Gayle read the name on the note: Rita Snider.Yeah, sure, I ll get right on it, she thought, dropping it into her purse. There it sat - for a year. One day, on impulse, Gayle fished out the note and called. As soon as she d said hello, Rita replied,Honey, I ve been waiting for your call. Product Description

“Samantha King explains how, beyond being an all-too-frequent and still-too-lethal disease for many women, breast cancer is a corporate dream come true.” —Herizons

“Fascinating. King’s deft and thoughtful interpretation of the pink ribbon phenomenon is an important wake-up call. Going against the grain, she takes a clear-eyed look at a trend that often seems to outshine the disease that put it on the map.” —Women’s Review of Books

“King’s criticisms of breast-cancer philanthropy provide a new means of looking at one of our culture’s most celebrated causes.  For anyone who has ever squirreled away yogurt lids for the cause, Pink Ribbons, Inc. is food for thought.” —Bitch

“A fascinating read for anyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer.” —Curve

“Breast cancer advocacy is being transformed from meaningful civic participation into purchasing products. To understand the personal, social, and political costs, read this book.” —Barbara Brenner, Executive Director of Breast Cancer Action

In Pink Ribbons, Inc., Samantha King traces how breast cancer has been transformed from a stigmatized disease and individual tragedy to a market-driven industry of survivorship. Here, for the first time, King questions the effectiveness and legitimacy of privately funded efforts to stop the epidemic among American women. Highly revelatory-at times shocking-Pink Ribbons, Inc. challenges the commercialization of the breast cancer movement.

Samantha King is associate professor of physical and health education and women’s studies at Queen’s University, in Kingston, Ontario

4-0 out of 5 stars good condition, what i expected
The book arrived in a timely manner in good condition, overall I was pleased with the product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Off on too many tangents
King's premise is good: Where is all the money going when we consumers virtuously buy a box of crackers of a carton of yogurt decorated with a pink ribbon? Having experienced breast cancer, I am sick and tired of seeing pink ribbons everywhere I look, and have become cynical about the plethora of alleged research that's being funded right and left. Like King, I doubt that a cure is possible--there are too many factors contributing to the disease and too many different bodies experiencing it. The best we can hope for is to mitigate the causes and find more effective treatment.

King rightly points out that hopping on the "cure breast cancer!" bandwagon is just another marketing tool for companies hoping to enhance their images in the public's eyes. For example, she exposes that one would need to eat three cartons of yogurt every day for four months in order for the little lids to amount to a trifling $36. Skip the calories and send your money to your nearest research facility: that's much more effective.

But King gets caught up in a scholarly wordiness that is hard to plow through. She also spends too much verbiage criticizing the big, bad businesses that are hiding behind the pink ribbons. She feels government should "mitigate the effects of capitalism" by offering universal health care and offering more assistance to "underserved" populations. The book turns into a treatise on social policy and this angle dilutes her message. And I wonder if King realizes that the money for social programs must come from somewhere. Shedoesn't seem to understand that businesses pay a lot of taxes and employ people, who in turn pay taxes too, and that government has no income except those taxes!

This book needed some serious editing and cutting to make it more accessible to the general reader. But then it would only have been an article.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent academic overview of current breast cancer funding
Pink Ribbons, Inc. is an excellent overview of breast cancer philanthrophy's relationship to breast cancer research politics. As an epidemiology graduate student, most of the people I know with criticisms of current breast cancer research agendas are medical researchers. This book gave me valuable insights into why we have such a difficult time obtaining grants to research the correlation between environmental toxins and breast cancer.

However, because it appears to be written for academics who specialize in breast cancer history, it glosses over the social and political context that these changes are occurring in. Anyone interested in this book should read Barron H. Lerner's The Breast Cancer Wars: Hope, Fear, and the Pursuit of a Cure in Twentieth-Century America or Robert Aronowitz's Unnatural History: Breast Cancer and American Society (Cambridge Studies in the History of Medicine) before reading this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Premise is good, writing not so much
The previous two reviews I don't think really touch upon the book itself, but are more of a personal opinion in regard to the "pink ribbon phenomenon" in general.

While I think the author of the book had some important things to say and did her research, the writing really leaves something to be desired. Many of the pages could have been omitted as King tends to refer back to previous chapters and outlines what is to come far too much.I really felt as if I was reading the same thing over and over just so that the author could fill a few more pages.

The message itself is a good one, but it could have been written in a much more reader-friendly manner.A 30-page introduction by the author and another 30 pages of notes at the end, let you know it is going to be a wordy one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Women's breast health is making a healthy profit
She seemed to be saying people stick pink ribbons on their products to be 'current', 'trendy' and ultimately to get consumers to purchase their product. And, this is true to some extent. Savvy marketers understand that these events translate into big bucks.

This is a far cry from the 1970's when it was still scandalous to talk about breast cancer in public. Traveling back in time, we would not find any ribbons anywhere. People apparently must have held to a policy that talking about breast cancer ultimately spread it.

However, because breast cancer does strike anybody anywhere, raising that public awareness has become an important public action. Where it differs from the AIDS awareness (which also became trendy) and why more conservative organizations feel free to join their feminist counterparts in this cause is because cancer is not a condition which is transmitted around through the public population through a transmission of bodily fluids.

So while I do think that those other people promoting pink ribbon-themed materials also want a cancer-free world, I doubt they precisely share the same politics of feminist health care activists. In the 1970's, these women envisioned low-cost, multicultural, and high-quality healthcare models which placed women themselves as equal partners in the decision-making process about their own bodies.

To some extent, the current pink ribbon market flooding could be a re-co modification of women by the status quo according to the author. Women's breast health is being reduced to a symbol as opposed to the more substantive and ultimately three-dimensional reality which would be required when dealing with a person attached to the breast.

But since cancer does not discriminate, splitting hairs over the source of political support and current marketing strategies seems like a ridiculous quibble. Let's instead close ranks and just work together to say that cancer is bad and should be eradicated, while working towards an agreeable compromise in strategy.

"Most illuminating is Julian Palacios' 'Lost in the Woods'.It deals with the realities of Barrett's mental state without ever letting this overshadow his work.A fine book that gets to grip with the mechanics of his songwriting, his pioneering guitar-playing and the wider cultural backdrop."
- Mark Paytress, Record Collector

"Julian Palacios tells this melancholy modern myth with vitality, compassion and extraordinary..detail. Palacios has talked to key figures in the British underground, and brings the psychedelic scene, from the UFO club to the 14 Hour Technicolor Dream at Ally Pally, to vivid life."
-The Daily Telegraph

"Barrett's story has never before been told in such visceral detail.A definitive work."

"A perfect Syd Barrett book...believable and full of insight."

"Certainly better written than the other Barrett bios, 'Lost in the Woods' is not only about Barrett but the era that he stood for."

4-0 out of 5 stars moonshine, washing line...
A thorough yet digestable bio of the late Syd Barrett.Captures the pre and post Floyd Syd.

Similar to Mike Watkinson's "Syd Barrett & the Dawn of Pink Floyd: Crazy Diamond", but with some more meat on the bones.Particularly interesting is an interview with Barrett's nephew, which sheds light on Syd's activity during his later years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Syd Barrett, RIP
Syd Barrett will be greatly missed. His whimsical songwriting style was unique and greatly influenced many famous musicians like David Bowie. This book is an essential purchase for those wishing to know about a genuis.

5-0 out of 5 stars AUN BRILLA EL DIAMANTE.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Shine on You Crazy Diamond
Mainstream rock knows Pink Floyd. The all too familiar grandoise 70's tours that gave thier audiences experiences of a lifetime. They recognize the string of lyrically and musically woven work that is considered some of the finest productions ever. This is the stuff which "legendary" is all about. The stuff of Meddle, Wish You were Here, Animals. The Wall. The sonic Dark Side of The Moon.
Beyond this, few rock novices know about the groups early history. This was a very different Pink Floyd. One that was controlled by Syd Barrett.
Roger "Syd" Barrett grew up like any normal post world war II english boy. Originally yearning to become a painter, an exposure to Elvis and Little Richard provoked him to take an interest in music as well. Being an art student in England within the early to mid sixties was an experience. Influences were abundant everywhere; American R&B and Jazz. The Blues. Also abundant was the uncontrolled avialability of pot. Syd, always wanting fresh, new experiences took thatin as well. Eventually his guitar playing bcame better than his artwork. He hooked up with the son of one of his teachers, Roger Waters. Together they formed bands and played small venues for a little more than a year and a half. Then came the infamous "First Trip" where Syd experiences LSD for the first time through magic mushrooms (this is forever immortalized on the celluoid "Syds First Trip", a sought after tape of himself being filmed by the student buddy showing Syd completely on his magic swirling ship.Syd liked this so much that he continued to use it on a regular basis, knowing that the more he could ingest, the more his development as an artist would blossom. He eventually got the acid in its most available form.Soon these Physedelic experiences reflected in his playing and concept. Lighting Display, which was almost unheard of for a pop act became a central focus for the band-now named The Pink Floyd by Syd-the philosphy being that what you cannot make in your playing you can make up for with a visual experience. It was this, and not the Floyds early music that made the band so sucessful in the early going.
Syd in those days ws considered a visionary. On LSD he...sure was.His musical ideas and concepts were fresh and uncharted-eventually his wirting skills developed as well as his bands presentation. The first sinle "Arnold Layne" made top 20 in England, but it was the second record, "See Emily Play" that established the Floyd as THE trip band. The formula was there; crazy lyrics, studio effects, unusual sounds and a tight arrangement-all completely orchestrated by Syd. Thier first album The Piper at The Gates Of Dawn (which includes uncanny songs such as "chapter 24", "Lucifer Sam", The Scarecrow, the phenomenal "Bike" and the extended space jam "Interstellar Overdrive") captured not only the essence of Syd Barretts Pink Floyd, but the London Underground as well. Soon it was Top of the Pops. Top 10 single and album. The Beatles visits, The UFO club. It was wall coming together rapidly for Syd.
Then came the fall.
Syd was still on a steady diet of LSD. His behavior was rapidly getting out of hand. The once focused and vibrant musician/songwriter was slowly but surely turning into an acid casualty. Acid didn't effect Syd's performance, it effected his actual functionality in life itself.
His mental state becoming more eratic, his behavior was even more intolerable. Add thhe responsibilities of writing music and touring,it became to obvious it was too much to bear (see aural evidence with the single "Apples and Oranges" and the still unreleased "Scream thy Last Scream" and visual evidence of the infamous American Bandstand appearance on thier first American tour)and became clear that he was basically incoherent-the proverbial "lights on but nobody home" scenario. Eventually the band discharged Syd altogether-replacing him with David Gilmour. It was Gilmours-not Syds-guitar style that became most identifiable with Pink Floyd.
Syd lived in a flat in London after this ouster and grew worse; outta touch with his music and the world. He managed to produc (with the help of the Floyd) two solo albums The Madcap Laughs and Barrett (both 1970). Though it was music, with some notable exceptions, they were clearly an unfocused and disjointed affairs. (highlights include "Terrapin","Octopus","Golden Hair", Gigolo Aunt" and one of syd's first written songs,"Effervescing Elephant").
His deterioration continued well into the mid-seventies. Chronically usntable and mentally challanged due to prolonged ingestion of drugs he wound up being institutionalized.Released later to the daily care of his family, he shacked up in his mothers basement where he lives comfortably and carefree to this day almost unrecognizable from his prime, but suffers from a diabetic condition.
One of the most brightest and gifted artists to come out of the rock era, Syd Barrett became one of the first burned-out rock stars, a physical toll being monumental, an emotional one being inmeasurable. Syd today eschews his past. Wordly known as the founder of Pink Floyd, he received entry to the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame(did not attend)and is held in reverence to numerous young musicians worldwide.
For one shining moment, albeit brief, Syd Barrett became the darling of The London Underground and one of England's brightest Pop stars before it all came crashing down. Syds story is nothing sort of tragic, a chronicled tale of drug abuse and the troughs of the Rock N Roll lifestyle. His price that he paid for entering that arena reserved for those of groundbreaking visionary status. The book documents this expertly, and doesn't leave too much detail out, in fact I feel there is too much detail. Syd will forever remain a footnote in the bands history. To this day Pink Floyd cannot denounce (or shake off) the influence and original vision he had for the band.
One might ask oneself, "What could have been"? ... Read more

Product Description
In this touching, frank and informative memoir, Nicki Boscia
Durlester intimately chronicles her transformational journey after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Her story begins with her mother, who was diagnosed with the disease in 1962: a time when breast cancer was only discussed behind closed doors, and long before women took an active role in their diagnosis and treatment.

Nicki provides unique insight into being part of a large Italian-
American family afflicted with the BRCA2 gene, and shares poignant stories about her mother and aunts who faced breast and ovarian cancer with extraordinary grace and courage.

Nicki writes candidly about her frustration in finding the right team of doctors as well as the highs and lows of her journey, sharing humor and heart along the way. She puts a human face on the statistics ranking breast cancer as the second leading cause of death of women in the United States.

This deeply moving story of legacy, loss and ultimately survival is told through the eyes of a daughter who shared an unbreakable bond with her mother. As she travels the scary, unpredictable road through her own diagnosis, treatment and recovery, Nicki discovers the most difficult challenge she faces becomes the most spiritually transcendent experience of her life. ... Is a must read for anyone facing the diagnosis of breast cancer. This memoir is written with grace and courage as Nicki finds herself in the confusing world of treatment options and doctor choices.Interwoven with all of this uncertainty, she must also come to terms with the death of her beloved mother, from the same disease, that occurred while she was in college. Through it all she finds strength from her strong and close Italian family, and from her husband and children. Nicki shows us all that it is possible to fight a potentially life-threatening diagnosis with humor and support.

5-0 out of 5 stars Over the Moon
What an inspirational journey Nicki Durlester has shared with us!With clarity, humor, grace, spirituality and class, Nicki has opened her heart and soul for the world to see the inner struggles, strengths and weaknesses we are all secretly coping with. Her writing style is open, frank, forthcoming, witty and riveting. All at once, I was propelled into a story that can be anyone's, yet was so deeply personal to the author.Tears of compassion, fear, and ultimately pride streamed down my cheeks coupled with out loud chuckles and laughs given the author's candid sense of humor.Could it really be that someone other than myself believed in "signs" and "angels"?Having a family history of Alzheimer's disease, colon cancer and breast cancer, I, like Ms. Durlester, realized that I have been living as though I am waiting for the "other shoe to drop".Not any more! This book and it's inspirational journey has made me open my eyes to the fact that I must seize the moment and continue to look forward instead of living in a constant state of paralyzing fear.It became clear that Nicki is an "angel" for having so poignantly shared her story so eloquently and insightfully with us.This is not only a book for those challenged by the cruelty of breast cancer, but for anyone too mired by thoughts of what might be, instead of what can be with the love of family, friends, strength of a spiritual belief; and, above all else, respect for oneself. This is a book of universal appeal that I will recommend, gift to others, re-read and continually learn from.Simply put, I was "over the moon" when I read "Beyond the Pink Moon".I will forever look up at the sky and think of Nicki Boscia Durlester and how her tale has enlightened us all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicki B. Durlester's book is an engaging and inspiring read!
I don't have much quiet reading time in my world right now and usually have to work on books little by little over a few weeks...but...as I opened the pages of "Beyond the Pink Moon" and my 5 year old son settled down for a nap on a long drive over Labor Day, I ventured into the pages and was able to experience Nicki Durlester's story in it's entirety. What an experience...for her, certainly first and foremost, but for me as well.I laughed, cried, was VERY touched by the kindnesses offered to her on her journey and her openness and gifted storytelling style!I highly recommend Beyond the Pink Moon to others and am thrilled to have purchased a few so I can share with friends!Kudos to Nicki Durlester for the courage it continually takes to survive her breast cancer legacy and for the courage to write and self-publish this work.I'm in awe.... ...
