5-0 out of 5 stars A metaphor for many things
Buildings cast literal shadows, creating real darkness that many people cannot bear. People cast figurative shadows, creating unreal expectations that many people cannot bear. One particular building and a certain Batman are casting huge shadows over Gotham City, especially to the discomfort of one Poison Ivy, who at the moment cannot bear either one. Ann Nocenti's cautionary and metaphorical tale about casting shadows explores the highs and lows of reaching for the stars, again both literally and figuratively, mostly through the eyes of our lovely yet lethal Ms. Ivy. The highs and lows are both exemplified by one particular skyscraper that is blocking the sun from entering Ivy's plant adorned cell at Arkham, while at the same time contrasted against Batman's tireless and noble yet arguably fruitless and detrimental mission in life. Poison Ivy's multi-faceted character with its' many different shades of gray, or in this case green, ideally suits this style of story, where things and people are not as simple and straightforward as they appear. Nocenti succeeds at producing a story that makes one ruminate afterwards, and kudos to her for accomplishing that rare and laudable feat. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge for nature lovers
Reviewed by Kim Peterson for Reader Views (1/06)

The Connolly couple's sensitivity to irritating plants like poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac has resulted in a concise book packed with useful information. This volume in the "10 things to know" series dispels the myths and provides the facts on this daunting power-packed trio.

Since the best tactic is prevention, the book provides description for identification as well as demographics of where each plant thrives. A color photo gallery provides visual confirmation in identifying these plants. The authors also enumerate the other ways people "catch" poison ivy like contact with exposed pets and contaminated clothing.

The Connolly's explain how the plant makes humans so uncomfortable, how the potent urushiol oil is spread, and how to gage the severity of the reaction and possible complications. Pictures highlight the blisters and linear pattern of the typical rash. The authors discuss tests and vaccines to combat sensitivity. Several tips cover how to cleanse exposed areas on humans and pets. They also explain the conventional, homeopathic and less traditional methods of treating the misery of a resulting rash.

A segment devoted to elimination of these plants on your own property also is beneficial. Important counsel, like never burning or mowing down poison ivy, warns the reader of the problems with inhaling the oil.

The Connolly's down-to-earth style and touches of humor shine through as they expound on important information and offer interesting tidbits of knowledge for nature lovers who want to avoid harmful encounters. Sensitive to these plants myself, I've already made a home for the book on one of my shelves.

Excerpt: August 13, 1952 Los Angeles"Hound Dog" is a twelve-bar blues written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and originally recorded by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton in 1952. Other early versions illustrate the differences among blues, country, and rock and roll in the mid 1950s. The 1956 remake by Elvis Presley is the best known version. This is the version that is #19 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. "Hound Dog" was also recorded by 5 country singers in 1953 alone, and over 26 times through 1964. From the 1970s onward, the song has appeared, or is heard, as a part of the soundtrack in numerous motion pictures, most notably in blockbusters such as American Graffiti, Grease, Forrest Gump, Lilo & Stitch, A Few Good Men (film) and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The blues singer Big Mama Thornton's biggest hit was Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's "Hound Dog", which she recorded in 1952. Thorntons "Hound Dog" was the first record Leiber and Stoller produced themselves. They took over the session because their work had sometimes been misrepresented, and on this one they knew how they wanted the drums to sound; Johnny Otis was suppose...http://booksllc.net/?id=785473 ... Product Description
This study covers the latent demand outlook for poison ivy and oak extracts and other allergenic extracts for human use excluding diagnostic allergens across the prefectures and cities of Japan. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it’s prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for poison ivy and oak extracts and other allergenic extracts for human use excluding diagnostic allergens. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. ... Read more

Chapters: Poison Ivy. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 399. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Toxicodendron radicans (Poison ivy; older synonyms Rhus toxicodendron, Rhus radicans) is a plant in the family Anacardiaceae. It is a woody vine that is well known for its ability to produce urushiol, a skin irritant that causes an itching rash for most people (technically known as urushiol-induced contact dermatitis), but it is not a true Ivy (Hedera). Poison ivy grows throughout much of North America, including the Canadian Maritime provinces, Quebec and Ontario, and all U.S. states east of the Rockies except North Dakota, as well as in the mountainous areas of Mexico up to around 1,500 m (4,900 ft) (see caquistle or caxuistlethe Nahuatl term), and is normally found in wooded areas, especially along edge areas. It also grows in exposed rocky areas and in open fields and disturbed areas. It also grows as a forest understory plant, although it is only somewhat shade tolerant. The plant is extremely common in suburban and exurban areas of New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and Southeastern United States. Similar species, Poison-Oak, and Toxicodendron rydbergii are found in western North America. Poison ivy rarely grows at altitudes above 1,500 m (4,900 ft), although the altitude limit varies in different locations. The plants can grow as a shrub up to about 1.2 metres (3.9 ft) tall, as a groundcover 1025 cm (3.99.8 in) high, or as a climbing vine on various supports. Older vines on substantial supports send out lateral branches that may at first be mistaken for tree limbs. It is not particularly sensitive to soil moisture, although it does not grow in desert or arid conditions. It grows in a wide variety of soil types, and soil pH from 6.0 (acidic) to 7.9 (moderately alkaline). It can grow in are...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=69229 ... Read more
