Product Description

Within these pages is the promise of a long-awaited good night's rest.

For decades, millions of people have experienced the irresistible urge to move their legs without understanding why. These disagreeable leg sensations get worse with inactivity, making sitting still and sleep painful and sometimes impossible. If you hold this book, you or someone you love has most likely lived with this constant discomfort, this agitated inability to rest -- restless legs syndrome. You are not alone.

According to the American Medical Association, 10 to 15 percent of adult Americans have the neurological disorder known as restless legs syndrome. This underdiagnosed and treatable condition can completely overwhelm a person's life, causing stress, sleep deprivation, career difficulties, and relationship strife. Author Robert Yoakum has suffered from

restless legs syndrome all of his adult life. In Restless Legs Syndrome, he has compiled a comprehensive resource on this disease, giving those afflicted with it a voice and creating a community. In addition, many of the foremost medical specialists in the field have

contributed their knowledge and experience to make this the most comprehensive and timely source of information on this disease.

Restless Legs Syndrome provides invaluable information for victims, their friends and loved ones, and health-care providers. Yoakum informs and advises readers on:

  • Sleep management and alternative rest options
  • How to enlist help from others
  • Possible causes of restless legs syndrome
  • Criteria for diagnosis
  • Medical advice and treatment options
  • The relationship of stress, dopamine, and iron
  • Finding or creating a restless legs syndrome support group
Yoakum combines empathy and understanding with practical, clear-cut information, and helpful stories from others who share their tales of relief and hope. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars restless legs
restless legs syndrome is a very common disorder and i'm glad i ordered this book. i have been suffering with it, not knowing what it was. now i am getting some ideas and hints on how to treat and live with it. i am so glad i ordered this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A helpful book on a troubling problem
I was recently diagnosed with Restless Leg Syndrome, but all in all I feel pretty lucky that this is now a widely recognized disease, even if it remains difficult to diagnose. But in my experience all the doctors I've encountered are familiar with the disease, recognize its legitimacy, and know how to treat it.When I told friends and relatives about the diagnosis, many of them were familiar with the disease. And my pharmacists are conversant with both the disease and its treatment. This all contrasts with reports of sufferers from the disease only a few years ago, when many doctors were not aware of the disease and treatment options were less than they are today.

Luckily in my case, we've been able to treat it pretty successfully with Ropinirole, but apparently far too many people have not had the ease of treatment that I have had. Many seem to struggle with the ailments and have to work very hard to find appropriate treatment. For those people a book like this could prove invaluable. While the actual text is relatively short, less than 160 pages, it contains many appendices with a huge amount of information on support groups, sources of information about RLS, and even a listing of doctors across the U.S. who specialize in the treatment of RLS.The text does a good job of explaining what RLS is, the medications available to treat it, and the history of its recognition and treatment. There are also some useful charts listing all the medications, their effects, and their side effects.

My one complaint with the book is the overuse of adjectives. This is a problem that I struggle with in my own writing.I naturally pile on the adjectives and when I write for publication I am merciless in eliminating them.Neither the author nor the editor of this book excised many adjectives, so we are constantly told how "dire" and "terrible" disease. But this isn't literature so the somewhat "purple" tone of the prose doesn't really matter.

If you suffer from RLS or suspect that you might this can be a helpful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars WISH I COULD GIVE THIS ONE MORE THAN FIVE STARS
What a wonderful and informative work! This condition has evaded public notice for some time now and the many who suffer from this awful condition have been sort of floating out there, with little understanding, and in cases, little hope.My wife has suffered from this condition for several years, had no clue as to what it was, was absolutely miserable and, to be honest, had trouble even describing what she was going through.Fortunately, her long time physician was finally able to make a diagnoses and was able to offer some relief and help.

This work, by Robert H. Yoakum goes far in the explanation as to what she, and I, as her spouse, is dealing with.It cast much understanding on a little known subject. This book enlightens and encourages. It covers the long time misdiagnosis of this disease, the medical help available, suggestions on coping, hope, and clears up much false impressions which people have.It was interesting to not that people like Bill Mahr, the little twerp comedian seen on cable channels, even makes jokes about this "disease the drug companies made up to sell more drugs with."

I suppose there are other books out there on the subject but I doubt if any of them are more readable that this one. There are also many web sites addressing the subject, but you really cannot replace a good book for read information. This work offers the author's suggestions on sleep management and alternative rest options, how to enlist help from others, possible causes of this syndrome, criteria for diagnosis, medical advice and treatment options, the relationship of stress, dopamine and iron and finding and creating a restless legs syndrome support group.

I would strongly suggest that not only the sufferer of this condition read the book, but the spouse, family, etc. also give it a read...it goes quite far in building understanding, something that is sorely needed.

As I said, the book is quite readable, is an absolute wealth of information as to how to find other resources and is actually quite comforting as a read within its own right.I do highly recommend this one. There is more and more information being published ever day out there and this work is a great start for those newly diagnoses and for those family members of the newly diagnosed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Information about "Restless Legs Syndrome:...."
I have read several books about this medical condition.I got the name of this particular book from a medical periodical to which we subscribe.
I originally borrowed a copy from the library.I was so impressed with the information in the book, that I bought a copy for myself, and a copy for a relative who suffers from RLS.
It is an outstanding book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good general knowledge
I bought this with the hope of new information but was a bit disappointed. Although this book has plenty of useful information, for those of us who have been involved with RLS for many years, this did not provide any new insight to the cause or treatment. For someone newly diagnosed or for uninformed physicians, this book is great. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars There IS a cure and it's SO EASY.
Hi there, hopefully I can help anyone who suffers from RLS.
I had, I repeat HAD RLS for many years.
Many years of pain and suffering and then I wanted to lose some weight so I went on the Atkins diet.
The Atkins diet warns that you will end up being deficient in potassium.
So I went to the grocery store and picked up a bottle for under four dollars.
That same night my RLS was gone.
I thought it was just a fluke but night after night my RLS simply vanished.
So just out of curiosity I googled RLS and potassium.
It turns out THERE IS a link between being potassium deficient and RLS.
I stopped taking potassium for one day and sure enough my spazzy legs kept me up till 2am the following night.
I took my little potassium tablet again, same night, symptoms GONE.
I know some people are going to be ticked that I'm not reviewing this book but honestly?
You may not even need the book.
Try potassium and see if it works for you.
Our American diets of fast food and processed food are sorely missing potassium and other vital nutrients.
And no, I don't work for any vitamin companies either lol.
I REALLY, REALLY think this simple solution can help MANY of you.
It did me.
Like I said, it's less than four dollars for a jar at the grocery store.
You have nothing to lose but your RLS symptoms.
Take care and best wishes. I know what you're going through.
Oh yeah......the Atkins diet lasted five days lol but I'm still using potassium and am still RLS free.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for patients....or doctors
Clearly written, with chapters on what RLS really is, RLS and children, and coping with RLS - this book is an excellent resource in many ways. If you are not sure how to approach your doctor, there is advice. If you want to know more about your options regarding medication, it's covered. Reading it, for the first time, you may feel that someone finally understands what it's like to be you.

Written for the person with RLS, it also can help family and friends understand what their loved one is going through. RLS sounds like such an odd thing; some people even question if it's real.If someone in your life has RLS and you haven't taken it seriously or want to know more, please surprise the RLSer in your life and buy this.It will help you understand how difficult this chronic disorder can be for those who have a moderate or severe form of it.

It can also help the physician help better understand the RLS patient. For physicians, if you can only read one book, buy the Hening, Buchfurer and Lee book, Clinical Management of Restless Legs Syndrome, instead as it provides more detailed information regarding medication options, augmentation, and handling difficult cases.

The work of Virginia Wilson in this book is to be praised.People with RLS will get so much out of this book, it is easy reading for everyone.Because of her hard work and dedication I have learned so much about RLS, having it myself after 11 back surgeries I can now tell my doctors to read the symptoms of other people that I have been complaining about for years.Because of this book I am taken seriously, I take her book to my doctors and have them read some of the pages. One of my doctors (Whom I admired dearly) put me on myopex, now I can sleep a few hours at night, compared to no sleep at night before.I don't dread bedtime anymore.Virginia, I can't thank you enough for what you have done for me and hopefully for so many sufferers.I read your book all day and thank God not all night.God Bless. 5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You Virginia for writing this book!!!
This is a must read for RLS sufferers and their family. I have been suffering from RLS and its "cousins" for at least 23 years. For the most part, doctors have never taken me seriously. This book says it all. It describes the syndromes, the reactions of freinds, family, and the medical community (we are imagining it all), and offers some help and comfort. The latter in knowing what we knew all along: we have a real ailment that is making our lives miserable! Pressure your doctors to look into this disease. Change doctors if you must until you find someone who listens. It was infuriating for me to learn that Dr. Daniel Picchietti, a noted expert in the field referenced in this book, has been working at Carle Clinic, where I have been a patient for 17 years, and no one ever told me about him or refered me to him. I have an appointment now. Thank you so much, Virginia! [Footnote: I did see Dr. Picchietti and found relief.Daily doses of Mirapex have been a great help. For once I am being taken seriously and treated that way.Get help, fellow RLS sufferers.]

5-0 out of 5 stars RLS is a real and very debilitating disorder.
Virginia Wilsonpins it down it down to a t when she gives an excellent and concise overview of RLS and how it affects it's victims. She and the doctors who wrote with her also give hope to the millions of thoseafflicted with what I call the scourge of my life, RLS. The book is a goodsource ofinfo and places to get help. As a health care professional Ifelt the book was a good source for medical professionals and laymen.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book shocked me because it describes my life!
This book lit a fuse for me.I have suffered fromRestless Legs Syndrome for 30 years, and until I ran across this book, I had basicly given up on any help.I received the book three weeks ago, saw a neurologist at the Swedish Hospital's Sleep Disorder Clinic in Seattle two weeks ago, and am set up for a sleep test in two weeks!I am so thoroughly excited about all this & have this book to thank.I was only 8 years old when this syndrome started taking over my nights and I have been labelled "dysfunctional" ever since.I can't and rarely try anymore to sleep at night (daytime sleep comes a little easier for me).I have hurt myself and my husband with my flying legs, it has made me doubt my own sanity, and just the possibility that they may be able to help just makes me emotional!I wish to thank the author, Virginia Wilson, for writing her story and sharing it.If she hadn't, I don't know how long it would have taken me to realize they are learning about it.I have since ordered the book for my three brothers, who are already checking into seeing a neurologist also.It runs strong in my family - in fact, two of my four children seem to have it too.Very valuable info - I loaned it to my family doctor, who obtained some valuable info and a little insight on the subject. 1-0 out of 5 stars Out of date, with potentially harmful information
This book is not only out of date, but offers no information that can not be found with a simple internet search.

Having suffered from RLS for years, and having read almost every book I can find on the topic, I'll have to say this is the worst by far.

In my opinion, the book should be pulled from the marketplace as the information on medications for RLS is several years behind and the suggestions made could be harmful to the patient.

These pages of poorly written misinformation were published prior to the discovery that Requip, a common Parkinson'smedicine, is highly effective in the ongoing treatment of RLS.I suspect Mr. Cunningham knows this, but is not willing to update his otherwise benign and uninformative ramblings.

One of the drugs mentioned in the book, Klonopin, is an addictive controlled substance that has not been the drug of choice for RLS for at least half a decade. In reviews, a common statement is "everyone who utilizes Klonopin on a long term basis becomes low dose addicted."Any true RLS sufferer knows their condition is long term, and is looking for long term relief that will not leave them narcotic dependent.

This book is a prime example of the author, Mr. Cunningham, preying on the ignorant and those too lazy to do their own research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stopping Restless Legs Syndrome

The book gives good details:
1.defines the condition
2.reviews potential causes and who is at risk
3.diagnosing RLS - doctors can miss it - read this section carefully
4.treatments- traditional medicine and alternative treatments: diet, supplements, massage, exercises,
5.gives good overview of drugs
6. talks about dealing with it psychologically
7. support groups information
I think this is a real help and is a good starting point.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stopping Restless Llegs Syndrome
The author explains the condition well andprovides information with ease. This is an alternative health book and gives sound advice on what to do.It states that RLS can be mis-diagnosed by doctors. It can!
The self-massage suggestions work.Additionally, the suggestions for supplements have merit.
I like the workbook style as it is easy to read.I can write notes in it as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars stopping restless legs syndrome
Gives practical and all-natural ways to stop restless legs.
Simple, easy to follow and the suggestions tried actually work!

1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?
When I ordered this book, I was expecting, as in most medically-oriented books, a reasonably well documented work, laying out the most recent research covering the topic, with footnotes leading me to both the sources the author used in writing the book, as well as material for additional research. This book has none of that. There wasn't a hint of the author's background. There wasn't a single footnote. Had I not suffered from RLS for over twenty years, I wouldn't have been able to even guess as to the validity of the material. Fortunately, I have personal experience of most of the conclusions arrived at in the book, and found them to be reasonably accurate, allowing me to infer that the remaining conclusions are also valid.
My recommendation: Don't buy this book. Instead, check out the other books on this topic carried by Amazon, which are better documented, and thus more reliable sources. ... Read more

Product Description
Restless legs syndrome (RLS), also known as Ekbom syndrome, is a common movement disorder with sensorimotor symptoms occurring during sleep and quiet wakefulness. Yoakum described RLS as the "most common disorder you've never heard of" and this may, unfortunately, be an appropriate description of RLS. The term "restless leg syndrome" was first introduced by Karl-Axel Ekbom, a Swedish neurologist and surgeon in 1945. RLS can present itself in primary are and secondary care, across a range of specialties, such as psychiatry, rheumatology, and sleep medicine, and in the UK, the condition remains under-recognized and often regarded as a neurosis in spite of evidence that RLS adversely affects quality of life. Inappropriate clinical history taking leads to misdiagnosis and under diagnosis and a sense that the condition may be a "manufactured" one.

Although RLS is effectively treatable and two drugs are now specifically licensed for RLS in the UK, the condition is generally poorly treated and investigated and often prescribed inappropriate drugs. Patients' descriptions of RLS are and varied including "Elvis legs" and an "electric current" running through their legs. Because of such a broad, unusual spectrum of reported sensations, RLS is frequently misunderstood and misdiagnosed, and even classified as a psychogenic disorder. Patient group surveys in the UK also suggest a consistent delay in diagnosis, delay in referrals, and patients often being told to "put up with the symptoms."

Part of the Oxford Neurology Library, this pocketbook highlights the importance of RLS, the ease with which RLS can be diagnosed, the problems of misdiagnosis, current thoughts on pathogenesis and up-to-date treatments. The book serves as an invaluable quick reference for neurologists, trainees, specialist nurses, and general practitioners. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars An over-priced essay.
I have lived with Restless Leg Syndrome for many years.Since I am not keen on using drugs unless there is absolutely no other way, I'm always interested to consider treatments that don't include drugs.Dr. Karkar's approach to dealing with RLS is interesting.I have not tried his method yet, but I will give it a try.Whether or not this method is effective has no bearing on why I rated this book so low. When you pay $9.99 for a digital book, you expect that you are going to receive a "book."I call Dr. Karkar's work an essay because it is only a few pages long. There is no cover, no table of contents, in fact, there is very little in the way of content at all.I think a fair price would have been $1.99.It's that short.

Beyond Dr. Karkar's method for relieving RLS, he suggests that eliminating caffeine from your diet and going to bed at a regular time each night so that you are not overly tired are ways to relieve RLS.This may be true for some people, but not for me.I have experienced RLS for longer than I can remember.I have done my own trials to try to isolate what brings on RLS.I found that eliminating caffeine or alcohol had no effect.Exercising more or less before bed doesn't change whether I experience it or not. After having RLS every night for the past couple of weeks, I was particularly tired last night and had no RLS.I may go for several weeks and not experience RLS.Then it will start and it could be a month straight or a few days before it subsides again. The only sure relief I get is after its onset, I get up and move my legs and arms, like marching in place or doing pushups and deep knee bends. If I exercise to the point where I start breathing a little heavier, I can return to bed and RLS doesn't return for the rest of the night.

If you're only interested in learning another method for possibly relieving RLS, you may not mind paying $9.99 for this essay.Until the price comes down to something more in line with its length, I recommend passing on this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the best for those who have struggled into old age with RLS
At almost 70, I am an unhappy survivor of RLS. Ihave tried just about every thing, including medicatiom, and The Movement Disorder Clinic at a Local Hosp. Thanks to this book and 2 wonderful, listening Doctors, I have been in a good place for 3 weeks. This book helped all of us figure out where I was, where I am , and (sadly) where I am headed, as there is NO CURE. I do have hope that there are still things to try. I wish there were forms to be copied, that I could take with me for routine, and not , surgeries, for the Doctors, nurses, and other staff. At 83, my Dad had a heart cath., which could have killed him, because of the legs. He did not have access to the knowledge we now have. There may be a cure, but , I may not be around. But there is hope, and sometimes sleep. GREAT BOOK ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Restless Legs Syndrome," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Restless Legs Syndrome in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Restless Legs Syndrome when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Restless Legs Syndrome, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
The condition is surprisingly common and often associated with periodic limb movement disorder. Symptom severity can range from annoying to virtually disabling. Recent advances in definition, evaluation, and treatment have made it possible to provide significant relief to many misdiagnosed, overlooked, or undertreated patients.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurologic disorder characterized by four clinical features: 1) dysesthesias, or uncomfortable sensations in the extremities that are 2) increased with inactivity and relieved with movement, 3) worsened at night, and 4) associated with motor hyperactivity. RLS is identified and diagnosed clinically, much as depression and pain are. Unfortunately, there is no specific biologic marker. Diagnostic criteria from the International Classification of Sleep Disorders are given in Table 1. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for you and your doctor
If you have RLS and are having difficulty getting the help you need from your doctor, this is for you - you can read it together. If you are a doctor and want to know more about RLS and how to treat it, buy this immediately. If you are someone who is not sure your RLS doc is doing the best by you, definitely buy this.

This is written for a medical audience, no question. But, a layperson should be able to read it without many difficulties. It clearly explains what RLS is, when it should be treated, and provides excellent treatment guidelines. It has treatment algorithms, dosage charts for drugs in all four categories, and includes information on working with patients.

It also covers the issue of augmentation in detail; augmentation is the supposedly uncommon side effect of dopaminergic drugs, such as Requip, Sinemet and Mirapex, that turns out to be extremely common. Many doctors didn't have any idea of what it was or how to treat it when they prescribed the newly approved dopaminergicsfor RLS.When their patients suddenly had worsened RLS, more severe RLS, or the RLS moved to other body parts, neither the patient of physician had any idea of what to do.With this book, now everyone knows.

This book also clearly makes the case for using opioids in RLS when other treatments fail.It provides clear guidance for when and how to use opioid therapy. It also discusses mimic diseases and the common primary diseases that can cause RLS.

Highly recommended for every primary care physician, sleep doctor, neurologist, psychiatrist and rheumatologist out there. While the PCPs may not want to learn the complexities of handling moderate to severe RLS, they should know how to identify it and what symptoms may suggest problems.Too many specialists are operating on old outdated or limited info. This will ensure that each of you provides the best treatment you can to your patients....who deserve it.

My only complaint would be that I don't remember any reference to celiac disease and RLS.RLS is related to iron. Many celiacs are not absorbing iron.An extremely common misdiagnosis in celiac disease is anemia. So, RLS can be an indicator of celiac. As can neuropathy. If anyone complains of RLS and is anemic, or has unexplained neuropathy warrants a celiac panel. Given that 97% of celiacs in the US are undiagnosed and that estimates are the 30-40% of celiacs complain of RLS before diagnosis, yet RLS only exists in 10% of the normal population, RLS, anemia and neuropathy may be a good indicator of celiac at least a percentage of the time. ...
