Product Description

The youngster who won’t talk to anyone. The child who avoids social and extracurricular activities. The teenager who has trouble performing before others.

Many children experience social anxiety in certain settings. Some, however, perhaps as many as 4%, experience a clinical condition of severe social and evaluative anxiety that profoundly affects many life situations. Christopher A. Kearney’s Social Anxiety and Social Phobia in Youth sorts out the many nuances of thought and behavior associated with this condition. In doing so, the author gives practitioners and researchers a thorough, up-to-date understanding of childhood social anxiety and social phobia with respect to their characteristics, assessment, and treatment.

- Introductory chapter covers related concepts such as shyness, introversion, and social withdrawal.

- Accessible coverage of epidemiology, biological, and environmental risk factors.

- Provides integrated etiological models and a proposed developmental pathway.

- Clarifies differences of normal childhood and adolescent concerns and their more pathological counterparts.

- Applied examples feature typical as well as unusual cases.

- Later chapters cover empirically-based assessment and treatment recommendations.

- Strategies for relapse prevention are provided.

Clinical and counseling psychologists, school and educational psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and pediatricians will appreciate Kearney’s clarity, organization, and depth of coverage. For principals, teachers, guidance counselors, and other school-based professionals, Social Anxiety and Social Phobia in Youth helps answer their question, "Why won’t this child participate?"

Product Description
James M. Glass provides a provocative new answer to the questions about the Holocaust that bedevil us to this day: How and why did so many ordinary Germans participate in the Final Solution? And how did they come to regard Jews as less than human and "deserving" of extermination?

In this path-breaking work of intellectual and cultural history, Glass argues that the answers lie in the rise of a particular ethos of public health and sanitation that emerged from the German medical establishment and filtered down to the common people. Building his argument on a trove of documentary evidence, including the records of the German medical community and of other professional groups, he traces the development in the years following WWI of theories of racial hygiene that singled out the Jews as an infectious disease, and that determined them as "life unworthy of life" in the works of Nazi propagandists and German scientists.

Looked at from a broader perspective, Glass writes, the actions and beliefs of the German people show that what today would be regarded as insane, became, for WWII German society, normal politics. Murdering millions of innocent people was not seen as a vicious criminal conspiracy but as a therapy essential to the culture's well-being. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Faint of Heart
While the subject mater is very disturbing, the writing stylings of Mr. Glass was even more so.To establish one's hypothesis in the begining is not uncommon, but to repeat it over and over distracts from the readingexperience.I agree with the Kirkus Review, that the non-specialist steerclear of this one. An examination of the Final Solution and the societythat enabled it's evolution is extreamly important at this time for tworeasons: a. over time our picture of the event fades, b. it is applicabletoday more than ever. This book is the reason I support our publiclibraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Life Unworthy of Life' is wonderful!
In his latest book, 'Life Unworthy of Life,' James M. Glass has artfully crafted a masterpiece in the fields of Holocaust literature and political psychology. He boldly challenges the reader to consider each idea hepresents and come to his/her own conclusion. What may be ultimatelydifficult for the reader is that there is truly only one conclusion to cometo: that the author is right. Many books written on the subject of theHolocaust present controversial theses as to the mindset, breadth ofrelevant knowledge of "what was really going on," andunique-monster attributes of every key (and not so key) individual involvedin the mass slaughter of six million Jews. It is extraordinarilydifficult to make palpable to a reader something so distasteful as thenotion that an entire society or "race" could knowingly, systematically and enthusiastically murder so many. What is even harder toswallow is that there were signs and evidence along the way that The FinalSolution would be the end result and yet, there was little to no massrepudiation within Weimar and Third Reich/Nazi society.James Glasshas constructed a convincing argument in 'Life Unworthy of Life' and thereader ultimately must confront something within himself/herself andgrapple with the notion that ordinary people will do and in fact HAVE DONEextraordinarily horrific things for irrational and illogical reasons. What's more, millions upon millions of people cooperated and agreed, volunteered and eagerly participated in the systematic dehumanization, destruction and mass murder of an entire people and culture. One lunatic iseasy to understand. Millions of "normal" people going along withpopular and ingrained sentiment which encourages and embraces hate andostracization (leading to death) is not so easy to understand. James Glassexplains it beautifully. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
The great thing about this book is that it isn't trying to promote any single approach to dealing with anxiety. The information is well presented, easy to understand, and is written with the understanding and compassion of one who's been there. It covers a multitude of techniques and is very helpful. I bought two copies, one to keep, and one to loan out to other people. I have a Master's degree in Counseling, and in my opinion, this book is one of the best on the topic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed
I was not impressed with this book.I have read better.Triumph Over Fear by Jerilyn Ross is a good one.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's fixable - just invest a little time!
I found this book really helpful and would have no hesitation in recommending it to anybody who is looking for drug-free way of overcoming panic and phobias. I read this book while attending a Counsellor at regular intervals. People tell their stories in the book - all of which are success stories. I found that I could really relate to some of the problems they had experienced. It made me feel that I wasn't so different after all and it really gave me great hope and encouragement. Well worth a read - it shall certainly lift your spirits!

5-0 out of 5 stars A warm, caring, and inspiring book
This is a lovely and inspiring book--it's not like any other book I've ever read on this subject. Mani Feniger is a therapist, but this is not a clinical take on phobias. She has also struggled with anxiety and fears, and she writes with a personal, caring voice. Her own story, and thestories shared by others, make you feel that it is really possible to getfree and move on with your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars This extraordinary book has changed my life.
This is a must read for anyone who has lived with panic/phobic disorders. My life was unmanageable until I gained the insight of the author who has had her own struggles with these disorders. Perhaps that is what makes thisbook so helpful. The examples of people living with these disorders werefamiliar and reassuring. This book has helped motivate me to keep workingon this stuff. I know now, I can do it! ... Read more

Product Description
The essays brought together in this book understand phobia not as a pathology, but as a versatile moral, political, and aesthetic resource – and one with a history. They demonstrate that enquiry into strong feelings of aversion has enabled writers and film-makers to say and show things they could not otherwise have said or shown; and in this way to get profoundly and provocatively to grips with the modern condition.

  • Makes extensive reference to original readings of a wide range of literary texts and films, from the 1850s to the present
  • Places a strong emphasis on the value phobia has held, in particular, for women activists, writers, and film-makers
  • Discusses a range of writers and film-makers from Dickens, Thackeray, and George Eliot through Hardy, Joyce, Ford and Woolf; from Jean Renoir through Hitchcock and Truffaut to Margarethe von Trotta and Pedro Almodóvar
  • Intervention in key debates in cultural theory and cultural history

4-0 out of 5 stars Lurid yet Classy
This is a collection of illustrations of various phobias, similar in theme but different in tone from something like "The Pop-Up Book of Phobias."The illustrations are gouache paintings done in shades of gray, and the presentation seems to be more serious and less tongue-in-cheek than the more recent offerings in this vein. The illustrations are a superb example of the art deco style: instead of gradient shading, Mr. Vassos applied flat fields of gray with crisp edges so that the images have a somewhat Cubist effect of an assembly of flat organic and geometric shapes ... however the art is definitely positioned more toward the representational end of the spectrum rather than the abstract. There's a certain emotional honesty in these images which suggests that the phobias are to be taken seriously and perhaps pitied rather than made into a joke (as in the Pop-Up version.)Each illustration is prefaced by a few paragraphs discussing the motives behind the phobia being depicted. These are heavily Freudian - everything is based on sex and sublimated sexual desire - and are badly outdated.Don't get this book for the text.Get it for the illustrations. They are superb.

Also of note:My congratulations to Dover Publications on the cover design.Dover is one of my favorite all-time publishing houses, but for decades they have had a bizarre anti-aesthetic trend on their covers.I used to be able to spot a Dover book from across the room ... this does not look like one.It may be a reproduction of Vassos' original cover design for the 1931 edition (not sure about that.)Anyway, it looks nice.I'm impressed. ... There is no sugar coating the truth in her words which makes the advice more real. Its not about easing the truth into our minds but instead giving it to us straight up! Many people, myself included have been in toxic relationships at one time or another.

What I think is great about this book as well is the fact that the author does bring it to a down to earth level by cutting to the core or root of the problem itself. And there is no discrimination here, she lets you know that both Men and Women face these scenarios day to day. I would advise all my friends to read this book because in reality we see these cases more too often in this world we are living in. I definitely give this 5 Stars!- JJRUBIO ... Read more
