Not for the faint of heart
Not far into this book I had to chuckle at the irony of its title claiming to be a "stress-free" guide. I found this book to be very stress-inducing, actually!I should disclose that this is my first pregnancy and I am by nature a worry wart and somewhat anxious person.I mistakenly feel (like many anxious people) that if I know all the details and horrible ways something can go awry, that I'll be more prepared for the worst and fare better.That's often rarely the case.I began reading this early in my first trimester, immediately shelved it and didn't pick it up again to finish until this week (the beginning of my third).

The pros:

1) It's laid out by trimester, like most pregnancy books, which makes it easy to navigate.

2)It covers in greater detail what's actually normal for a pregnant woman to experience.(The book's technical aspect is also a con, however; see below) There are embarrassing things listed in this book that I personally experienced that were never mentioned or validated for me in any other, and I've read more than my fair share.

3)The author gives personal stories (her own as well as her patients' stories of many years practicing) that somehow comforted me and sort of made you feel that you weren't somehow abnormal in your fears/symptoms/concerns.

The cons:

1)This book is EXTREMELY technical!!At times I truly felt like a med student reading the book that was going to tell me how to deliver a baby myself.When this technical fashion is applied to the things listed under "Normal", it's interesting reading.When you get to the "Abnormal" section the technical aspect of the book becomes downright frightening and you'll wish you hadn't even started reading it.Of course, you cannot put it down then so you just keep reading and by the end of the "Abnormal" section, your jaw has hit the floor.Additionally, all the medical jargon and detailed technical information just becomes boring and dull.

2)There is way too much detail about delivery in this book.I agree that we women (and men) should be prepared heavily for what labor is like so that we are not so shell shocked and possibly handle the event better.That topic should (and is in this book) covered thoroughly.But the actual material on delivery is so unbelievably technical and ranges from normal to insanely rare examples.I just don't think it's necessary or even smart to pepper a pregnant woman's mind with this kind of information.Especially since during delivery, she won't be handling this, the doctor will!And she won't be able to do anything about it anyway!

I've read several books about pregnancy. "The Joy of Pregnancy" is probably not detailed enough and basically gives no more information than what you could find on any regular pregnancy website for free.This book is entirely too descriptive and technical.A good in-between book is the old fall back, "What to Expect When You're Expecting."It covers common problems and issues in a way that is far less anxiety-provoking and much less like a textbook.

Possibly the last book you should read
I have worked with birthing women and families for 25 years.I am lucky enough to have a library that purchases many new books about pregnancy and childbirth-the good ones I buy for myself on Amazon.This is the first time I have ever returned a book to the library and asked them to remove it from their shelves.
While I disagree with the authors' very medical perspective, there is a great deal of very dated and dangerously incorrect data in this book.This is not an opinion, it is a fact.
There is an overview of each trimester spelled out in black and white sections entitled "Normal" and Abnormal."Only very specific pathology can be deliniated this simplistically.
The final chapter gives one of the author's birth story from 1976.I love and trust birth stories.They are all true in the mother's experience, but shortly after delivery, a nurse looks in on mother and baby and asks "how did it go?"The author's answer? "Adopt."
Ladies-this book is a birth perspective you don't (!) need.
I do wish you a strong and positive birth experience.

gread book, very informative
Unlike the previous reviewer, I loved this book. I read it to prepare for my first birth, and I was scared, very scared, before I opened the book. The book was very informative, I found it reassuring. I had a vaginal birth (definitely no preaching towards having a cesarean), and felt the book adequately prepared me to have realistic expectations of the birth process. I believe my birth and pregnancy experience went as described for average in the book, so the author knew what she was talking about. Bought two more copies for my pregnant friends, so they have a good guide to go by. I have no idea why the other person didn't like the book; I loved it and strongly recommend it, especially for first-time moms.

does this OB know what normal birth is?
I found this author very negative with regards to anything in pregnancy or childbirth which was not part of her totally medical and controlled experiences. If you want to be part of the increasing CS statistics in the USA then read this book. Otherwise educate yourself and find an OB or midwife who is educated to provide safe prenatal care while working with your hopes and wishes for the birth of your child. ... Read more

Very Helpful
This book is well written and full of useful information and steps you can take.I recommend it for any women who is trying to understand miscarriage.

Fighting fear with knowledge
After recent miscarriage this book brought me many much needed answers. I would recommend it to any woman who had miscarriage or afraid she may have one. It allowed me to ask my doctor better questions during follow up appointments and prepare for future pregnancies. I only wish I read it earlier, before miscarriage.

easy to understand
I finally got to make some sense of what all the tests my doctors have done for me.
The author did an excellent job of putting all the info together. It's quite obvious the book is a labor of love, Susan genuinely desires to help others. It's so refreshing to read something that's not a marketing vehicle for a physcian's own medical career.

Great book
To those who have had no idea about miscarriage until it happened to you- this is a wonderful book.It explains the main reason why women miscarry so you can see why it might have happened to you.Treatments are explained, and self-assessments assist you along the way. I highly recommend this book to anybody looking for answers during a very challenging time.

Important information
This book has been helped me to find some answers and helped to prepare me to talk more with my Doctor about things we should do before and during our next pregnancy.After my miscarriage the hospital tested the placenta and umbilical cord and found no abnormalities, which was really upsetting.I was 14 weeks and had seen the baby's heartbeat twice before we found out that he had died.I was left with absolutely no answers and no reason as to what may have happened.

Obesity is now the most common risk factor in pregnancy. Of all pregnant women 10 - 20per cent are obese and 1 per cent are morbidly obese. Both primiparous and multiparous women are increasingly affected by obesity: primiparae because of the rising prevalence of juvenile obesity, multiparae because of inadequate postnatal weight reduction. Pre-conception advice and interventions to minimise maternal and foetal complications of obesity in pregnancy are of vital importance but until now are often sadly inadequate. lots of information without bias
This book will make your anatomy and your treatment options clear to you, and provide a great foundation to talk with your doctor about anal or urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, or other problems.It gives you advice about how to even FIND a doctor.The author seems to love his work, which makes incontinence seem like just another treatable problem rather than a reason for embarassment and shame.

The author is aware of the politics and passion regarding vaginal vs. caesarean births, and addresses the topic in an even-handed way. He outlines childbirth practices to avoid because they can be harmful to your pelvic floor (such as routine epsiotomies) and wisely includes a section on "preventive obstetrics," (a fascinating way to think of it).He also discusses the controversial issue of offering elective C sections in a fairly even-handed way.I am a big believer in vaginal childbirth and wanted to peg the author into one camp or another, but found it hard to decide which camp he would fall into.His ability to see and discuss both sides fairly is an asset in what can be a highly charged debate.

My only criticism is that he often seems to cop out on various issues by saying "more research is needed." It's probably an accurate thing to say, but I and everyone else probably likedefinitive answers.

I wish I'd read this book before my first baby was born.While big drug companies have kept the world informed about men'shealth issues, nobody seems to mention the common problems caused to women during childbirth - and what to do about them.This book not only gives factual information about female anatomy and how it works, but a detailed discussion of what can go wrong, and how to prevent or fix problems. Much more detailed than a 10 minute appointment with an overbooked OBGYN, and lots of research to provoke important questions when you can see your doctor. Very reassuring for women with many levels of complications.
