Product Description

Emerging infectious diseases continue to increase both in incidence and geographic distribution worldwide. Many of these diseases are vector-borne, including malaria (re-emerging), West Nile virus, Lyme disease, American boutonneuse fever (a new rickettsial disease), and others. For example, Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne disease, recently caused over 150,000 cases on one small island in the Indian Ocean. Many scientists fear that Chikungunya will soon spread to the New World in a manner similar to WNV. This book will be a succinct reference for the very important interface between infectious diseases and medical entomology.

Jerome Goddard summarizes the latest thinking about the biological, entomological, and clinical aspects of the major vector-borne diseases around the world. The book covers mosquito-, tick-, and flea-borne diseases, and a variety of other miscellaneous vector-borne diseases, including Chagas' disease, African sleeping sickness, onchocerciasis, scrub typhus, and louse-borne infections. The author provides for each disease a description of the vector involved, notes on its biology and ecology, distribution maps, and general clinical guidelines for treatment and control.

This new edition is updated with the latest research findings and current theories about infectious disease and arthropods. Numerous new, high quality line drawings and photographs of offending arthropods and the lesions they cause are also included. At a time when vector-borne diseases have increased their spread, Infectious Diseases and Arthropods provides physicians, infectious disease specialists, medical entomologists, and public health officials with an up-to-date, readily accessible, gold-standard reference source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Infectious Diseases and Arthropods Review
This is a really great product. I'm taking a Medical Entomology class at my University and needed to purchase this book for the course. Since it was really expensive at my university bookstore, I searched here on Amazon.com for a much better price. I saved over $100.00, and my book arrived in excellent condition. I am well pleased and will definitely recommend the supplier to friends. ... Read more

Product Description
There are UNSEEN HAZARDS in forests and fields that threaten those who enjoy hunting, camping, and hiking.Microorganisms commonly found in wildlife can inflict unspeakable suffering and even death.Rabies, Tetanus (Lockjaw), Tularemia (Rabbit Fever), Brusellosis (Undulant Fever), Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Borrelia (Lyme Disease), are six of the most virulent pathogens lurking in nature’smicroscopic world patiently waiting for an opportunity to infect the unsuspecting and unprepared. But knowledge and simple protective measures can shield even the most vulnerable.

Jerry Genesio has written an 86-page book containing vital information about these perilous pathogens. Each is described with symptoms, treatment, history, carriers, geographical risk areas, and significant incidence reports. The book also contains advice provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA, on how to avoid vectors such as ticks, and how to properly remove ticks.

In 1993, Rabies was confirmed in 20 deer in the state of New York.Tetanus is commonly found in the intestines of wild animals.About 200 cases of Rabbit Fever are reported in the U.S. annually. There are 100 to 200 human cases of Undulant Fever reported nationally each year with most reports originating in Texas, California, and Illinois. In 2003 and 2004, more than 1,800 cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever were reported each year, but less than 2% of all cases are actually found in the Rocky Mountain states.Of 27,444 cases of Lyme Disease reported in 2007, 87% were confined to 10 states, including Connecticut and Wisconsin.

Jerry Genesio was employed by Cutter Laboratories in their Biological Products Division for nearly 20 years. He has written and published numerous articles, including a natural history series focusing on zoonotic diseases that was featured in New England Outdoors magazine. He lives in Bridgton, Maine, and Wilmington, North Carolina. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Better Safe than Sorry, a Necessary Read for all Outdoor Enthusiasts
As an avid camper and hiker, this was a book I knew I should read...but didn't really want to. Do I really want to know about all the hazards lurking in the wildlife I so enjoy watching? Not really. That said, it is far better to know what can harm you and how to avoid it then it is to play ostrich. Don't let the subject matter scare you off this one. It has great value for all outdoor enthusiasts.
