Editorial Review Product Description According to the American Cancer Society, one man in six will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime, the second leading cause of cancer death in men. A Gay Man’s Guide to Prostate Cancer explores the medical facts as well as the personal experiences of medical and mental health professionals and gay men from different walks of life. This insightful examination from the perspective of being gay in a predominantly heterosexual medical world emphasizes the unique concerns gay men have when confronted with this life-altering disease. The status quo of the medical world is heterosexually assumptive. A Gay Man’s Guide to Prostate Cancer shifts the perspective to gay men’s needs, challenges, and experiences when faced with this critical health risk. The book is divided into a professional section that covers the medical and psychological aspects affecting gay men, and an experiential section in which gay men of varying ages, ethnicities, races, and HIV status describe their own very personal feelings and experiences regarding their diagnosis, treatment, and side-effects. A helpful glossary provided for the layperson explains the meanings of medical words and phrases. A Gay Man’s Guide to Prostate Cancer discusses: the basics of prostate cancer—with an overview of causes, diagnosis, screening guidelines, and treatments the history of prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment—and some unique concerns that gay men face when consulting a urologist and making treatment decisions the practical questions regarding gay sex after treatment—with a matter-of-fact primer pertaining to what may happen during and what to do after treatment the depression and anxiety that gay men will likely experience—with a look at the stigmatization and alienation that may occur in the heterosexually biased world the dynamics and concerns of diagnosed gay men within the context of a self-help group—with topics that include gay identities, sexual behaviors and attitudes, feelings of helplessness, and HIV/AIDS considerations how the surgical removal of one patient’s prostate gland affected him emotionally—and physically how a patient’s diagnosis challenged his sexuality—and moved him to work at alerting other men of color to their increased risk of developing prostate cancer a patient’s sexual dysfunction following radical surgery—and why he formed a gay men’s prostate cancer support group how prostate cancer devastated one patient’s sense of self and body image; and his experience of being unacceptable in a gay community that he views as consumed with youth and beauty older gay men’s thoughts when confronting prostate cancer—and how sex has evolved for them the impact of cancer on couples’ relationships—and the importance of being proactive about treatment a 33-year-old man’s struggle with prostate cancer—how it changed him and how it affected his relationship of 12 years A Gay Man’s Guide to Prostate Cancer fills the gap in the literature about gay men challenged with prostate cancer, making it vital reading for physicians, psychotherapists, gay men faced with positive diagnosis, and of course, friends and loved ones. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will go to MaleCare, Inc., a nonprofit organization that specifically serves men with various forms of cancer and organizes self-help groups specifically targeted to gay men with prostate cancer. Great Ideas
Why I decided against this book {The cover of the book has a picture of tomatoes.I believe Lycopene to be over-hyped at present, since there are no studies that show supplementation lowering PSA levels.} Mr. Guler's comments worried me.The meat issue is really a fat issue (I wonder if the surge in Atkins adherents will lead to a surge in prostate cancer). The fat issue, as I understand it, is (a) the quantity of fat and (b) an imbalance between omega-3 & omega-6 fats. Im told that grass-fed beef is lower in fat & has a one-to-one ratio, whereas corn-fattened beef has very little omega-3.So beef isn't entirely out of the question. Fish can be a problem.Farmed salmon is high in fat, but because of the feed, it contains little or no omega-3. My new diet has more fish (not farmed) than meat.Complex carbs.Vegetables such as broccoli & peppers, but not potatoes. No dessert. No dairy.Zone diet portions.Any general purpose cookbook will provide sufficient recipes.
What is left out.

Editorial Review Product Description John Hallenborg did get tested for prostate cancer and is fully recovered today, thanks to "the healing processes of time, a great doctor, and loving family and friends." Life, Sex, and Prostate Cancer Surgery: How One Man Healed and Was Made Whole is his story. Hallenborg at last found a way to both medical and emotional well-being. With sardonic humor and psychological acuity, he tells of his experiences and feelings while dealing with "the big C"— the physical toll of the treatment, the fears of its effect on his sex life, and the other diseases that intruded along the way. Life, Sex, and Prostate Cancer Surgery is often graphic, always unflinching, sometimes hilarious, and ultimately uplifting. For anyone facing prostate cancer themselves or involved in the life of someone who is, it offers helpful information and hard-earned reasons for hope. Customer Reviews (2)

With a dash of humor Although Mr. Hitchcox is a firm advocateof including the companion in the process, I was pleasantly surprised tofind "The Wife Gets to Speak" at the close of the book where hisspouse gives her perspective on the ordeal. More first-person books shouldtake this route because this disease affects more than the man. The bookis short, laced with cartoons and a fast-read but perhaps exactly what mostnewly diagnosed men need. At that early stage, one doesn't have muchattention span. There's also good resources, a list of questions for yourdoctor and a good, workable index. And don't let the year of publication(1997) stop you from getting it. He gives an attitude that will be neededas long as there is treatment for this disease. I enjoyed the book wellenough to wonder why it isn't listed at more Web sites. It will be at minewith a recommendation to get it - as I did - from Amazon.com. RobertYoung robert@phoenix5.org ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description In his latest book, Frank Murray, the reliably informative author of numerous books on health and nutrition, delves into the prostate and its potential for problems. Although prostate cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, there is an admitted lack of clinical data available on the topic. Despite this slight drawback, however, Murray has managed to unearth valuable research material on every conceivable aspect of the prostate. This venerable author has once again accomplished what he does so well, which is to meticulously research and string together clinical studies that give scientific underpinning to he methods and treatments he espouses and put them into relevant categories in a cogent, easily accessible narrative for the reader. How to Prevent Prostate Problems defines exactly what the prostate is and how it is vulnerable to such diseases as benign prostatic hyperplasia, cancer, and prostatitis, and then talks about how to prevent, or, if thatÂ’s not an option, correctly diagnose and discuss what treatments there are. As there are no magic bullets, this can be tricky, so both you and your doctor need to thoroughly understand the choices for treating these maladies. To illustrate some of the methods available, Murray has included case histories of men whose various prostate conditions have been successfully treated in different ways. Vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other supplements to help counter prostate irregularities are each given a comprehensive section, as are environmental hazards. The specter of vasectomies possibly causing prostate cancer is also discussed, and a number of trials show no obvious correlation between the two, but, to date, there are no definitive results. The back of the book contains an excellent Glossary of terms used in the book, a list of helpful Resources, a chapter-by-chapter listing of the references cited, and an Index. More that a resource, How to Prevent Prostate Problems comes close to being a source for anyone wanting to learn about the subject for themselves or their loved ones. |
