Product Description
This book has been created for patients who have decided to make education and research an integral part of the treatment process. Although it also gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it tells patients where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to paresthesia (also ), from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research. Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable and often irrational worry about everyday things that is disproportionate to the actual source of worry. This excessive worry often interferes with daily functioning, as individuals suffering GAD typically catastrophe, anticipate disaster, and are overly concerned about everyday matters such as health issues, money, death, family problems, friend problems or work difficulties. They often exhibit a variety of physical symptoms, including fatigue, fidgeting, headaches, nausea, numbness in hands and feet, muscle tension, muscle aches, difficulty swallowing, bouts of difficulty breathing, trembling, twitching, irritability, sweating, insomnia, hot flashes, and rashes. These symptoms must be consistent and on going, persisting at least 6 months, for a formal diagnosis of GAD to be introduced. Approximately 6.8 million American adults experience GAD. ... Read more

Excerpt:ICD -10: R 60.1 Anasarca , also known as "extreme generalized edema " is a medical condition characterised by widespread swelling of the skin due to effusion of fluid into the extracellular space . It is usually caused by either congestive heart failure , liver failure (cirrhosis of the liver) or renal failure /disease and severe malnutrition/protein deficiency. It can also be created from the administration of exogenous intravenous fluid. Certain plant-derived anticancer chemotherapeutic agents, such as docetaxel , cause anasarca through a poorly understood capillary leak syndrome . This condition is also called leucophlegmatia. Cyanosis is a blue coloration of the skin and mucous membranes due to the presence of5g/dl deoxygenated hemoglobin in blood vessels near the skin surface. Although human blood is always a shade of red (except in rare cases of hemoglobin-related disease ), the optical properties of skin distort the dark red color of deoxygenated blood to make it appear bluish . The elementary principle behind cyanosis is that deoxygenated hemoglobin is more prone to the optical bluish discoloration, and also produces vasoconstriction that makes it more evident. The scattering of color that produces the blue hue of veins and cyanosis is similar to the process that makes the sky appear blue : some colors are refracted and absorbed more than others. During cyanosis, tissues are uncharacteristically low on oxygen, and therefore tissues that would normally be filled wit... ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles!Paresthesiais a sensation of tingling, pricking, or numbness of a person's skin with no apparent long-term physical effect. It is more generally known as the feeling of "pins and needles" or of a limb "falling asleep" (although this is not directly related to the phenomenon of sleep). The manifestation of paresthesia may be transient or chronic. Paresthesias of the hands and feet are common, transient symptoms of the related conditions of hyperventilation syndrome, often open mouth, and panic attacks. Other common examples occur when sustained pressure has been applied over a nerve - inhibiting/stimulating its function. Removing the pressure will typically result in gradual relief of these paresthesias, often described as a "pins and needles" feeling. Another cause could be eg. if the leg is bent at the knee for a long period of time, then released, the same effect ensues. This is because the blood circulation is cut short while leg is bent. ... Description:
Paresthesias are the first symptom that people report following toxic doses of methylmercury. The authors conducted a psychophysical study of tactile sensation to evaluate the somatosensory abilities of subjects living in a methylmercury-polluted area around Minamata City, Japan. The authors examined control subjects and methylmercury-exposed subjects with and without numbness. A history of methylmercury exposure was taken and a neurological examination performed. Aluminum-oxide abrasive papers were used as stimuli in a psychophysical sensory examination of fine-surface-texture discrimination. Difference thresholds from 3@mm were calculated by the two-alternative, forced-choice technique. Difference thresholds in control subjects were also calculated for comparison. The difference threshold was 6.3@mm in exposed subjects with sensory symptoms, 4.9@mm in exposed subjects without sensory symptoms, and 2.7@mm in control subjects. Acuity of fine-surface-texture discrimination was disturbed not only in subjects with clinical complaints of hand numbness, but also in subjects without hand numbness who lived in the district where methylmercury exposure occurred. Sensory testing using a psychophysical test of fine-surface-texture discrimination in this population suggests that the number of individuals affected by methylmercury exposure in the polluted area was greater than previously reported. ... Question: What treatment do you recommend for jellyfish stings? Many patients apply MSG to the injury, and one of my colleagues occasionally offers local lidocaine infiltration of the most painful sites. Recently, a patient who had used MSG reported paresthesia in the affected leg and accompanying light-headedness. She declined lidocaine injection, so I treated her with cool compresses and systemic antihistamines. ... Read more
