Your author decided to write this book about Prostate Cancer when one of his best friends suffered from this disease. He took extensive chemotherapy which extended his life, but made living difficult. His body was saying make me live longer, but his mind was saying I should die, living is too painful to continue. His mind finally won-out and he died. This book used Internet to learn about the symptoms of Prostate Cancer and the latest therapies used to extend the life span of people suffering from this cancer. One promising technology is the use of Nanocells which are injected in the patient's blood stream. These nanocells seek out the cancer cells and destroy them, thus curing the patient.I learned studying Nanotechnology research for another book that people investigating the applications of Nanocells had injected such synthesized cells into mice and the cells had sought out the cancer cells and destroyed them, thus curing the mice.If Bioscience researchers can do the same thing for humans, then there is hope for eradicating Prostate Cancer. ... Product Description
Progress in sequencing and characterizing the human genome has transformed cancer genetics both conceptually and methodologically. In Prostate Cancer: Biology, Genetic, and the New Therapeutics, Second Edition, leading cancer biologists and clinical researchers comprehensively review the latest basic research and its translational significance for the molecular biology and genetics of prostate cancer, as well as its application in developing novel therapeutics. Highlights of recent molecular genetics research include new light on inactivated tumor suppressor genes, HPC families, the role of the androgen receptor, the progression of prostate cancer and promising results from transcriptome profiling and proteomics. Research into the basic biology and regulatory mechanisms controlling prostate cancer growth, progression and stromal-epithelial interaction has revealed many possibilities for therapeutic intervention, including cell adhesion molecules, the androgen receptor, use of the nuclear matrix, Caveolin-1, and the prostate-specific membrane antigen. Among the cancer therapeutic modalities discussed are chemoprevention, radiotherapy, radical retropubic prostatectomy, the development of dendritic-cell based vaccines, differntiation therapies, and gene therapy. ... I had an excellent Urologist. He prepared me well for the surgery and afterwards, but as I was in the middle of recovery a number of other questions arose.Rather than call the office every day with the next question, I ordered this book and read it. I had a lot of time during recovery to think about a number of things. If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, you are frightened and depressed. What mostly frightened me was the unknown. I had no understanding of the disease, and worse, I did not understand my options. The appropriatetreatment option is extremely patient specific. Some MD's push their favorate protocol. So, what should one do? EDUCATE YOUSELF! Talk to several MD's and start researching (read). Once you select the best option, most of the fear goes away. This book focuses on the problem. Product Description
With the era of molecularly targeted therapy clearly established, prostate cancer is currently emerging as a forefront of discovery and implementation of personalized medicine strategies designed to individually select the best available treatment for each patient. This is the first book of its kind to focus on the molecular aspects of prostate cancer and how genetics, genomics and proteomics interact in the predisposition, development, progression and response to therapy of the disease. While serving as a concise reference text on the basic science and molecular biology of prostate cancer, Molecular Oncology of Prostate Cancer was written specifically for practicing urologists, medical and radiation oncologists, allied health pathologists, radiologists, and nurse oncologists who participate in the care of prostate cancer patients.Molecular Oncology of Prostate Cancer emphasizes the genes, proteins and biologic pathways that are being evaluated today and will be tested in the future to derive the molecular signature of each newly diagnosed prostate cancer. This single volume offers readers relevant, up-to-date information on how these molecular-based tests are being used to discover the predisposition for developing the disease, how to detect it at the earliest stage possible, how to classify it based on its genetic fingerprint, and how to predict its therapy-specific outcome. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Biased book
The American Cancer Society's own cookbook actually includes recipes for CHAR-BROILED BEEF! They never warn us about the cancer-causing dangers of charbroiling meat.

I would never trust anything the American Cancer Society says. They are very biased in favor of expensive pharmaceuticals with cancer-causing side-effects. They are the wealthiest "charity" in America, with cash reserves of $1 Billion.

The Role of the ACS in the War Against Cancer

The verdict is unassailable. The American Cancer Society bears a major responsibility for losing the winnable war against cancer.
The launching of the 1971 War Against Cancer provided the ACS with a well-exploited opportunity to pursue it own myopic and self-interested agenda. Its strategies remain based on two lies -- that there has been dramatic progress in the treatment and cure of cancer, and that any increase in the incidence and mortality of cancer is due to aging of the population and smoking while denying any significant role for involuntary exposures to industrial carcinogens in air, water, consumer products and the workplace.

Most of the funds raised by ACS go to pay overhead, salaries, fringe benefits, and travel expenses of its national executives in Atlanta. They also go to pay Chief Executive Officers, who earn six-figure salaries in several states, and the hundreds of other employees who work out of some 3,000 regional offices nationwide. The typical ACS affiliate, which helps raise the money for the national office, spends more than 52 percent of its budget on salaries, pensions, fringe benefits, and overhead for its own employees.

Salaries and overhead for most ACS affiliates also exceeded 50 percent, although most direct community services are handled by unpaid volunteers. DiLorenzo summed up his findings by emphasizing the hoarding of funds by the ACS.

"Most contributors believe their donations are being used to fight cancer, not to accumulate financial reserves. More progress in the war against cancer would be made if they would divest some of their real estate holdings and use the proceeds -- as well as a portion of their cash reserves -- to provide more cancer services."

Aside from high salaries and overhead, most of what is left of the ACS budget goes to basic research and research into profitable, patented cancer drugs.

The current budget of the ACS is $380 million and its cash reserves approach one billion dollars. Yet its aggressive fund-raising campaign continues to plead poverty, and lament the lack of available money for cancer research, while ignoring efforts to prevent cancer by phasing out avoidable exposures to environmental and occupational carcinogens.

Meanwhile, the ACS is silent about its intricate relationships with the wealthy cancer drug industry and chemical industries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Up-to-date and personal
I bought the first edition of this book when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and was struggling to decide between surgery and radiation therapies. I learned two important facts: 1. the decision as to whichcourse of treatment to choose is not just medical; it's personal; and 2. somuch is being done in this field that what any book says can be outdatedquickly.

This book succeeded on both counts. Its quotations from peoplewho had chosen alternative forms of therapy as to why they made the choicesthey did helped tremendously in making my own decision. And the currency ofthe information was better than any other book I consulted. This new, revised edition should take advantage of the research that has beenpublished in the past year. The book deals with much more than treatmentoptions as well, and should prove helpful to patients at various stages oftherapy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book With Unique Insights
Although I am empathic to the first reviewer, I'm not quite sure how he arrived at his conclusions. Dr. Bard seems tireless in seeking to help men with this disease. And, I assume he promotes his model of the Voluson ultrasound because its one of the the best for diagnosis and there are only a few in the US.

The large majority of men have little idea what to do with an abnormal PSA reading and end up tossed into the system with an often unnecessary biopsy, not to mention radiation and chemotherapy. Hence the material in this book is hardly 'old news' for most men. But it is important news.

This is a valuable book for men concerned about prostate diagnosis problems. Bottom line: 1) many to most men can avoid a potentially risky and painful biopsy (or multiple biopsies); 2) secure better information, both qualitatively and quantitatively and 3) do so safely and pain-free by using specialized ultrasound diagnostics. In this case with the European designed Voluson ultrahigh resolution multi-planar automatic acquisition 3-D power Doppler system (and when necessary, the proper MRI.)

My personal research, supported by studies, indicates the PSA, although a relevant marker for treatment, is largely unreliable for prostate cancer diagnosis. (E.g., Gina Kolata, "Prostate Test Found to Save Few Lives," The New York Times, March 19, 2009; for initial diagnosis by blood sample, the upcoming EPCA-2 test looks more promising.) Further, standard biopsies are often insufficiently reliable for discovery and grading of tumors -- i.e., a biopsy can have a significant failure rate in detection of prostate cancer and interpretation of the results.

Worse, there is the potential that biopsies or surgery may, to an unknown degree, spread a cancer.(E.g., Ralph Moss, "Are Needle Biopsies Safe?,"; http://www.cancerdecisions.com/020605.html.)

In sum, the efficacy of current diagnosis and treatment methods does not appear to be established. The value of a treatment is found almost entirely in the overall survival rate -- how much longer one actually lives in years. Unfortunately, current treatments for prostate cancer (as in the war on cancer generally) largely seem to have failed the test. This is why those with prostate cancer need better alternatives.

Yes, the bad news is that prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death among men. However the good news is that most prostate cancer (as much as 90%) is low grade, slow growing, and that most men will die of something else before they die of prostate cancer. The caveat is that men need to know what they have or don't have, because a deadly from can kill relatively quickly, in 5 years or less. "With both cancers [breast & prostate], researchers say they badly need a way to distinguish tumors that would be deadly without treatment from those that would not."(Gina Kolata, "Prostate Test Found to Save Few Lives," The New York Times, March 19, 2009; http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/19/health/19cancer.html?_r=1)

This is precisely what Dr. Bard's ultrasound technology is calibrated to determine. And whether aggressive or low grade, again, either tumor can be missed by a biopsy. (Statistically, Dr. Bard's scan is considerably better than a biopsy, without the risk.)Dr. Bard seems to be one of the few MDs in the US with the necessary equipment and experience to properly evaluate these detailed scans. (His bio is at ww.cancerscan.com.)

A trip to New York City may be required, but what one gets is information with the highest accuracy so that the best decision can be made as to treatment options. New, safer and more effective treatments than those commonly relied upon today are cited; but all major options are covered, including assessing treatment efficacy more accurately with the same ultrasound methods.

Dr. Bard's program can help men know what they have, secure the best treatment if a treatment is needed, discover and stop micrometastes, avoid capsule penetration by a tumor and, should they arise, detect sudden interval tumors before they become a problem.

This is clearly a book to have on the subject, because it could save many men unnecessary worry, plus avoid the unnecessary side-effects of conventional treatment, such as incontinence and impotence. It could also save many lives. Well worth the purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars Self-Promoting Book about Ultrasound Imaging
I have prostate cancer. My wife and I have been working diligently to learn the latest thinking about the disease. We purchased this book because of the title "New Life Saving Treaments" "Prostate Cancer Demystified", the fact that a MD was the author, and that it was of recent vintage. After reading it cover to cover we were both was very disappointed. It read to us as a self-serving book about the author and his ideas regarding 3D ultrasonic imaging of the prostate. It glossed very quickly over the basics of prostate cancer (there wasn't even a simple anatomical sketch of what or where a prostate is).Nothing was 'demystified' nearly as well as other books on this topic have been. In short, the takeaway is 1)PSA and DRE tests alone have false positives and negatives regarding cancer (old news); 2)As a consequence some biopsies are done and radical treatments performed when waiting might be better (old news); 3)Conversely, these tests might not flag aggressive cancers; 4)one tool to think of (before or instead of a biopsy) may be to use 3D ultrasound. The title of the book should match the internal material.Call it "3D Ultrasonic Prostate Imaging Demystified." ... Closer collaboration should expedite advances in treating disease. This important book, with a foreword by Fritz H Schröder, is designed to enhance the relationship between the two communities. It contains data from a multinational authorship, the forty chapters being written by experts with widely differing training and expectations. Their aim is to facilitate both understanding and in-depth knowledge of their subject. 5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable information!
A book about the prostate is worth zilch unless it minces no words. The author of this one is totally honest. That is what makes this one indispensable if you, like me and other millions, have prostate concerns. My problem is not (yet) serious or urgent but I find the book highly revealing and very helpful. And I now know if that is the case at this time, then if and when my Gleason Scale number goes up (see the book!) and I face surgery, the book will be a necessity to keep at my side. It sure does not read like a novel but it is Information with a capital I. The three key words in describing what Newt Malerman has written, are candid, informative, and helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars something is wrong somewhere
I have just read 'The Best Options for Diagnosing and Treating Prostate Cancer' published by Health Education Literary Publisher, on which I could not find any information, but their ISBN suggests that they are a very tinypublisher - maybe self published?).

It is an extraordinary biased bookgiving the 'best' methods for possibly preventing, monitoring, staging, conducting a biopsy, treatment etc. It assumes the reader has already readand is aware of the basics of prostate cancer and, therefore, does notcover the material that is provided by most other books - it is the nextstage on (which is good). The author (James Lewis - a non-doctor survivor)really puts himself on the line and open to challenge. Nevertheless it'sthe most helpful book I have read to date. It doesn't give wide ranges ofpercentages - it's specific, it doesn't pussyfoot about. For me, it isgreat book as it unashamedly gives his 'gold standard' for any treatment. It also has the most comprehensive bibliography (30 pages and about 250references) so it appears to be exceptionally well researched.

It ishighly evangelistic in its selling of Dr. Frank Ritz' prostRcisiontreatment at the Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia, claiming that cancer freesurvival rates are at least equal to and probably much better than surgery, even that performed by Dr. Walsh's Johns Hopkins team - and with the addedbenefits of significantly less chance of erectile dysfunction and otherside effects.

If what he says is anywhere near the truth there doesn'tseem to be any other choice but to have prostRcision.

I find itdisturbing that other books only seem to mention prostRcision as an aside. The books published by the American Cancer Society and the Mayo Clinicdon't even make a single reference to prostRcision. So something is wrongsomewhere!

Have you read it? If not, at this stage of my limitedknowledge, I would highly recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description
Journey toward Wholeness is the story of Stegall's experience with prostate cancer. Stegall brings his gifts as a storyteller and his perspective as a person of faith to a work that informs and helps enable cancer-sufferers (especially men) and their families to better articulate their fears, anxieties, and hopes as they struggle through the experience. There are roughly 180,000 new cases of prostate cancer every year; Stegall's insights, however, apply to anyone who is coping with life-threatening diseases and conditions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What A Treat
I have found Journey Toward Wholeness very rewarding. I am truly impressed with Dr. Stegall's candor about such an intimate event and processes--probably the clearest and most honest I have read about anything so personal as this. I cried at times and laughed a lot, plus finding myself both educated and empathizing. Also, he writes well along with his honesty. I can learn much from him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stalking the Wild PSA
After losing a close friend to prostate cancer and witnessing a cousin's battle with the disease, I tackled this book hoping that it would give me some notion of my odds of avoiding or at least surviving the disease. It did not disappoint.

Stegall's book gives a clear picture of prostate cancer from a patient's point of view. Much to my surprise, I laughed out loud over the author's struggles with spells of diarrhea, incontinence, depression and impotence, and I empathized with his emotional and spiritual roller coaster rides. Once worried by my own temporary PSA result of 14, I found that the author's PSA had hit an astronomical 528 and he has survived.

By literally baring his body and soul to the reader, Stegall provides a graphic, understandable guide to medical procedures that prostate cancer patients face. More importantly, by speaking candidly about his own dark night of the soul (and the parallel struggles of his wife and children), Stegall prepares the reader for war with a deadly, heartless, and frightening enemy and a world that seldom appreciates the depth of a patient's dilemma.

After reading this book, I am much better prepared for what (my family history says) probably awaits me. With humor and verve, Stegall lifts the veil that has cloaked the disease. The book is chock full of helpful hints and references that any prostate disease patient would need. Some great advice for living comes as a bonus.

Despite my fear of cancer, the book uplifted me. Perhaps that's because I share the author's interest in religion, music and education. More likely, it is because as a professional story teller, Stegall was well prepared to relate the tale of his battles.

If you are a male, you should read this book. If you know a male, the same advice applies. I'm going to buy copies for my physicians's waiting room and for our church and public library. I'm sure that others will gain as much from the book as I did.
