5-0 out of 5 stars book on parkinson's
This book was recommended by a friend who has parkinson's and she said it answered so many questions.I bought it for another who had recently learn that she has parkinson's and she had many questions.I would recommend it to anyone interested in acquiring knowledge to help yourself or others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Info!
I'm 29 and was dx'd with a neurodegenerative disease(unsure which one) a little over a year ago after a barium swallow test confirmed oropharyngeal dysphagia.I believe I may have YOPD but I don't have resting tremor yet.So i've tried to educate myself with all these neuro diseases and this book is by far the best i've read on Parkinson's.My only question is about tremor and YOPD.Every other book i've read and all the info on the net says that most people with YOPD don't have tremor as a first symptom.This book says that tremor is almost always the first symptom of YOPD.So now I'm totally confused again. Besides that, it's the best on this subject.Remember, physicians learned what they know from reading books like these.They aren't magicians.Make sure you make a list of symptoms and educate yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good concise information
This book provides detailed, concise, information concerning Parkinson's disease.It's easy to read and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide Book To PD
Parkinson's disease also known as PD is a degenerative neurological disorder of the central nervous system that often impairs the sufferer's motor skills, speech, and other functions. It was named after the English Physician James Parkinson, who first described the illness in a paper he wrote in 1917 entitled "Essay on the Shaking Palsy" and even today we still refer to it as the "shaking palsy." It is estimated that over one million people in the USA have Parkinson's Disease and the numbers are growing each year.

It has been five years since the first edition of Parkinson's Disease: A Complete Guide For Patients & Families first appeared. As we are informed in the Preface of the second edition, much progress has been made in the management and treatment of PD. These important developments include a greater understanding of the fundamental causes of the disease, the role of genes and heredity in the disease, advances in the role of surgery as a treatment, and the introduction of new drugs to treat the symptoms. Increased research on disease-modifying or neuroprotective therapies that may slow the disease's progression has also been undertaken. All of these new avenues are discussed in the second edition in addition to who gets PD, signs and symptoms, diagnosing PD, treatment and other issues as illness, hospitalization, and present research. There is also considerable ink devoted to many nonmotor symptoms connected to PD that may occur, including depression, apathy, anxiety, sweating, sexual dysfunction, problems of memory, sleep problems, bladder problems, and constipation.There is an entire section devoted to questions and answers as well as a list of resources and a comprehensive index.

The book's organization is tidy without being overwhelming and each page manages to pack in a wealth of information in a focused manner. The tone is conversational and the many topics explored are extremely beneficial to anyone who has PD or is taking care of someone who has this illness. Every chapter begins with a summary in bold type of the topics to be discussed. The issue of how to explain unfamiliar terms and concepts to the layman is always vexing. However, the authors effectively overcome this problem by explaining terms in the text itself rather than have readers look to a glossary of terms or elsewhere. Moreover, the use of images, tables and diagrams throughout this comprehensive book are highly appropriate and add interest and greatly simplify the understanding of the symptoms of PD and its management.

William J. Weiner, M.D., is the director of the Maryland Parkinson's Disease Center and professor and chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.He has authored many books and papers on PD. Lisa M. Shulman, M.D., is a professor of neurology at the University of Maryland. Anthony F. Lang, M.D., is a professor of neurology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Lang is the director of the Morton and Glorida Shulman Movement Disorders Center at the Toronto Western Hospital.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent exercise book
This book is terrific for those with Parkinson's disease, but stretching can benefit anyone, especially the elderly.
I have read and heard more and more from doctors about the benefits of exercise for Parkinson's patients.There is no cure for this disease, so any information on slowing the progression of the disease is useful. It is a disease that manifests a different set of symptoms for each sufferer, but some commonalities can beback pain, loss of balance, postural instability and slowness or freezing of movement. Soft or slurred speech is also a common symptom. Many Parkinson patients have mask like facial expressions due to infrequent blinking and loss of facial muscle control and tone.
This book has exercises that stretch various muscle and muscle groups to help keep or regain balance and stability.There are exercises to keep the face muscles loose and keep up one's speech volume.
There are levels of exercises so one can do the exercises seated and move on to more vigorous movement, or continue at the seated level.
Each exercise is accompanied by photos which are very clear.The book is in a loose leaf format which makes it very easy to keep open.
I find it extremely useful. It helps keep me as limber and balanced as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended by Cleveland Clinic neurologist...
My husband is in the early stages of Parkinson's Disease. His neurologist suggested that he begin these exercises & also that he begin riding an exercise bike, set on no resistance, for 80-90 RPM, for at least 15 minutes, 6 days a week(this is an exciting study that is proving to help relieve some PD patients' symptoms)

Not knowing if there was a difference between the book & the dvd, we purchased both Delay the Disease -Exercise and Parkinson's Disease & Delay the Disease Exercise and Parkinson's Disease DVD.My husband has since learned that he didn't need the DVD. The book's photos and instructions are clear enough for him to understand. If you'd rather watch & exercise along, the DVD is the best choice for you.

The book is spiral bound and lays flat; you can easily see the photos & read the instructions as you exercise.

The DVD is nice because the exercises are performed outside. You can follow along with David Zid, a professional fitness instructor.When David Zid researched exercise & PD, he found only a few basic exercises had been designed for the PD patient. He knew that he could help PD patients and developed this exercise plan.

Exercise Options
This book is broken down into several sections. I'll try to summarize:
Wake Up Call, Walking & Balance Drills, Cardiovascular Exercise, Strength Training --Workout with weights, Non-weight (Core) Days--. Facial & Voice Exercises, Night Time Stretching.

The exercises are broken down into levels of difficulty:
~~~Level A - performed in a seated position, the basic exercise which everyone should be able to accomplish no matter their PD severity.
~~~Level B - tougher than A. More balance & stability is needed; some exercises may be performed in the standing position if applicable to your level.
~~~Level C - is the hardest. Good balance, stability, and hand mobility are needed.
The morning and evening exercises take about 15 minutes each.The other exercises take 45 min to an hour for my husband to complete.
Because my husband is in the early stages of PD, he's not sure how much the exercises are helping him, but he knows it can't hurt.PD is progressive, but can be greatly improved with an exercise routine.
You can find more information and a 'Fit Tip of the Month' at the websitedelaythedisease dot com.
4-0 out of 5 stars Delay the disease - exercise and Parkinsons disese
I am finding this book useful as an exercise aid to keep my body more flexible and to avoid some of the stiffness which comes with PD. I have not attempted all exercises yet - but am working on it. I have found exercise also helps to feel less depressed and more positive. Robyne WallerDelay the Disease -Exercise and Parkinson's Disease
5-0 out of 5 stars Help When Needed
This book is like a friend. It coaxes, encourages and explains. The easy-to-use format makes it possible to use by myself. Exercises are very well depicted and there's no confusion . I'm really glad I have it, and try to devote time each day to using it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Focus on those exercises
Purchased with PD[[ASIN:0470073950 Parkinson's Disease For Dummies (For Dummies (Health & Fitness)) which provides a wide range of information about PD and includes an excellent illustrated chapter on diet and exercise.
I like that Delay the Disease -Exercise and Parkinson's Disease is a spiral book with diagrams. Guidance is provided to help design a weekly schedule. Exercises are grouped by degree of difficulty and tabs allow speedy reference to them while you are working out.
Dummies is my reference tool but this book is used every day. I envision tossing this into my suitcase when travelling to ensure I do my exercises. ... Read more
Product Description
Nearly one million Americans, including Michael J. Fox and Muhammad Ali, suffer from Parkinson's Disease. Now, a leader in the fight against Parkinson's, Dr. J. Eric Ahlskog of the Mayo Clinic, has written the definitive guide for patients and their families.Dr. Alhskog offers a crystal-clear, nuts-and-bolts approach to the treatment of PD, distilled from over twenty years of experience as a clinician and researcher. His goal is to educate the patient so that they can better team with their doctor to do battle with the disease, streamlining the decision-making process and enhancing their treatment. To do this, Dr. Ahlskog offers a gold mine of information: How do I know if I have PD? What kinds of tests can I take? What medications slow the progress of the disease? What if medications don't help my tremor? What kinds of movement problems may develop later? How can I cope with insomnia and daytime sleepiness, dizziness and depression, memory problems, paranoia, and delusions? Indeed, the book covers virtually every topic related to Parkinson's, from sexual impotence and skin rashes, to the role of nutrition, exercise, and physical therapy. In addition, Dr. Ahlskog discusses brain surgery (though he urges that patients only consider this as a last resort) and such experimental therapies as stem cell transplantation and gene therapy. There are also lists of support and advocacy groups and Internet sites that focus on Parkinson's.The ultimate guide to symptoms and treatment, this superb book is the first place patients should turn for reliable, easy-to-grasp information on Parkinson's disease. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Parkinson's Disease for Dummies
This is a wonderful book for a good overall definition of Parkinson's Disease.After initial diagnosis, this is a great place to learn more to ask your doctor pertinent questions that you would not know to ask otherwise.
4-0 out of 5 stars PD for Dummies
We were first introduced to this book through our local library. Liked it so much, we bought it through Amazon. There's a lot written about PD and we've read most of it. There are plenty of websites dedicated to Parkinson's. But it's nice to have one book that concisely addresses the disease. It's honest, not too preachy, and appears accurate. What more would a 63 year old man with Parkinson's want?
4-0 out of 5 stars What You Need to Know
This is a straightforward presentation of what you (and perhaps others in your life) need to know about Parkinson's. It's very basic, and not particularly inspirational. Nevertheless, facts are facts -- and you'll find them here. Some of the situations I'd like to know more about are not covered in a lot of detail. But it's comprehensive, and touches on many aspects of the disease. ... Read more
5-0 out of 5 stars What your Doctor May Not Tell you About Parkinson's Disease
If you are looking for another direction, other than prescription drugs, then this book is for you.There is great information on the holistic approach that will provide relief from the effects of Parkinson's disease for many people.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for anyone affected by Parkinson's Disease.
This is by and far the best book that I read on the subject of PD. It is comprehensive, written by a PD specialist, is easy to read, considers many treatment options, and is reassuring. Parkinson's Disease is so frightening that many people, including doctors, think that little can be done about it; this book shows you why that is not so and provides information so that you can control your disease and still live your life.
Thank you Doctor!
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for the average person
Despite my stack of books on parkinson's,I find myself almost always refering to this book for most of my questions. And answers are usually there in a nondepressing style. What's more the book goes into alternative methods of treatment as well as the conventional, Many things your doctor won't take the time to tell you.
5-0 out of 5 stars an incredibly invaluable resource
I've had Parkinson's for a few years now, and, at age 51, have the ignoble distinction of being among those deemed "early onset." This book was among the first I bought when I was diagnosed, and stayed in the pile of books doctors and medical associations were gracious and generous enough to give me. Once I got to it, however, I quickly realized it is among the best. Descriptions, definitions, explanations... All are presented in clear, straightforward, easy-to-understand language, all are thorough without getting long-winded, and all are compassionate without being sappy or unrealistically "everything will be great." I appreciate the even-handedness of both her allopathic and holistic treatment descriptions, not offering much in the way of criticism nor over-the-top praise, just presenting the many options available. In glancing through the table of contents as i write this, to refresh my memory, i find it hard to really encapsulate this book, it is so packed with useful information. Like, how to find a great doctor. Suffice it to say that, from my experience and my belief in balancing both western and alternative medicine, this book is invaluable, for patient, friends, and family. ... Read more
Product Description
Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder characterized by tremor, stiffness, and slow gait. It affects 500,000 people in the United States, with approximately 50,000 new cases diagnosed annually. But its impact is much wider. Family members with little understanding of the disease often find themselves struggling to help their loved one navigate the complexities of the health care system. Patients wonder, Which treatments are best for me? Will I be able to live on my own? Should I join a drug trial? In this straightforward, compassionate guide, Nutan Sharma and Elaine Richman address these concerns and more. They provide a thorough review of the etiology, diagnosis, and current treatment of Parkinson's, with special consideration given to the effect on family dynamics and routines--including the often neglected topics of long-term care and sexual function. The authors also review the pros and cons of various alternative therapies, including nutritional supplements, massage therapy, and traditional Chinese medicine.
Too often, with Parkinson's disease, a loved one serves as medical interpreter, patient advocate, and caregiver. In Parkinson's Disease and the Family, Nutan Sharma and Elaine Richman draw on the latest research and clinical practice techniques to offer valuable suggestions for managing patient care and, perhaps more important, for healing the family unit.
"The IKE Disease," is a one on one counseling session with the reader (teenagers) encouraging them to make decisions leading to a happy, successful life.IKE is used in high schools for group counseling and is always well received by the students.The book is a must read for parents, and their children, because it sets forth positive concepts for young people.There many good books written instructing parents on raising their children.IKE is different in that it offers positive steps, encouraging teenagers to do something to help themselves.
5-0 out of 5 stars This was a good book
A comprehensive collection of current and on-going research, treatments and case studies, this amazingly small book provides a great summary of everything you will read about Parkinson's in random web searches.The best part is that it is completely comprehensible for the lay person.I especially recommend this book for family members such as parents and siblings who may not be involved in day to day care-partnering with the Parkinson's Patient, but who may want to have an understanding of what is happening (and what is going to happen) to their family member.
5-0 out of 5 stars Addressing the daily living challenges of Parkinson's
Parkinson's is a movement disorder which affects 500,000 people in the US and adds thousands of new cases annually, but despite its prevalence, families often have little resources to guide them in considering treatment options, drug trail potentials, family dynamics, and disruptions and adjustments to daily living. Parkinson's Disease And The Family: A New Guide addresses all manner of family concerns and is a top pick for this reason, going where competitors do not in addressing the daily living challenges of Parkinson's. Especially appropriate for the non-specialist general reader, Parkinson's Disease And The Family is ideal for community libraries.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exercise and PD
This book reveals more than I expected about how to counter the symptoms of Parkinson's by deliberately practicing movements. The author has an understanding of the challenges faced by PD sufferers. I've found re-affirmation of some of my own deductions about moving better by intentionally visualizing an action before willing to accomplish a movement. I am convinced that exercise is the best medicine to slow the progression of this disease. The author's experience conducting exercise classes in conjunction with medical institutions makes his suggested exercise routine invaluable. I've never heard many of the insights offered in this volume anywhere else. For example, there's a section explaining the benefits of yawning. Another section tells how to use gravity to help turn over in bed.
I've added exercises from this book to my attempt to counter PD symptoms. I was diagnosed ten years ago. Right now, I attend water exercise and Tai Chi classes, walk at least twenty minutes a day, square dance or contra dance at least twice a week, and do several exercises from a physical therapist to improve my posture. With the latest findings about the plasticity of the brain, I think that we should concentrate on moving more to develop new neural pathways which over-ride the old habitual movements that used to be 'automatic." This book is a good place to start because it contains strategies to ameliorate specific PD symptoms before they develop.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good exercises.
The exercise directions, with photos, are easy to follow. There is a companion two disc DVD set available from the author's web-site. The DVDs are easier to learn from, but the book is also very informative and useful.
Book arrived on time as expected. Exercises are excellent for someone suffering from Parkinson's Disease. ... Read more
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This book is is simplistic and preachy with an anti-Western-medicine bent. The book is not useless; it does provide a decent summary of many of the alternative PD therapies but one can get 90% of the same information free from better public sources and without the "woo-woo". The author should have read Carl Sagan's "The Demon Haunted World". If you are so lazy and so stupid that you cannot do your own reasearch on the internet and you also enjoy being reinforced in your "doctors don't know" beliefs then you will enjoy the book. Otherwise save your money.
5-0 out of 5 stars Natural Therapies for Parkinson's Disease
I found this book very informative and easy to understand. Plus,(even though I am a trained herbalist) I found the section on constipation of excellent value with info I hav'nt read before. Also the dietary and supplementary considerations are well thought out and easy to undertake. All in all an excellent book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Integrative approach to Parkinson's Disease
Dr. Mischley presents an integrative approach to Parkinson's Disease, a hopeful stew of information about how one might address the disease from perspectives beyond that of conventional medicine. The book is written for people who have relatives with Parkinson's (or as Dr. Mischley calls them, those looking to discourage the disease), for sufferers of Parkinson's who might benefit from additional therapies, and for medical doctors who want to know the scientific rationale for her recommendations. It provides practical suggestions based on more than 80 research papers and Dr. Mischley's many years of work with Parkinson's patients.
Natural Therapies for Parkinson's Disease is an excellent guidebook and an educational reference text. This easy-to-read paperback belongs in the toolkit of anyone associated with this debilitating disease.
5-0 out of 5 stars Living Well With Parkinsons's Disease
I bought this book for my group - The Lakeway Area Parkinsons Support Group. I have several in our group already reading the book and passing it around. Doctors dont tell you about the disease and sometimes learning from those who have it and have experienced it is more informative. Sometimes science leaves you in the dark.
5-0 out of 5 stars Real PD information from Real PD people
I admit to being prejudiced - the authors are my daughter and son-in-law (43 and 47 years old) that are very active in the international advocacy and support for PD patients. Since I can't take the disease away from my children and I live 800 miles from them, I am "helping" by starting a PD support group in my community.The book is used as a study guide in our meetings. The group feels the personal touch the authors convey.It's like having a conversation with them.I must say I am in awe of the authors and all the research and personal experience they've brought to the book. You'll like it too.And remember, you may have Parkinson's Disease but PD does not have you.
4-0 out of 5 stars Relating to others
If you have parkinson's, as I do, or if someone in your life does, than this is a must read.It is full of information for the sufferer, but its most important contribution is in helping both victims of the decease and those who suffer nearby understand what is happening.It is wonderful to have people close to you read this book.It aides in how to continue life on this wonderful planet.I recommend it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Parkinson's Cliff Notes
Even though we are not finished reading this book, my husband (who has Parkinson's) and I are finally getting answers to all our questions.The authors write in an easy-to-understand format and do not hold anything back (unlike some doctors). This is an excellent resource for anyone who has been diagnosed with Parkinson's!!It's also a big help to the caregiver!! ... Read more
My mom has Parkinson's and this book gave us a lot of good information. We learned many things that will be helpful in helping with my mom's health. I highly recommend this book!
5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding PD--A Self-Help Guide--A review
A well-written, nicely organized basic introduction and self-help guide written from the perspective of a physician suffering from Parkinson's Disease (PD).This paperback manual explores both the physical and mental sides of dealing with a chronic, devastating illness.It provides strategies and tips for both the sufferer and the caregiver.My only reservation is that, at times, I wished the author would have provided more detailed information on specific, recommended techniques designed to aid the patient.Highly recommended reading.
4-0 out of 5 stars Light Informative Reading
"Understanding Parkinson's Disease" is a well-written book introducing a patient to life as a Parkinson's patient.I purchased this book to pre-screen it for my parents and found that it was a good book togive them because of it's positive discussion about the disease.If youknow a Parkinson's patient who refuses to read up about the disease(because they don't want to read about all the restrictions they will haveto face in their future) this is a good "first" book.The"Self Help Guide" has a pro-active upbeat approach to workingwith the disease.It doesn't spend a lot of time belaboring how miserablethe future will be, but focuses on how to deal with the present. SinceDr. Cram has Parkinson's Disease himself his viewpoints about the diseasehelp give credibility and enlightenment to the reader.This booksummarized all aspects of the disease while showing how to live with thesymptoms.It is a good starter book for preparing to live with Parkinson'sDisease. Purchase "Caring for the Parkinson patient" by Huttonfor a more in-depth review of Parkinson's and how to live (or care forsomeone) with the disease.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally...A plain speaking book about Parkinson's Disease
Dr. David Cram has written a very touching and informative book about Parkinson's Disease that I encourage anyone who has been diagnosed with PD or who knows someone who has been diagnosed with PD to check out. Dr. Cramwho was dianosed ten years ago with PD writes from personal knowledge andcovers everything from symptoms to the newest drug therapies. I alsoenjoyed the comments interspersed throughout the book from patients,physicians, nurses, counselors and therapists. This is a very encouragingbook and I recommend it highly! ... Read more
Roughly 1.9 million people are afflicted with Parkinson's disease and, according to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, that number is on the rise!
Parkinson's Disease Treatment Guide for Physicians will comprehensively cover Parkinson's disease (PD), including diagnosis, testing, prognosis, and possible causes. Its primary focus will be on treatment, specifying appropriate drugs, doses, and common side effects. It will address not only the treatment of motor problems (tremor, gait, etc.), but everything else that routinely arises in a PD practice, including osteoporosis prevention, blood pressure, sexual, bowel, or bladder dysfunction, dementia, depression, common skin rashes, and more.
This book will mirror Dr. Ahlskog's earlier book, The Parkinson's Treatment Book: Partnering with Your Doctor to Get the Most from Your Medications (2005). Each chapter in the current book will follow the same outline and cover nearly the same material as in each chapter of the earlier patient book, but it will be more succint and direct, with many teaching points summarized wtih bullet points or in small tables. There is nothing available quite like it that deals with PD so practically and comprehensively, yet does not overwhelm. Thus it is perfect for the patient as well as the busy clinician. As the daughter of an 83 yr old mother who is developing more and more PD symptoms, I found this to be an invaluable resource. I have looked at other newer resources and this is by far, the one I prefer due to the informationfound within and its readability.My mother is now reading it for thethird or fourth time, highlighting as she goes.It has helped both of usunderstand and deal more efficiently with the many symptoms, as theydevelop.
It does an excellent job of presenting the evolution of our limited understandingof the causes of the Parkinson's condition. Case studies are used to expandon this basic understanding by illustrating the utility of the insights indealing with the disease in actual patients.
If you are interested inunderstanding this disease, this little book is a great place to start. Itwill provide an excellent base to build on with more recent literature, aswell providing an understanding of how and why different treatments succeedor fail. ... Read more
I have Young Onset Parkinson Disease I bought the book "Whats shakin" and I was not disappointed! I would be reading the book get to laughing so hard that tears would roll down my face.I would highly recommend this book to anyone that can see the humor in lifes challenges.
5-0 out of 5 stars Insider's Look at the Author
(This review is more about the author.)
I am fortunate enough to call the author, John, my neighbor & friend -- he lives just two doors down from me.One of my first conversations with John was during the winter of 2005-06; I was shoveling my driveway, with my son (just a few months old, but bundled up) in a front carrier.John came rushing over with a shovel, and helped me finish clearing my driveway.He said, "I couldn't let a woman with a baby shovel by herself."He told me he had Parkinson's Disease, and I told him I was all-too familiar with the symptoms (someone close to me had the disease as well).
What a great first impression!Here's a guy who has every right to be unhappy with his situation, but he's one of the most positive people I now know.It's taken some time to get to know John: loves his cigars, has one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen (I told him he should write about that too), and helps his neighbors year round...and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Living in the same town means I get to read articles in the local newspaper written by John, and he's also shared some of his poetry with me.Everything he writes is inspirational.For this reason, John reminds me of a viking.He makes the best out of what he's dealt, he doesn't feel sorry for himself, and he loves a good laugh -- even if it's at himself.
If you know someone who is living with Parkinson's, or has recently been diagnosed --or even someone who would like to know what it's like living with the disease, then buy this book.Most people only think of the symptoms, and forget to consider how a person's life is affected.This book will give you a new perspective -- a postive one.
And...I don't think John would mind if I recommend Perelman's Pocket Cyclopedia of Cigars 2008 edition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Touching, Funny, and Inspirational
This book is an excellent read for anyone looking for perspective in life. It is written straight from the heart of a man who has looked adversity in the face and laughed. His anecdotes which were caused or contributed to by Parkinson's both amuse and encourage anyone, whether or not they have struggled with a debilitating disease. I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a quick read that will touch the heart and enlighten the mind
5-0 out of 5 stars I'm cured!
I have purchased numerous copies of "What's Shakin" and they keep disappearing.I loan them to family and friends and they loan them to others.These people are also buying copies of the book for family and friends.If this book was rated honestly it would receive more than five stars. I told John that if laughter is truly the best medicine I would be cured.I was laughing so hard at times, I could not open my eyes to read.
This man, his family, and the book are wonderful examples of courage.I can't wait until the second is published. I also have young onset parkinsons. ... Read more
    5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for PWP & families
    I am a PWP (5 years) and HIGHLY recommended this compassionately written and experience- based book.
    I often turn to it when things are going on with the PD that I don't understand or can't identify using accepted medical terminology. For example, I find myself simply not caring about things I can't change anymore, even though in the past I have been a wise crackin' firebrand.
    As Dr. Friedman points out, such "apathy" can be protective-- a brilliant insight on his part- protecting the PWP from possible depression related to the realization & constant reminders that PD gives us that we are not able to do things we used to love.
    What is the difference between psychologically useful, protective PD apathy and apathy that is not useful for a PWP? Read this book to find out!
    5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for Patients and Caregivers
    As I read this book, I felt that it was written from inside my experience as a person with Parkinson's disease. It provides insights for the patient in a style that a non-medical person can understand. It would be especially valuable for someone who knows a Parkinson's patient.
