Product Description
This beautiful book combines the talents of a husband-and-wife team, blendingwitty, readable verse with fluent narrative passages and exquisite pen-and-ink drawings to tellthe story of the author's struggles with two of the most prevalent diseases of our time,Parkinson's and skin cancer. From the original diagnosis of each ailment, the author recordedmany of the events and his reaction to them in scraps of verse which he has subsequentlyrounded out into a compelling narrative and commentary. The poems are easy to read andpreserve the stark reality of the situation while being generously laced with humor. The text isenlivened by a set of delightful drawings of flowers, each of which has some connection in folk-lore with the events described: these drawings are the work of the author's wife who also paintedthe frieze of irises which forms the basis for the tasteful and attractive cover. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry as unique as it is memorable.
In Life Lines, Anthony Edey draws upon his experiences with Parkinson's Disease and Cancer to craft a poetry which is both serious and hilarious at the same time. Enhanced with line drawn illustrations by Iris Edey and asection of black & white photographs, the poetry comprising thisslender volume is as unique as it is memorable. The Final Cure: I hear thatI ought to tart smoking,/Just try a medicinal pack./Inhale all the nicelevadopa/My little gray cells seem to lack.//I hear that the feeling-goodfactor/Is just what I'm missing of late./A packet of Gaulloise should fixit,/I'd happily asphyxiate.//It's really a strange contradiction/Thatsmoking could see this thing off./Instead of a long life of shaking/I'd dienice and slow of a cough!//On balance it seems quite apparent,/Thetreatment is worse than the cure./Through Parkinson's may not beperfect,/It's better than smoking, for sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for all
We think that the book is a real light that shines on the fundamental questions of life that many of us manage to ignore.

Life Lines, especially the poem about Sam, made us think again about what is importantin our own lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and uplifting
Life Lines was meant as a double-entendre by Edey -- "life lines" as throwing them out to save someone drowning in adversity, and lines by the words used by this man who charismatically wrote about hisexperiences in being treated for skin cancer and Parkinson's Disease. We've heard actor Michael J. Fox talk publicly about his life with PD, andlike Fox, Edey provides a service to those who read his words. In LifeLines, Edey takes a "that's life" attitude with his healthissues, and makes us chuckle in the face of reality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Personal revelations...
Edey captures his feelings and shares his personal revelations with wit and humility as he goes through his acceptance of the diseases that have attacked his body....the art work that accompanies each poem was lovinglybrought to life by his wife, a gifted artist. The book is a joy to readand upon which to reflect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Lines - healing & humorous!
Anthony Edey has written a wonderful book to be appreciated by all, but particularly by those facing serious illness. The book shares humor and sensitivity, and demonstrates how keeping a positive perspective hasallowed him to find hope for the future and cherish the simple blessings of everyday life. Parkinson's disease and cancer are tough challenges for anyone. The lessonAnthony teaches with this book is that they can readily be faced with thebest medicines:positive thoughts, the love and support of friends andfamily, a fighting attitude and humor.Bravo, and thank you, Anthony! ... Product Description
The author was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson's disease nine years ago at the age of 35. It was a shocking, emotional, and life-changing event. At first the author saw nothing but negatives with this diagnosis. As she made her way through a journey with this most unwelcome intrusion into her life, she found some positives. The author also found that as disturbing and unfair as her diagnosis felt it did not make her immune to the vagaries of life. This book was written to increase public awareness of Parkinson's disease and how the author came to realize one person can make a difference and when each person's efforts are put together with that of everyone else there is indeed strength in numbers. It is vital for everyone in our country to know there is an ethical, scientific, and moral framework in which Parkinson's disease and other devastating medical conditions can be cured. Misinformation about medical research is addressed in this book. And finally, this book is a thank you to many people who continue to give the author their love and support through her journey with Parkinson's disease and the vagaries of life. ... Product Description
Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are known to suffer from motor symptoms of the disease, but they also experience non-motor symptoms (NMS) that are often present before diagnosis or that inevitably emerge with disease progression. The motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease have been extensively researched, and effective clinical tools for their assessment and treatment have been developed and are readily available. In contrast, researchers have only recently begun to focus on the NMS of Parkinson's disease, which are poorly recognized and inadequately treated by clinicians.

The NMS of PD have a significant impact on patient quality of life and mortality and include neuropsychiatric, sleep-related, autonomic, gastrointestinal, and sensory symptoms. While some NMS can be improved with currently available treatments, others may be more refractory and will require research into novel (non-dopaminergic) drug therapies for the future.

Edited by members of the UK Parkinson's Disease Non-Motor Group (PD-NMG) and with contributions from international experts, this book summarizes the current understanding of NMS symptoms in Parkinson's disease and points the way towards future research. ... Read more

Recent advances in understanding the role of protein dysmetabolism in neurodegeneration was the theme of the Fondation IPSEN meeting addressing Genotype-Proteotype-Phenotype relationships. Experts from international laboratories contributed to the  current volume to produce a comprehensive overview of the role of protein misfolding in neurodegeneration. Links between genotype and protein characteristics and between proteotype and clinical phenomenology were discussed across diseases categories. Progress in understanding the role of abnormalities of protein metabolism may lead to the identification of biological markers relevant to disease monitoring and to the development of new therapeutic agents capable of modifying and ameliorating basic neurodegenerative mechanisms.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book.
Heroes are never made. Courage comes from fear of the unknown. We try to live life and make each day count. These are but a few of the clichés that I've heard when people talk about those who fight life threateningillnesses, yet this can not begin to describe this book.

Packed into this150 page book is more than the life story of someone who has been strickenwith an illness in the prime of life, it is an inspiration to everyone. Thedealing with Parkinson's is often hard and troubling and in this storyyou'll see what it takes to be strong in the face of this illness.

Thestory is happy, moving, sad, joyful and even angry at times and each of thefeelings and emotions gives you a sense of realism thought out the life ofSandi Gordon. Gordon shows you what courage and faith is all about.

Theemotion throughout the entire book is what kept me reading from cover tocover. The dealing that Gordon goes through despite the way the diseasetakes over impressed me. Congratulation on an excellent book BrandenPublishing! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
Steven A. Zecola has written a must read book that will open your eyes and hopefully instigate very important response. How many books have you read lately that can save lives? In my case, just one, and it is titled, "The Race to Cure Parkinson's Disease: How Science Will Defeat Evangelism." Let us all hope so.

This book is not just for those who are affected in some way by Parkinson's, but in truth it is for every American who cares if our government, our sciences, our economy, and our health is being directed by those who wish to control it all, control us all, through their narrow-minded evangelism. The book explains clearly what Parkinson's is, what it does, and the hopes and strides for a cure. It also describes the medical research that is underway, is possible but is being restricted, and the other avenues being taken. The book examines the evangelical onslaught against embryonic stem cell research, brings up the past and the way these same people protested against invitro fertilization - something that has become very mainstream, and most importantly, looks at the influence of evangelicals on our political society. Just who is running the government anyway? Who is controlling your mind?

So many strides towards cures have been made, but it is like the old adage of one step forward and two steps back. If the people who stand in the way would just step aside, we would be walking towards the cure of so many diseases in no time at all. Steven Zecola brings all of the pertinent information to his readers, from history to potential cures, research and studies to public opinion on evolution. Who is supposed to be in charge of what science can achieve? Why should one group of people with one group of beliefs be able to control what affects the world? It shouldn't.

The book is written in a straightforward, down to earth voice. This is not a scientific textbook; it is a manuscript about the truth of what is happening all around us. If you want to know the truth, use your voice as a world citizen, be informed, and read this book. I've never wanted to shake the hand of an author more in my life.

Product Description
Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder with the cardinal symptons of bradykinesia, rigidity and tremor, as well as a postural inability in the later stages of the disease. It has been estimated that over 1,000,000 people in the United States are affected by PD with approximately 50,000-60,000 new cases diagnosed each year. The average age of PD onset is 60 years, although persons can onset much later and approximately 4-10% onset prior to the age of 40. The primary neurochemical change in PD is a loss of dopamine in the substantia niger, although it is increasingly recognized that additional neurotransmitters and brain areas are involved. The cause of PD is unknown, and there is currently no cure available.

The treatment of PD can be challenging and treatment of early PD can be complex with choice of initial therapy, as well as timing the initiation of therapy. Although there are currently no treatments approved to stop or slow the progression of PD, this is an area of active research, as it is estimated that approximately 60-80% of dopamine neurons are lost by the time of diagnosis. There are several symptomatic treatments available for all stages of PD, including monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitors, dopamine agonists, levodopa, and less commonly, anticholinergics and amantadine. The treatment regimen in the early stage needs to be individualized based on the disease characteristics and life situation of each patient. The goal of therapy in early PD is to identify a treatment strategy to control the parkinsonian symptons, such as motor fluctuations and dyskinesia, without causing adverse events. ... Read more
