Living With RSDS: Your Guide to Coping with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome
I have had this horrific disease for almost eight years now.I am completely disabled and about to enter an assisted living facility.Through the past eight years I seen quite a bit of literature on RSDS.However, this one is definitely THE best.It covers every aspect of this disease.All the information that an RSD-er needs to have, and thorough information for friends and family.One of the hardest battles we face with this illness is the fact that most people, including in the medical profession, know very little, if anything, about the disease.Many times, when I may be in horrible pain and in need of a little extra help (i.e. carrying in groceries, a wheelchair, a ride somewhere) people do not always offer it, even if they've been told what I have.This is due to a lack of knowledge.RSD-ers suffer in their own private hell, and tend not to tell others how bad they are hurting.It is vital that this book be brought to the attention of the ones in the medical field and those friends and family members of the afflicted.

Wonderfully Informative and Helpful
Having had just been diagnosed with RSD/CRPS I bought this book as part of my research quest. This was the singly most informative and helpful thing I came across! (and I did a lot of research using a variety of methods)

The book contains three informal sections: the medical which includes the history, past research and medical infomation; living with RSD; and future research.

The first 5 chapters cover the background of the condition and detailed medical information including defining RDS, explaining the pain, diagnosing, and treating RSD. Chapters 6 through 10 are the living with RSD section and were the biggest benefit for me. These chapters cover how RSD can change a person as well as impact a family, adjusting to a life with RSD, living with chronic pain, neurological changes, how to communicate better, when a child has RDS and going out in public when you have RSD (which can be quite difficult). I can't express just how beneficial these chapters were for me. Reading the living with RSD section was a turning point in my 'new' life. Learning tips for better day to day coping and finding out that so many other people with this condition feel the same way I do and actually have had the very same thoughts I was having did amazing things for me. I even used the book as a communication tool with my husband by highlighting some sentences and sections and asking him read them. That spurred him to read more of the book. In the last chapter future research is presented. There is also an appendix with Helpful Tips from RSDS Patients.

If you have RSD/CRPS or you know someone who does I highly recommend this book. It is not only a source of information but it's a source of psychological support.

RSD in real life
I am a kid who has rsd. Life with rsd is as close to hell as it gets. My doctor couldn't explain it, I couldn't explain it to my friends, I couldn't explain it to me: until I read this book. If you have rsd, kid or adult, I highly suggust READING THE BOOK! (It hurts a lot less than having a sympathedic block :)

One of the first steps to understanding
I was injured on the job Jan. 2004 and since that time have been diagnosed and treated for RSDS. It has limited & possibly stopped my working life, however, being lost in a workman's compensation buracracy, I had to begin to learn myself how to talk to the doctor about RSDS. Not every patient reacts the same, not every patient is limited in what they can do - BUT - every patient will see their life change somewhat due to pain. This book was my beginning as far as reading material to helpme to understand RSDS. It is very informative, easy to read & understand and offers insight on taking control of your situation. It doesn't talk as much as I'd like about treatment plans and options. I have never taken so many drugs before and this book calmed my fears somewhat of becoming an addict. I will continue to learn about this pain syndrome because if I do not, I can't depend on the medical world to do it for me. I am an ER physician who had spinal trauma
This book is excellent.A difficult subject made understandable. I read it after extreme suffering for about 2 years. That was 1994. I went looking for Dr. Hooshmand and took my wife to see him in Vero Beach. She did well and he helped me a great deal both as in my medical understanding as well as in dealing with pain without use of narcotics.We had been to many physians and done multiple therapies prior to reading his book. Dr. Hooshmand outlined what was wrong and gave a course of care that went as he said it would. I was intending to pass on my gratitude to him and just found out he has retired. He had written a great deal of medical literature and I find his studies all most interesting.

The only book for RSD sufferers
If you have RSD, Dr. Hooshmund has now retired, however, he is 'the' Doc in inderstanding RSD.So even though it is a medical text, it is a wonderful book to have if you have this condition, or have a family member who does. Or if you know of someone with the condition, it would make the best gift to them (after you have read some of it yourself).

You will not get the information in any other book or article.it tells of an amino acid that we need that gets drained from our bodies and other pertinent information.

This book is an excellent resource for doctor's or patients with RSD.It is comprehensive and scientific.

Information for patient ,physican and staff
RSD patients hsitorically have had to to seek out information for themselves on the nightmare called RSD as information and treatment move slowly down the medical and insurance pipeline.Although most patients andtheir families will not be able to completly understand the more clinicalaspects of RSD discussed in this book, they can still glean basicinformation regarding currently available treatments and Dr. Hooshman givesspace to a recommended diet.RSD patients often are given only minimalinformation/instruction about their condition and although some of theclincial aspects of this book may be frightening, most RSD patientsdesperate for a return to health and pain free living will work their waythrough the portions of this book that are helpful to patient and laymanand avert their eyes from the portions that they are yet ready to learnabout.Three cheers to Dr. Hooshman for publishing this valuable volume. ... Comprehensive, but...
This is a wonderfully comprehensive guide that will help a lot of readers find many sources to cope with RSD.I have RSD and have found myself scavenging every resource I could find in an effort to find the peace I lost.However, I must say that if you are computer literate and savy with online searches, you will be able to find most of the resources in this book online.If searching online is a painful task for yourself or a loved one, then this book will help pool the resources in one place to help get on the road to pain-free living sooner than later.Thanks Mr. Parker for compiling all this data.

Be Careful!
All I can say is do the research yourself before you make any decisions. The SCS, while excellent in cases of failed back syndrome, is not the treatment of choice for RSD or CRPS as so many doctors want to confuse the general public now. Read this book, then read Chronic Pain: Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy-Prevention adn Management by Hooshang Hooshmand and THEN make your decision. Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is the new nomenclature that encompasses the older diagnostic entities of reflex sympathetic dystrophy (now CRPS 1) and causalgia (CRPS 2). CRPS arises after injuries such as sprains, strains, or fractures, but in some patients the cause is unknown. From the supplier: Attorneys representing people suffering from reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) should be aware the RSD is one of the most frequent medical problems and that serious, long-term injury can only be avoided with prompt diagnosis and treatment. Early RSD is often misdiagnosed or inappropriately treated. Plaintiffs' attorneys should establish a chronology of the earliest occurrence of symptoms and when symptoms were reported to a physician. Then the attorney should determine when RSD was diagnosed and whether treatment focused on the underlying injury or the RSD, since treatment for the underlying injury can exacerbate RSD.
