Product Description
One of the world’s leading authorities on repetitive strain injury tells you how to prevent, treat, and recover from RSI

Living with repetitive strain injury (RSI) can be painful, exasperating, and devastating. If you’ve given up hope that there is any help for your symptoms, if you’ve tried medications, wrist splints, neck braces, and exercises--and have had only temporary relief--this book is for you. Dr. Emil Pascarelli, one of the world’s leading authorities on RSI, offers a comprehensive, prescriptive, practical, and long-awaited sequel to his bestselling Repetitive Strain Injury. You’ll read all about the advances in RSI diagnosis, treatment, and prevention that have occurred since the publication of the previous book. Inside is welcome advice on:

  • Recognizing the early signs and risk factors of RSI before they lead to a serious or debilitating condition
  • Finding the right doctor, the right diagnosis, and the right treatment
  • Preventing RSI using commonsense solutions such as keyboard techniques, posture, and workstation setup
  • Employing practical methods to regain the use of muscles, nerves, and tendons that have been damaged by RSI
  • Relieving not only the pain but also the emotional stress that so often accompanies RSI
  • Following specific warnings for musicians and other at-risk professionals

Because symptoms of RSI are rarely visible, health professionals, employers, and fellow employees often cannot understand what a sufferer of RSI is going through. This book is the best way to understand RSI and learn what you can do about it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some RSI-category problems not too well covered
I was hoping for a more complete discourse on Focal Dystonia, which is a pretty common musician's malady. There is some material, but I found a lot more in "Musicophilia" by Oliver Sack.Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain, Revised and Expanded Edition. The resources were pretty good overall, although it's also helpful to serarch the Internet on your own, because so many musicians and others are publishing their personal experiences and describing ways they found to deal with the problem - including what did not work. For instance, I found two guitarists who tried Botox treatment, one of the standard treatments, with very negative results.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This book covers the scientific and medical knowledge about repetitive strain injury. It discusses the symptoms and causes, and sometimes awareness itself can begin the healing process. It will motivate RSI sufferers to set up ergonomic workstations and to seek medical help when necessary. The book also mentions the emotional factors that can lead to RSI, which is something that not people are aware of.

The reason that I am giving it four stars, is that it does not cover enough treatment options for this condition. Fortunately, many physical therapists are familiar with massage therapy, stretching programs that could help relieve the symptoms. Overall, I think it is a good and informative read, but more research is necessary if someone wants to overcome this condition. 5-0 out of 5 stars VERY helpful
A few months after starting a demanding programming job, my hands started hurting.A co-worker recommended an earlier version of this book. Actually, he said, "Leave work, go to the bookstore and buy and read it and don't come back until you finish it."

Pascarelli has a ton of information about RSI in this book, all of which makes sense. His main thesis is that RSI is easy to prevent and hard to cure, and his advice on how to avoid it is excellent.

If your hands are hurting, do like my co-worker said.Get this book right away and read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really excellent
I found this book to be easy to understand and very in depth. After reading it I went to my doctor with questions and I feel I was able to get more out of the expensive visit. Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not much of specific use to me.
A few good sketches of body parts, but the general information in this book was not of much use to me.I have put the book away, and will not likely look at it again.I think that the money would be better spent on other books of this nature that include more specifics. ... Read more

Particularly outstanding is Dr. Pascarelli’s sensitivity to the impact of emotional distress and fear on physical well-being and recovery." —Stewart Leavitt, PhD Office of Ergonomics Researchers Leavitt Medical Communications The great speed, ease, and efficiency of personal computers can lead to severe physical and emotional pain. The problem is called "Repetitive Strain Injury," or RSI, and includes a wide range of conditions—from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome to Tenosynovitis. Over time, this "epidemic of the ’90s" damages the muscles, nerves, and tendons of the hands, wrists, and arms. Dr. Pascarelli’s seven-point plan offers proven ways of preventing the onset of RSI as well as tested methods that will help RSI sufferers to once again lead healthy, productive, and pain-free lives.Amazon.com Review
This book has become a bible for those suffering from RSI. It explains what to ask your doctor (and why) when you go in for a diagnosis; it also lists more than two dozen types of RSI and related conditions, from cervical radiculopathy to reflex sympathetic dysfunction to fibromyalgia. If these terms sound intimidating, then the book succeeds in bringing them down to clear, manageable definitions.

Quilter and Pascarelli also delineate the causes of RSI that are often unconsidered, including being obese, typing while cradling the phone with your shoulder, and having long fingernails. They don't discuss many of the different surgeries used for RSI but instead choose to discuss the various kinds of physical and occupational therapy treatments; acupuncture; stretching; vitamins and nutrition; relaxation techniques, deep tissue massage, and guided visualization. There's also an extensive list of helpful tricks for adapting to living with RSI, from making changes in the kitchen to re-learning how to drive.

This is also the RSI book if you’re looking for information on the psychological ramifications of RSI and how to handle both time off from work and the return to the office. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Only one complaint
A fabulous book and I found the information very helpful. The only complaint I have is that I found this book more disheartening, if not alarming, than some of the other top books on RSI.Sure, we do need a realistic look at what we are facing, but with other books I felt more motivated and hopeful after reading them (such as It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome! by Damany & Bellis).

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you are paining at work
This book is easy to read, has good illustrations, symptom descriptions, and suggestions for diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

3-0 out of 5 stars good
I found this to be the best book as far as having pictures to show how to do stretches and on good typing technique.

Other books I would recommend are:

`The Repetitive Strain Handbook by Robert M Simon, MD and Ruth Aleskovsky'.

`The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Clair Davies'

`Living Better Every Patient's Guide to Living with Illness by Carol j. Langenfeld'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good comprehensive introduction to RSI.
"Repetitive Strain Injury: A Computer User's Guide" by Pascarelli is a good introduction for those who know nothing about RSI. Even a cursory search of the Internet will turn up several references to this book as the classic on the subject. It describes what RSI is, what the risk factors are, how to evaluate your physician in terms of his or her RSI awareness, how to treat RSI symptoms, and it offers tips on workstation configuration, typing and mouse technique, monitor settings, and daily living. If you think you have RSI and your first instinct is to go out and buy yourself a wrist wrest and a splint, stop and read this book first, it explains why these amateurish attempts at self treatment are a bad idea. I was disappointed that the book didn't offer more specific advice for actually treating RSI, though I understand that would have been difficult given the large number of causes and manifestations of the disorder. The book claims on the front cover to contain a "seven point program for treatment", but most of the advice for treatment itself consists of "go see a doctor". This is frustrating given the book's repeated claim that most doctors know nothing about RSI or don't even believe in it in the first place. Another thing that really annoyed me was the book's assertion that employers are largely responsible for RSI. The basic message was: "RSI isn't your fault. It's just another example of how `the Man' exploits you in a thankless and mindless job." In my case, my RSI was caused by my own obsessive work habits. The book does list "Driven Behavior" as a risk factor for RSI, but it gets only a perfunctory mention. Another negative is that the book focuses on tendonitis-type RSI, whereas my problem was clearly nerve-related (numbness, weakness, and lack of coordination in hands, forearms, and upper arms). The book that really nailed my problem on the head, and that I recommend as a supplement to this one if your RSI is caused by obsessive computer use, was "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!", by Damany, who worked under Pascarelli treating patients for many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward and helpful
This book is the single most useful collection of practical RSI information I've found. Highly recommended for anyone trying to figure out how to stop hurting themselves when they're working. I have bought four copies for friends. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
Sharon Butler was working as a massage therapist and Hellerwork practitioner when she developed carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. Unable to sleep through the night because of the pain and concerned about her livelihood, she built upon her knowledge of connective tissue and developed a series of stretching exercises to gently relieve the tension in her body. After daily stretching in this way, her pain soon subsided. To prove that these exercises weren't just a fluke, Butler intentionally overworked her body to bring back her symptoms. While this may not have been the smartest move, her stretching program again relieved her pain.

The magic behind her powerful exercises is their focus on fascial tissue. Fascia, which is stronger than steel, holds the body together. It wraps around muscle fibers, bones, and tendons. (If you've ever looked at an uncooked piece of chicken and noticed the glistening white layer over the meat, you've seen fascia.) In people who overwork their bodies, the fascia hardens, a natural response to prevent future injury. Unfortunately, this stiffness worsens with repeated insults to the body. Muscles, nerves, and tendons tense up and inflame even more and may even adhere to each other. Metabolic waste products can build up and become trapped instead of being carried away by the lymph system, and even more pressure is placed on the affected body tissues.

Enter Butler's exercises. The book is arranged to let you pick and choose the correct stretches to suit your needs. Too much typing, guitar playing, or gardening? Stiff neck, tingling fingers, sore upper arms, or all three? However you developed your repetitive strain injury and whatever your upper-body symptoms (or if you're smart and you'd like to prevent such problems), there are multiple stretches in Conquering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome to suit your needs. The book is arranged to help users develop a personalized stretching program with more than 40 stretches for the upper body, forearms, wrists, fingers, and thumbs to choose from. Butler thoroughly explains the importance of stretching and the correct (and incorrect) way to do it, and the exercises are lucidly illustrated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Carpal Tunnel Book
This is very helpful to me as I am facing Carpal Tunnel surgery. The exercises provided will be so helpful following surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Release the Pain
This book was written by a massage therapist who no doubt has had a lot of experience dealing with repetitive strain injuries such as carpal tunnel. A key idea of the book is that tight tissues, particularly the fascia, are responsible for your pain and symptoms. The cure then, is to stretch them out and get things back to normal. The book intends to accomplish this goal by taking you through a series of stretches for your particular symptomatic area.

A major strength of this book is its sheer ease of using- in other words, its laid out extremely well. The stretching technique is very well explained and the bulk of the book consists of pictures of stretches that you can do for your troubled areas. Additionally, I like the fact that the author discusses the topic of your posture- which is very important because it could be contributing to your problem AND correcting it will help keep you out of trouble!

All-in-all a great resource for people suffering from repetitive strain injuries- and not just for the infamous carpal tunnel- I could see this book being of good use for a lot of other aches and pains as well. Also recommend Treat Your Own Tennis Elbow for those looking for a good resource on that particular condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give Sharon a hand.......
I had taken a fall on my shoulder, at Venice skatepark. That happened 3 months ago and my hand was still tingly. Being a drummer this became a bit of an issue for me. Needless to say, I bought this book and in just the first 2-3 days since I have been doing exercises, I already see improvement. Thanks for getting my hands back for me Sharon!

5-0 out of 5 stars Computer Programmer Aches and Pains
I am a computer programmer and have been suffering increasingly from pains in my hands, wrists, and forearms as a result of coding. My daughter, an Acupuncturist, recommended this book and said that many of her clients had benefited greatly from it.She cautioned me to read the introduction closely, since that would help me understand the approach and techniques involved.

I followed her advice and after a particularly stressful and painful day (and subsequent achy night) I performed the exercises suggested for my particular symptoms. The relief was dramatic. Most of my pain was gone after I did the exercises, and only partially returned the following day.The book says that you will need some follow-up, and I have, but at least I now have an effective way to deal with a condition I was afraid might adversely affect me in my profession.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nicely written, still waiting to see if the exercises work.
I like this book, and have been using it quite faithfully recently, after buying it a few weeks ago.It is nicely written, has good illustrations, and if it works, it will be fantastic!I recommend trying it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cassandra of RSI?
I rarely go to the supermarket without seeing checkout clerks in wrist braces and wanting to tell them (and their bosses) about Ms Quilter's books. I have this book as well as the earlier one she co-authored with Dr Emil Pascarelli. Ms. Quilter offers no miracle cures or quick fixes. But I followed her sensible advice (including a visit to my doctor) when I had my first keyboard injury some years ago, and I got better. Unfortunately, I did NOT want to hear that I was now "living with RSI" forever. Like several of the negative reviewers here, I found the author's warnings dire and depressing. However, my subsequent experience with re-injuring myself (over and over) convinced me that Ms Quilter is right. "Recovery" is only possible when you develop the "mindfulness" that I consider this book's single most important message. RSI is not like a broken bone that knits up as good as new. It's like a bad back. If I don't do my back exercises, my back goes out. If I don't follow Ms Quilter's preventive tips, my RSI flares up. My conclusion is that RSI is best viewed as a chronic condition, and the reviewers who find this point of view depressing are shooting the messenger. BTW, once RSI mindfulness becomes a habit, it is about as depressing as putting on a seat belt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relief, Finally!
I just ordered my 4th copy of Deborah QUilter's book.I fell down tonight and landed on my right hand and wrist. When I got home I went to my bookshelf to look up how to treat my sore wrist and hand, but the book was gone.I realized I'd "loaned" it to a friend who was complaining of wrist and neck pain from too much time at the computer.I love this book because of the practical information on how to take care of myself.Quilter's advice gives me hope that if I pay attention and take care of myself, I can stop my RSI (aka "carpal tunnel") from getting worse and even improve it.That's more encouraging than what I've been told by doctors. Her writing speaks to me like a friend who knows what I've been through. It's not condescending like many medical books. It isn't new-agey.It seems real, sensible.Like the other reviews here, there are scary stories of what can happen because of RSI.I worked for years as a legal word processing operator as well as writing and publishing a novel and magazine articles. My hands are my work tools.I take this very seriously. When it hurts to open a jar or pick up my cat, that is frightening.I took my hands and wrists for granted until they started throbbing and having darting pains.Quilter's book helped me to first live with my aches & pains in a manageable way. Then, following her suggestions like proper posture and taking breaks from the keyboard I have improved and feel so much better!I also enjoy her subtle sense of humor and was glad she put in a section on sex.I wasn't expecting that when I first read the book but it made me realize I wasn't the only one who had trouble "getting a grip" on the situation.:-)
As for the "dystopic" stories mentioned in previous reviews, I thought Ms. Quilter made it apparent that some suggestions should be taken with a grain of salt.I don't need to change careers or stop typing forever.Maybe some injured people do.I need to be able continue writing without pain and discomfort. This book helped me learn how to do just that and I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but one piece of important info omitted
Great book, except:

Like many authors of medical self-help books, Quilter urges her readers to enlist competent medical help. Unfortunately, she does not say that although one can find good, knowledgeable physical therapists, it is almost impossible to find an American medical doctor who knows anything about RSI. She does not mention that although it is an official diagnostic category in the UK, Australia and the Netherlands, neither RSI, nor any medical synonyms (i.e. overuse syndrome, cumulative trauma disorder, etc.) appear in American diagnostic guides (although other "controversial" syndromes like Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue syndrome do!)So ... American doctors can not officially "know" about RSI. This also makes it difficult for RSIers to follow Quilter's most important recommendations -- rest and pacing, since we often need medical justification (at least a doctor's note) to get appropriate accomodations at work.

4-0 out of 5 stars good practicaltips for living with an RSI
I disagree with the reviews below, I thought this is a fine book, a good complement to the books "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome" by Damany and " Conquering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Other Repetitive Strain Injuries" by Sharon Butler. It's true the latter two have much more on specific exercises to help get you better and I liked the medical information in Damany. However they don't have a lot of practical information on how to cope with your life during the healing process when you can't do a lot of the things you normally do in your daily life. This book fills that gap. It's got lots of practical suggestions of how to do things when you're injured. It's more of broader focus than the other books on the overall changes you need to make beyond the specific exercise program. I would recommed someone with an RSI get all three books as the information is complementary.

2-0 out of 5 stars very dystopic with little concrete information
This is an amazingly dystopic book, absolutely full of horror stories and unhappy endings. There's a chapter on how to have a sex life despite RSI, how to sue for loss of a career, the testimonial of a man who was paralysed from the waist down but found RSI more disabling etc - but nothing concrete about what RSI actually. OK, so now I know that if I have tendonitis I'm more likely to get carpal tunnel syndrome and the rest of them but this book doesn't give me information on what tendonitis (or the others) actually is or how to make much of a change. There are quick mentions of various treatments but there is no discussion of their relative merits. The author tells us about her own exercise program (30-40 minutes a morning with weights and 1 1/2 hours of ballet four times a week plus walking and stretching) but there are no specific exercises that can help you avoid recurrance or assist in healing.

Please also notice that Deborah Quilter is not a medical professional but a health writer who has had RSI herself.

There is a good, explicit (but short) section on how to change your typing which I haven't seen other places. ... Read more

Product Description
Carpal tunnel syndrome - computer wrist - is only the best known of 15 different types of repetitive strain injury, resulting from the constant performance of the same motion. Hundreds of thousands of workers suffer from the complaint. Computer programmers, factory workers and musicians are some of those who suffer work-related injuries to the neck, shoulders, forearm, wrist, hand, finger and thumbs. Dr. Jameson, a chiropractor specializing in RSI, offers first aid strategies, tells how to determine when professional help is needed, and provides alternative approaches to halt or reverse RSI.Amazon.com Review
They go by many names--tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, forearm tendinitis--but these injuries all have a common origin: our work andplay. Whether it's computer programming, carpentry, food service, orbookkeeping, many jobs today require people to hunch over intounnatural positions and then perform the same tiny movements over andover again throughout a workday. And the sports we pursue oftenaren't much better--tennis, golf, and racquetball all involve repeatedelbow- and back-straining movements.

The solution, author TimothyJameson says, is not to exclude any potential treatment: medication, physical therapy, massage, chiropractic care, or acupuncture. Aproblem like carpal tunnel syndrome could be rooted in multiplefactors--occupation, weight, stress, disease (including diabetes),previous injuries--and, chances are, no one discipline can find andtreat all of them. Jameson also recommends making dietary changes, shifting to aZone-type diet of40 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent protein, and 30 percent fat, mostly from unsaturated or polyunsaturated sources.

RepetitiveStrain Injuries is about as user-friendly and complete a book asone can imagine. For example, early in the book, Jameson includesanatomical charts pinpointing areas of pain or abnormal sensations, and shows which chapters to turn to for information about them. Alsohelpful is the menu of alternative treatments, from chiropractic careto lesser-known movement techniques such as Feldenkrais, andbiofeedback and guided imagery. --Lou Schuler ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!!
I used to be a construction worker and had the repetitive move of using a pair of pliers to tie wire on bridge decks. Unfortunately, twisting my hand thousands of times per day to tie while squeezing the pliers shut, often left my hands tight, cramped and sometimes swollen night after night. Being a keyboard player only made matters worse. Some gigs I could barely contain the pain in my wrists and fingers that resulted from my job. Luckily I discovered some exercises to alleviate the stress and strain of my job.

So, when I first read this book, I was surprised to see these same exercises and more. Not only did Dr. Jameson focus on the hands, but the entire body as well. Let me sum up this review quick. If you are experiencing pain in your joints from repetitive moves, whether it's in the hands, legs or body, GET THIS BOOK and find the answers to alleviating that pain!

1-0 out of 5 stars No good
Since I got RSI myself, I've read a number of books on the subject, and of all I've read, this book was at the bottom of the barrel. I'm not saying it is completely without merits, but most of the good advice are available inall other books I've read. I do, however, fail to see advice aboutmeditation and guided imagery as relevant to RSI.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
It's a great adjunct to my treatment with my chiropractor. My chiropractor told me that a lot of patients do better when they eat more protein. It wasn't until I happened to open to the page that discussedprotein, carbohydrates and insulin (around p.122)that I understood why thatis true. The book is helping me to learn more about taking better care ofmyself during my recovery.

I like the pictures that show me how to do theexercises properly.

The part that seems to need improvement is somethinglike information on the Alexander Technique, and some of the other methods. But things that are familiar to chiropractor such as nutrition andchiropractic methods are excellent in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It gives ideas on how to deal with this disability
You actually learn! It gives ideas on how to deal with the disability -- and the psychological part, too. It's a wonderful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Alternatives in RSI treatment
This book provides information on RSI that includes alternative treatments, in contrast to (or to complement, I should say) Pascarelli/Quilter's standard-med emphasis. The difficulty in treating RSI has prompted a great deal of interest in alternative therapies.

I think the real strength of what Dr. Tim has written is his emphasis on an interdisciplinary treatment approach. In contrast to consulting a single practitioner who may have limited perspective and treatment preferences, Dr. Tim advocates for a team effort that *includes* standard medical professionals but brings in other practices such as chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, and others. Also, I think the book gives a decent basic rundown on the physiology of RSI, and includes good rehab information. While I consider some of the therapies presented here to be very questionable,at a minimum you will learn what each method claims to achieve for you from a writer who is not trying to sell one of them over!the other but hopes to draw something from each. ... Product Description
A proven recovery plan for the over 8 million sufferers of repetitive strain injury, and a guide for the prevention of future injuries.

Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is a painful, potentially disabling condition that most commonly stems from damage to the upper torso. Long-term misuse or overuse of everyday tools like computers and cash registers results in the painful hands, arms, and neck that are symptomatic of RSI, a condition whose incidence has increased 80 percent in this country since 1990.

The Repetitive Strain Injury Handbook is a unique, user-friendly guide that is broken into two parts: (1) the 8-step recovery plan and (2) an RSI prevention guide. The 8-step plan moves RSI sufferers beyond the common denial of this ailment and into a diagnosis and treatment plan with a doctor. It provides:

Nutrition adviceAn exercise programBreathing tipsTraditional and alternative pain management suggestions A holistic maintenance plan for long-term health

The second section is filled with suggestions, stories, and tips for RSI sufferers that will help them live pain-free at home, at work, and in their social and intimate lives. There is also a special section of information on women and RSI, since pregnancy, PMS, osteoporosis, mastectomy, and menopause can all aggravate this condition. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Best section available on "coping" strategy
If your repetitive strain situation has gotten to the point where you need primarily information on coping with the pain and inconvenience, possibly from surgery, this book has the best coverages of that aspect, among the 6 books I've read. The non-MD author appears to have written approximately 1/3 of the book from a non-technical viewpoint, describing the life experiences and ideas on coping, down to the most intimate issues. Easily worth the "price of admission" for any of the ideas you might pick up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of the quiet epidemic of the computer age
An excellent sourcebook covering all aspects of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) the new epidemic of the technological age. You may have RSI and not even know it, and if you are reading this review you are definitely at risk for it (computer users are particularly at risk). Almost two-thirds of all workplace injuries in the U.S. are caused by it.The author, a newspaper reporter, describes the injury, what causes it, how to recognize if you have it, how to avoid it if you don't yet have it, the various treatments available, and how it is likely to affect your life outside the workplace. To illustrate each chapter, the author has included interviews with RSI victims from across the country. She concludes with a description of her own affliction with RSI, a story that is searing, yet ultimately uplifting. The most important value of this book is not just that it is a comprehensive review of this disease, but even more importantly, that it calls attention to a disease that can be truly thought of as the new plague of the twentieth century, a disease that has so far claimed its victims in silence. What is particularly insidious about RSI is that unlike the other epidemics that afflicted humankind, the contagion is not spread from person to person, but from machine to person, meaning the epidemic will increase just about as fast as our use of computer keyboards increases. Because this epidemic is not transmitted in the way previous epidemics have been, it has remained a silent yet increaing crippler of otherwise healthy and productive adults. The public awareness that will be required to halt the spread of this disease can be found in the pages of this book.I highly recommend it. ... Product Description
Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Repetitive Strain Injury provides a summary of information from a conference on chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia syndrome (FS), and related disorders. Many of the contributors are known for being actively involved in the study of the target disorders and represent countries around the world. In addition to health professionals, the contributors represent the legal profession and the insurance industry of Canada.

The unique feature of this volume is its emphasis on disability and compensation. In Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Repetitive Strain Injury readers will find concise summaries of the formal presentations given at the Vancouver Conference in July 1994. The underlying tenor in the chapters is on viewing affective (psychological) pathology as a contributor to the underlying processes of these disorders. Readers are encouraged to follow closely the logic of each author’s academic exercise. They will find that in many cases, the authors provoke more answers than they are able to answer, in the hope of promoting continued research toward finding concrete answers.

The conference was designed to address etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, treatment, disability, medico-legal issues and cost containment. The program agenda was issue driven rather than condition based. The papers were presented in a manner which allowed delegates and speakers to see the overlap and differences between these conditions.

The purpose of Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Repetitive Strain Injury is to provide education for primary care physicians, specialist physicians, other health care disciplines, patients, and the public. A second purpose is to enable investigators in the three topic areas to get new information from specialists around the world to develop new ideas, which will inform future research and consensus. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars borrowed it from the library, finally had to buy it
This is an amazing book!I borrowed it from the library on a whim, kept it until I maxed out my ability to renew it and then racked up surcharges for being late. I just didn't want to part with this book. Finally had to buy it!I've only practiced for 3-4 years, I'm NOT a teacher. This book is easy to understand & the pictures and instructions of poses are concise and to the point. It is so amazing to learn the intention of each pose, apply it what ever physical or emotional condition and feel in that moment the results. Can't say enough about how helpful this book has been to me as part of my yoga practice and in my life in general.

Topics include how and why these injuries occur, which treatments to avoid when possible (including surgery), and how noninvasive methods succeed where others fail. Each chapter includes black-and-white photo sequences of therapy techniques and stretches. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat misleading title
I have to agree with some of my precedessors here, the book is a well-written brochure that stops short of explaining how to actually treat RSI. While I am fully aware that you can not learn such a technique from a book, it would be helpful if the author had gone more into detail in regards to pressure points etc.
On the other hand the book offers a decent overview over the most common RSI's and how they occur, which can be helpful if someone is just starting out in the field. The exercise setion is probaly the most useful part of the book/
However, I feel most people would get more out of a book on trigger point massage such as Donna Finados: Trigger Point self care manual" if your goal is actual pain relief.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I have used the book as a quick reference / exercise guide and to learn about ART treatment.I am absolutely delighted with the book for helping me avoid surgery for my Carpal Tunnel Syndrome injury. Most stiffness problems seem to be cured by simple sustainable stretching exercises which are the backbone of this book.

Great book and the material is organized in an easy to read layout with a chapter devoted to each of the common problem areas like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome / Elbow / Shoulder / Plantar Fasciitis / Knee Injuries, etc.

1-0 out of 5 stars release your pain
This book is absolutely misleading and a waste of anyone's time and money. Nowhere will you find ANY information about Active Release Techniques, only vague references to how wonderful and effective it is. I'm appalled that anyone even took the timeto write such worthless material. Avoid this book and save yourself a few bucks!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Slightly baffled
I have to admit that I am somewhat baffled by those reviewing the book who are irritated by the fact that they were not "taught" by the book how to perform ART.
Would you purchase a book on orthopedic assessments and assume that by merely reading the book you would be knowledgeable enough at that point to [...] your injury state? People go to
school for years to learn the anatomy and physiology of the body to be able to fully UNDERSTAND and visualize the underlying tissues. This book is an explanation as to the process and
reasons for ART, not to teach you how to do it on yourself. Be wise. Would you set your own fracture after doing a google search on how to do it? See a professional for the work, make yourself knowledgeable by reading about why it helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book

From the supplier: Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is a growing concern not only in the workplace but in the classroom; the dangers of such injuries among children and students who use computers heavily have been largely ignored. Teachers should learn basic safety skills and ergonomic understandings that can be incorporated into computer instruction. RSIs such as carpal tunnel syndrome can be extremely painful and disabling. One basic computer-safety concept is body awareness. Computer users should be taught to notice and feel their bodies as they engage in typing and other tasks, understand principles of balance and relaxation to maximize movement efficiency, and determine the best way to set up a workstation that will not cause strain. Student chairs and desks are often at the wrong height, keyboards are hard to reach and bodies are bent in unnatural postures. The right ways to work are not always obvious; instruction in how to use the body is a real necessity.
