Product Description

A Completely Natural, Safe, Tried and Tested Diet and Exercise Program to Treat and Prevent Scoliosis!

  • Uncover the most recent research on the true causes of scoliosis
  • Discover how bracing and surgery treat merely the symptom not the root cause of scoliosis
  • Find out what latest treatment work, what doesn't and why
  • Discover how lack of proper nutrition creates illness in our bodies and affects the normal growth of the spine
  • Customize an exercise routine unique to your scoliosis to suit even the busiest schedule
  • Learn from others with scoliosis in inspirational stories and case studies

With painstaking research and years of practice, Dr. Lau separates fact from fiction. In this book, he busts popular myths, one by one, and explores what approach works, what alternatives a scoliosis patient has and how it is possible to create a comprehensive plan to achieve peak physical and spinal health.

Inspired by the extraordinary resilience of the Aboriginal groups of Australia and native African tribes that rarely suffer from scoliosis, Dr. Lau prescribes an easy-to-follow, clinically proven program that harks back to what our bodies were originally designed for and need to survive on. This book will set you on the path to total recovery by simply following the three-step process.

Testimonials

"I strongly recommend Dr. Lau's natural program as an effective and better alternative to conventional bracing and surgery. I am very impressed with the results! I think that every spinal specialist will find the information contained in this book useful." - Dr. Alan Kwan, D.O. Medical Director

"The results were beyond my expectation with my scoliosis corrected. Even better, I avoided surgery! - Lucy Koh

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking and a different perspective on scoliosis
After reading most books out there on scoliosis I found Dr Lau's book refreshing. He looks at conventional bracing and surgical solutions in a more critical eye and gives readers an action plan rather than the usual wait and see approach. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to get informed about their option for this condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book, but the body alignment exercises made me feel worse!
I was diagnosed with scoliosis in junior high.I did not wear a brace or seek chiropractic treatment. My scoliosis has become worse over time.I do a good job of hiding it, but the disfigurement is noticeable and my back does hurt a lot.

I've always been a big exerciser.I'm now in my early 40's and I switch up the following activities 6-7 days a week for an average of 1 1/2 - 3 total hours a day:walking, boot camp DVDs, cardio, recumbent biking, light weight training, yoga, Pilates, basic exercises and stretches.

I tried a lot of the body balancing exercises in this book, and most of the ab exercises.I could do all of the ab exercises without pain even though I can't pass all the plank tests and I wasn't sore the following day.

But, the next day I tried the body balancing exercises along with the plank tests and the first half of Dr. Lau's body alignment exercises with the ball. The pelvic exercises are something I've never done before. They did feel a little awkward and my muscles felt tight performing them.It didn't feel great but I kept going to 20 reps.

The next day I was in a lot of pain.My head, neck, spine, core, hips and pelvis were all sore and hurt quite a bit.As I mentioned above, I am very active so I was really surprised at how these body alignment exercises completely unaligned my body.I feel better today, but am still more out of alignment than I usually am and it's all from the body alignment exercises.

I found the nutrition section about metabolic typing interesting, but I'm not sure if it is relevant to healing back pain.

With that said, I cannot recommend this book for anything other than an interesting read about the possible factors that cause scoliosis.

Everything else seems unproven, and in my case the exercises were not helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why it worked for me
I first came about this article in Live Well Magazine. Picked it up in the lounge in some shop I was in. Found the book by chance. I think the books creates a dialog with the reader in a way that allows the reader to figure out what is best for them. I have been using this a workbook. I did the highlighting thing the author prescribes in the beginning. Now I have filled in almost every possible space available. I was able to add other information I find online regularly and use that in conjunction with this. I hope this can help you too.

4-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book
This book was recommended to me by my chiropractor. I have had scoliosis since birth and for me I found the contents simply liberating. This is a book that takes a universal approach and looks at matters that most people wouldn't immediately link together. The chapters on diet and nutrition I found to be the most innovative as I have never come across a book that talks about what food people with spinal conditions should eat. The exercises were great too. Would highly recommend it to anyone who either suffers or wants to broaden his or her knowledge on the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars I have just finished reading Health In Your Hands
by Dr Kevin Lau and have had to run onto my computer to add my review. What a joyous experience it really was. Everyone must read this book. From start to finish I felt like my knowledge on scoliosis was being perpetually pumped to the point it would burst. Intense, detailed, thought provoking and revolutionary, what more would you possibly want from a book! Go and buy it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT aptly named; know what you're getting
I thought this would be more of an all-inclusive approach to "everything you need to know about Scoliosis." However, it is completely focused on surgery - what to do when you're told you need surgery, how to prepare for the hospital, how to recover after, etc. etc. There is nothing on exercise or physical therapy or other modern non-surgical approaches (which much of the other research suggests). There is one small section on bracing. There are so many other books out there on Scoliosis that take a more holistic approach.

This is a good book if you know you are getting surgery for your scoliosis, but that's about it. I was very disappointed.

A much better resource is this brief pamphlet/book put out by the Scoliosis Care Foundation called The Scoliosis Desk Reference. It is very succinct, w/o any bias for treatment but clear and thorough on the facts, screening, types of scoliosis, treatment options, descriptions from scientific literature, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scoliosis explained
I was diagnoised with scoliosis in 1972, have had two surgeries, and many pain issuses as I get older. This book helped me to understand in plain english what scoliosis is, what I can expect as I age, and that alot of what I am experiencing is normal for me. This is a great book for anyone who wants to know more about scoliosis written in a way that is easy to understand for the lay person.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book to have for scoliosis patients
While it doesn't have as many case studies/pictures/stories as Scoliosis: Ascending the curve, I find the information to be a lot more in depth.
It was recommended to me by a fellow scoliosis surgery veteran before I had my op (Posterior only, T2 to L1 Fusion nearly 2 years ago at the age of 20), and the information it gave me helped me to really be informed and therefore less scared of what I was facing.
I personally don't really care for Stopping Scoliosis (just bringing it up as the two are offered as a package). It's too fluffy and not real in-depth.Though I guess that book may be better suited to kids/teens or those who are likely to get scared by TOO much information.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Scoliosis Sourcebook by Michael Neuwirth, M.D.
I have scoliosis and just recently had A/P spinal fusion at the age of 50.I searched everywhere and bought severals books before I chose a doctor and had the surgery.I found this book to be the best and most helpful. It is critical for patients to understand and expect what this surgery means.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Reference for Anyone Researching Scoliosis
Michael Neuwirth has done an excellent job of covering just about everything patients and their caretakers need to know about scoliosis and its treatment.Although there were a few times where I noted Dr. Neuwirth's treatment is different than the treatment received in this part of the country, in general, his wisdom and advise is right on.I'm grateful for such a thorough text to which I can refer. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars not helpful
I have been teaching yoga for scoliosis since 2005 and I'm always looking for more information to help my students.I found this book to be less that helpful if you have any kind of specific scoliosis experience. The drawings were terrible, the information redundant and not specific enough. As a general information book I'm sure it would be useful but for those wanting more specific info look else were.

5-0 out of 5 stars Snap, Crackle, and Pop!
I add my comments to ones already posted as yet another health practitioner with scoliosis. I would definitely recommend this book to my patients and have found it useful in my daily life and back care regimen as well. And the Rice Krispies sound effects I get from the exercises reassure me they're working to keep my joints on the move.

A back exam is an important part of a routine physical exam, and I am amazed at the frequency with which I find abnormal curves in the aging backs of my patients.More startling yet is that the majority of these women--and those with scoliosis aremostly women--had no idea that their backs were rotating and sliding sideways with the years. As just another twisted sister, I also had no idea my spine had deviated so until I entered my 50's, and a yoga partner gasped as she laid hands on my lumbar region, exclaiming "What on earth is wrong with your back?"

Despite regular aerobics, my back became increasingly painful and prone to spasm.Body maintenance is now a priority, and this task, I've discovered, requires a careful blend of body awareness and body work.My personal and professional opinion is that many people do not have a very keen awareness of their bodies in space with respect to various asymmetries that affect movement and comfort. As a result, I don't think this book would be very helpful to persons with scoliosis who have not worked with a professional skilled in body work.

Since my discovery of my own unfortunate curves and bends which I believe started with very mild abnormalities in adolescence that increased markedly with age, I have tried rolfing, neurokinetics, yoga, Pilates, and a personal trainer.Every modality took me to a better place, but no one of them would've been sufficient to master my troubles. Now I work weekly with a Pilates instructor and a personal trainer, completely satisfied (even while wishing it gone) that my scoliosis is managed in the best way possible.

That said, "Curves, Twists, and Bends" is full of easy-to-learn and easy-to-practice exercises that I have incorporated into daily life.I can tell from subtle shifts and 'releases' (those satisfying little pops and cracks) that the routines in this book are both helping my spinal joints stay supple and also keeping me from settling back into bad postural habits. While some of the illustrations could be better, the step-by-step instructions and bullet points are completely clear, and I actually enjoyed the smiling stick figures along with the text.

Take this book with a dose of ongoing body work, and the combination will further your battle with gravity!

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Guide
I have a mild case of scoliosis, but have never really had the basics explained to me. This book is quite helpful in this regard, and also provides practical exercise suggestions that strengthen the back to combat the effects of scoliosis without raising expectations that scoliosis can be erased. The method counsels acceptance but also hard work to ameliorate the effects of the disability. It lets you know what to expect and what not to expect from the exercise regimes recommended. A down-to-earth and compassionate guide by an author who knows from personal experience what she is writing about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful For People Dealing With Scoliosis.
As someone who has Scoliosis(aka curvature of the spine),I found this book easy to read(not too much medical jargon) as well as full of useful information, exercises & practical advice for people with this condition. I tried some of the exercises and found they helped my back although I don't do them on a regular basis, which is,of course, recommended to get the maximum benefits from them. However,I am trying to do just that. In conclusion,I'm really glad I got this book and would definitely recommend to others with scoliosis.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Idea
As a child I had a moderate degree of scoliosis. At that time you tried exercise, then a back brace, then surgery - depending on the severity of the problem. Since my scoliosis was not bad, my doctor recommended situps (Pilates hadn't hit the U.S. market yet). Before long, my scoliosis was so slight, that most of the time it was missed in screenings.

As an adult who practices martial arts and fitness, I really like Pilates. It focuses on the deeper structural muscles which support the core of the body making it more stable. I believe that Pilates exercises, especially targeted to a specific condition as here, can really help. I am also a fan of self healing before mechanical intervention or surgery.

The exercises in this book are pretty low intensity (Pilates can be quite strenous). This seems appropriate for a physical therapy goal. As a non physical-therapist or doctor I can only say that Pilates has helped me with my back issues, and I'm sure it helps others. If you have scoliosis, go through the exercises in the book with your doctor or physical therapist - most likely you'll get a green light. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stopping Scoliosis: not a reason to have hope
I was thrilled to receive this book, however after readng it cover to cover I was saddened by the one sided view.
There are other ways to heal scoliosis (and other serious conditions) without surgery, one just has to look!
My daughter was dissappointed in the bias stories and how everyone ends up with rods. Dr. Harrington would
shudder at the fact that his invention is the only cure with today's technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teens!
As a teen with scoliosis, I found this book extremly helpful from the start. It told me everything I needed to know, even through the major sugery, which I had to have. I would reccomend this book to anyone with scoliosis, especially teens.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
I have scoliosis and have gone through bracing and surgery. This book gave me a better understanding about the disorder and it's treatment options. The first-hand accounts provide a personal face, reminding therest of us we're not alone! Some of the material about surgery and bracingis outdated, but it's a good book for anyone facing scoliosis treatment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Information is dated
Based on other books and research on the web, I found the information to be rather dated. However, the personal stories of people coping with scoliosis are helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone facing treatment of scoliosis
I read this book in 1994 right before I had surgery for scoliosis.I identified with the author's story so strongly that it brought tears to my eyes.Nancy Schommer, who had scoliosis herself, provides a personal, riveting first- person story along with plenty of factual information and advice. This book is perfect for teenagers with scoliosis who feel depressed, confused, and like there is no one who can identify with them.Schommer wore a brace and had surgery for scoliosis and provides accounts of both. The book also includes a list of reputable hospitals and foundations.Excellent, excellent, excellent! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must read!
Eight years ago I was diagnosed with Scoliosis. It was a complete shock to learn that I had a curve in my spine. I was 20 and had been in the military for a year and a half before I had started having any back problems. I saw an orthopedic surgeon who seemed quite surprised that at 40-degrees, I wasn't in any more pain than what I was experiencing at the time. I was told then that surgery was not recommended as I could control what discomfort I was in. Fast forward to last month. For about a year now I have felt an increase in pain and in muscle spasms. I had my yearly physical done along with my yearly x-rays. There is a significant change in last year's x-rays to this year. And then the words I've been dreading since my diagnosis came out: might not be a bad idea to start looking into having Scoliosis surgery. I've always been a holistic type person and have been extremely hesitant to even entertain the idea of surgery.

I must say, though, that after reading this book, I feel more confident in knowing what to expect from diagnosis to surgery, if that is the path that will need to be taken. The details and helpful hints throughout this book has changed my view of this surgery from "absolutely not!" to "it's a possibility." (Anything has to be better than what I experience daily and I'm so tired of putting more and more poison in my body.) It's encouraging to read about what to expect of the surgery and how it will be performed in layman's terms. The author does a wonderful job of explaining the whole procedure, start to finish. I would say this is a definite must read for anyone out there who has to think about this surgery and even more perfect for family and friends who will bear witness to the procedure and be a part of the recovery process.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Bible
I have spent years lamenting the notion that my son may need corrective surgery for his scoliosis. I have searched the internet and found my opinions varying with each post read. It became apparent last fall that surgery is his only option. Deciding to get it done as soon as he graduates has put the pressure on us to come to terms with our fears. David's book is the first thing I have read that alleviates my anxiety. This surgery is intense. But reading his chronicle has put us all at ease. We now know that our son's risks from the surgery are FAR less than his risks without it. David's timeline of pre-op thru recovery is honest and detailed. Before reading his book, I felt fairly knowledgeable about this procedure. Ater reading his book, I realize there are alot more questions to ask. Never hard to understand, this book is written in unbiased layman's terms and is short enough to be able to re-read (again and again).

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Scoliosis Patients
I had originally borrowed this book from my local library to educate myself about the prospect of having surgery to correct my scoliosis. This book was very informative and easy to read. It contains a tremendous amount of information about scoliosis, the surgical process and even what to expect post surgery. This book was also useful in helping me prepare for my second opinion.
I highly recommend "Scoliosis Surgery."

5-0 out of 5 stars Scoliosis Surgery-The Definitive Patient's reference-.a must read
This book by David K. Wolpert is a must read for anyone contemplating
Scoliosis surgery. It has all the Medical Jargon explained in clear terms easily understood by an average person. It is informative and facinating from page 1 to the end.I am scheduled for surgery and could not put it down.It covers all the things you couldn't think of to ask the surgeon.I can't wait for my husband to read it so that we can discuss it.I think this book would benefit anyone with scoliosis even if they are not thinking of immediate surgery. It would help them to realize there are options should their scoliosis progress. Chapter threecompletely covers alternatives to surgery. I highly recommend this book.

This was such a lovely book to find. It's been many years since I was diagnosed with scoliosis, and I wish I'd had this beautiful memoir to read when I was thirteen. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book was truly a help with the uncertainty of surgery
Great Book I would recomend this book to any young girl who has to have Scoliosis surgery. It is not candy coated she tells it like it is. Nothing can take away the fear of this surgery but I feel it helped my daughter on what to expect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Triumphant Girl!

[Book Review submitted by Sarah Patellos, age 16, Co-Spokesperson for the National Scoliosis Foundation]

In When Life Throws You a Curve: One Girls Triumph Over Scoliosis, Elizabeth Golden lets the reader in on the struggles and hardships she experienced when faced with major surgery for scoliosis.Ultimately, she presents an uplifting story of growth and conquest over a condition that she did not allow to stop her from living her life to the fullest.
As co-spokespersons for the National Scoliosis Foundation, Elizabeth and I share the desire to share our experiences in order to help other patients deal with their own battle with scoliosis and ultimately to become victorious. The adversity of our condition cannot be denied, but we were faced with the choice to let scoliosis run our lives, or to live our own lives fully in spite of scoliosis. We hope to increase awareness about the importance of screening for scoliosis in pre-teens and teens.
As a scoliosis patient of eight years, I have endured eight braces, a seven hour spinal fusion surgery, a six week post surgery summer recovery, and many 120 mile round trips for checkups and x-rays. I, too, have triumphed over what "curve" life has thrown me. Any young person dealing with an illness or medical condition will be able to appreciate Elizabeth's sharing of her experience. And, hopefully, by reading this book, be inspired to find the power and ability to come out on top of adversity. Having scoliosis has actually made me feel fortunate because I have a condition that can be corrected and I am very proud to have overcome such a personal hardship.
I can relate to Elizabeth when she writes about her pursuit of sports and the desire to not miss out on events that are important to her, such as summer camp. I have also chosen to not let scoliosis stop me from doing what I love to do. I have been dancing since I was three, and have been competing since I was twelve. When I was in fourth grade, I was informed that I would need to wear a Boston back brace eighteen hours a day and I was devastated. I wondered if I would be able to dance, go to the beach with my friends, and do the active things that I loved to do. It turned out that I was able to continue with everything I wanted too--the brace simply became a normal part of every day life.It was an accepted fact of life and a non-issue for me with my friends.I was certainly not going to let a brace stop me! I continued to live my life, and soon enough accepted my brace as a part of my daily underwear--nothing like that would define who I was.
Elizabeth's story focuses on her surgical experience, which I can personally relate to all too well. The support received from her friends and family, especially her parents, grandmother and aunt, was extremely important to her successful recovery. I found this was a principal theme to her story, as it was with my own experience. When facing personal suffering and difficulties, the support of family and close friends is vital to your contentment and successful recovery. Having a grandmother and aunt who had dealt with scoliosis before seemed to be very helpful to Elizabeth. The importance of the good care she received from them was consistent throughout the book. Elizabeth also notes other struggles outside of spinal surgery, which is relatable to all teens. Being a teenager with scoliosis does not get you out of being a teenager!
Elizabeth speaks honestly about her emotions before, during and after the hospitalization.By expressing the fear of anticipating the surgery, she effectively helps to normalize the experience for other teens facing a major surgery or hospitalization.Elizabeth's appreciation for her Grandmother's support and love comes through clearly in the telling of her story. To her credit, Elizabeth doesn't minimize the challenges and fears that accompany surgery.Yet, she also tells of her emergence from the fear that her future ability to return to being active and playing squash and tennis could possible be changed forever.Elizabeth's story reminds others that they, too, are not the only person who ever has or is facing the diagnosis of scoliosis. By learning about one person's experience, other scoliosis patients and their families can relate to some aspect of their story. My individual experience differs somewhat from Elizabeth's, but aspects of her memories hit home for me.I too had to face surgery, and much of Elizabeth's account of her journey was similar to the experiences and emotions that I went through. I applaud Elizabeth for her ability to convey her story with humor, sincerity, and honesty. I believe others will find her story insightful and helpful, giving them hope for triumph over their curve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for families facing spinal fusion!
I am the mother of a teen who underwent spinal fusion for scoliosis eight months ago. This book, by a teen, for teens who may be dealing with a diagnosis of scoliosis and facing surgery in an invaluable story for others to hear.Elizabeth speaks openly of her emotions through her journey from diagnosis to recovery. The most helpful preparation for surgery for me was to speak to other parents whose children had recently been through it themselves. While the specifics for each patient will vary, much of what Elizabeth described was similar to my daughter's surgical experience. This story is written honestly, with hope and inspiration for teens who may be facing a similar challenge. It isn't too overwhelming for a teen facing surgery to read.Elizabeth's successes in life following surgery should give hope to others. In fact, they would likely relate to many of the same thoughts and feelings expressed in the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A quick, educational and entertaining read!
I cannot express how happy I was to find a recently published book covering this topic from the perspective of a patient. Scoliosis is an incredibly scary disease to discover you have, as it often rears its head at a very young age and with no warning. Luckily in Elizabeth's case she had family members to talk to that had been through it all before. Knowing not everyone suffering from Scoliosis is privy to this kind of inside information, Elizabeth decided to share her experience in order to relieve some of the confusion and anxiety that comes with being diagnosed with Socliosis.Having recently undergone this surgery myself, I recognized with Elizabeth's struggle and I know many young adults will be encouraged by her words and find hope in her eternal optimism. This book is not only educational and entertaining for people directly effected by this disease, but also their families and friends. I would reccomend it to young people recently diagnosed with Scoliosis, considering surgery, or about to undergo surgery. Elizabeth Golden is truly a survivor in every meaning of the word. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
The book is very thin with much less detail than I expected. Also the ads for it implied there was an enclosed DVD but there was not one with the book. Very disappointed and not worth the money

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Having been recently diagnosed with moderate scoliosis (age 46) and exploring the few options, I ordered this book.Based on the info and testimonies I could find, yoga seems to be a reasonable step - instead of the standard issue back exercises and then wait and see if problem progresses to brace then surgery approach. The book is very well written - especially the opening pages which has a clear summary of scoliosis - the 4 most common types of curvatures - and the explanation of structural (usually unequal growth) and functional scoliosis (caused by environment) - and how to determine the difference (which type you have). I have been able to do some of the exercises for the last few weeks which seem to be helping - back "seems" straighter, stronger, and definitely more flexible (even visually a bit - waistline is a little less uneven..).Continueous pain in lower back and hips has very much decreased (gone much of the time). However, I do not understand the write up on how to do many of the exercises (and I am concerned about doing them incorrectly) so I have just ordered the DVD.I would recommend purchasing this book - it is written by someone with severe scoliosis (who is extremely active and looks great even though) and contains a great deal of beneficial information. Here is a link to the author's site for more info -->[...]

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative
I found the book informative and an easy read, however it lacked excitement and was, at times, boring. As the mother of a patient fighting a different long-term chronic illness and the author of a book about that illness,[ASIN:0595470017 There Must Be A Reason: My Daughter's Battle With Wegener's Granulomatosis] I would have liked to read about the reactions and interactions of the families of the author and those people whose case histories she cites.More detail on the doctor-patient relationships and hospital stays Brooke experienced during her battle would have added to the story.I salute Brooke for sharing her story with the world and having the wherewithall to complete and publish her story. What we learn living with chronic illness either personally or within a family setting can help others and I believe Brooke's experiences touch on doing that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good overview
I recently encountered this book at a used bookstore; it was written in 1999 and I would hope there is newer information on the market. That's why this is a 3-star review. It was probably very good at the time it was published.I haven't read any of the other books on the topic.

Ascending the Curve presents a pretty comprehensive view of scoliosis for the recently-diagnosed and therefore, is written for the adolescent patient.Outcomes from a variety of approaches are presented (aggressive treatment, ignoring the problem, alternative treatments that didn't work). The book explains the variables that affect bracing vs. surgery, which I had not been able to figure out by listening to people with scoliosis discuss their treatment.

Two points:
One, I would have liked to see a clear illustation of how curvature is measured.Lots of talk about degrees of curvature, but I'm still in the dark about "degree from what line?"

Two, in the Pros for surgery, one item:"You may get rid of scoliosis-related pain."A corresponding Con says, "The arthritis time clock starts when your spine is fused," implying, but not clearly stating, that the longer term outcome of spinal fusion is a different form of pain. This is not an argument against surgery, but rather a point that could be made more clearly.A fair number of the stories in the book present longer-term outcomes of a variety of treatments (grownups, in other words).

If you're reading everything in the field, this is worth the time it takes to read it.Just don't let it be the only book you read if you've just left the doctor's office with a new diagnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am in this book
When I was 13 I underwent a spinal fusion for scoliosis. During this time I was a part of a support group for scoliosis run by Brooke Lyons and after my surgery, Brooke chose to feature me in her book. After reading it I felt people suffering from this disease would have a good resource and I felt good knowing I could help with that. In addition I think everyone's story was really inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I was recently diagnosed with scoliosis and began a search for more information.A woman on an online forum pointed me towards this book.I picked it up and read it in one sitting. The language is not overly complex- very understandable. But gave me a much better understanding of my condition, and what can be done about it.The individual patient's stories were also pretty inspirational.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This book has help me understand in great detail how the spine vertbrae's are linked. With the surgeons letter i was able to see what parts of the spine where affected on my son. This helped to inform me, in a manner in which is easy to understand as the book is written in PLAIN English. I would Reccommend this book to parents or people with Scoliosis wishing to be informed without medical terms.Helps take away the fear of the unkown.rating by me 8 out 10. ... Read more

This book MAY be useful for a medical professional. I found it useless for practical application as a source for scoliosis exercises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Three-Dimensional Treatment for Scoliosis:A Physiotherapeutic Method for Deformities of the Spine
This book by Christa Lehnert-Schroth, P.T., contains the most amazing treatment for deformities of the spine I have ever seen. I would highly recommend this book to any physical therapist who works with scoliosis patients. As a registered nurse in the United States, the text books and classroom instructors taught that scoliosis was generally treated with bracing and/or surgery. No where had I EVER seen this Schroth Method mentioned. I got this book when my husband was diagnosed with Scheuermann's Kyphosis at the age of 64. (Four years ago, an incorrect diagnosis was made: osteoporosis with vertebral compression fractures.) Exploration of Scheuermann's Kyphosis on the Internet led him to the Schroth Method and three locations in the United States where physical therapists, who have been trained in the Schroth Method, are available. They treat both scoliosis and Scheuermann's Kyphosis (a.k.a. juvenile or adolescent kyphosis) or kyphoscoliosis with the Schroth Method. Unfortunately these trained physical therapists are not listed in the book but were located with deeper research into the treatment method. The mother of Ms. Lehnert-Schroth, the late Katharina Schroth, was a true genius, researcher, and therapist who deserves high respect and an honorary doctoral degree for the development of the Schroth Method andmeticulous documentation of her work. The book is invaluable for understanding the deformities of the spine and the photographs speak volumes to the success of her treatment. Western medicine in the United States (US) advocates surgery. Since the Schroth Method is not well known in the US, persons with deformities of the spine are not given the Schroth Method as a choice. The spine surgeon who correctly diagnosed my husband had not heard of the Schroth Method. It is hoped this book will become better known in the US so that thousands of persons who have spine deformities will seek out alternatives to a horrendous surgical treatment.

3-0 out of 5 stars great info, complex reading
I was looking for options to treat Scoliosis since I practice Manual Therapy and outcomes and opinions vary quite a bit within this field, but overall, there is a lot of questioning about positive outcomes.
There is a lot of great info presented in this book, a lot of statements that will make you think twice about everything that you've done before for this dysfunction. There are a lot of pictures that clarify some of the more difficult exercises descriptions and a lot of pictures that show their great outcomes.
However, the method is complex. At least, it does appear so by just reading the book and not seeing it done in person.Besides that, I was looking for a little more organizaton when it comes to steps to follow;I'm not talking about protocols though. I'm talking about a clear description of steps to follow when you are treating this pts. To give this book the benefit of the doubt, I'm reading the highlighted areas again.
Maybe I missed it. But be ready to come out of it not only with a lot of info that will open up your mind but also with the need to review info and think quite a bit about it. As I said before, great info though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a child facing surgery
This was a good book for my daughter. She is facing scoliosis surgery, and this was written by a girl who went through the same thing. Sometimes kids just need the opinion of another kid for the peace of mind. This book gave my daughter just that. She is not as fearful now and it answered many of her questions. Highly recommend if your child is facing scoliosis and the possibility of bracing or surgery.

Written and illustrated by Michelle Spray, Growing Up With Scoliosis: A Young Girl's Story addresses the emotional and social aspects arising from this condition and answers all the questions commonly raised by girls, friends, and family members affected by Scoliosis. Recommended by the National Scoliosis Foundation and a welcome addition to any medical clinic, community school or public library reference collection, Growing Up With Scoliosis is thoroughly "reader friendly" and simply invaluable in helping teens and families to cope with a condition that could otherwise have serious emotional ramifications.

5-0 out of 5 stars A deeply personal story of triumph over scoliosis.
This is an inspirational, factual account by the author, on how she lived with and overcame her disability, during the most formative years of her life. One can only imagine the courage it took to relive her experiences, by committing them to paper, so that others would benefit. The images she creates makes the reader a silent partner in her initial discovery, extensive treatment and ultimate victory. Anyone who has scoliosis, or knows such a victim, indeed anyone with a long term illness, will gain insight and hope from the experiences and emotions gleaned from the author's diary. The resulting book and the outcome are both shear joy! ... Read more

Product Description
Even before she was diagnosed with scoliosis at thirteen, Linda Wisniewski felt off kilter. Born to a cruel father and a long-suffering mother in the insulated Polish Catholic community of upstate New York, she learned martyrdom as a way of life. Off Kilter shows her learning to stretch her Self as well as her spine as she comes to terms with her mentally deteriorating, widowed mother and her culture. Only by accepting her physical deformity, her emotionally unavailable mother, and her Polish American heritage does she finally find balance and a life that fits. Susan Wittig Albert calls Off Kilter a "splendid first memoir about the difficult business of finding balance in our lives. Funny, honest, deeply moving, Off Kilter reminds us just how hard it is to adjust to the physical pain, the emotional loss, and even the surprising beauty of being fully who we are." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars OFF KILTER: A compelling, compassionate read.....
I began reading the day it arrived. I continued reading it in every spare moment (and also put off a few other things so I could keep reading) and finished the book within 24 hours. Off Kilter was so compelling that I just had to keep reading it!
Linda did an amazing job of weaving her own healing journey, her cultural background, regional history and her family dynamics into a story that resonated very strongly with me.She believes, as I do, that we carry alot from our families, our home territory and our ancestral line and the only way to make peace with the difficult parts is to revisit the scene and work with what we find.

Thank you, Linda for a wonderful, compassionate meditation on growing, healing and making peace with our pasts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Healing Memoir
I thought about abuse, escape, memoir and healing as I read Linda Wisniewski's beautifully written memoir, which deserves to be compared toFrank McCourt's Angela's Ashes, although she describes emotional rather than physical starvation and emotional chill rather than the literal fear of freezing to death that McCourt endured. The author's curved spine became a visible manifestation of a childhood where she could only silently absorb the verbal abuse of a hostile father and the criticism of her distant, self-effacing mother. Wisniewski felt devalued long before the scoliosis diagnosis at 13 classified her as damaged and unworthy.
Her memoir uses evocative details to transport the reader to the pleasures of playing on sidewalks in the 1950s upstate New York neighborhood where she grew up. Her family's Polish, Catholic culture encouraged embracing, even inviting pain and suffering. I couldn't help but think that her experience must have been more difficult to transcend because the abuse was internalized. That she managed to find her way ot of the maze and build self-esteem and accomplish things her mother could never have dreamed of offers hope to others caught in webs of negative memories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good read
This book was so compelling that I stayed up way too late reading it all at once!(It was worth it.)I came out of it with such respect for Linda's strength and vision.Things in her life have been off-kilter at times, but she's been able to recognize that and stay true to what's right. That is some power.

I'm looking forward to more writing from Linda!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loving and Honest
What I most admire about Linda Wisniewski's memoir is that she understands the process of healing from past wounds is a multi-faceted experience. In her book both emotional and physical pain are present in the process of healing, joy in the midst of pain, and small and large grievances in the midst of heart-felt, long lasting commitments to family members who do not always treat each other well. Wisniewski's portrait of her relationship with her mother is compassionate and honest and portrays the turbulence of family love in all the richness and complexity of an actual--rather than an idealized--life.Her memoir both embraces and critiques the pressures that identities based on gender, class and ethnic heritage bring to bear on the life of a third-generation Polish-American woman reared in the early 1960s in a working-class, upstate New York town.In a very different context, in the words of James Merrill, Wisniewski discovers in her fine book that in the marathon of a life-long commitment to her mother she is "masked, as who is not, in laughter, pain and love."

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks for the memories...
Off Kilter arrived from Amazon about 11am this morning . I just finished it.(3:30 pm)
