienation and a greatly desperate attempt to fit in
And Ocean 1212-W, which is purely autobiographical and explores the loss of childhood innocence.
My favourite story was Snow Blitz.I think this is autobiographical too as it deals with a single Mother (American) living in a small flat in London with two children trying to deal with a bitter cold English winter.
I found this story rather amusing because I'm from the South East of England and snow is rather exciting and magical to us but when it starts to melt and freeze over we, in typical Brit style, start to complain.
If you only read this book for one thing then read the Introduction written by Ted Hughes. He supplies the reader with a great deal of information about the writing of these short stories as well as a lot of information about Plath herself; I certainly learnt a thing or two.

1-0 out of 5 stars Published for the sake of publication
I imagine that it's fairly hard to make a diary interesting and most of the diary excerpts found in this book seem to be published just for the sake of publication rather than for the actually content.I've read other diary entries by Plath outside of this book that were very interesting, so keep looking if you want to know about Plath (Wagner-Martin wrote a wonderful biography, however). The stories weren't interesting.I couldn't get into any of them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
Allows those who suffer anxiety or panic attacks to better understand their condition and do something about it in terms of self help. Can also be very useful for relatives of the patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get out of the cycle!
This writer really hits the nail on the head when she talks about the
whole cycle of panici.e., you freak out that you're going to have
a panic attack, which makes you have a panic attack, which makes you
avoid dealing with it, which makes you feel like a loser, which makes you
try to deal with it, which makes you freak out that you're going to
have a panic attack, which, duh, makes you have another panic attack!
But then there are actually some cool techniques to get OUT of the damn
cycle. So I recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Self Help Book
I recently got this and it is certainly an above average anti anxiety self help book, I have read many and this offers some real ways to reduce anxiety as it titles states. Its most certainly worth picking up.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Helps my Clients!
I am a professional in the healing arts, and over the years I've treated many clients who suffer from one form of anxiety disorder or another. Last year, one of my regulars got her hands on this book, and wow! She really showed tremendous improvement. She asked me if I would recommend it to my other clients, so I read it, and thought enough of it to suggest it to a few other clients with anxiety-related issues. So far, the word back has been totally positive. I'm embarassed to say it's taken me almost a year to get around to writing this review, but if it helps even one person with what I can vouch for being a particularly difficult problem to overcome, I've done my job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Help --No Bull.
Ninety-nine percent of thebooks I've read that were supposedly going to help me with my panic attacks have been (to put it charitably) so NOT helpful. Mostly they tend to skip out on the hard-core practical advice, hoping that your doctor and/or therapist will fill in all the difficult blanks. But Panic Free rocked my world. Even though it's easy to read (I found the writing stylekind of entertaining!) all the info is there, and it makes sense, and -- best of all-- it is user-friendly.
In order to feel like any bookis helping me get better, I really need proof it's working. Since there are exercises to do in here -- and since they are totally working for me -- I feel way more confident that I can recover FOR GOOD.
In all, I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good thriller
You're instantly plunged into intrigue and suspense, wondering who has done what to whom. The plot is generally good, although there were scenes that I found set up specially and they seemed quite obvious - example: Even Casher doesn't know whether to trust CIA agents or whether they are double agents, he's already been caught out before by double agents who are supposedly from CIA, but then he gets in a car with 2 unknown agents and - unsurprisingly - they are again double agents who kidnap him. Some of the plot was a little confusing at times as well.

That being said, it was a good fast-paced thriller, easy to read and enjoyable.

I think if you like Lee Childs or Harlan Coben's stand alone thrillers, you will like this novel.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Okay Read
One morning Evan Cashier gets a phone call from his mom telling him that he has to come home right away. She tells him that she doesn't want to say anything on the phone, but she'll explain everything. He doesn't want to go, but he does. He he arrives home, he sees his mother's body on the floor. The killers are still there and go after Evan. While he's being chased his world started to fall a part. He has to figure out who's killed his mom, and after him, and find his father. He can't trust anyone because people all around him are lying to him. He soon learns that his parents aren't who he thought they were. As he learns the truth, more and more people are after him, and he has to figure out why.

That's pretty much an over view of the plot.

Over all it was an okay read that started off so good, but then gets silly. When I found out the truth on what was going on, and the reason's why Evan's mom was killed, and his parents past, it was just so silly.I didn't mind it that it was so far fetched, but I didn't think it was logical. The more I learned about Evan and his family, the less I cared.

The characters were okay, but kind of flat. There was one person who was afraid of snakes, but nothing was made of that.

If you want to read it, I suggest you get it at the library.

4-0 out of 5 stars thrilling read
A great book. Cant recommend it enough.
You will struggle to put it down.
much like Boune Identity.... perhaps better

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment
Starts with a bang, rapidly peters out and becomes ridiculous. I had high hopes after reading some of Mr. Abbott's other work. Disappointing read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Read - Full Of Action
I picked up this book through my girlfriend who absolutely loved the book. She loves true crime action books and even though this isn't true crimes, there is a level of investigation Evan has to go though to figure out what is true and what is a lie in his predicament.

I do agree with most of the reviews that this book is a little over the top in the realistic department. Personally, I really didn't mind, it added an exciting element to the story that had you at the edge of your seat not knowing how Evan got so lucky (how many bullets can this guy dodge!).

The only issue I seen with the story was the character development. I felt like the characters (including Evan) were distant in a way. I felt as if they could kill off any character in this book and it would have no emotional effect on me. It is important for a writer to make the characters as close and personal to the reader as possible, so that whatever extreme emotional situation that characters are put in, the reader feels the same.

Also, some of Evans reactions in tragic situations seemed to be more apathetic than I would expect a normal Joe's would be in the same situation. This made scenes that should be rather grewsome, just slightly awkward.

Over all though, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast pace book full of action and surprises. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Really is helping me!
I've suffered from panic attacks for nearly all of my adult life (let's just say I've held @ 29 for a while!).While I don't suffer from an attack daily (although I did in the beginning), I do suffer from the FEAR of having an attack.Panic is slowly eroding my life away, and I find myself giving into it as I get older.I've read articles and information online about panic disorder and how to cope with it.I found this book and read it over the weekend.I felt as though Ms. Trickett cracked open my chest and looked into my heart and soul!At times, I cried because I felt as though she were reading my life's story back to me.The best thing I took away from this book is the information on hyperventilating - I had NO IDEA this was going on during a panic attack! In my opinion, Chapter 9, "Improve Your Breathing," is the MOST helpful how-to literature I've read about diaphragmic breathing.I've practiced yoga in both a studio and at home with DVDs, as well as found online information about deep breathing, and I was really able to put this type of breathing into practice thanks to this book.I've been practicing it as often as I can and I feel very calm and collected - I'm hoping that the positive practice becomes habit so I can remain calm.I also hope to be able to call on this breathing in the event of a panic attack AND before trying something that would put me in the way of a situational panic attack (flying and driving on the freeway are 2 things that toss me into panic).I would recommend putting this book into your library as a resource and couple it with any and all other resources you are using (therapy, medicine, etc.).For those of us that suffer from panic/anxiety disorder, we need all the tools we can get in our arsenal!

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple Solutions You Can Apply Today for Immediate Results
After suffering personally from panic attacks, Trickett compiles numerous studies and self-help answers from medical journals and files, scientific publications, and empirical wisdom on how to recognize symptoms of panic attacks and how to treat them yourself.
Covering topics from exhausted nerves to low blood sugar she gives some wonderful suggestions on how a healthy diet, muscle maintenance and proper breathing can reduce the cause and effect of Agoraphobia.
Great book with lots of practical information.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mother of a Panic Attack Sufferer
While I appreciate Ms. Trickett's efforts, it does not address the seriousnes of some panic attack sufferers. My daughter suffered up to 35 panic attacks a day and was quickly becoming agoraphobic (fear of going aside for fear of triggering an attack). While prayer plays a role, her book is not sufficient enough to truly deal with the seriousness of this issue. It has taken two years of therapy to bring to the surface the root of the problem and telling a victim to pray, go outside daily, laugh, etc. really is not much help.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good intentions but at times counterproductive
Although the author is obviously driven by good intentions, such as promoting natural therapies which are invariably ignored by traditional medicine, she seems to have a dangerous prejudice against the use of medications which can be very useful for the treatment of more serious forms of panic attacks. The relaxation, diet, breathing retraining and massage techniqies she recommends are all very nice things and can be very helpful for mild sufferers. They can undoubtedly also be of great help for people with a more severe condition. However, writing that tranquillizers and antidepressants can actually cause panic attacks - as she does - can considerably increase a patient's fears and phobias about taking the medication he or she has been rightly prescribed.
I found certain parts of the book as extremely helpful - such as the ones where she describes what happens in our body during panic attacks - which helps to de-mistify them and put them into perspective. However, as I pointed out, her stigma against tranquillizers, sleeping pills and even anti-depressants is absolutely counterproductive and it ignores the fact that millions of people would have to leave their jobs and isolate themselves for months if they avoided taking them - thus perhaps adding to their low self-esteem and in some cases precipitating their depressive symptoms to uncontrollable levels. Although the underlying conditions are very different, what she writes is comparable to telling people who suffer from diabetes they should be careful about taking insulin because they may become addicted. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars LO, THE BEHEMOTHWALKS
Tessa and Chidori have been captured by the terrorist organization A-21 and are being used as pawns to get information out of Kalinin. Even if they can find a way to escape, Sosuke is missing, and might be dead, and A-21 is preparing to activate "The Behemoth", a monstrous Lambda driver mecha that makes Mithril's AS's look tiny by comparison. And its pilot is half insane because he needs drugs to pilot it. We also get some background on Tessa, something we never see in the anime version. Parts of this book have already been adapted in anime form but half of it has not, so if you liked the anime, you should check this out. The thing that I like about the manga is that Sosuke and Chidori's relationship has a lot more tenderness to it. There are moments such as them sheltering from a rainstorm and Sosuke offering her his sleeping bag and Chidori asking if she can use his lap as a pillow. There's also a lot of action here, so this would make a good read whether you're a guy or a girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Granoff saved my life!
I was suffering from what was initially believed to be a heart problem- tachycardia, sweating, high anxiety, faintness, for no apparent cause. These symptoms began quite suddenly, for no apparent reason. Later, the symptoms became so severe that I developed phobias that put great restrictions on my ability to live and work. Because I love life and the outdoors, and needed to keep working, I began to do my own research. After several doctors told me that there was no such thing as a true "panic attack," I found Dr. Granoff- practically in my own back yard. I ordered the book and video, and learned that not only was I NOT alone, but that there was a treatment for my problem which would allow me to resume a normal life. Anxiety and panic are real, not something one can simply "snap out of," and these are illnesses that can be treated and managed. Dr. Granoff will work with you regardless of your circumstances. He really cares!
I have been a patient of his for almost 10 years, so I know of what I speak. His wife Ann who runs the office, and Yellow Lab "Nugget" who greets the patients with a kind brown eyed gaze and wagging tail are wonderful too and the three of them make a team that is hard to beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT Resource for Anxiety or Panic Disorder Sufferers
This is my very first review, although I have been using Amazon for many many years... This book is incredible. It is clearly written, easy to follow, and provides a vast amount of information in a condensed 90-page book. This book outlines what many other books written about this topic do, but builds on it by offering a real, no-nonsense guide to selecting a qualified medical professional to assist the reader with help.It is well-documented that therapy is one of the most effective treatment options for people suffering from anxiety disorders, especially panic disorder in particular. I speak from personal experience, as I have suffered from both anxiety and panic disorders for many years. As someone who has scoured all available resources in an effort to educate myself on this, I am truly glad I found this book. Simply put, if you or someone you know is dealing with these issues, this book is a great place to start.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dated; Really pushes the Medications
Written and updated way back in 1997; would have been better to have the latest information on the medicines in the intervening 10 years. His insistence on pushing the anti-anxiety medications - despite their addictive qualities - made me uncomfortable. He also seems disdainful of alternative methods of treating/overcoming anxiety/panic disorders.I had hoped to really like his book and find it useful and reassuring, but instead, I felt annoyed at reading it - as if the author was arrogant with his opinions and attitude about treatment options.I cannot recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read!!!
Prior to reading Dr. Granoff's book I had tried numerous medications, psychotherapy, CBT, desensitization, etc. etc.Nevertheless, the panic remained.I was on the fast track to complete agorophobia.Subsequent to reading his book I met with him and now I am living my life again and pursuing a career path and life that seemed impossible before. With the CORRECT knowledge, treatment for what is a physical condition, and some personal work; you can overcome panic disorder.I highly recommend his book.In short, Dr. Granoff is a REAL consumer advocate for those suffering from this crappy disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars EYE OPENING
Dr. Granoff's book is superb. For anyone who has ever suffered a panic attack, this book should be the first one that you read.

The well-credentialed Dr. Granoff begins with a thorough, yet understandable, analysis of what occurs chemically in a person's brain when they suffer a panic attack. (The list of symptoms will absolutely surprise you. You may find that panic disorder has been manifesting itself over many years, sometimes worsening in the absence of appropriate treatment.)

An interesting fact that I discovered in this book is that benzodiazepine is a naturally occurring chemical in the brain. Dr. Granoff compassionately, yet analytically, explains how this chemical functions in the brain, and how panic attacks can occur when there are deficient quantities of naturally-occurring benzodiazepine.

Dr. Granoff does not say this, but, it is possible that, after you read this book, you will conclude that the pharmaceutical industry deliberately pushes its new, PATENTED, EXPENSIVE drugs, while at the same time dogging the benzodiazepine family of drugs (Xanax, etc.) because the exclusive patents on the benzodiazepines have expired and they are, thus, a cheap (and perhaps more effective) means of treating your panic disorder.

Of course, only a competent psychiatrist can properly determine your clinical diagnosis, but, Dr. Granoff gives an accessible view of panic disorder and its solutions.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, however, Dr. Granoff gives you lots of hope by sharing his substantial clinical experience in treating this potentially debilitating disorder. If you can stop panic attacks, then that is a victory for you and your loved ones, and Granoff explains how victory is possible.

Many thanks to Dr. Granoff for writing a book that steared me in the right treatment direction. I consider it providence that this plain-looking book would have helped me so much. I was unable to carry on my profession before I sought the appropriate treatment after reading this book. I have a life now, and a hope. And that is more than I can say that I had two years ago. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Forget What You Have Read....
Forget what you've read about this particular book by Sylvia Plath. Most reviews published upon its release is 1977 hinted that the book confirms that Plath's finest talent was poetry. While that statement is apt, that is not to say her abilities as a prose fiction writer are not close on its heels--remember, she did write "The Bell Jar".

Indeed, Plath's name was made in America partly on her prose writing as well. This book collects the best of those short stories, which were featured in literary magazines during the 1950s and 60s. As well, some of her journalism is found here, and last but not least, samples of her student notebooks from Cambridge.

The edition being offered here is the longer 2nd edition from 1979 which was expanded with nearly ten more short stories that surfaced in an academic arhcive in Indiana in 1978. While most collectors struggle to acquire first editions--if it's good writing that you want, this 2nd edition will please you far more.

Lastly, while Ted Hughes' introductions to Plath's work have been met with cynicism over the years (considering his role in her life and eventual suicide), Hughes' introduction stands out as a flattering and insightful tribute to the work of his first wife.

I am glad I gave myself the chance to read and enjoy this book despite the warnings. I guess some of the best books do not necessarily appeal to masses of people--ahh, that is the joy of having a mind. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book On Anxiety Disorders
C.B. Scrigner's From Panic To Peace of Mind is truly one of the classics, when it comes to books on anxiety and panic disorders.

Dr. Scrigner's book is unlike most that you will find on the subject, in that he approaches anxiety disorders from a largely unbiased point of view. Most books in this category preach purely cognitive methods of combating anxiety disorders and agoraphobia, while others focus on the physiological aspects of the disease. This is one of the few that draws a balance between the two, and acknowledges that no one solution is right for everyone.

This is a pretty basic book from most perspectives, so you will not need any prior knowledge of medical jargon in order to keep up. Yet it largely sticks to a clinical overview that is aimed at doctors, patients and others who are affected by anxiety/panic disorders, agoraphobia, obsessive compulsive disorders, and more simple phobias.

About the only downside of this book is its limited size and depth. It's a fairly quick read. There is only enough room for a fairly basic discussion of very complicated subjects such as psychopharmacology, cognitive therapy, methods of dealing with stress, etc. Still, it gives an excellent overview of these diseases, and the basic methods of treatment.

This is definitely not a book that pretends to "cure" people of phobias or psychological disorders, as many seem to do these days. What it will do is give you a much better understanding of how anxiety disorders "work" and how to most effectively treat them. For anyone with an interest in anxiety or panic disorders, this is an excellent volume to have on your bookshelf. ... Read more
