4-0 out of 5 stars Good comprehensive book
The book was useful in understanding the problem of prostate inflammation treatment and different categorizations of prostatits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best desk reference for MDs & Patients Availablein 2002
Although I think that some parts of this book will be revised in the next few years as new research results in more knowledge, this book is without question the best reference for physician and interested patient available in the world today (mid-2002). For more comment, I quote Dr D. A. Shoskes, who wrote the book's Foreword:

"Chronic prostatitis has been a backwater of clinical and basic science urology research over the past few decades. Most physicians have a vague feeling that these patients have a chronic infection even though cultures are seldom positive (if they are even performed) and many patients get no improvement despite kilograms of antibiotics over months or years. It's not as though academic researchers have given much guidance to practitioners; amazingly there are only a handful of small randomized placebo-controlled studies for therapy in chronic prostatitis, the vast majority being for documented bacterial prostatitis, which makes up fewer than 10% of those patients we see in practice.

Over the past two decades, Dr. Nickel has devoted his prodigious talent and energy towards understanding this disease and testing novel therapies. Thanks to him and like-minded researchers, there is a greater understanding of the heterogeneity of the condition we now call 'chronic pelvic pain syndrome' and new rational therapeutic options which can be effective for the majority of patients. In this handbook, the first of its kind for chronic prostatitis, Dr. Nickel succinctly summarizes the current understanding of the pathophysiology, evaluation and treatment options available for these patients. Particularly illuminating is the history lesson, which demonstrates in sobering detail how little progress has been made until most recently.

This guide presents a clear stepwise approach to the management of these challenging patients in clinical practice. For the student and resident it summarizes all the didactic and clinical information they need to know. For the experienced clinician, it can provide a roadmap to novel therapies to assist in the management of their most difficult patients who are refractory to conventional treatments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading on information on prostate conditions
This is probably the best source of information out there on prostate cancer and treatment.Dr Scardino is a very good writer and presents the material in a very easy to read format. Recommend this book for everyone seeking factual information on the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr Scardino's Prostate Handbook
For someone facing Prostate Cancer, this has to be the book. His new release scheduled for later in 2010 should be even better.Dr Patrick Walsh's book (2007) is a little old and very biased towards Surgery and against other valid forms of treatment.

1-0 out of 5 stars NEVER RECEIVED THIS ITEM
I never received this item and I also never received any communication from the seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Peter Scardino's Prostate Book
I was understandably upset, frightened and confused when I received my diagnosis (the MD did not give it to me, it, perhaps accidentally, came in a unexpected phone call.)

When a co-worker of my nurse-wife talked to me,he recommended this as a book that helped him better understand his own diagnosis some years earlier

I found it invaluable in trying to understand my diagnosis. It is straight forward, easy to read, full of technical/medical information but stated in such a way (with great diagrams) the lay person can easily grasp it.

Dr. Peter doesn't have an axe to grind as to which road to take, he carefully explains all the options and encourages the reader to do as much investigation as he can before making any decisions.

It is great to have an expert surgeon discuss all aspects of Prostate Cancer and then leave the choices up to the patient.

While this is just one of more than 4 books I have read, I believe it is the best, most thorough volumn of them all and I highly recommend it to anyone diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and their significant other as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not always myofacial
Well I respect the author and this book, it does not represent all men with Prostatitis. I have battled this disease for a long time now, and was told the answer lay in this book, or with the Stanford Protocol, advocated on the chronicprostatitis forum, which I initially believed. This can be dangerous, as I bought into this myth, without looking at other options. It turns out it was mycoplasma genitalium and treatable with antibiotics. I almost spent 8k to go to Stanford, not to mention the thousands I already spent on PT, etc. I am glad I kept investigating on my own. My advice, read the book, but don't forget to look at all avenues and causes.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS SAVED MY LIFE!
I have suffered from chronic pelvic pain since I was eighteen, which was fourteen years ago.I developed the pain through over-stretching.Initially I thought that it had been a tear or sprain.Who knows, it might have been.Physical therapy helped me up to a point, but I could not get rid of the inflammation or sever burning.I was in pain constantly regardless of what I was doing: sitting or standing. It got to the point that my legs atrophied and I was forced to sit in a chair constantly: it hurt worse standing than sitting.Every physician I went to could not help me.Urologist didn't understand what was going on and every physical therapist told me that there was no connection between my pelvic floor and the other areas I was feeling pain. They would usually blow me off and tell me that I needed to go see a psychologist.I did! Even a psychiatrist!Even my brother who is a physician could not help me.I had searched the web for help and I came across a lot of stuff.I found a place in China that will directly inject your prostate with antibiotics. There is the Chicago clinic.I even started taking all of these weird supplements.Nothing helped. My whole life was destroyed by this problem.Anyone who has suffered from this or knows someone who suffers from this will testify.I wouldn't wish this on my enemy.Because of this injury my whole life stopped.I still live at home.I haven't graduated college. When my ex-fiancé got married I wanted to give up.Luckily, I found this book just like many of you have who are reading this right now.I did a google search and found this book right here on this site. After reading the book I started to get better. My whole life was here!I enrolled in the clinic. At first I was hesitant, but I had nothing to lose. After fourteen years of hell, by the third day I was pain free.It lasted for a couple hours, actually through the night. It was amazing. This is actually an easy fix. It's like have a constantly flexed muscle that needs to relax: that's it.The process can be long but it is simple. There is nothing complicated. You learn how to manually stretch your floor and on top of that you learn how to relax. There are no medications, no injections it's not that complicated! The treatment is simple and completely effective.I met people there who had had surgery on their genitals! It is very sad that even today medical industry is clueless about this.I went to the clinic about two months ago.Today I am lifting weights, playing basketball, having sex regularly and even, although not recommended, doing sit-ups all in the same day! No joke.If anyone out there has questions about me or the clinic write me.I'll help you!Thank you Dr. Wise, Tim and Sarah!

4-0 out of 5 stars Information: A+ Presentation: C+
To my knowledge, this is the only book on the subject of chronic pelvic pain and after reading it, I finally have a sense of hope for my condition. In my situation, symptoms having been getting worse over the past year - not so bad that I've been incapacitated, but bad enough that I've been concerned for my long term health. This book has been a godsend. For now I understand what causes, and how to treat my pelvic pain. That is a huge revelation.

About a year ago, I went to a urologist, who, after performing some tests, stated my problem was simply stress. However, he provided no information on how to TREAT my current symptoms. This book has filled that void, and now I have sense of hope for the future. And that is very important. Time will tell if how much symptoms will improve.I've already had some abatement of my symptoms just since reading the book.

I have to disagree with one reviewer who feels this book is merely an advertisement for their week long program in Northern California. It's really just in the chapter on Trigger Point Release that the authors bang that drum, and it's for good reason: These are techniques that, as far as I can tell, DO require supervision for safety and best results.

My only criticism of the book lies in the area of presentation.Dr. Wise and Dr. Anderson are not writers, and it shows. The book desperately needs a competent editor - it is littered with typos and grammatical mistakes (there's a even a grammatical mistake on the cover!), and some sentences are downright clunky.I found the chapter on Paradoxical Relaxation particularly awkward.

But don't throw out the baby with the bath water. All in all this is a huge achievement in the research and treatment of assorted pelvic pain conditions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Possibility
I am halfway through reading this book and think that the info. is helpful to my condition (prostatitis). I will know better after I finish reading and impliment some of the exercises and such recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
It is definitely not a self-help book, quite a lot of information though. So how to treat yourself though moment - to moment paradoxical relaxation? Unfortunately ,you will not find the answer in the book.

Product Description

Chronic Prostatitis is a common and debilitating condition affecting 5-12% of men worldwide. The most common form is category III, or Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome. Cutting-edge clinical research has led to advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of prostatitis, a group of conditions that is at once extremely common, poorly understood, inadequately treated and under-researched. In Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome, the author provides today’s most current information covering the four categories of prostatitis (acute, chronic bacterial, CPPS and asymptomatic inflammation). A diverse international group of contributors that includes urologists (academic, primary care and front line private practice), scientists, psychologists, and pain specialists from the National Institutes of Health provide the reader with novel approaches to helping their patients. The chapters in this important new work cover general evaluation of the prostatitis patient, the approach to acute prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndrome, evidence behind individual therapies and ancillary topics such as erectile dysfunction, infertility, the link between chronic prostatitis and prostate cancer, male interstitial cystitis and the potential etiologic role of calcifying nanoparticles. Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome offers novel approaches to diagnosing this condition as well as providing ways in which to ease the suffering of the patient with prostatitis.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you have this problem, it is a must read prior to surgery.
As the book reveals with ample statistics, prostate surgery for "pain" rarely works, and creates more problems. The more you learn about pelvic pain, the better you will feel!

1-0 out of 5 stars Book Not Useful
This book presumes all pelvic pain can be cured with relaxation and at the author's clinic with his brand of expensive physical therapy. That is inaccurate at best. The reality, I have learned, pelvic pain is a complex and individual problem and I think sufferers are better off spending money elsewhere than a book that claims to have the answers and doesn't!

4-0 out of 5 stars Boaring to read but valuable.
This book was to boaring for me to read but was very acurate as to what it mentioned. If you live in California they have a clinic that they can provide. If your like me you will need a plane ticket. Call them for pricing. They treat prostititus by applying preasure to certain points in the body.I purchased this book close to the end of my strugle with this illness. And did not read it through. How everI did have positive results applying the methods, I did read!Fortunatly I was able to reduse my prostate by treating y constipation, which in turn released preasure on my prostate. If you have prostititus and constipation I strongly recomened a tratment called a "Colonic" Provided at most Health Spas.

5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary book that really helps !!
A Headache in the Pelvis which describes the new treatment for pelvic pain developed at Stanford University is the best book anybody could read who is suffering from pelvic pain.
I have read all the editions and just finished the 4th edition which includes treatment for women as well as men.Wise and Anderson are the pioneers in this treatment.I can't praise this book enough!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Headache in the Pelvis:
The book is written to help you understand why the pain in your pelvis can be such a pain. The only thing that I found rather disappointing was that they waited to till 3/4 of the way thru the book before they let you know that you should really come to their clinic for a week to help solve your problem. Although it really implies that this is a self help book it is a advertisement for their clinic in addition. A book called the Pelvic Pain Solution by Dayne Herren gives you the same information but is a simplified form.He also has a relaxation disk which I use 2 times a day to wind down and relax. This is a key solution to both this book and his.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Headache in the Pelvis
This is ABSOLUTELY the most ACCURATE book I have ever read, and I have never done a review of a book before, but I just have to on this one.I asked my daughter to order it for me and she did.I haven't quite finished reading it yet (still in the process), but it is soooo true.I am so excited about the results of the exercises in this book that I just had to do this review of it.I have been having lots of trouble with my bowels not working since I was in a wreck a little over 15 years ago from which I found out later that I had a blood clot in the groin area and now have Lupus, cirrhosis, and diabetes. My intestines only worked from once to twice a week for the past four to five years. With these exercises (and I've only done them for one month now) my bowels are moving every day. This is AMAZING for me because I have tried everything before, and nothing worked.I have been from doctor to doctor trying to get help.I am soooo thankful to the kind doctors that took their precious time to write this book!I don't know them, but they deserve a great reward for this.I'm just soooo AMAZED at the exercises, and what they say about getting the blood supply to the muscles is so true! Thanks again to all that took the time to write such an accurate book.WOW

3-0 out of 5 stars Just to be honest...
After reading the previous 'review' I have to be very skeptical of it.

The fact that the book was released in February and the reviewer states "It is now 2 1/2 years after I first started to practice..." means that they are not reviewing the book, but the book writer and his practices.I would almost think that the person has a vested interest in the success of the book.

I may buy it yet, since I have only recently realized that I have prostatitis.I will listen to my physician's recommendations first, then look to alternative therapies, usually under the supervision of my physician. If you find that you are not comfortable enough to do the same, then I would suggest that you get a new physician, until you find one that will not only be responsible, but listen to your thoughts also.I fired 4 physicians before I found the one that I currently have, you can too.Doctors aren't gods, they need your business, not the other way around.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works
I experienced pain above my groin and in the pelvis/abdomen for about four years before it was successfully controlled--mostly elminated--by learning the techniques from these authors. My pain was a dull ache, and the pain would worsen if I had to stand or walk for a long time (e.g. a movie theater line or walking in a shopping mall). Three urologists in 4 years could not find the reason for the pain, but it persisted. I also endured uncomfortable invasive medical procedures and bouts of powerful antibiotics, all without being healed. Finally, a urologist who had heard a research paper being delivered by one of the book's authors at a medical conference referred me to them at Stanford Urology. After beginning their progressive/deep relaxation protocol and physical therapy, my symptoms were reduced in intensity by 90%-100% (becaming mild, occasional episodes rather than chronic and painful). The best part of it: no drugs, no fancy medical procedures or spooky side effects. Actually knowing how to heal the problem elminated the tremendous emotional and mental burden of having the previously mysterious pain; I could control it--and even eliminate it. This is not the quick-fix; it takes time and discipline, probably for a lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars the techniques in this book healed me completely
I suffered from prostatitis/CPPS for 3 years and my life became absolutely miserable. I received 4 different diagnoses from 4 urologists, tried over 20 prescription medications, vitamins and herbs and underwent several very uncomfortable and expensive procedures, all of which did hardly anything to help my symptoms which had slowly increased in intensity over time (sound familiar?) Eventually I met one of the authors of this book, David Wise, and he taught me the techniques described in the book. Slowly I began to heal myself, without any medication. Six months later my symptoms were diminished significantly and nine months later I felt I was healed. It is now 2 1/2 years after I first started to practice these methods and I feel that I have been freed of this horrific condition. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for those who are still suffering. There are many schools of thought regarding this syndrome and I studied all of them obsessively at one time. I feel very strongly that over the coming years the ideas in this book will eclipse the other models of this disease and come to be recognized as the most powerful methods for dealing with it as more and more people are seen to have solid and long-lasting benefits. Mine is not the last testimonial you will see. I should say however that it is not a simple or quick solution and it requires a lot of devotion, but chances are the end-result will be your freedom. Best of luck, do not abandon hope until you have given these methods your most sincere effort. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Total and Complete
This is a "vanity press", self-published pile of junk! Go to Google and enter "prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain" and look at the sites you get. They completely discount the theories the author Hennenfent (who no longer practises as a doctor - check the AMA listings) is pushing. What makes this so much worse is that the author seems to have some sort of relationship with the two or three clinics in the world which profit from applying the unusual treatments he recommends. Buyer beware!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this despicable and unscientific harmful book - NEGATIVE STARS (fewer than zero!)
Avoid this despicable and unscientific harmful book - NEGATIVE STARS (fewer than zero!)

The Wise-Anderson book sells the idea that disabling pelvic pain is the patient's own fault -- the result of "tension" arising out of bad habits and guilt. The idea is evil: an outrageous and dangerous and antiquated fraud. Consider:

1. There is no science behind Wise-Anderson's book: no double-blind peer reviewed studies, and no patient follow-up on which such studies might be based. It derives from long-discredited ideas by Freud, who blamed his patient's problems on "hysteria" which later turned out to be epilepsy and other real diseases.

2. I have no medical training, but I figured out real doctors use differentials (lists of possible causes) for pelvic pain. Many causes of pelvic pain are well known, mundane and curable (as examples, infection, nonpalpable inguinal hernias, and kidney stones which can cause "referred" pain in surprising places). But the reader of the Wise-Anderson book is led away from mundane medicine to blame themselves -- as though self-induced "tension" is the real problem!

3. I don't doubt that muscles tense in response to pain, but to blame the pain on muscles (as the Wise-Anderson book does) is backwards -- in my opinion, that mixes up cause and effect.

In short, Wise-Anderson are profiteers -- making money (from book sales, quack meditation centers, and quack internal massages) by diverting people from the long known mainstream causes of pelvic pain.

In my case after years of mis-direction by Wise-Anderson and others, I learned I had a nonpalpable (difficult to detect by feel) inguinal hernia -- a very common and curable problem. At some point I apparently also had an infection, which (I was told) made the pain worse. Hernias -- by allowing bacteria-laden intestines to poke where they don't belong -- may make infections more likely.

What I know for sure is: I'm cured.

Patients will know they're making progress when they find a doctor who knows a differential for pelvic pain which does NOT include the Wise-Anderson protocol. Avoid the pelvic pain profiteers, starting with avoiding Wise-Anderson's despicable, misleading and harmful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars finally, something that works!
I was having many symptoms described in this book and they peaked while I was out of the country in a developing country, no less. After having antibiotics, alpha-blockers, antispasmodics, painkillers and being told I had BPH and later IC, I had started to despair. The urologists couldn't really figure out what I had and when I told them about the enormous amount of stress I had leading up to this and that I spent alot of time working at a desk chair...well they looked blank. On my recent trip I was in so much pain and the only thing that really helped was a hot shower. That was my first clue that something such as relaxation might help. I had frequency, urgency, burning pain, pain in the penis, and scrotum. I had access to a computer with the internet on my trip and during my down time I started to review the medical literature on IC in men and prostatis in men. I was convinced I had IC, although a potassium test was negative (one doc was pushing me to go on Elmiron while one was against it).I found some helpful info on the internet about overactive bladders and stuff like don't panic and try to stretch the time interval to urination. Doing that and drinking a great deal of water helped with the problem. After reading a review of this book at the IC network, I called the publisher and somehow the author (Dr. Wise) called me. I was blown away that he would talk with me. We talked for some time and he seemed to be caring, compassionate, and well versed in the medical aspects of the problem. I started to get better as soon as he gave me some tips over the phone! I got the book and it is very comprehensive. I started the relaxation procedures but I can tell this will take some dedication but it is really worth it. I'm bringing the book to my urologist next week.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
If you've experienced symptoms of pelvic dysfunction, such as pain, difficulty with urination, or sexual problems, and have not yet found an answer, this book may be exactly what you need. The book applies to both sexes, but I can speak from experience to the men: if you have any of these symptoms, and/or have been diagnosed with prostatitis and especially if antibiotics have given limited or no relief from symptoms, PLEASE read the book. I began to improve within a week of starting the book and applying its methods.

However, as the author points out, the treatment methods found in this book are not a quick fix. They require dedication and consistent effort. If you are as frustrated in your search as I was in mine, you will have no problem making that effort, and you may find the book to be a godsend, as I did. ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Prostatitis," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Prostatitis in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Prostatitis when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Prostatitis, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
