Product Description
First published in 1998, this is a study, based on DNA sequencing, that traces the porphyria stain through the genealogical maze of Europe's royal dynasties to the present day descendants of the Houses of Hanover and Windsor, and the consequences it might have had on the history of Europe and North America. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Most Informative Books About Porphyria
I have a loved one with porphyria. There is very little information out there about this rare disease. I found this book helpful in the understanding of how porphyria affects a person through the documentation of each of the members of this royal family symptoms. Toward the end of the book, there is an excellent explanation of the mechanisms of porphyria.

The book was well researched and written. It was fascinating to look into the private lives of royalty but sad to know that they suffered so much. A bittersweet book that I couldn't put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definite book on George III and porphyria
This book is a follow-up on Macalpine and Hunter's famous "George III and the Mad-Business". In the 70's their theory was not believed, because at that time most porphyria research had been done on the population of South Africa only.
With new insights, research and techniques, including DNA research, Röhl, Warren en Hunt present very convincing additions to the diagnosis of porphyria for George III and many of his family members and some descendants. ... Read more

The chief of his faults, a certain uncontrollable brutality of speech and gesture when he was strongly roused, was destined to cling to him all through his life, and to startle with the blaze of a volcano even the last quiet years before his death. But any one who wishes to understand how deep was the elemental honesty and reality of his character, how profoundly worthy he was of any love that was bestowed upon him, need only study one most striking and determining element in the question — Browning's simple, heartfelt, and unlimited admiration for other people. He was one of a generation of great men, of great men who had a certain peculiar type, certain peculiar merits and defects. Carlyle, Tennyson, Ruskin, Matthew Arnold, were alike in being children of a very strenuous and conscientious age, alike in possessing its earnestness and air of deciding great matters, alike also in showing a certain almost noble jealousy, a certain restlessness, a certain fear of other influences. Browning alone had no fear; he welcomed, evidently without the least affectation, all the influences of his day.; A very interesting letter of his remains in which he describeshis pleasure in a university dinner. " Praise," he says in effect, "was given very deservedly to Matthew Arnold and Swinburne, and to that pride of Oxford men, Clough." The really striking thing about these three names is the fact that they are united in Browning's praise in a way in which they are by no means united in each other's. Matthew Arnold, in one of his extant letters, calls Swinburne "a young pseudo- Shelley," who, according to Arnold, thinks he can make Greek plays good by ma... ... Read more

Product Description
An attempt is made in this volume to tell the story of Browning's life, including, as part of it, a notice of his books, which may be regarded as the chief of "his acts and all that he did." I have tried to keep my reader in constant contact with Browning's mind and art, and thus a sense of the growth and development of his genius ought to form itself before the close.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vampires of the Future
I was surprised when I started reading this book and found that it was set in the future.I really enjoyed the freshness of the story line. The characters were interesting and well developed.Over all, this was an enjoyable read.I hope there will be more books continuing with this story because I would love to read more about the Founders, Seniors and Juniors.I would recommend this book to my friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vampires, but not as you know them.
This is an ingenious twist on the classic vampire story. And given that the vampire story has been told so many times in so many ways, that's saying something. It's not aimed at teenagers, nor is it prurient, and will not insult your intelligence. It blends vampirism and science fiction into a suspenseful, sinister tale. The story moves at a good clip and makes a quick, fun read that leaves you wanting more. If you like stories about vampires, science fiction, miss your college days, or maybe even all three, you'll enjoy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars something different, something good
My brother purchased this book for me over the holidays. I read it and found it to be a light read and an enjoyable book. What I enjoyed most was how the author made vampires out to be everyday humans who are ostracized because of a genetic defect. Only the daring discover the secret of vampirism by drinking blood, which is something very taboo in our society. This portrayal of vampires as weak humans was a refreshing escape from the typical fantasy offered by everyday vampire books.

The story takes place in the future where, quite frequently, an ancient vampire remembers his past and continues to hold a crush for a woman he met many centuries earlier. At the same time, he has to deal with vampire society politics in the present because he is unhappy with how the younger leaders have ruined his legacy after his retirement.

Overall, I thought the book had a lot of refreshing ideas. The author gives a human face to the vampire. If you want to read something unique, then you should definitely consider this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still thinking about it
This one will suck you in! Fast-paced with an engrossing story. Would be a terrific commute read.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Twist to Old Theme
With Vampires being very popular at the moment with the True Blood Series, Twilight, and so many other series; this book was refreshing with no teenagers in love tale and a new twist to the vampire tale. It's all about the science in this fast pace enjoyable book.I highly recommend picking up and giving it a chance, especially with all the love lorn vampire tales. ...
