Product Description
This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of official Federal government documents on eye cancer, intraocular melanoma and retinoblastoma: signs and symptoms, diagnosis, lab tests, treatment and management options, and ongoing clinical research. Every aspect of the disease is thoroughly covered. Eye cancer forms in tissues of and around the eye. Some of the cancers that may affect the eye include melanoma (a rare cancer that begins in cells that make the pigment melanin in the eye), carcinoma (cancer that begins in tissues that cover structures in the eye), lymphoma (cancer that begins in immune system cells), and retinoblastoma (cancer that begins in the retina and usually occurs in children younger than 5 years). For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor references and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. Documents from the National Cancer Institute, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Medline, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) are included. In addition to disease-specific information, there is extensive coverage of the broad subject of cancer and its prevention and treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, advanced treatments, managing side effects). Description:
The expression of protein biomarkers in Baltic Sea blue mussels was analyzed after three days exposure to low (2.8 @mg/animal/day), intermediate (28 @mg/animal/day), or high (280 @mg/animal/day) nominal doses of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). Significant expression changes were found in the animals exposed to the low dose, the lowest reported dose for DNA adduct formation in the gills of Baltic Sea blue mussels. Up-regulated expression of the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), quantified from Western blots, and no change in the 5-bromo-deoxyuridine (BrdU) staining pattern, determined by immunocytochemistry, indicated that the observed PCNA response was mainly non-proliferative, and thus possibly due to DNA damage. The expression of the multixenobiotic resistance polyglycoprotein (P-gp) was also up-regulated, proving its usefulness as an exposure marker to planar organic compounds. No effect of the BaP treatment with respect to the retinoblastoma 110 protein or heat shock proteins 60 and 70 was found. The variance in the medium and high dose data was too large to allow for the detection of significant expression changes. We suggest PCNA to be a marker for genotoxic stress derived from the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon BaP, irrespective of whether the stress leads to DNA repair or to cell proliferation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
I now own this "text" and the previously published "atlas" on intraocular tumors by the Shields, as well as oncology books by several other authors. If you own the "atlas", I am not sure it is worthwhile to purchase this new text. Here is why.

This book is filled with great pictures of anterior segment and posterior segment tumors as well as masquerading entities. However, many of the pictures are carried over from the "Atlas of intraocular tumors." The pictures are very good though.

The format in this book is similar to the "atlas" as well where at the beginning of a section, there is a brief and somewhat cursory discussion of the topic. They do not go into the nitty-gritty details of tumor management, study results, etc. What was most frustrating was situations where the Shields would mention that there are distinguishing features between this tumor and this problem, but would not go into further detail to say what those distinguishing features are..clinically, or on FA, or on ultrasound. Also, they show photos of tumors of the same variety that were treated with different modalities and don't specify why (plaque radiotherapy vs surgical excision vs enucleating, etc..). There are many other examples where the text is lacking.

So, I think this is mainly just a new edition of their "Atlas" rather than a true textbook on intraocular tumors. The photos are great, the text is no better than what you would find in a general ophthalmology text.

Currently, the best oncology TEXT is the somewhat old now book by Devron Char, "Tumors of the Eye and Ocular Adenxa." I find the text to contain an adequare amount of detail on the diseases and their management. The "Ocular Oncology" text by Albert is pretty good, but does not have the beautiful photos other books do and sometimes gets bogged down in basic science work. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures
This is an excellent atlas for intraocular tumors. The photos are very nice and the captions succinct. My only complaint is that the text could be more complete in terms of clinical descriptions and distinguishing characteristics of certain lesions both clinically and on diagnostic testing.

Also, there is not much detail in terms of study results or tumor management...ie why one tumor was treated with sclerouveaectomy and another with TTT and another plaque radiotherapy. One can sometimes surmise this, but it would be nice if they explained their clinical decision making for the examples they show.

Tips and pearls regarding their surgical techniques would have been a nice addition also...but I guess you have to be a fellow there to get that. ... Read more
